this only works if gpu supports PCIE gen 5. If GPU runs in PCIE gen 4 - you will end up running it with 8 lanes which with highest end GPU's will result in lost performance. I am talking 3090-4080 and above cards.
You have no idea how useful those charts were to me. The business of shared lanes and M.2 slots that don't work if a PCIe socket is occupied, or if all of the M.2 slots are used, you lose half of the SATA ports has been doing my head in. thats a negative for the hero, it affects all boards with pcie 5.0 z690 or z790. essentially, it is false marketing, you can never trully utilize a 2nd pcie 5.0 lane. if either slot is occupied its downgraded. OR if a gen 5 ssd is installed in the 1st m.2 slot. TLDR you are paying extra for marketing on the hero, there is zero benefit for a 2nd pcie 5.0 slot on a z690 or z790 board. you missed the entire point.

There are a couple AsRock boards that would look awesome in certain PC builds. That crappy sound they chose detours me elsewhere.
Let me make sure I heard you correctly, I am planning to used nvidia 3080 to, which is a pcie 4 x 16. So if I do not used nvme slot 1, but skip and start with slot 2, I should be ok to ensure the gpu has all of its pcie lanes available ? Or this is only limited to a spec Asus z790 mb model ?
as far as im aware, most if not all z790 motherboards do this with the first nvme slot, so it's recommended not using it and start at the 2nd one.
It doesnt matter because the first pcie slot is pcie 5.0 so even if its working at x8, its just as fast as pci 4.0 x16. So no performance degradation for your gpu. So you can use the first m.2 slot without any problems.
moving from imac after 14 years to a PC. For coding/programming, is the Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite AX a good option in combination with a i5 13600K? Or a Gigabyte Z790 aero G atx. Thanks

Will the NH-D15 fit on the Strix-790E? It didn't fit for the Z690. Some info I really really want to know.
the VRM height seems to be the same but slightly different design. I would recommend reaching out directly to ASUS support to check this as I currently don't have NH-D15 to test with
I used the NH-D14 with the Noctua NM-i77xx-MP83 adapter kit and it worked for my Strix Z690 board.
@@A2KMedia On the z690-e there was some plastic that stood just in the way, people could remove it and it would fit (breaking warranty), it depends on how the shape is this time around.
Yes, it fits on the Strix 790E and 790F. Noctua has a compatibility tool on their website.
hi, nice overview and comparison with other boards :)) one question though, does this still have the ethernet issues of i225-v/i226-v? such as the the disconnect issue, low speeds, dropping packets etc.

Is there a point to get Z790 over Z690 for an ITX format since such small motherboard can't have more than 1 PCIe slot?
I was thinking the same
Ram compatibility.
ITX boards can push most kits harder than normal boards already because they don't have 4x dimms.
The z790s have more recently validated testing for higher MT/s kits than the z690 and for more brands than the z690s
Could be able to run a 7800-8000 kit on a z790 where the same brand z690 would only be able to run 6000-6600
Should I get Strix B760-f or Z690-f if I'm going for a non K CPU? Both boards only have a little difference in price with Z690-f being slightly more expensive in where I live.
Also, If I somehow the K CPU price drops and I decided to get one, is Z690-F still worth it even if I'm not going to OC?

So when M.2_1 is not used, will the main PCIe_gen5 slot stay at 16x? Like if I used any/all other M.2 slots other than M.2_1, does the main PCIe_gen5 slot continue at x16? Or if I use any M.2 slot, it gets dropped to x8?
hey, on that specific board yes them m.2_1 is used then main slot drops to x8. others can be used. but other boards are different so make sure to read in their manuals or tech documents to see what it is like under storage and expansion sections

Yes, i'm using z690 formula with 13900k and 4090 plus purchased gskill 7600mhz 36cl ram kits but unfortunately current bios doesn't support more than 6400mhz. If you pass this frequency it's giving you errors even with increased dram voltage. While z690 msi boards can succesfully increase frequencies up to 7600mhz our premium asus boards aren't capable of these speeds. That's sad. And i'm now thinking if i should get z790 or keep my current pc at 6400 ram speeds
I could not find what does the A and E means behind the Z790- and I could not find the difference except the colour

for the video card gets reduced to x8
does not seem to be available. To be honest I'd look for pcie gen 4 x16 and pcie gen 5 M.2 as you are more likely to have fast drive in the next 2 years

I dont understand, if you use M.2_1 pcie 1 works x8.
BUT pcie 5.0 x8 is just as fast as pcie 4.0 x16 so why not use M.2_1? Its not degrading the gpu's performance at all.....
this only works if gpu supports PCIE gen 5. If GPU runs in PCIE gen 4 - you will end up running it with 8 lanes which with highest end GPU's will result in lost performance. I am talking 3090-4080 and above cards.
Are there any motherboards that offers two M.2 ports?
I cover that in the video
You have no idea how useful those charts were to me. The business of shared lanes and M.2 slots that don't work if a PCIe socket is occupied, or if all of the M.2 slots are used, you lose half of the SATA ports has been doing my head in. I still don't understand it all, but I think I'll be reasonably safe if I spend large on the Maximus Hero board. That's if they can find one.
there are so many variables in all of these boards its crazy!
Can I pair i7 13th gen 13700f
Is BIOS are going to work properly with this cpu?
thats a negative for the hero, it affects all boards with pcie 5.0 z690 or z790. essentially, it is false marketing, you can never trully utilize a 2nd pcie 5.0 lane. if either slot is occupied its downgraded. OR if a gen 5 ssd is installed in the 1st m.2 slot. TLDR you are paying extra for marketing on the hero, there is zero benefit for a 2nd pcie 5.0 slot on a z690 or z790 board. you missed the entire point.
I have an msi z790p i9 and 4080 oc. Is that ok
where on ROG STRIX Z790-I GAMING WIFI is PCIe5.0 M.2 slot and a PCIe 4.0 I mean is the bottom 4.0 or 5.0 and can I put my ssd m.2 pci 4.0 on 5.0 and whats happen
is there any point in going for ddr5 for gaming in 1440p yet? I'm considering an i7 13700k and ddr4, can always upgrade in the future if need be. ATM I'll probably just go for an extra ssd instead or something else QoL wise.
for gaming 13600k makes by far the most sense. it already has 14 cores... like 13600k is gonna be extremely good this gen. i'm personally getting ddr4 tomahawk z790 motherboard along with 13600k and using the remaining money on nvme drives id otherwise waste on ddr5 or i7/i9. on my opinion i7 makes no sense at all, you either get the i5 or go straight to i9 if you need extra cores. 13700k has only 2 more cores than 13600k, while 13900k has 8 more cores than 13700k.
@@teemuvesala9575 I7 will be way better in the long run and will last 10 years easily for gaming and the price between i5 and I7 is only 100€ in my country, this is nothing
@@shavonme Won’t last 10 years and the i7 has only 2 extra cores over the i5. You will be forced to upgrade long before 10 years as CPUs are advancing now lot faster than they did in the past decade. 100 euros is enough to buy 1TB NVME. Smart money buys either i5 or i9 this gen. i7 is really irrelevant because i9 has 8 more efficiency cores and is simply lot better for multithreaded workloads. For games, there’s practically no difference between i5 and i7 and you only lose 2 p cores. You literally get same number of e cores with i5 as you do with i7. This is the first time in long time when i5 makes lot more sense than i7.
@@shavonme Idk about 10 years but i'd say 5-7 years with some "bottlenecks" down the road. Personally still use 7700k and built it in 2017. I think it's more wise to buy Z690 with DDR4 boards for now
buy boards with DDR5, M.2 PCIE 5 SSD, and PCIE5 GPU support maybe at 14th gen with z890 era
because probably by then, performance will improve much more again, and prices will go down
