I just did this procedure yesterday. There is NO NEED TO CUT the 'plate edge' or metal plate for the inner joint as you see in this video. The word 'plate' used in the SAAB WIS is misleading and confusing. A plate is usually something flat which is what causes the confusion. It's actually a circular metal RING that's used to keep the tripod from departing (falling out of) the inner joint housing and it limits the travel of the tripod in the housing. The ring is on the open edge of the joint housing (not the spline end). The metal ring is strong enough to keep the tripod from completely coming out but soft enough that it can be taken off and re-used. The technique I used was to use a flat blade screwdriver to bend the edge of the ring upwards so the ring could be removed and re-used. It needs patience to work (bend) the edge up all around the ring then it just pulls or slides off. No cutting necessary. When I re-assembled, I slid the ring back in place and using a small hammer tapped down the edge all around the ring as best I could so there are no sharp edges that might cut into the new gaiter (boot). It's curious that this video doesn't show what happens after he's cut the ring and how he puts it back ! The SAAB WIS says that the 'plate' does not need to be refitted, only for production purposes, but if you don't fit it back you will have a helluva time keeping the tripod in the joint housing as you're trying to fit the whole drive shaft back into place. The SAAB WIS instructions for this procedure leave the reader a little confused because it's worded to imply that you have the OPTION of refitting the ring. Unless by design the tripod travel in the housing is limited by the drive shaft assembly, it just didn't make sense not to refit the circular ring. And watching him cut the ring left me feeling uneasy when everything I read (WIS, Haynes) said 'bend'.
Hej Skulle det inte varit lättare om du hade tagit isär yttre drivknuten ? Och då slipper du köpa en ny låsring och samtidigt kan du passa på och rengöra det yttre knuten. Mvh
Hei Torbjørn. Skal selv demontere indre og ytre drivknute. Og ser at du kuttet opp låseringen. Har du delenummer på denne. Og er den lett og montere tilbake?
Sorry, it was such a long time ago I did this I dont remeber anymore. I suggest you use new lockring and be really thorough so it dont leak, I was sloppy at first and the rotation sprayed grease all over
Denne lockringen du prater om finner jeg ingen steder. Ikke nevnt verken i epc eller wis. Om jeg skal klippe den av slik du gjorde. Må man jo ha en ny en.
I think its a generic product you buy from any supplier of car parts. As I said I dont remeber any specifics since it was quite a while ago but could be that they are supplied with the new boot.

You are a lifesaver🙏 Thanks for typing and sharing all the tricks!!!
Dude, hold on a fucking minute! You are going to get grease on that fine SAAB mechanic's uniform!

Ok Torbjørn. But I do not see that look ring any ware. But thanks anyway

Til god hjelp! Tusen takk.
