XL 2 gallon ziploc bags, or any size. Insert clothing items in a ziploc, place the bag flat on a chair seat (I use a blanket chest) with the opening to one side, sit on the bag to remove the air then press the seal or slider. The bags remain flat, they dont catch on items in your bag, contents are visible, clothing doesn't wrinkle any more than it would in compression sac. Flatten the ziploc as much as you want, pancake flat or leave some air in the bag.

My mom taught me to divvy up undergarments and 1 outfit when we traveled together. E.g. some of my undies in her suitcase and some of hers in mine. Likelihood of airline losing the luggage for BOTH parties was low. You at least had a change of undies and 1 outfit to tide you over.

In that compression cube where you have a few undies and shirts, make sure you have a non bulky swimsuit and light coverup (can double as a nightie). In case you are going to a beach / pool destination, you don't want to miss out if your luggage is lost, especially if you are a hard to fit size and may not be able to find a suit in their shoppe quickly.

That is a great idea! I do not live close to an airport (as in, I'm about 6 hours' drive from the nearest one!), so I always book an airport hotel for the night before my trip, which also gives me parking for the duration of my trip and a shuttle to the airport the morning of my flight. I have a separate packing cube that just has the stuff I need for my hotel stay, so I don't end up undoing my great packing job for my trip and scurrying to repack everything the morning of my flight.

Best hack I’ve seen so far is instead of using packing cubes use thin fabric totes or packable backpacks instead. I used a packable backpack and an Aloha brand tote and it served to separate the clothes in the suitcase and then I had the extra light backpack and tote to use throughout the vacation. When returning home I’m not as stressed about checking in my luggage so I just checked it in but then had the extra bags to use for an additional carry on or personal item to carry souvenirs or extra clothing I bought.
Also never bring a nightgown. Bring an extra bathing suit coverup you can use as both.

I started packing extremely light On the clothing, especially when traveling to other countries. This way I will buy clothing there to blend in and not look like a tourist and the clothes I buy there are my souvenirs. I don't care that I'm wearing the same outfits over and over again because I'm the only one who sees them. I bring paper laundry soap and hand wash anything I need to. This saves so much room in my suitcase for extra purchases. Instead of packing cubes I'll use clear plastic bags. They don't take up as much room and I can see what's in them. I'll be going to Norway in Dec and packing snow boots. Your video gave me another idea. I'll stuff the inside of the boots with socks, undergarments and anything else I can squeeze in there to save room. Love your videos and packing tips!

  • @jenharvey3397
    @jenharvey3397 Рік тому +17

Great tips as always Laurie! I have purchased a couple of expensive shoe bags from Eagle Creek, and never ended up using them. Instead, I always end up using my cheapo 'dust cover' style drawstring single shoe bags - that way shoes can tuck in wherever there is space, and socks are always packed inside shoes (I swear by Tilley travel socks, they are costly but they last a long time if you only use them for travel, and they are guaranteed to dry overnight if you wash them in the hotel sink and then roll in a towel before hanging to dry.) I only pack solid bottoms, then I can match patterned tops with them all. Instead of using the dry cleaning bag for wet swimsuits, I pack my swimsuit in a dry bag. I use that dry bag (or a Scrubba wash bag) to hand wash clothing throughout my trip, and it's great for packing anything damp to go back home. One of the things that has made the most difference - thanks to you for teaching me this! - is to stop using my hanging everything-hygiene-makeup-and-first-aid-related L L Bean organizer (although it's great and I still use it for road travel when luggage is not restricted) and use small pouches for my toiletries and first aid and emergency supplies instead. Since I have become a serious Vera Bradley addict (especially since I have acquired a friend who works there and she lets me use her staff discount!), it is always easy to find plenty of fun pouches that will fit into the weirdest shaped corners of space. I normally do pack my shoes in the corners, so thank you for this new tip you taught me today! The idea about using ziplocs is a good one, here is an alternative: I always keep a "travel kitchen" in a Stasher bag in my personal item. This has a collapsible Sea to Summit travel mug, a collapsible lidded mug, an electric immersion coil to boil water in hotel rooms, collapsible knife, fork, spoon, and chopsticks, a cut down pack towel to use as a napkin and to wash dishes, and a small military can opener. I use the Stasher bag throughout my vaycay to bring leftovers back to the hotel room (it can keep them fresh in the fridge, and can also be put in the microwave or a pan of boiling water to reheat), good for food prep or marinating, pack a picnic sandwich or snacks for the day, and can also be used as a heat pad or ice pack in case of injury or sore muscles.

Laurie, your tips are so helpful. I used several of them when doing carry-on only for the first time. I was surprised, however, when boarding a British Airways, a380, in which I was seated upstairs. Because of the shape of the plane, the overhead bins on the window side, are smaller and not as deep, and will not fit a 22 inch carry-on no matter how it’s turned. It was very frustrating, because there is already such a lack of available overhead bins. Hi Laurie, Came across your UA-cam Channel by accident. Love it! You have such great info, and seem like you are truly a fun & down to earth person. We are going overseas this summer for the first time and are very excited. Plan is to go strictly carry on. We will be flying Premium Economy (bigger seats & fewer in it’s own cabin area behind Business Class), never flown any thing but regular economy before, so a tad concerned about personal item and space under seat due to these seats having a fold down foot rest, any recommendations on how to maximize the size of our personal item in this situation … not sure anything too rigid will fit. Thanks.

Great tips! It seems that after every vacation, I have a couple of things that were never used. As I unpack, I try to determine why I didn’t use that particular piece. It’s usually an “in case” piece. Traveling light this year means every piece has to have a function. I have to be smart about the planned activities and leave those in case pieces home.

I do that, too. I keep my packing lists on my computer (started doing it in 2015), then, if there's anything I brought but didn't use - or that I forgot and ended up needing - I add that to the end of the list and the reason why, so that I have it for reference in the future. If I need to make a separate one for packing on the way back (generally only happens at Christmas, since that's the only time I drive, so the only time I can take a significant additional amount back with me - the rest of the time, I fly), I can just copy-paste and add whatever I need to, instead of having to write up the entire list again. It also allows me to combine lists to get ideas of what to bring for future trips (did that for both of the summer trips I'm taking this year) based on location, activities expected, and time of year.

One thing I do is look for items that do multiple things. A long knit sweater is also a bathrobe and cover-up. I definitely do that double-duty items too, including the rubber/plastic slides (are they Crocs 'dress' shoes, by any chance? That's what I use for travel.) In cooler weather I don't pack PJs, I pack thin silky patterned long undies. They take up less room than pajamas and can add an extra layer if the weather is cold. I bring only one lightweight cross body purse for the whole trip, regardless of activity (a Kipling metallic 'Alvar' flat zip is my bag of choice - it has 5 zippered pockets, carries a lot relative to its tiny footprint (I call it my Tardis bag!), and the fabric is rugged enough to stand up to anything, while the metallic finish gives it some class. If I'm going to be doing some long walks/hikes, I also pack a very small sling bag (one of my smaller reactive (waterproof) Vera Bradley slings). Instead of just letting them take up room in my case, I use them as packing cubes. My hiking outfit goes in the sling bag, along with a small first aid and foot care kit, and jewelry and small accessories such as scarves go in my zippered purse.

When I’m on the beach and those bags of ice melt, then I pour them into my water bottle. Leaving 2 weeks from tomorrow for a 2-week trip - only bringing my backpack because everything I need that won't be at my destination easily fits into it (I keep an extra set of medical equipment, full set of full size toiletries, and a small amount of clothing at my parents' house, so all I really need, other than wallet, keys, etc., is my computer, things to do while traveling, a skirt for church, the replacement brake parts for my wheelchair (in case they take forever to get the part to me - that way, they still have to send me the part but I won't be stuck without a working brake), a couple snacks, some electrolyte mix, and the very few things I would need if I got stuck overnight on a layover (it has happened before so it could always happen again)); if I need more clothes than that (like a raincoat), I'll just borrow from my mom. Currently trying to decide whether to bring sneakers as well, in addition to sandals (which work for everything from hosing down the driveway to attending a wedding), or just the sandals - if I brought the sneakers, I'd wear those on the plane and pack the sandals (I have drawstring bags that each fit one sandal perfectly - my wool dryer balls came in them), since the sandals take up far less room, but I don't plan to do a ton of walking or sightseeing, so, theoretically, the sandals should be plenty; I've gotten away with just sandals for that same reason on my previous 2 summer trips, so I'm leaning toward it for this time, too.
I've been working on my packing list for this trip for literally months (since mid-February) - I keep my packing lists on my computer, so I basically combined a bunch of them so that I would have all the ideas in one place, then whittled it down to what I was actually going to need. The one for camp in July is a lot more extensive, though, because it has to be - I've been working on that one since February as well, and I'm eternally grateful that I have (I will be bringing a suitcase for that trip, probably my 19", but, with me having to pack my bugle in my suitcase, it might have to be my 22" (okay, so it's technically 22.5"x14.75"x9.75" overall dimensions, but that's close enough that it will still fit just fine in the overhead of a regular (non-regional) United jet as long as I don't stuff it past its "empty dimensions") - if I do use my 22", I'll have to figure out a different luggage strap, because the one I have barely fits my 19" (that one's something like 19"x12.5"x7.5" - the wheels aren't embedded at all, so I don't include their additional height because my luggage strap doesn't have to go around the wheels; that suitcase has taken such a beating, it's almost impossible to believe that it hasn't worn out yet)).

For next month, definitely leaning toward only the sandals, and I will be bringing both wheelie bars this time, since I only brought one last month, but the backpack was heavy enough that one wheelie bar still wasn't enough to keep the chair from flipping backwards when I got out of it (since there wasn't a suitcase on the front to balance it out) - two should definitely be enough.

Even though the handle is broader than most suitcases, I use a bag that fits over the handles. I do have some medical stuff that would not do well in baggage hold and I would not check this lightweight bag. Also, if I ever check a bag, I put FRAGILE stickers all over the bag and it has not gotten crushed. I brought two bottles of Vodka back from Russia unbroken in 2019 which inside my checked luggage this way.

We don't take swimsuits, because we are busy sight seeing. Make sure everything is color coordinated and you're good to go. Have fun!

I was thinking that the socks in a sock could also fit inside of a shoe or sandal. Also, a question. I am using a cane now for walking any distance because of a bad knee. Is it any problem to put that up in the overhead without it counting as my carryon? Thanks so much!

I used a cane at one time and they had me check it with the stewards once I sat. But once I flew, and some had their pair of crutches put in the overhead. What a pain for so many of us trying to put our bags up there!

Laurie I have a quick question for you. We are down to the wire now on our trip to Abu Dhabi. The date was pushed to next week. My son wants me to cook every once in a while and has asked me to bring my seasonings. May I bring them tightly closed on a ziplock ? Some will be unopened.

Invest in Merino wool clothing, socks, and underwear to save on weight and space (for souvenirs)as you can reuse them multiple times without washing for a time and you can mix and match

I buy the blister packs, it cost more, but takes up much less room, and I only need a few.

Laurie, what does this bag weigh fully loaded as in Australia we can only take on board as carry on - 7kg or 15.43lbs, which is not that much really and is very easy to overload. We are often weighed once thru and waiting to board. I got caught once with 10kg in a very small roll on - $60Aus later…….. Now I carry scales. It is often cheaper to send back any excess by post within Australia. 5kg = $20.
