Of course the Knights are bad at their jobs, they are picked 100% for what family they come from and it has absolutely nothing to do with competence. Heck ms badguy outright murdered the queen rather than letting a non-noble become a knight...
Yeah!
Also, given that "monsters beyond the wall" thing was a lie, NONE of them have any experience actually FIGHTING monsters so, coming face to face with Nimona (And probably even just fighting in general), they are COMPLETELY not prepared XD
not just that but the director character is suppose to show the bad side of religion's i.e. overzealous and harmful and only pushing there beliefs even if they are untrue or fake as a lot of them pick and choose or rewrite the books to fit there beliefs
"What kind of training do they give these knights?"
Cops. They're the cops.
ACAB
"Gloreth vowed that her people would never again be vulnerable."
Nerdy: "And now they're all emotionally stunted."
Unintentional truth right there.
"It's hard keeping your heart open. It makes you vulnerable, but it doesn't make you weak. And, I have to believe it's worth it."
- Perfuma
The creator said that the reason why they decide to made the world is a futuristic medieval world is as a representation of technology changing but people keeping the same old ideals and some times harmful believes, so I think you pretty much got it spot on or your analysis
Notice the trans flag behind Nimona when she’s talking about how without shapeshifting they wouldn’t be living.
The knights' job is to defend against an imaginary threat. Of course they're incompetent.
They're also the result of several generations of nepotism babies.
ACAB
Nimona as a character is a trans or nonbinary allegory and I love all the little moments they use to show how they see themselves. Their conversation on the subway as Bal tries to understand Nimona by giving them a traditional label, Nimona's beleaguered restating of "I'm Nimona" every time Bal tries to define what they are, the conversation with Bal about what it's like feeling confined to one "shape" for too long. It's all great. And I love the little detailed you pointed out of how Nimona at the end was not attacking anyone, all the destruction was caused by others attacking them due to manufactured panic.
ND Stevenson is the transmasculine author of the original graphic novel this was loosely adapted from and also created the Netflix She-Ra and The Princesses of Power which is equally wonderful and equally queer. While the original story and this film are very different, I can't help but wonder how much of Nimona's character here is informed by ND's own experiences.
Nimona made me realize that I was non binary. Like a bolt of lightning, it was a shocking revelation
@@iambicpentakillCongratulations! This is part of why representation in any form is so important. People don't understand, when you're raised in a certain environment or cut off from certain perspectives, it doesn't erase that part of you. It just makes it so it's hidden from you, still there but hurting, and you can't even name what it is or why. It's so much healthier to recognize and acknowledge that part of yourself.
The thing I like about Nimona, is she can represent any repressed minority, anyone that has been labeled a MONSTER. It shows the social programming we all have had and how cruel and unjustified it can be. I do wish it had more exposure because I feel it resonates with a lot of people, if they only knew about it. Nimona rocks 🤘🤘
Still watching the reaction, but some history:
Nimona was ND Stevenson's* college art project that spun into a webcomic that got very popular on Tumblr.
From there BlueSky acquired rights for the movie, but when Disney bought up Fox properties, they broke up BlueSky and canned this project. Annapurna picked up the rights to it with Netflix and finished the movie into what it is.
The cherry on top is this got Oscar noms while Disney's big 100 anniversary animation Wish got 0.
*ND was show runner for Netflix and Dreamwork's "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power" series that is also amazing and queer!
But the bad news is Nimona lost to studio Ghibli. Hopefully the movie will have a cult following soon, though. It might take a while, but it will get there.
@@Princess_-gp3epAs I understand it, it's actually quite popular among an internet has which I would count as being "a cult favorite". I watched it like a year ago - I had no plans too, it just popped up on my suggestion list and I thought I'd give it a try - and afterwards was trying to describe it to a friend, assuming they would have never heard of it. So I was shocked when she was like "wait, is this called something like Nimona?" Apparently, she'd been hearing about it online for ages.
@@Gildedmuse That makes me glad to hear that Nimona hasn’t been forgotten.
@@Princess_-gp3ep Considering Studio Ghibli movies typically wipe the floor with everyone else, that's not bad or surprising honestly. If you're gonna get beaten, at least get beaten by the best.
@@Princess_-gp3ep On the bright side, Pixar didn’t win. And that’s the studio that keeps hogging the Oscar for best animated feature.
Look at Nimona face when Ballister Boldheart is taking care of her leg. She has never had anyone take care of her before. Also, doesn't England have knights, swords and all.
My 7-year-old niece has been OBSESSED with this movie since it came out and still watches it ALL THE TIME! I adore this movie. ❤️❤️
It's a shame they haven't made any merch out of it. It would be so sick to have plushies and action figures of the characters!
Everyone slept on this. I heard of it first on UA-cam, had never even seen the trailer. I watched it and loved it, then showed it to my daughter and she loved it.
I watched it when it came out, but just because i thought the animation looked neat, wasn't ready for this. And tried to convince everyone i know to watch it since. :D
On rewatches the director going up to Balister at the start and telling him "today the kingdom will see you for who you really are" after making sure he has the modified sword speaks to how broken her brain really is.
She honestly thinks that him being low born but doing a nobel job is the worst thing imaginable and he should be hated, hunted down and imprisoned. And she is willing to end the queen and any bystanders to do it.
I sure am glad there are no crazy people out there with the same mindset for different people in power 😳
And she's always going on about the knights' blood/ancestry being a source of strength and success.
Did you notice that Nimona described the plot of the film when she asked Ballister about his plan before he was arrested?
She even transformed into a Phoenix in order to be reborn.
"She was holding back the entire movie!" .... you have no idea. In the original media, someone took a sample of her blood, and she shapeshifted that into a monster that wrecked shit independent of her partially
The interesting thing about this movie is that it gives you just enough worldbuilding to feel the story and not a lick more. The worldbuilding is simple and if you look too closely there are parts that don't make sense. But it is a sci-fi medieval fantasy world, symbolically being in the future while being stuck far in the past.
I got way too invested in this movie because part of what i took away from this is "how coukd you make a child even think about doing that??" And then realized that there are today, children who think about doing that. ❤ we love nimona.
I have loved everything ND Stevenson has created, from the She-Ra Reboot to Lumberjanes to Nimona. Nimona was originally his webcomic, and was his first work. He wrote this on his substack about creating Nimona and it's stuck with me ever since (punctuation added):
"I didn't know what I was when I first started drawing the comic over a decade ago. I just knew that my emotions were too big for my body, and I had to put them somewhere. There was no pushing them down. One way or another, they came boiling up, a child screaming to be heard...or a monster...that found it a little too easy to draw blood.
From these feelings a character emerged. I named her Nimona, for no particular reason. It just felt right. I didn't think I deserved love - but maybe she did."
Nimona was always a very personal creation for him, and she became a beloved character for so many of his readers. Seeing that they were making this movie had me overjoyed...then devastated when Disney closed the studio, then overjoyed again when production was restarted.
ND Stevenson also wrote an amazing fan comic about Boba Fett on his substack called "This Place Was Home". Short but worth a read.
6:42 "Oh my God! That went south SO FAST!"
Visual. Chaotic. Fluid. Heavy. Emotional.
Heavy.
Glad you guys shared this with us. Its an amazing bit of work. Instant classic.
So glad you’re reacting to Nimona … it’s such a heartwarming movie and one of my favorites on Netflix.
When I watched this the first time, the moment she started the second "I don't know whats scarier" I broke down sobbing. My friends hadn't quite gotten it yet, so they were a few seconds behind me. Its nice to see someone else get it immediately and respond the same.
Great reaction, the "I don't know what's scarier: The fact that everyone in the kingdom wants to run a sword through my heart or that sometimes I just wanna let them." always tears me up. I feel like how Gloreth turns from a child who simply sees things as they are without prejudices to someone who'd raise a (wooden) sword and call Nimona evil just because that's what her parents and other townspeople expect her to do, was a little forced but that's really just a minor nitpick and something I can overlook and still greatly enjoy the movie. Also mad props to Chloë Grace Moretz for voice acting Nimona.
As a sidenote: Have you considered watching Frieren - Beyond Journey's End? Since you do seem to like animes and this one is really great. My guess is it'd be right up your alley.
Ill quote something I commented on another Nimona reaction video.
" I don't see it (the movie) as a one to one analogy and more like of an illustration of what being seen as a villain and othered and isolated could look like. When the system controls what's seen as a hero and what's seen as a monster, and you're gone be seen as the villain no matter what you do, SOMETIMES resorting to violence is the only way to keep existing. It's a self fulfilling prophecy. You see someone as a monster and don't give them the chance to prove otherwise."
I had no idea this would become a movie after reading the comic. It went beyond my expectations and I wish more people watched it. It definitely would have been amazing in theaters. Glad you guys loved it
METAL 🤘🏼☠️🤘🏼
I'm sure Miyazaki's film was no doubt phenomenal (haven't had a chance to see it yet) and but THIS movie should have won the Oscar. I mean, COME ON.
Boy and the Heron was Academy bait. It's Miyazaki, it's hand-drawn, none of the lessons are "too challenging," it's very much what the Academy considers "safe."
Nimona absolutely SHOULD have taken the Oscar. It is, in many ways, the superior story; but it's not a story the Academy would ever recognize beyond the token "here's a nomination, we're not bigots"
Look at Moonlight! They HAD to give it the win! There was no doubt it WAS the best picture of its year; but we gotta appease the Straights, so let's manufacture a reason to give La La Land the time that Moonlight SHOULD have had on stage!
And what won the very next year? Green Book. The movie about White people "inventing" Black culture.
The Academy prioritizes appeasement. Sadly, Nimona is just the latest victim of that.
I totally agree. But I’m sure this movie will have a cult following soon like the iron giant and Disney’s treasure planet.
Fun Fact: ND Stevenson, the writer of the graphic novel, voices the cereal dragon
34:56 You two are such a sweet couple. Please make the relationship last 100 years. Our man is super sweet... and our beauty, while sitting behind an eight fold fence as foil to protect her more vulnerable man, yet occasionally let her softer side peak through. Beautiful reaction to an awesome film.
Him before the pub scene: "something bad's about t happen..." oh buddy... oh sweet summer child, u have no idea T_T
The whole point of the Knights thing is to have the dichotomy of no matter how far we advance, societally we hang on to outdated and unnecessary things like bigotry.
This film BROKE me. I ugly sobbed when I first watched it.
I only caught it when they dropped it on UA-cam and had zero expectations. It grabbed me by the heart and has never let me go.
I unabashedly love this movie to pieces. It’s almost as good as The Secret of NIMH (which is my favourite heartfelt animated movie).
If you haven’t read the graphic novel yet, plz do!
It’s awesome!
I wept too.
Every time.
What a great pick for movie of the month. If you liked this movie, you should absolutely check out the 2018 She-Ra and the Princesses of Power series, the same person who came up with Nimona was the head of that show and its really good!
Oh man, what I wouldn’t give to see these two reactors do a reaction series on She-Ra. Its such a well-written show, with deep and complex characters. I think they would love it, its right up their alley.
Nimona is extremely underrated, both the book and movie. I laughed, and I almost cried during the last 20 minutes of the film.
Did a double take when you name dropped the Lord Ruler. Never thought to compare this city to Luthadel but I can totally see it.
33:37 ‘‘i get it you‘re blonde ‘‘ BRO JUST ROSTED ALL BLONDS 😭😭🙂 rip to my besti😂
thoroughly enjoyed your reaction and chat - inspired me to subscribe, and very happy to see The Expanse in your catalogue: definitely alignedi in taste, looking forward to more - cheers from Melbourne, Australia
Very open emotions, reacting to the movie and having a discussion about the deeper meaning of the movie, connecting it to things within your own experience? Now that's what I call transformative content! I would actually like to see more. Not that you need my approval or anything.
This was a lot of fun to watch with yout two, you have delightful reactions to this movie. I really enjoyed Nimona the movie even though it's wildly different from the web comic. Blue Sky did such an amazing job with Nimona's animation, plus the humor was hilarious. My one major critique for the movie was that Nimona and Balthazar's friendship was instantanous, akin to fever touch, whereas in the comic they had worked together for years and develped a friendship. But that's me being nit picky on an otherwise delightful romp.
Also appreciate you two talking about the real world implications of othering people and how countries often invent their own legends (and specifically reminding folks about Tulsa, Oklahoma). I immediately thought of the myth of the Wild West which was essentially a vaudville show invented by some guy to sell tickets.
Love love LOVE that this movie is finally getting some more recognition, I was some of the lucky few that saw its trailer a couple days before release and shared it with my family, this movie is easily one of my all time favorites. ❤
I'm so glad I stayed for the analysis. I got a lot out of your discussion ♡♡
I loved the reaction. This movie is so fantastic and makes me cry every single time. That scream from Nimona when she is about to push her heart against the sword is so heart wrenching.
Gosh I have a big ol cartoon crush on Nimona.
Love the HELL out of this little movie
And you two!!
I saw it in the cinema, and it was amazing! The laughter and reactions from the crowd was so nice.
This is based off the graphic novel “Nimona” by the same creator ND Stevenson which actually has a bit of a different story and different things they don’t touch on like how Nimona got her powers! Also it’s a bit bloody so warning on that!
Amazing movie. A work of art in every aspect.
Tbh, I've seen all three movies (Into the Spider-Verse, Nimona and the Boy and the Heron), and while I love Ghibli - Nimona and Spider-Verse got robbed. Either of them was better than Boy and the Heron.
I think that not only the movie but also your thoughts on it and the way you talk about them are really interesting. I've noticed that with this movie especially 100% of trans/Nonbinary/Gender Non-conforming people pick up on the trans themes in the movie almost immediately, but like 80%+ of Cisgender people never even come close. I feel like Y'all might have gotten closer to the trans themes of this film than a lot of cisgneder react channels that I've seen, which makes me incredibly happy.
HOW have you guys not seen this yet?!?
So glad you got to watch this
Im so glad you guys watch this film. It was a great graphic novel and yes it deserved to be nominated to Oscar’s. It was a tough competition. Miles morale across the spider verse, the boy and the heron, elemental. Any of those picks would have been a great choice
This movie has strong Iron Giant vibes. Btw, have you guys watched The Iron Giant?
I'm so glad you watched this! Highly recommend the graphic novel, as well. They made quite a few changes but I definitely also appreciate how they were able to adapt it to the different medium. I love both!
I absolutely loved this movie. I'm so happy that you reviewed this.
I love your take on the message of the movie! You're the first reactors I've seen who think of it as primarily a story about institutionalized mythology. Mind you, I still think it's mostly an allegory about being non-binary or gender fluid and about the dangers of "other-ization" of people you don't understand, but now that you mention it there is also some truth to the angle you see.
But I think it all ties together well: our decision of who counts as "the other" is based in the mythology we were raised on, which is rarely based on historical truth or modern facts. It is just baked into the fabric of our society and rarely questioned.
I predict the laughs at the start will not be around at the end.
If you liked the themes of this movie you should check out the Disney show The Owl House (if you haven't already). Despite it being a Disney property it is extremely progressive and inclusive and also deals with themes of authority/fascism, the idea of found family and lgbt rights/acceptance (among many other very deep topics).
I think you'd like the webcomic this is based on. The author made sure the characters were kept as close to the original as possible, while making it more kid friendly.
"Pinneapple on pizza? BLEEGH!" Best line of the movie!!
Okay, "there's no movie called 'Blood Peridot,'" kind of went hard
But it could be a screamo album
Agree, this would be a perfect film for theatre!
Diamond Boy
you're the first reactors I've seen to notice Pizza Rat lol
I recently just saw this movie. It's a good sleeper flick!
this is everything i love in a great story the writing, visuals, acting and the overall story. she makes me think of a female Deadpool
I highly suggest checking out the original graphic novel by N.D. Stevenson. While a lot of it is the same, a lot of it is different as well.
I sure that I've asked you both to watch this movie that I love with all my heart. I'm 75, male and straight. I have many friends of all so-called types.
would love if you wanted to see Nocturna
One of my favorite graphic novel/webtoons - so well written and illustrated. So when I heard they were doing a movie, I got nervous. And then they knocked it out of the park.
And can we give some love to Chloë Grace Moretz? You could shave with how sharp she delivered those lines XD
I just saw a movie like this that hit me with unexpected feels, Afterlife of the Party. A Netflix movie that made me cry like a baby.
What’s it called
I love the third act, Nimona's past, how she was about to su1c1de, this movie knows how to make you cry.
You guys should watch Mr church it stars Eddie Murphy and Britt Robertson. It's an popular movie but a really good one. It is a movie based on a true story about friendship and chosen family. It deal with death and trauma. It's based on a true story.
You did an amazing job with this movie... it's a complex story, but it's all there for folks paying attention.
And it might be even better than (some) Star Wars.
The knights almost seemed like figure heads/ sports stars. could just be an honorary thing. they had that sports thing kinda vibe to them. after all they were there to fight monsters that didn't exist and weren't a threat so its not like they needed real skill. they just stand around and pose and just act like celebrates if you really think about it.
if you want to learn more about the world building then you should read the graphic novel that its based of
Fuck yes fuck yes!!
It proved it when the wall was destroyed and people saw there were no monsters
Absolutely love this movie
Ah... The Tulsa massacre. Other than being a phenomenal show, bringing thag to light was the best thing the Watchmen HBO series did.
At this point I just watch a movie so I can check out the reaction lol
I love your guys videos and channel. Please do more family movies and horror movies ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
As someone who went into "The Boy and the Heron" and came out not really feeling anything beyond "Boy, this animation sure is gorgeous" I both can and can't see how it beat out spiderverse and Nimona. Based on what I'd read after seeing it, much of the impact relies upon having pre-existing detailed knowledge about the life and beliefs of the creator to understand the metaphors present in the movie, which is definitely something I can see the academy gravitating towards, and probably hit quite well for the people in the know. However, speaking as someone who was NOT in the know, I personally prefer my media to be able to stand on its own to the point where almost anyone, regardless of background, can connect with it. And in that category I'd say spiderverse and nimona win hands down.
YMMV of course. The academy awards aren't the arbiter's of good taste regardless of their prestige, but then, neither am I.
Those award ceremonies are rife with corruption anyway, this is all based on how much goodies the movie spend on woowing the judges.
I never thought about how Nimona and Beast Boy could be the same person but yea. One could easily transition to the other if they wanted.
My birthstone is paste.
Wonderful movie.
Also I'm an adult, and while watching this movie, I realized for the first time in my life that I was non binary - when he is annoyed that Nimona doesn't want him to call them a girl, and frustratedly asks something like, "Well what are you?" and Nimona replies, "I'm Nimona." ... It was all so obvious and my mind was blown
New to your channel, I've heard good things... I truly hope after this you guys are gonna check out Hazbin Hotel.
This movie is actually how i found you guys,... did you research the history and how disney tried to kill this>??? I am so loving you for this darlings ~!!! WAIT, WHEN YOU SAY QUEER do you mean 'unusual' ? LOL.. love you babies (and it is your fault for marrying an aries)
I'm glad you guys love this movie, but Nerdy being confused and caught up on "how does the economy of the city work" is peak Nerdy missing the forest for the trees
Watching this movie turned out to be a very weird experience for me. Halfway through I suddenly realized that I already knew Nimona. I had somehow forgotten that I had read the webcomic religiously for a while. Huh. Memory can be weird.
Watch Steven Universe!!!!! Let's see if you rethink about peridot
1:16:47 Me
Okay so lore dump, the producer of this movie wrote the original comic back in 2012 -2014 so while the movie is very different from the comic the original premise has been out there for a while. The original comic (written by a trans author) was about a little girl being unfairly slaughtered and labelled a monster. Where this movie is about a little girl being seen by those she cares about.
Please do more kids or family movies. I love your videos and channel ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ ❤ ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Take this with a grain of salt, because I read this in a different comment section, but if I remember correctly Nimona doesn't come back at the end of the comic that this is based on. The movie's creators felt that queer people deserved a more hopeful ending since the anti-LGBTQ movement is steadily regrowing, so they wanted to bring some more positivity back into the community.
The knight system is a completely useless set of armored 'peace keepers' that are put into place and sustained by a population that's been so indoctrinated against the 'monsters' outside that they don't even realise that the knights never actually fight anything.
They probably serve for a certain number of years in 'glory' and then retire, and no one questions it.
The director realized (or was taught by a predecessor) that there really weren't any monsters out there, and likely knew that opening up the ranks of the knights to the regular populace would eventually raise the question of "wait, why aren't we actually fighting anything? This is all a sham."
She wanted to keep control and gain power for herself and needed a 'monster' of some kind to defeat and raise herself up, so she targeted the guy, and used peoples beliefs and prejudices against them.
Nimona is good.
Kiki’s Delivery Service may have the widest appeal from Studio Ghibli, 1:43 tho.
Longer TV shows like Dragon Prince is pretty good too and Final Space comes to mind.
What in Gloreth's name are you on about?
Nimona's not from Studio Ghibli, it didn't compete against Kiki's Delivery Service at the Oscars, it has more of a following than Boy and the Heron, and it's not a TV show.
So it sounds like you're just trying to derail the conversation from an LGBTQ+ allegory about the dangers of institutional bigotry to whatever IP YOU find personally acceptable.
Step back.
