I think my favorite detail in the argument about her being a monster, Ballister himself is shocked that he immediately went for his sword. It pans to his face and he looks down at his hand just wide-eyed. Because actions speak louder than words, and sometimes your body speaks what you don't realize is in your own head.
Reminds me of Zootopia and how Nick interrogates Judy if she was afraid of him. After he extends his claws out at her saying, "You think I might try to EAT YOU!?" she immediately puts a hand in motion as if to say "stand back" while loosening her fox repellent. It's when Nick understands what she really thought about him that she feels remorse and shocked at what she was about to do to him out of fear and prejudice. Nick, as well as the other "savage" predators, might as well have always been seen the monsters in that moment.
This movie was so good. So funny, so heartbreaking, great representation, but maybe the best of all - NIMONA TURNS INTO AN ARMADILLO MULTIPLE TIMES! Goated film just for that.
my favourite thing about the director's depiction is that they give her a very real reasoning and motive and DON'T make her sympathetic. She's acting out of fear, but she's not misunderstood or desiring to do good. Villains can be DYNAMIC AND MULTIDIMENSIONAL WITHOUT BEING REDEEMABLE. THERE'S NOTHING WRONG WITH REDEEMABLE VILLAINS BUT VILLAINS DON'T HAVE TO BE REDEEMABLE TO BE COMPLEX.

If I had a nickel for every time a character played by Chloe Moretz Grace kicked butt while the rock version of The Banana Splits Show theme played in the background, I would have two nickels. It’s not a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice!
Nate Stevenson wrote and drew Nimona while still at art school, and originally released it over time on his Tumblr, which was where I read it. It got picked up and printed as a book, winning an Eisner award, before being adapted into this movie. The story is not the same, but the main characters and overall themes are. Meanwhile, Nate wrote a bunch of other stuff for graphic novels and TV before becoming showrunner on 'She-Ra and the Princesses of Power', which is a fantastic piece of character-driven story-telling spread over 52 episodes on Netflix.
As someone with very personal experience with suicide (I have been for the past 4 or 5 years and lost my mom back in 2022) I love and greatly respect and appreciate how it is portrayed in the movie. It holds nothing back but says it in a way that you’ll be able to listen and understand and won’t be “put off”.
not sure if you picked up on it but when Ballister finally asked if it hurt when Nimona changed was not a small minded question because it was the first question he had that took into consideration her as a person. All of the other questions were about him and his own personal being.
I'm so so glad you got the "monster" symbolism in the movie. Also loved "I'm glad they didn't have me rooting for the cops," cause thats so real. Like,,, you got it
Yesss!!! Nimona was one of my favorite films and definitely touching. Love how queer-coded she is, love how poignant the lines are when they need to be, just loved it!
I'm 100% sure I'm not the first person to pick up on this but I'll say it anyway. Because it was one of my favorite themes they laid out throughout the movie. The fact that the setting was medieval but futuristic felt to me like a statement on how even as we progress as societies, we are still very much tethered by our past. Is that a good thing or a bad one, up for debate. I personally believe its the real reason we can't get over some of the hurdles we're facing now in our own society - and it feeeeeelt like the mesh of medieval and futuristic science fiction was saying that too. I could be way wrong though. Just liked it on my end. XD
Dudeeeeee, this made me cry over this movie all over again 😭😭😭 I also super appreciate your perspective on things!! Made me see the overall movie and the small details it has in a newer light. And you're not wrong, the visual storytelling in this film is truly stellar
I swear I cry every time I watch this movie no matter how many times I see it. I HIGHLY recommend the graphic novel, which is the source material for this movie. I read it when I was in high school and it's stuck with me for many years the book & the movie have the same characters and same overall themes, but they kinda feel like AUs / alternate versions of each others stories. without going into actual spoiler territory and just covering the basics, in the book ballister is ballister blackheart instead of boldheart, and is an actual "villain". he & ambrosious are also actual rivals / nemeses instead of boyfriends who just got thrown into a messy situation. they still feel like the same characters, but it feels like an alternate version of the events & a "what if". both are absolutely excellent in their own ways, and the book made me cry just as much as the movie super happy to see you reacted to this !! I love all of your reactions and I'm really excited for the gravity falls reactions. Oh man I'll definitely have to check out the book then! Indi actually watched this one around when it came out so that's why I ended up doing this solo.
ND Stevenson (the creator of Nimona) is a non-binary trans person and describes the difference between the comic and the movie as how they saw Nimona's story before transition and after transition.
I like how the ending makes it seem like she was really gone, and you get a feeling that things would be okay if she really was, but then BAM last second we're hit with sequel material!!
Nimona is my favorite animated movie of 2023 and of all time. I’m very glad that this underrated film was saved by Netflix and Annapurna pictures after blue sky studios shut down.
Idk if you're gonna do more series reactions after steven universe and gravity falls, but if you are you should definitely consider taking on The Owl House. It is an incredible show and has very similar themes to Nimona. it's also essentially by the same people as gravity falls (story board artist on Gravity Falls, Dana Terrace, is the creator and Alex Hirsch, the creator of Gravity Falls voices several characters in it).

Expanding on something you said here- and you're the first reactor I have seen bring this up- "History is written by the victors". Gloreth wasn't a woman who slayed a monster; she wasn't even a woman, she was a little girl with a wooden sword. We have no idea what really happened 2,000 years ago, but people quote the Bible as fact. It's not fact, it's stories told by men (no women, of course), all many, many years after the actual events.
