The Science of Preventing (and Reversing) Dementia

  • For so long, we’ve been told that memory loss and dementia are just a normal part of aging. Though we now know it doesn’t have to be that way, and that there are many measures we can proactively take to avoid cognitive decline with aging, there are still 6 million people in the US who have Alzheimer’s or pre-Alzheimer’s and that number is expected to rise to 15 million by 2060. But emerging research is helping us look at new ways to treat and even prevent devastating diseases like this, giving people a newfound sense of hope. Today’s guest on The Doctor’s Farmacy, Dr. Marwan Sabbagh, has spent the majority of his life pioneering this field. From the age of 8, he knew he wanted to be a doctor, and just ten years later at 18, he began researching Alzheimer’s.
Dr. Sabbagh is a board-certified neurologist and considered one of the leading experts in Alzheimer’s and dementia. He is on the editorial board for the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease and BMC Neurology and is now editor in chief of Neurology and Therapy and is the author of The Alzheimer’s Answer: Reduce Your Risk and Keep Your Brain Healthy, and The Alzheimer’s Prevention Cookbook: 100 Recipes to Boost Brain Health. Dr. Sabbagh’s latest book, Fighting for My Life: How to Thrive in the Shadow of Alzheimer’s, was just released.

Great discussion. I used to farm: calves, sheep, horses - the veterinary surgeon’s first action was to question/examine the CAUSE. I could never understand why doctors didn’t do the same. The furthest they would go would be ask who might have spread such and such an infection. Rosemary aged 75

I dont know what's going on, alzheimers and dementia are the worse diseases, I'm sad to say mostly all of my friends' grandparents and some of parents all have some sort of dementia. My college friends, colleagues at work ,pple from the community all have stories that someone in thier families have dementia as much as today. They are very hard to take care of and you never want to give up on them because they are a family member and you have deep love for them. However when I was a kid you would never hear of family friends who have dementia, what going on , what is new in our environment that so many pple have this disease .

I find interesting is that if you take these expensive tests to find out you have Alzheimer's or even just a cognitive test and they say yes you are having Alzheimer's symptoms, then what? Then you go on a Mediterranean diet and start playing lots of puzzles, reading more, but couldn't you've just done all that instead of getting all the tests? Because you pretty much know when you're coming into Alzheimer's with your family members letting you know of your memory loss so just take the only measures medicine has so far is the Mediterranean diet. I've heard any medicines they might give you they don't really help that much anyway

This allows the person time to ask themselves if they really want to know. It’s an electro i signature for each gene.

It's well said, treat for achieving health, not to clear diseases. And first thing can be brought into today's system is use common sense of health care providers, communicating with the patient/customer for relevant info they can provide which can give an insight. But we are so eagerly awaiting the battery of tests n reports, artificial intelligence only is used more. This type of an approach not only costs an astronomical expense in tests n treatment but simple important n obvious signs n symptoms are overlooked for want of that B 12, B6, Iron, Calcium etc in thr serum. Initial years of medical education is concentrated on signs n symptoms of those deficiencies

By the time you are pre-symptomatic the damage is already done. It's like pre-diabetes. You are already insulin resistant with beta cell fatigue.

Thank you Dr. Hyman for the great work... it is very inspiring and since I went the functional medicine route because of you, my health has improved significantly.
I was wondering if functional medicine has any path for people with kidney chronic conditions. My dad has poly-cystic kidney stage 4 and I’m hoping to find help through functional medicine.

You can drink organic grass fed full fat since the healthy fat is good for you, but most adults don't really need milk. Lifeway kefir from whole milk with psyllium is what we find works best for establishing a healthy gut.

So why have you not read Dr Dale Bredesen's book before the interview? Published in 2017, it describes all the interventions mentioned. Title, The End of Alzheimer's.

It's good that there have been parallel studies over the decades that have all confirmed the effect of lifestyle on degenerative disease, including dementia, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, etc. Dr. Dean Ornish is yet another doctor who used the same lifestyle interventions for reversal of cardiovascular disease for 40 years, and noticed that patients' other degenerative diseases were also affected. He's now doing a study of impact on Alz. Disease. A good Ornish video on lifestyle healing: ua-cam.com/video/e6op2laLH8U/v-deo.html
