Trying the council tool splitting wedge does it work? (Surprising results)

  • As the old saying goes “theres more then one way to skin a cat”. And I figure I would try something a little new which is the council tool 5lb splitting wedge. These big green knotty pieces of firewood can be abit awkward to handle at times on my little splitter. So I figure I give it a go on splitting them into smaller pieces with the wedge to make it a little easier and little bit of fun exercise.

Speaking from years of experience using iron wedges for splitting logs (not just for firewood), two things: If you keep working with the wedge in the center, you will eventually find a log that lets you bury the wedge but refuses to split - and then your wedge is thoroughly stuck and you'll have a time getting it out again. Second thing, the top of the wedge will mushroom over time, unless you just don't use it ;) And when it does, you'll want to take a file to it, or a grinder, because the edges of that flare around the top can and do break off and come flying with potentially painful results.

Like 13…yes, fill up that Wood Shed! I’m using a Yardworks Electric Splitter. You are getting quite a work-out with that tool and method!

My 1st time seeing your channel. Good content! I'm a wedge and sledge guy as well on big rounds. The Counsil Tool wedge seems to be holding up well. I typically use an Estwing Super Splitter or an Ochsenkopf aluminum spiral wedge. I just split a couple of face cords of White Ash which popped nicely, and a face cord of Green Ash that was a spiral growth tree which was miserable to work with. Keep up the good work!!

@@nailpounder3013 thank you so much! I was debating on getting the eastwing but settled on the council wedge seems to be doing good so far!

I have 2 of those, I never use themes to much time consuming, I use a 7 Tone electric splitter or an heavy ax and sometimes if they have though knots I help with chainsaw.

Great video Allan. We will have to build some rails for both of the kinetic splitters.
