I have a 5.3 LS1 truck engine in my 2002 Avalanche. It has the D580 coils OEM stock. These coils still run but the laminated cores of coils are very rusted because they are exposed instead of being totally encased in plastic like other coils. So I wanted to replace them with an upgrade.
My engine has a Whipple supercharger system, ported heads, and a cam with .05" more lift than stock but otherwise mild duration/overlap and stock idle. SO, I want the ignition to be enhanced over stock if possible.
MSD makes a "Pro Power" LS coil with a built in capacitive discharge feature. Their PN 828683 (set of 8) fits the stock harness plugs of my engine, but I could see from the pictures that they will not fit the stock mounting bracket because the mounting ears are 90* from where the OEM mounting ears are located. The aftermarket mounting brackets I was able to find don't look like they are going to be a direct fit either.
I had to talk to MSD tech people for some time to get clear answers. They assured me that the 828683 coils were electrically compatible with my application, and that information indeed did turn out to be correct. But they could not give me an answer as to what mounting brackets will fit the coil.
All the aftermarket bracket listings I could find just give you a picture to look at, with no definitive listing of what coils will fit the bracket. They just expect you to figure it out by looking at pictures, then buy the thing and probably realize it won't work without modification.
I want brackets that will mount the coils with the spark wire terminal snout pointing straight down directly over each spark plug ... is that too much to ask?
All of the aftermarket brackets looked like they are basically universal and will mount the coils on a 45* angle, and I do not want this.
So I decided to modify my OEM brackets to fit the MSD coils. This required some cutting and welding. The square opening for the body of the coil had to be enlarged, and I welded on threaded studs to match the coil mounting holes. The section of the bracket that secures the large harness feeding the engine on the left side had to be cut off, re-positioned, and extended about an inch higher.
So as it turned out the coils are mounted in the position where I want them, and as a bonus the spark wire snouts extend a little lower, which makes the spark wires fit perfectly. That was another problem, the spark wires that MSD and every other mfr tells you are correct for your very common truck engine application do not fit well because they are a half inch too short. MSD tells you to bend the terminals to make them reach. I already did this and the damned wires just barely reach and are taught enough to play a tune on them. They just flatly REFUSE to give you a lousy half inch more of wire to work with.
Then they also refuse to make a bracket that will correctly fit and mount the coils they sell to fit your very common truck engine. However, they do sell universal brackets that will mount them on an angle and may require longer wires.
Another thing they don't tell you until after you buy the coils is there's a possibility of a low current fault due to the current demand of the capacitive discharge feature. They do make and sell a harness adapter that uses a relay to create a direct B+ circuit to your OEM harness that will solve this issue. They explain this in the instruction sheet with the coils. So I ordered that too, an additional order and more waiting time. There is no mention of any recommendation for this harness adapter on the MSD website listing for the coils, and no mention of it from their tech people.
I had to modify it because the wiring is configured to put the relay somewhere on the engine, and I wanted the relay inside the under hood fuse box.
So anyway the coils seem to be running well on my engine now, although I haven't driven the truck just yet because it needs more work.

Once the wiring harness is connected to the engine how do you connect it to the ignition switch and everything else? I'm asking because its my first time doing this swap.

Hello Again Chris. I went to start my dad's 1967 Olds Cutlass with 4.8LS (Engine from 2003 Chevy Silverado) Conversion and smelled fuel, I luckily had the exhaust and headers separated.
I saw fuel spraying out of the passenger side of the header. I Swapped injectors for Cylinders #4 & #6 after smelling fuel on the plugs.
I restarted the engine and the fuel still leaked unburned raw fuel.
Any Ideas on how I should fix?

U didn't say where the knock sensors are. On the early LS engines gm had a problem with them filling up with water because of there location under the plenum and thus is the reason for the foam type end caps at each end of the plenum. The later models had a boot to cover the holes. It's my opinion that GM has the best set up to date. Also water pump selection is crucial when putting the LS engine in an S-10 or older vehicle

Hello Chris. The color combinations on my coils pack (5.3L from a 2000 tahoe) have different colors than mentioned here. Mine has yellows, lime green, two blues, two pinks. Could you provide alternative color sequences? Thank you

Do you guys also program the Transmission? we are using a Column Shift from CPP here in California it has the Neutral Safety switch on the Column. We are doing the 2006 Chevy Tahoe Boneyard Edition HAHA..5.3 Engine with 4l60E Transmission into our 1962 Chevy C20 Converted to 1/2 Ton. Also we are in Riverside CA so can we get everything just driving out to your place over in Rancho CUC?
We were going to just install the Engine/ Trans to the running gear then hook up the exhaust Etc then trailer it over So someone else can do the TPI Wiring. We just Purchased a new Wiring Main harness from American Auto-wire Highway 22 Series Kit so we will do that install as we have done that on our other Rods. Now that I watched the Video I sort of think I might be able to handle this with a little...Or A Lot of help along the way. This engine has the Cable drive throttle body so no electric pedal or anything we are leaving everything stock no turbo no nothing. I got the Gas Tank from Tanks Inc with the in Tank Fuel injection and I swapped out the stock fuel rails and bought the same reman Injectors the 2006 Tahoe came with so we dont have to use GM Clips and adapter hose fittings just regular AN Fittings throughout so that is already sorted out and on the truck. We are also going to use the Fan Clutch/Fan Blade Set up for our truck also Late Model GM Truck stuff that goes on the Stock LS Engine/Truck Style also Stock Coil Packs and the stock brain is still sitting on top of the engine NOT That we plan on using it TOO BULKY! we just left it on like we got it from the bone yard just in case any of that stuff needs to be RE Used I did post up video of the thing we are working on right now.

Will I see any benefit from replacing my factory coil with performance multi spark units like MSD sells? 2000 WS6 LS1. 30K miles, it already has long tube headers, shorty cats, aftermarket Y pipe, Corsa catback exhaust, 85 mm MAF, high flow air filter nd a larger air box lid ( factory resonator is also removed). How much if any tuning would be required if I replace the factory intake manifold for a larger one and mount a 92 MM throttle body to it ( it has the attached throttle cable) What kind of power gain should I expect to see for all this work ?

I have a question for you guys or anyone on UA-cam if they can answer for me. I'm about to purchase an CBM LS1 and I have no idea which transmission would pair with this engine. Most LS swaps in RX8s are used from the 2002 Corvette. So would the 2002 transmission fit the CBM LS1? I am unsure if CBM is a custom built motor or used motor.

    • @dickjones6159
      @dickjones6159 6 років тому

Hey Jimmy CBM stands for custom built motors, but they still use automotive engines as a base. Your LS1 will use any GM V8 automatic from about 98 and up. For a manual trans any T- 56 6 speed, or a late model 5 speed from any LS. Manual transmissions that are universal and made by Tremec are the TKO 5 speeds. They have a TKO 500 and 600. the only difference between the two are the first and final gear ratios. Both will handle a good amount or power and torque. They are around $2400.00 with no bellhousing or shifter. I have personally bough many from Liberty Gear. They are hands down the worlds best. They are located in Harrison Township Mi. and also have a web site you can get more info from. Craig had at one time a lot of new old stock Tremec transmissions from Australia that will bolt right up to a LS series engine.I would send them an email and look into that as an option. Good luck with the ride.

O2 sensor [b4 the CAT] tipically call as Air Fuel Ratio sensor measurs , how much left over oxygen [O2] in the exhaust gases. O2 sensor never measure the Air Fuel Ratio. Air Fuel ratio calcualted base on the O2 sensor readings. [Leftover O2]
