Pack in a Carry-On Suitcase: The Better Way!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 2 сер 2024
- There is an easier way to pack a carry-on suitcase for a trip. I will show you travel tips to pack those outfits in your bag with these easier steps. The first way to pack easier is to lay out your outfits like I did. The second way to pack that carry-on is to use the space in-between your suitcase handle bars. Travel Hack: I packed a thin pair of flip flops in an old Amazon bag.

After I pack most of my carryon, I zip it up and set it upright. That allows things to settle, and then I have more room on the top for stuffing little things! Thanks Laurie!
Yes that is a great packing hack!
It also makes sure it won't fall over when set upright 😂 (I've had that happen to me more times than I care to count).

With only a few weeks left until our big trip out west, I did a trial pack yesterday with all my new travel tips. One hack I learned is that I put my make up pouch in my fanny pack. I can't believe I am going to be able to pack all my stuff in a carry on for almost three weeks. I am going over all your videos, in case I forgot anything. Thanks for all your tips.
Wow I am so impressed! Way to go. Let me know any tips when you return.
So appreciate your tips!
I bought the compression packs you suggested and used them a couple weeks ago for a 2 week trip to Europe. OMG, they were wonderful! They really helped me to pair down what I took and to fit everything in a smaller suitcase than I usually take for long trips like that. I was lugging my own suitcase this time (no hubby to do the heavy moving for me) and usually use the plastic space bags. They always took up too much space and never fit right in the case. I folded my clothes instead of rolling this time and there actually WAS less wrinkling. I stayed in several different places and found the best part of these bags was that I could quickly unpack and find exactly what I needed. I loved them so much that I just bought a set for my husband as we are heading off to Tahiti next Saturday and want to pack him lite too. (Yep, it’s true, I’m getting in all that travel pent up need in as much as I can this summer 😂). I’ve also used your suggested black/white carryon backpack for several short trips already this year. Can’t live without it now. Been watching you for a long time and so glad I took your advice on these tools and packing suggestions. These took my packing to a whole new worry-free level. Have fun at your seminar!
It took me forever to try them and now I love them!
We just did an Amtrak train trip and I used your ideas for the "carry-on" for the Roomette. I was so organized that everything worked great for me in the tiny Roomette space. My hubby however, after the first night, said the Roomette was too small. I think that may have been because he didn't pack well, packed last minute and didn't have good access to his stuff. Thank you so much for all the suggestions, you never know when it will come in handy.
I love it! Experience does help you know what you do not need and that org helps.
I lay everything out in advance. Then the night before travel, I will begin putting everything into my suitcase and personal item. I always remove one item, whether it's a shirt or shoes, hearing you say match this with that! It helps so much to edit and pare it down! Thanks for all of your tips!
That's a great idea! I took out a shirt just today. And tried them all on.
Thank you for the advise
Ollie is so cute!
Thank you Laurie you are the best
You are so welcome!
Yes Mrs Laurie, seeing a visual of the demonstration of packing really helps me to ready my bags for a small flight we go next month. So now I understand the liquids go in the personal bag. Learning so much from you… and of course Ollie. Such a sweet looking pup. Thanks for your help Laurie.
I’m so happy for you! I also have a video called Airline Jargon to learn the terms.
We went to Europe for 15 days about 6 weeks ago. I used many of your tips, tricks and hacks. We stressed less! But we still over packed, LOL.
Just wanted to say thanks!
Thanks for sharing!! I overpacked for Hawaii-took 4 pairs of shoes!
You'll get better and better with each trip, don't worry. It took me years - and many, many mistakes - to get where I am now.
I love you Lauri🙏🌹 Thank you so much for all the tips.
So glad! Thanks!
Thanks Laurie for all of ur traveling tips and packing tips! I always rewatch ur older videos before I take a trip and I am always less stressed when I follow ur advice. This was another good video with some awesome tips! Thanks for sharing 🥰💐💜🌸
I hope you have a great trip!
I love your videos. Thanks
Thank you! Hope you have a great trip this summer.
More great tips! Thanks
Hope they help when you pack!
Thanks for all your travel tips. I've learned so much from you!
Glad you like them!
I’ve been watching your videos for the past month learning all of your tips and info about packing lite while traveling. I’m retiring from teaching next Wednesday and so ready to travel the world. Thank you Laurie for the excellent content.
That is awesome! Congrats on making it! Both my teachers are retired teachers...as am I after 8 years. Have fun!
Thank you for teaching!!
I retired 5 yrs ago after teaching for 35 yrs. I’m going on my 3rd trip to Europe! Never thought I’d get to ! I enjoy all your tips!!
Always helpful information ,thanks for sharing. I look forward to your videos 😊
Thank you! I hope your trips are wonderful and you pack just enough.
Headed to Europe in a week and I’ve been watching your videos. You are my go to for packing tips and getting through the airport..thank you!
Glad you like them! Have a blast!
I am SO in love with Aullie!! He's adorable!
Thanks so much! He helps me pack.
Hi Laurie! I saw that little seat back pack last night at TJ Maxx, and now might go back and buy it. I am a non-rev, standby passenger, too, and never know if there will be room for my roller carry on suitcase. So what I have started doing is pack a small "to go" bag inside my carry on suitcase with a couple of changes of clothes, so that I can pull it out of my roller bag if they make me gate check it. That way, if my gate checked bag gets lost or delayed (which occasionally does happen), at least I've got some clothes for a few days with me if needed. I always keep medication, electronics, toiletries & a spare pair of glasses in my personal item. Thanks as always for the great tips!
So smart! Yes a compression cube is what I will use sometimes.
You do such a good job giving us great tips, links, and I love your happy demeanor. It's a pleasure learning with you! (Now off to enjoy "shopping" even if it's just mentally on your links!)
Love that you said this. Thanks!
LOVE the Fanny pack tip!
I am waiting on two to arrive! Going to try it.

Wonderful tips, as always. You don’t know how much you are appreciated 😊
You're the best!
Squish, moosh, repeat. LOVE it!!
You are ready to go!
Thank you so much for your tips! I recently travelled for a week across the US, having purchased some of your suggested items and having packed according to your tips and it was a super successful trip. So appreciated!
Ooh what a wonderful trip that sounds like! My parents both taught so we camped/drove from GA to CA and back for five weeks a couple of summers growing up.
Hi Lauri...
Thank you for your time and efforts in helping so many of us to learn to 'smoosh n squish' & minimize, plus the intimidation of the TSA walk through. I've referred so many to your videos in planning their travels. Your ideas have relieved so much stress for us and thank you! Happy travels and adventures to all!
Thank you so much Eileen!
I purchased your suggested compression bags for flying to Disneyland back in October and they worked so much better then the packing cubes 😀 I need a new liquids bag so I’m going for that turquoise one 👏🏻 We are going to Hawaii next month so I have a packing list but this time I’m going to go ahead and make a list for my liquids! I’m always going crazy at the last minute taking things in and out of my liquids bag. Thank you for your great suggestions 🤗
It still takes me forever to pack! I have a video called what not to forget to pack for Hawaii in case you need it. So beautiful!
Thank you so much for the rapid response. Just ordered
Thank you for watching!

I am currently watching all your videos because I just booked a solo group trip to Ireland and Scotland for 16 days and added 11 days in France and I need all the help I can get not to overpack and go as minimal as possible. I appreciate all your tips and tricks. Thank you
Hey Laurie, love your channel!! Thank you for the amazing and useful content. Would you consider doing an episode on stand by travel - tips, tricks and what to expect ? Thank you
Hi! Since each airline is different I just do not think it would be helpful. Sorry
Wonderful video! I think you just sold me on some of these items 😂❤️❤️ I'll get the compression cubes first and have fun doing that Marie Condo folding!
I love Olly’s head tilts! I’ve learned to pack so much easier thanks to your videos!
Thanks for taking the time to say that Melissa! Which state are you in now?
Hi Ollie. Looks like he’s loving your choice in clothes. Love your tee today. Even though my hubby and I are avid travelers, I still learn tips from you. We are traveling next week using just carry-ons. I bought the Travelon iPad seat back holder you shared and will be doing a video on it, giving you props in the video. TFS.
Love it!! Thanks Bev! Have a wonderful trip!
Can’t thank you enough, thank you again. I watch your videos faithfully and you are a life saver for me and my girls. I’m looking for packing cubes
Thank you! have a wonderful girls trip!
A tip for packing cubes - when deciding what size(s) of ones to get, make sure you measure the inside of your suitcase(s) so you know what kind of space they will need to fit into. I was debating between a couple different sets for a while, but ultimately decided which ones to get based on which set would fit my suitcase best dimension-wise; now, even when I have them completely stuffed, they still fit perfectly in my suitcase.
I love your idea of having a crossbag on the personal bag. I will do that. Thanks.👍
Yes so helpful!
Ollie is adorable 😍
He sends his love.
You’re the best. Thanks for the update and all of the links. I love to shop your links.
I am so glad you do ha. Here is my newest video just today: bit.ly/2022MistakesTSA

Thank you so much, Laurie. I’ve been watching many of your videos and you are so friendly and helpful. You have helped me a lot. I think this is my first time commenting. After having survived cancer I want to take that trip and not put it off ❤️ I travel 3-4 times a year now, where before I would go a couple years between trips
Oh yes, live life to the fullest...wherever you are! Welcome to our community!
Silicone pot handles are great for hot irons. Nice one today🐠
Awesome idea! We do have one but it's short. Thanks!
Great tips, Laurie! I travel frequently, but I’ve never been brave enough to go carry on only. I’m one of those over packers who likes options. I’m good at condensing toiletries and cosmetics, but not the clothes. Maybe I’ll try it for a short trip to see how I get on. Mary 🌺
You should try it Mary!
I look forward to seeing the red dot indicating you have a new video - always love your tips! If I mention any type travel detail to my husband, he’ll ask me if Laurie told me that.😂 Thanks, Laurie!
Love it Linda! Thank you.
You have the cutest packing buddy!
I think so too!
Because of all your tips, I was able to pack for a destination wedding in a more organized fashion. Thank you Laurie for creating this channel.
Yay! Glad you had a great trip!
You always have great tips!! I used my sister’s hard side suitcase last week for a trip. I do like having more room, but I don’t like the way it rolls. I guess it is because I have been using my TravelPro for so long. I’m considering getting one for our trip to Europe this fall, because I can take a few more bulky clothes. I leave in two weeks with my mom for Europe. After my sister and I booked our trip for October, my next to youngest daughter told me good I would be here for the birth of her first baby!! And that is how I found out I’m going to be a grandmother for the eighth time!!!! Miss Elizabeth Rose will be here mid-September!! So now I will have 4 boys and 4 girls!! So excited!! ❤️
Oh how exciting!!
I always wear my heaviest items on the plane. My biggest challenge is living in a cold weather climate versus going to a hot one. I normally buy toiletries when I arrive then just leave behind to save room. LOVE your packing cubes!
Thanks for sharing! Great travel hack.
The photo with you and your family makes me laugh every single time.
Haha me too!
Currently traveling, I still LOVE watching you for tips. I just discovered a hack. I used a dental pick to un clump a big mascara clump. It works! Safe travels😎
Ha! Love it! I can see how that would work. Have a great vacation!!
Such an influencer ! Back to Amazon i go for some of these products! Used the compression bags on our 5 day trip to Ojai, and they were such a help! I think the only thing I didn't think of was a tote for day trips to each family members house and the associated activities. Might have to try that one you showed for beach. Thank you for sharing and taking the time to do all the work it takes to get videos out to us!
Thanks for sharing!! I hope you get many uses out of your essentials you bought. Wow, Ojai!!
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie if you get a few days to play, that would be a great girls weekend get away or a relaxing time for you and hubby. very old town, but upscale. Have to experience "the PINK MOMENT".
Great tips😍
Thanks; I hope they help you pack.
Always great tips. I still like my soft sided best, hard-side is hard for me on many levels.
I’m taking the hard shell on another trip soon so maybe I’ll pick up more reasons either way.
Just ordered the wet/dry bags! 😁
My little "hack" for curling iron or flat iron, I use an old sock to slip it into. That's not a "heat proof" cover, I just use it to protect the iron from getting scratched and also to protect whatever is touching it to not get transfer residue of hair products that may be on the tool.
Yes that is a great travel hack! And a sock that is 100% cotton is awesome.
Nearing the end of a 10 day trip to visit my mum (same country as me, but 4,000 km away, quite a different climate, and during the transitional fall season), I would like to suggest another tip. About a month before your trip, choose the clothing and shoes you think you want to pack, set them aside, and use those clothes and ONLY those clothes and shoes for the next week. See if hey work for everything you do in a normal day. Check if those shoe you think are comfortable will work for you if you are walking all day. Take a day for each pair of shoes and don't take them off all day. See how your feet feel at the end of the day. It might alert you to gaps in your packing or things that don't work quite as well together or feel as comfortable as you thought. Doing it a few weeks in advance will let you wash the clothes and have them ready to pack, or choose replacements if hey are not as practical as you think they are.
It's interesting that in the US you can have a personal item bag and a carry-on. I think that here in the UK you can only have one bag in the cabin, so your personal item and your carry on are the same piece of luggage - I think that's how it works. Two items seems quite a luxury! I like the seat back organiser idea for the plane. I'm going to look for one of those! :)
I love that shirt your wearing. I use packing cubes and keep saying I need those compress cubes!!! Lol totally understand the non rev life too!!!! Great video
Took me years to try the compression cubes. Love them! Happy travels. Oversold flight tomorrow that I'm trying to get on lol
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie good luck on your flt sometimes people don’t show up and you get on!🙏🏻
I have used a soft side suitcase and hard side suitcase. The hard side is nice and water proof however
Hi Laurie going through carry on videos of yours to pack mine this evening x
So how did it go?
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie very well. Heavy case though to lift onto the security tray. 😀
I Love you. Thanks for your Subscription. God bless you and your family. Thankfully, PRAKASH!
Yes! And if I pack, close bag and set upright near the door the night before, the next morning there is lots of space on top, for "almost forgot" items
Yes shake it down so your essentials jostle down some. Have a great trip!
I'm notorious for overpacking and having a heavy suitcase i will try the compression cubes and force myself to use a smaller suitcase.

I cut out a 2x2 square inch plastic wrap and I place it between the lid and bottle of my shampoo and conditioner. It helps to prevent leaks.
That is a great travel hack!
I use an excel spread sheet and list everything down the left, which suitcase/pouch it needs to be packed in, and then put a mark in the appropriate box as I’m making my list.
That is a great way to pack and only take what you need.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie it works for me. I just keep reusing the same one, editing as needed for the current trip.

Thank you for all your wonder tips and tricks. They have been so helpful. I love your shirt. My birthday is coming up and I think it's perfect for the occasion. Do you have a link?
Hi, I do not have a link. It was a shirt from Macy's.
Hello Laurie...and Aullie ! Another great vlog and I have to ask if you remember where you got the flamingo? I need that for Vinnie on the Airstream.
Sorry for the delay: bit.ly/3za1ZqK
Laurie, would you do a video on how to fly stand by; why fly standby; pros and cons ? I’ve been curious since you mention that is the only way you fly.
Hmmm I will think. Sounds boring to me lol.
I love the compression cubes. They really allow more items in a compacted space. I use the fanny pack trick every time. In it, I keep the absolute necessities: passports, credit cards/$$$ (in the mini pink RFID Travelambo), cell phone, and meds. If an emergency occurs, the fanny pack is attached to me and it will make it down the slide. Love the ranger roll.
I love them too! Took me years to try them.
Thanks again for the great tips and advice!
Thank you!
I sure do appreciate your content. Do you have any tips for packing for a longer trip? Like 4-6 weeks?
Also, girl, get you an ebook going. Your stuff has value!
Hi, I have thought about courses etc but it's too much. Here is a long trip like 10 days trip video. I would check a bag: bit.ly/10DayPackingTips
I always plan to do laundry, whether laundry service is available (hotel, cruise ship, whoever's house I'm staying at, etc.) or I have to do it myself in the sink, and if I have to do it in the sink, I always wash as I go so I never run out of anything. This past Christmas, even though it was a road trip, I still fit everything I needed into a carryon and personal item (I don't count bags of medical stuff because they don't count as carryon when flying - I have to travel with enough that they need their own bags), and Minnesota gets real winter, so I needed enough warm clothes. This Christmas was 4 weeks; last Christmas, it was 6 weeks and I still almost managed to fit it all into my carryon and backpack - I'll note that the only carryon suitcase I own is a bit smaller than standard, about 19"x12"x7.5", so I'm sure if I had a standard size one, I would have managed perfectly fine. I always roll my clothes really tight and stuff my packing cubes so much that they basically act as compression cubes - even when the cubes are all stuffed to the max, there's still room in my suitcase for a couple pairs of shoes (in bags), a small laundry bag, my toiletries, my purse, a pair of slippers, and another few small items that pack flat. Most of my trips where I fly are 3 1/2 weeks long, and since those are warm weather, I can always fit everything (minus medical) into my backpack and carryon without any problems.
I have packing cubes but took advantage of prime day bought set compression cubes due to only trying take carry on. I do have vaccum or storage bags I guess I could have tried rolling . I’ll be doing laundry at friends so that helps
Oh yes laundry makes all the difference!
Remember not to wear white on the plane
Hi, Ollie! ❤️
I love your Ollie!! Beautiful eyes.
He's the sweetest!
My teenage daughter will be traveling from Maine to Florida in February with her step-dad and uncle to see their parents. She waz devastated when I told her she'd be only allowed a personal item since they usually fly spirit out of Boston. I promised I'd help and am trying to convince her to watch some of your videos. If she "forgets" I will re-watch to help. She's very much a makeup, shoes and accessories girl so very not like me.
Helpful video! I saw your beautiful hanging toiletry bag and remembered when I used them…however, hotels have become so cheap when it comes to hooks….try finding any, maybe one on back of the door….all this wall space and no hook! My toiletry bag would flop over on the counter so I switched to smaller bags that stand upright on the counter…
We use a towel bar sometimes-putting towels on the counter is so trendy so I agree
Laurie I need your help! I love your videos because they’re so helpful when I’m going to travel again to see my boyfriend! This is gonna be my first time with a layover! Can you make a video explaining that process? I’m so nervous! Thanks! 😊
Hi and yay! So a layover just means you are stopping over for a bit. You may or may not change airplanes and parking spots. You will go through security once and if you check a bag, it will show up in Baggage Claim at your final destination. Your carry-on bags stay with you. Just check your airline's app when you land at the first stop. Type in your flight number of the next airplane, and the app will tell you (while you're driving to your gate) which gate you need to go to in order to fly to the next destination. Does that help>
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie yes that’s very helpful thank you so much!!
You can stuff lots of different items into tennis shoes which would otherwise be dead space.
Such a great tip that I forget to do since they're in a bag. Thanks!
I’m trying to travel lighter and you have provided some really GREAT tips! Many thanks😍
What size do you use for your carry on suitcase?
Hi! Mine is 22 inches and has never been turned away in regular sized airplanes. Maybe the handle makes it 23" but I've been using it for 20 years-got a new one 10 years ago.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie Thank you for your reply!
Great ideas, I read or heard somewhere to unzip the suitcase liner and place your shoes between the bars and zip it back up. I tried it with my sandals in my under seater and it worked because I am flying Sprit next month and can only take a personal item to not to be charged. When I am thinking of packing it I keep thinking of you pouches.
Those pouches are great. Can't wait to pack again.
I'm flying a similar airline. What kind of personal item are you taking that can fit everything? My backpack is too long in length. Max is 16" for Allegiant Airlines
I am packing under seater which is small but it will fit everything.
Such useful information thanks Laurie. Can I ask what nail polish you are wearing?
Hi, it's OPI Lima Tell You About This Color haha: bit.ly/3Ga8tKx
Have you seen the zippered wrist pockets for runners? They don't look like you're carrying another bag. They look like you might have a strain. Money, cards, and id fit perfectly. Might save you switching the cross body bag in and out in the airport. Also, saved me from a room robbery on a group trip.
Will definitely look this up.
I have seen those!
I’ve found if I have a lot of stuff to unzip the extension (even though the airlines won’t allow that but bare with me for a minute) then zip up my suitcase normally and then zip up the extension and then it compresses everything and you’re not trying to fight with your suitcase 😂
Love it
Hello Laurie, I'm a fan from Australia. I've watched all your travel tips through the pandemic. They kept my dream of travelling again alive. Question regarding the compression packing cubes. I have them but didn't get to use them, so now that I'm free to get going again, would you recommend rolling clothes to put into compression bags or folding?
Hi, I fold b/c that is faster for me. Try it out with 4 shirts and see which is easier for you.
Since I go from hot weather to cold, I take lots of sweaters, so I roll (no ironing needed!) I learned the hard way never to take shirts that need ironing. Bless those compression cubes!
Be careful taking a ceramic hair curling iron on a trip. I took my to Prague/river cruise and it broke/stopped working. It was a hassle trying to find a replacement in Europe and then it was useless at home with the European plug. I use $1 store shower caps on my shoes to keep things clean.
Such a great travel hack!
do u have a video on men's personal items bags?
Hi and I apologize for the delay. I have a couple: How to Pack Like a Pilot and What Men Wear to Europe and Packing Tips for Men.

Hi, here it is: bit.ly/38dbDMF I hope it's still available.
Question for you Laurie, are we allowed to pack hair mousse and hairspray in the checked bag? I normally don’t bring those, but my next trip is to Portugal and I will have a few more formal dinners. Merci!
Hi you are but it has to be a certain size I think. Go to tsa.gov and in top right is what can I bring. Type hair spray
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie Thanks! It’s the same rules as other liquids
Off topic but I wanted to ask if you can make a video about travel insurance? I realize you probably aren’t an insurance agent but with all of your travel expertise I think you have some helpful advice 🙂. I know you can’t get into the weeds but anything would be helpful.
I would get it if traveling internationally. But check your insurance as it may suffice or have extensions. We have never gotten it.
Travel insurance is a complicated subject depending on where you live and where you are traveling to. Travel medical insurance is the very least you should consider. Imagine being sick or injured far from home. It isn't just about paying the bill, you may be too badly sick or injured to fly home on a commercial flight. Special medical transport may be required or an extended stay until you are well enough to go home. It can cover funeral arrangements and transport home if you die. Your country may have public health insurance that will cover some but not all travel medical expenses. Your work benefits may cover others. The credit card you use to pay for your trip may offer some assistance but purchasing a policy that covers you completely for a trip would be wise. An old fashioned travel agent, your employer, your bank or your home and auto insurance agent can help steer you to the right coverage providers. Insurance for lost or stolen luggage, trip cancellation, etc. is something you might be willing to take a risk with not having but being caught without medical coverage be devastating.

Hi, I have soooo many videos that would help you pack for Europe in a carry-on. I can only give one link per comment. Here is how to pack for a 10 day trip, but check the description box for more videos or I have a playlist called International Tips: bit.ly/10DayPackingTips
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie thank you very much for answering! I will be watching those to prepare! Have a great weekend!
I love your videos! Thank you for sharing your wisdom! Question: is there a weight limit for the carryon bag? My friend who travels a lot insists there is but I can’t find anything one way or the other on my airline’s website. (United). Thanks to anyone who can share a definitive answer!
Hi, for domestic travel there is no weight limit. Google her airline and carry-on requirements.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie thanks. I’m flying internationally, and I’ve looked all over United’s website and can only find dimension limits but not weight. I’ll keep looking. Thanks again.
@@tonjacolors That makes sense b/c for domestic we do not have to worry about weight. If she's traveling internationally, they sometimes list the weight. Sorry for the confusion.
We go from the Americas to Europe and United, Iberia and KLM have never weighed carry ons or personal items, but COPA around the Caribbean is ruthless! No more than 15 lbs! and, no....., you cannot repack. they just whisk it away and check it in. This delays getting out of the airport on arrival.
Hi! What do you think about using locks on your bags? Use them or no need if they will be inspected?
We have never used them even when our bags got checked.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie thank you 😊

Question! You probably don't get this much as a question but I'm traveling on delta next week to AZ and I'm bringing some of my dad's ashes so he can be laid to rest there. I'm freaking out about going threw TSA with them. Do you have any advice for this?
Yes, people have asked this. Just keep them in the box. You may want to tell the tsa officer that you have ashes. But you will be fine. I'm so sorry for your loss. Mine died of alzheimer's 6 years ago.
Hi Laurie erm what is a yetti for keeping your drink cold?
Hi it’s a name brand here. RTIC is another brand. Aluminum mug for hot or cold drinks
