My father is in an Alzheimer’s ward in a nursing home, going steadily downhill to the point where he stopped speaking. When his home was locked down due to Covid he was no longer given “treats” by my sisters, they were no longer able to bring him cases of Pepsi and his favourite chocolates. Within a few months he started talking again as well as playing music. When I suggested that the diet change was having an effect on his disease I was dismissed. I live in another province and have no control over his diet, I am so frustrated. My mother died of Lewy Body Dementia so this is a very important topic for me. I eat Ketovore and am enjoying much improved cognitive function. Keep educating, you are saving lives!

Am watching my mother gradually dying from alz. My step dad refuses to learn anything about diet changes for her. The nursing home feeds her all carbs with a side of protein. And the protien is usually a shake. Frustrating.

I have a friend in her 70’s, beef, water, salt. She turned around her memory to normal range for her age within about 9 months. I think strict carnivore is the way to go.

  • @evvie01
    @evvie01 2 роки тому +47

Yup, the only thing that helped my stepdad keep as close to normal as he did was his diet change and my ability to walk him back to the present with pictures. I think listening to his stories, understanding where he might be (in time) at the time, I didn't fight him, or try to convince him or argue, or roll my eyes or make him feel out of control, or a burden. I always let him believe he was taking care of me, helping me, or teaching me.

@@priskamessie5843she is a little bit better but I think it will take a long time. She had an eye exam 3 months ago and they said she is almost blind. I tested her at home with 1-1/2” letters and I had to hold them 10” from her face for her to read them and after putting her in a homemade hyperbaric chamber with oxygen she can now read them at 4’ away. She still can’t seem to read so I think it’s the dementia and I’m hoping over time her carnivore diet helps and maybe she’ll be able to read again. We’ll see

My father was diagnosed with Alzheimer's (as in - it doesn't appear to be vascular or lewy bodies) at 90 yrs old in 2010. He was started on Cholinesterase inhibitors and went from being totally bewildered at being asked to sign a form, to being able to write, if not his signature, then his name. So it really helped in the early days.
2 years later my mother died and I moved in to look after him. During the next year I read about paleo and decided to try removing wheat from his diet. Luckily he wasn't really aware of what he could be eating and just accepted what he was given. (And he had removed white flour years before to help with his arthritis, so he would probably have agreed.) Within a week or so, we went from his just looking at my finger when I was pointing at something, to him listening to me and looking at what I was commenting on and responding without me even pointing. It was huge. He even got to the stage where he asked what was wrong with him and he'd never done that before. However he didn't have spare fat or strong teeth and I didn't feel I could take away all carbs (potato and rice) and didn't know as much then (2013) so over the next year he slowly deteriorated again. For that year, I cooked in coconut oil, we had bacon and eggs for breakfast, I gave him MCT oil and B12 supplements. I think this gave him another 12 - 18 months in his own home.
Eventually in 2014 he went into a Royal British Legion (veterans charity) specialist dementia home and given his age and lack of comprehension we told them to feed him whatever he'd eat. He had clearly developed a sweet tooth that he'd not had, or not indulged before. He died in December 2015 at 95, from pneumonia, but really because he had a cold and then didn't really want to eat or drink and no longer understood why he would need to. We eventually took him off the Alzheimer's medication because it seemed to make him active without helping him to understand and it caused some problems in the care home environment.
I wish I had known more and done more, but I've learned so much in the last 5 years and, in the end, he was a good age at 95 and only on the Alzheimer's medication. He was still very mobile, despite 2 hip replacements and even climbed over the garden fence at the care home at one point to 'explore', so I'm sure without the Alzheimer's he would have made it to 100 this year.

I totally understand the "if only I knew then what I know now"
Mom in law ended up assperating at a daycare. She lived at home with my brother in law. He was her sole caregiver.
Her doctor gave written orders that someone was to stay with her while she ate. She was found in the day room unconscious and blue. They removed what was told to me by one of the nurses what looked like an entire meal of mac and cheese 🤬
We all spent the next 6 months in sheer hell. She was put on a respirator. Had a DNR and one "rehab" left her alone after turning off the resperator and found her on the floor blue and gave her cpr.

I would like to offer some suggestions for people with elderly parents who cannot eat meat die to dental issues.
Get some good bone broth and cook up a chuck roast (cubed) ....even cook the cubed roast in bone broth. Then, get some grass fed butter, and blend it all together .....meat, bone nroth, and butter.... till you have a thick soup or even runny mashed potato consistency. Season it at least with Redmond's salt ...maybe garlic and paprika.
They can eat this and it is very nutrient dense. I did this to heal my digestive issues while on carnivore/ketovore. I couldn't eat anything else. Now, I use this after fasts.
Another thing that blends well into bone broth is boiled eggs. But it changes the taste, so start with one and see.
    I hope this helps someone!❤

I have Huntingtons disease. The testing is genetic test. I chose to wait until symptomatic. I was 39 in 2004 when I tested and could not work in a normal work environment. I now realize that my symptoms were back 2000 when I was MISDIAGNOSED with bi-polar and put on a slew of meds, etc. In 2012 I woke up to BIG FOOD/BIG PHARMA. Went off everything except 10mg melatonin. My symptoms improved GREATLY. I'm doing ketovore, and I no longer feel the need to "rest my brain ". I will continue and I am visiting my friend with Parkinson in 2 months to help her

I became type 1 diabetic at 50 and a friend turned me on to the Zone way of eating by Dr Barry Sears when I was about 3yrs into the diabetes. My glucose levels and insulin amounts declined in 3 days. The Zone was the first diet to deal with refined carbohydrates and diabetes and the healthiest ratio of fats and protein , which DrSears based on the ratio found in mothers milk. I’ve been eating. this way for 25;yrs and have avoided neuropathy so far. It was the pioneer keto type diet. I applaud your efforts . This inclusion of Amy is great.

I know this is an old video. Almost 2 years. I am glad I came across this. I have already bought your book, the Lies my Dr Told Me. I cut out all sugar about 2 weeks ago, don't miss it. Cut out more and more carbs each day. It took about a week and I'm like 98% carnivore. The last 2% being my coffee and what I put in it. I made changes to that to, but not enough. Honestly, I'll probably just stop coffee, because without stuff in it, coffee is bitter and gross. lol. Either way, this video!! I have a Grandmother on my Paternal side who passed from Alz, and my mother passed last year and she was diagnosed with Alz (Pneumonia is what her cause of death was). However, that pneumonia was caused by her Alz and her brain being incapable of doing what was best for herself. Anyway, my risk is super high. The funny thing, what started me down this path was my last Dr appointment. Dr read me the riot act about my Cholesterol levels (I've watched a ton of your videos on this topic already). I was doing what she told me too and my cholesterol was worse and worse with each blood work. I know you are not shocked. She said that the only way I would get my blood work looking as lovely as hers is by being a vegan. Every time I look at her, I think she is not as healthy as she thinks. She's overweight, bigger than me. How can she be healthy on vegan and be so overweight. Anyway, it pissed me off. So, ya, I'm making diet changes, but not what she wants. I'm feeling great on a Carnivore diet. I'm not hungry all the time. I eat two times a day now. I'm down 7 pounds in two weeks since I started and just cut out sugar. This video has been super helpful!!

Also have a sister 89 with Alzheimers, and one sister with dementia. I lived much different than all of them, ate different types of food and I have been very active, at 74 I as of yet have no signs of either Alzheimers nor Dementia. I have always been a firm believer your diet plays a big role in either/or. I have MS and I do have brain farts from my MS. Jessie from Arkansas

It is so painful to lose the one you love twice. I also have an underlying fear that I will get this disease as I age. I am trying to be informed by staying up on current information, to help promote a more healthy lifestyle. I remind myself that I am not my parents or grandparents, lifestyle also plays a vital part in avoiding dementia. So up here in Edmonds Washington I will be embracing the lifestyle that keeps my brain and body healthy.

I lost my great aunt to the disease last year, and my grand father on the other side has it too. Thanks for this video. I am a care giver to my mother who now has dementia. I am taking her to my home today to best look after her. I will certainly pay more attention to our diet - lower carbs for sure. I will share with her my family members. Diabetes runs in the family. My mom does not have it but it makes a certain sense that a type 3 diabetes could be at play.

I really like this woman. At about 45:00 she describes her book which sounds like a GREAT primer for making Keto accessible. I'm one of the people who has been trying to do Keto for 2 years, have consumed SO MANY videos books and articles that I'm just confused! No serious health issues so I've settled into what sounds like her lifestyle that is not extreme or 100% strict adherence to any particular diet plan but sticking with LCHF all fresh whole foods.

My personal experience with my brother who had vascular dementia is he was addicted to sugar. The cholesterol and high bp medicine they were giving him didn't help. Ironically the cholesterol medication side effects was it cause dementia, talk about crazy. I begged my uncle to STOP taking him shopping and buying cookies, ice cream, sodas and fast food. Sadly he just said he couldn't stop him from putting it in the grocery cart. I wasn't his POA but I decided to take two weeks off work and cook real food. I replaced margarine with butter and pure organic coconut oil. Took him off his meds and replaced it with high quality multivitamin and minerals and twice the amount of B complex vitamin recomended on the bottle, extra B12, magnesium tauratrate, folate, and not folic acid because we have the mthfr gene mutation. 5k D3, extra B3, digestive enzymes maybe a couple of other things I may have forgotten. By the second week he went from being incoherent to telling me "you know I don't want to keep taking all those vitamins." I asked why not and he said I just don't. I proved to myself that most if not all of his symptoms were from a nutrition deficiency. Driving to and from his house took two hours a day and trying to get him to drink water was almost impossible. At the end of the two weeks he went back to eating junk food and taking his poison aka medicine and within two months he had a stroke and went into a nursing home. When all the nursing homes were closed to family and friends because of covid he was neglected so badly that death came as a blessing 😢

I doubt I'll ever go completely off this diet because it is so very healthy. Should I quit these now or wait until I get to my desired weight of 157 lbs.

I have removed as many sweets from my Mom's diet as much as possible. She really craves it. I was told it was a combination of the aging of the taste buds and the alzheimer's effect on the taste part of the brain. We have found that exogenous ketones has really helped to get fuel to blocked parts of the brain. It helped her mood so she isn't combative. She has some clarity from time to time where she realizes what she has lost, and then she sits and crys. She never forgets that she loves Dad even though sometimes she doesn't remember his name, sometimes thinks he is her boyfriend, and sometimes forgets that Dad passed in 2002 and will wait for him to come home. Fortunately she has always been a bacon and eggs, fried chicken, country girl. Monkfruit is another help, so she isn't completely devoid of sweets but the sweets are less harmful

My grandpa ate raw honey with every meal, and sometimes poured all over his food and would say "put a little honey on it. Honey makes everything better!" We had a small restaurant that he ate at for lunch daily and he had his own table there with a bottle of honey on it. He and grandma always had honey on their table. His Alzheimer's diagnosis my family attributed to chemicals sprayed on cattle for ticks and he didn't use PPE. I actually thought might have been due to undiagnosed Lyme's Disease bc twice he got sick and was hospitalized and put on high powered antibiotics and both times the fog lifted and he went from blankly staring into space to holding conversations and was his own self. Like he was back! A miracle from God. And then as his condition improved and he went home, he was back in the fog and no longer present, again. He died in October of 97 and hadn't been able to hold his own mouth shut for several months. Last thing to go was being able to eat. He was NEVER combative or used hateful ugly words. His personality didn't change like we usually see with Alzheimer's, which is why we always thought something else.?? I now have two aunts diagnosed with Alzheimer's. Love them so much. So sad. Wish I could help them.
