    After listening to about 10 other piano versions, this is by far my favorite. The energy and drama you put into this really makes it feel as epic as Kefka is. Amazing job, hope there will be more soon.
    EDIT: I listened to it like 20x now and am whistling it all day ... what did you do to me D:

    • @NicholasPetris
      @NicholasPetris  8 років тому +1

      Haha, thanks a lot for your kind comment !! I always try my best to channel the most relevant emotion to the character/game, so I'm glad it came through ! I think video games generally offer some reality or universal truth to us, there's a real essence that can be felt, which is extremely relevant/descriptive/insightful regarding our lives and the world we live in. The all-engulfing nothingness of Kefka is a real force me must fight, and I think Nobuo obviously did an excellent job with capturing that sentiment.
      I LOL at your edit. Stay strong and enthusiastic against the darkness, my brethren !! :D Remember, everything is cycles(repetition...). We are all like little planets/galaxies...

    • @ProjectStickman
      @ProjectStickman 8 років тому +2

      Oh also, I actually started playing Piano myself a few months ago, but your level of play is only something I can dream of for years. All I can play properly so far is To Zanerkand, oh well. And tips?

    • @NicholasPetris
      @NicholasPetris  8 років тому +1

      I think that becoming familiar with scales is pretty helpful, especially when you start thinking in terms of scale degrees so that you can learn about and understand music theory, which makes it easier to understand what exactly you're playing rather than just thinking about a bunch of note names. Recognizing the I and V chords would be a good place to start in terms of what you might try practicing now. Analyzing "To Zanarkand" entirely would probably not be that difficult.
      Always try to be mindful of your posture, make sure to keep breathing... Practice slowly and in control, try not to play through the same mistakes over and over (they won't resolve themselves and will be harder to break out of the more you play them)... Make sure you can keep the beat steady so use a metronome for at least occasional practice... Umm, if you have any questions feel free to ask ! There are plenty of things that could be said. Best of luck !!!

    • @ProjectStickman
      @ProjectStickman 8 років тому +1

      Nicholas Petris My problem with scales is the 2 "gaps" where the isn't a black key, memorizing where it is in what specific key is incredibly hard for me. I guess it's just a matter of practice, but I'm really not a big fan of just memorizing things, I'd rather want to understand them,

    • @NicholasPetris
      @NicholasPetris  8 років тому +1

      There is indeed a logical way to grasp them !! I'd recommend starting with the C major scale. Sing with it, with the scale degrees (1 2 3 4 5 6 7 1[or8]). Become intimately familiar with the sound. From this scale, we now either add a sharp or a flat. A sharp will transpose us up a fifth to G major, and a flat will bring us down to F major. The sharp we add creates the new leading tone, scale degree 7, while the flat destroys our old leading tone. In relation to the tonic (scale degree one), the intervals to the other scale degrees will be the same for all the major scales (same sound relationship) : so you have the 1, +2 (major 2nd), +3 (major 3rd), P4 (perfect 4th), P5 (perfect 5th), +6 (major 6th), +7 (major 7th). I find it easier to think of things this way rather than primarily focusing on the [tone-tone-semitone etc] formula.
      C major -> G major (added F#) -> D major (added C#) -> A major (added G#) -> E major (added D#) -> B major (added A#) ...
      I'd recommend starting with those since the flats start becoming just a little trickier with regards to fingering. The sharps keep C major fingering until B major, where the left hand uses 4 at the bottom.
      Oh, I also wanted to give you another thought with regards to learning/practicing: try to think of the ultimate musical result you will aim for with every note/phrase, and let the musical Truth be your guide of what is physically required. Trying to learn something "neutral" and trying to add in dynamics/musicality later makes for a lot more work. Always think musically; sometimes this will call for something "neutral" but generally if something is void of musicality it's never worth to practice it that way. Remember, the more we repeat something, the more it will become ingrained, so make sure to always try doing your best. "Autopilot" is the absolutely enemy, and not just in music, in my opinion. Cheers, my friend ~~

      What you played was probably from the "Piano Collections", which I still find quite enjoyable and interesting as a sort of complimentary take on the music from the game ! This "Piano Opera" version is obviously a much more "direct" arrangement/approach, which for now is more of what I'm after. This piece wasn't the toughest, but it did take me a few days of recording attempts to get to this! Thanks a lot for your kind words ! :)

      @@NicholasPetris I agree with you that the young man did a good job playing the piece and that best is very subjective. Bravo, I come back often to listen to this piece because of that and just find your rendition overly enjoyable. Thank you!

    • @NicholasPetris
      @NicholasPetris  4 роки тому +4

      Thanks! Yeah, the majority of my videos took many takes, and in many cases I couldn't even succeed on my first day of recording attempts. I don't remember for sure if this one took several days or how many attempts specifically, but if I recall correctly it was on the less tricky, less unwieldy side, so I think I wrapped it up quicker than most others.
      Once I get back to working on music, which should hopefully be soon enough, I'll be sure to make note of whether I managed to get an acceptable recording on my first take, which ideally is the goal, but for whatever reasons, it's pretty unlikely. Proper preparation and practice and the right mental state or paradigm seem to be the keys.

      Ryan Patterson Just keep practicing and you'll make it eventually. You might need many hours of practice, but don't let that discourage you. The third page of this arrangement was the hardest for me; I'd focus on the rest of it, hands separately, with accurate dynamic control, slowly, some metronome work, until it's comfortable enough to put the hands together. Any things or sections in particular that are troubling you ?
      Those octaves with some trills atop are challenging, so drop the lower note until fingers 4 and 5 are capable of handling the musical demands, for example. Cheers and best of luck!

      I practise an hour or less each day on this piece. It's the syncopation that is messing me up throughout the piece, like when the piece has the left hand play the off beats of the main theme when it increased to 1/8 notes it gets akward. I also need to work on the stocatto of the piece more which comes with practising with the metronome.
