That has to be one of the most earth-shattering uppercuts in the history of boxing. It would have killed a lesser man than Cooney. Foreman was and remains one of the most fearsome boxers ever.
This is one perfect reason why forty something George would have also taken any title from any of our champions in 2023 - Joshua and a few more with maybe fury edging out a decision and usek too but most current heavies would have avoided George - even grandad George was still too good despite age !!
@@theblackstridersofficial2562l love big George and recognise that if the young George had the old George’s head no one would of beaten him ….but things move on and MMA has actually made our boxers fitter with different training methods and size really does matter ….Joshua , Wilder and Fury are just way way too big nowadays and no 6 foot 9 inch fighter has ever moved as well as Fury …..Even derek Chisora is 6 foot 4 and 17 and a half stones which is way bigger than even Foreman…
My sentiments exactly. Foreman is a legend
Two big strong mature heavyweights. Foreman felt the power of Cooney. Foreman said that Cooney’s punches were some of the hardest he ever felt. George said he had to try and get rid of Cooney fast because Cooney’s punches were bone-numbing to Foreman.
One thing for sure. Cooney was the only guy that hurt George in his second career. But many dont realize Foreman can take a Helluva punch. Foreman was never KO'd, just exhausted. He was so tired against Ali and Jimmy Young, and he went down from exhaustion and average punches. The right Ali sent him down with wouldn't knock him down if he wasn't so tired. Cooney had one of the best left hooks ever, and George didnt go down. Hurt, but recovered quickly. He gets all the ink for his tremendous power. But his chin was pretty tremendous, too.
I’ve said it and said again… @5:40 … the “no look” uppercut!… one of the coolest punches in boxing history!
You see it better at 6:20
Cooney could have knocked out anyone and he had great skill
George Foreman is my favorite heavy weight of all time! He has been such an inspiration to me my whole life! I guarantee there will many tears on my face when I hear the news of his passing. I hope I get to meet him someday.
One of the hardest punchers of all time he would have definitely took Tyson out with that punch, in his prime Foreman would have destroyed Tyson, even at 45 I would bet my money on big George!!
I have studied all of the boxing greats, heavyweights in particular, and I agree with you that George was the best. Joe Louis is my other all time favorite.
I was watching the fight on TV and felt that left uppercut from Foreman.
YES!
At the 4:15 mark, George Foreman was going to fight Mike Tyson after this win in January 1990 but Tyson lost to Buster Douglas in February 1990. Sadly, Foreman and Tyson never fought each other in their illustrious careers.
Wow, I would have loved to see that fight
Cooney does not get the credit that he deserves for his skill and athletic ability
I started watching boxing as a child when George Foreman was in the Olympics. I couldn’t believe it when Ali beat him.
Neither could George OR Ali!! You can see from the look on Ali's face when George goes down, Ali looked like he didn't know what to do for just a second. Had a surprised look on his face!!
I was a senior in HS and gave Ali no chance against Foreman. The boys in our school all were betting on what round George would KO Ali. No one even considered that Ali would win.
Ali beat him mentally
That fight was in Africa. George got hurt and they had to allow time for him to heal, but he had to stay in Africa. He hated being there and the longer he stayed there, it seemed to weaken him and strenthen his oponent. The fight was extremely hot and the ropes were really loose.....
I remember looking that on small TV in middle of night as kid. Nobody believed that Ali would beat Foreman. Ali was only superchampion from the past who was ripped of his title. And how he was too old. And no bad conditions can now hurt Foreman superior, supreme, so tough that he can fight bull in that ring. But in fight Foreman have no chances to hurt Ali, some magical aureole was around Ali and none best Foreman's punch didn't work. And Ali's gypsy mocking whole time.
In ten other matches Foreman would wipe the floor with Ali every time but this was that one.
Foreman hit Cooney so hard it jarred his kinfolks over in Ireland!
😂😂😂😂😂😂
@@michaelritchie-ch6ibu think he got hit hard, watch the Cooney vs Norton fight
Looney Cooney
to be sure!
The greatest uppercut ever
Foreman channeled Jersey Joe Walcot with that last punch.
At least Gerry tried to win, he threw many punches.
And to think, this was the version of Foreman that didn't want to hurt his opponents!
Yes but I think they should have banned his uppercut because it's a forbidden weapon. Incredible uppercut
Cooney was a big puncher who he couldn't take any chances with.
@@ElTerribleProduction 😂 forbidden weapon
I feel that George proved that he's the best heavyweight boxer ever. I don't care if he was slow,, or a power puncher, that doesn't win at the highest levels, finesse does, and George had learned lots of finesse. He was smooth to watch. he knew himself, and his boxing style was awesome in his comeback. He dialled up his power only as needed, and asked the ref to stop fights so he didn't seriously injure people. I think he proved to be the best heavyweight boxer in the world ever.
You could see Foreman hold back when the guy wobbled. Then he would just hit him again.
Foreman tem a mão de marreta! 👊👊🇧🇷
I know better than to get in a ring with George Foreman...
5:41 lmao rock em sock em robots
Foreman is the Greatest heavyweight of all time .....no one else did it at 45 years old....and Ali wouldn't give him a rematch in an era that everyone got rematches...
Dan Dierdorff’s “George Foreman BLOWS AWAY Gerry Cooney!!!” still ranks among my favorite all time announcer lines
This was Gerry Cooney's final fight in his career.
What a KO.
brain damage
prime cooney was a top fighter and dont forget he's younger than Foreman
no one in boxing history can resist to Prime George he was so strong for HW division
only a legend fighter like Ali,Fake ropes, trashtalk and jungle atmospher can stop George
even prime Cooney had no chance if he fought prime George he will never survive more than 2 rounds and he will crash him like a pepsi can .
@@entertainmentworld4224 This fight was a massacre. The ref should have stopped it after the first knock down. He was just standing there waiting for George to punch him
@@Steve-mp7bythis is Karma. he got back what he did to Norton.
I have seen this fight a million times but seeing Foreman's punches land in slow motion from multiple camera angles is totally different. Absolutely brutal.
Truly scary knockout
The last two punches are so energy-saving therefore so beautiful. If you noticed foreman’s facial features you can see, that he is god’s another version for Bruce Lee.
Cooney was no chump, he knocked out a 35 year old Ken Norton in 57 seconds. This fight proves out dominate Foreman was to obliterate Cooney like he did.
The norton fight made him a lucky chump.
@@jerrylanglois7892Cooney was skilled and athletic...you are brainless and biased🤮💩🖕🖕
Both these fighters hit unbelievable hard!
That flight is what convinced me that George Foreman was back
This looks like a lion chasing a gazelle! Who booked this?
Best uppercut ever
Excellent most excellent fight, Way to be Gerry Coney and most excellent performance from big George Foreman, Gerry was a excellent fighter just couldn't handle Big George's hitting POWER
Look at the disguise by Foreman, while delivering that devastating left hook😮😮
Foreman's power is unreal. Cooney had a few inches on him and was a huge puncher himself (a converted Southpaw who led with his strong left). But Foreman controlled the ring and Cooney was fighting on the outside the whole fight. And Foreman was 8 years older.
They have a video on here of Foreman hitting the heavy bag at his current age--74. Watch it. I wouldn't step in the ring with him now, let alone decades ago.
GF was like Predator here.
I love Foreman
Greatest Puncher ever
You don't try to out physical Foreman if you value your life
Exactly! That's why Big George Foreman knocked out Michael Moorer back in 1994 to regain the Heavyweight Championship he had lost to Muhammad Ali 20 years earlier.
I have heard Foreman say in interviews that Cooney was one of the most powerful punchers he ever fought yet it is hard to see even ONE punch by Cooney that looked like it shook Foreman even a little bit.
3:15
lead left uppercut. A difficult punch to land. Just like how Tyson knocked down Spinks
The funny thing is, I saw an interview with Foreman where he called Cooney one of the hardest punchers he ever faced.
Holmes said the same thing
He started well to be fair his jab was like a piston and whipping in some dangerous hooks he was giving big George some problems, but damn when he connected it was all over!
That's why Foreman had to step up his game and put him away. And why he didn't take any chances (hitting him while he was going down). In stark contrast to his other fights after his comeback, where he pulled a lot of punches and went easy on guys.
Cooney had a unique body shot to the lower abdomen that sometimes strayed below the beltline. I could see where that would really bother opponents not used to getting hit in that spot with that amount of force.
Its a saving grace , self serving type of complement. After you destroy the man , you then remind us how tough he was and upgrade your win.I 'm sure there were others who hit harder than Cooney
Wow! Those were some heavy punches thrown by Foreman.
Foreman's 1 ton punches on display.
Imagine what it's like facing George Foreman, you hit him with bombs that would knock out a horse and he barely blinks then just keeps plowing forward with bombs even harder than yours. You could always hit George, you just couldn't hurt him. Man has the greatest chin in boxing...ever.
In this fight, Cooney tried to do what Tommy Morrison did against Foreman, problem is he just didn't have the skill level to pull it off. Morrison stuck with the plan the entire fight and pulled out the decision, Cooney is at heart, a brawler and needs to stand toe to toe and exchange. Works against a lot of fighters but you don't win that way against Foreman.
That's True. 🥊
Monster Of Monsters UPPERCUT. Perfect timing. Walcott SMOKED Charles like that.
I call that upper cut the Joe Walcott uppercut!!!
Now thats power!
جورج فورمان اسطوره الملاكمة لا يتكرر
bro, noone speaks that
It Was Like A Giant Tree Falling In The Woods.
What an ending upper cut!! Amazing!! George sure know how to finish an opponent. Two good shits and it was lights out gor Cooney.
George brought those punches up beautifully , he knew he had him before he threw the last killer one.
Nice fly swatter right, followed by big uppercut at 5:17. Thing of beauty
Marciano, Ali, Forman, Tyson
Los mejores pesados dé la historia!
Prime Marciano was a lion heart, great warrior, a tough brawler with a top chin and stamina.
Prime Ali was a predator, hunter ,very fast ,top cardio, top chin , tactical fighter and very smart .
Prime George was a boogeyman, a beast , freight train and a steamroller who crash HW fighters one after one like a pepsi can.
Prime Little Mike was a hunter of retired, annonym and injuiried fighters, he need to won normal Douglas before compare him with legends of boxing.
George comes off as a super nice guy but in the ring he's a killer
His power, even in his mid-forties and in less than stellar shape, is mind blowing. Imagine what it was like in the early 70's when he was much quicker and in great shape.
Wow. What a finish. After he initially hurt him he didn’t waste a single shot.
5:11. I can feel that inside uppercut by Foreman in my bones...
Looked like the Hindenberg coming down.
Ah..the epic "drive by uppercut"!
The old man batted Gerry Cooney for sure.✔️ 🥊
One of the greats -- 76\5 with 68 k.o's.
Foreman the Best
No-one could ever read that uppercut, because George didn't show it. It was 280 lbs. of FIST on the chin, and nobody knew it was coming....
I hate what cooney did to ken norton so this is one of my favorite KOs of heavyweight history
Cooney just stood still and let George walk right up on him??
George Foreman's 👊 🤜 🤛 ✊️ fists and punches are heavy
How the hell did Ali withstand Big George’s power and knock him the fk out?!? HOW?!? 😳😂😂😂GOAT stuff man…
Ali was too quick for George, even though he was already past his prime by the time he fought George.
Brutal knockout... wish the ref had stepped in a few seconds earlier!
glad Cooney was able to get up after those shots, geez
George Forman the most powerful boxer on the planet.
George beat that man like he committed a crime!
From the opening bell Forman went straight at him. He seemed to have zero concern of Cooney's power. Sad we never had a Forman Holmes, or Forman Tyson.
Foreman beats both for me
Elite ring cutting
What a perfect upper cut, right cross by foreman😊
George was a great champion
Foreman must've been Kennedy's shooter in the grassy knoll because that uppercut... 'back n to the left' 😱
LOL!
Cooney was a good fighter, but he always found a way to be the second best fighter in the ring when he fought.
What a fighter Foreman was , he never backed up. These boys are the greatest in boxing, the era they fought in was the best, make today’s heavyweights look like something
The fact that Ali beat him is just unbelievable...my God george was awesome
That was due to an extremely foolish strategy by Foreman (back in 1974).
@@Mst-bh9ti agreed
That was fast
Foreman was a great fighter with a terrific punch. The way he destroyed Frazier was awesome.
In this fight, George Foreman used Ichiro Miyata's stance and Alexander Volg Zangief's Finishing Combo. What a Champion he is.
Yes, he admitted that in the post-fight interview.
Remember foreman caught him with flush uppercuts, no one stands in front of foreman like that🤕
Now I know why Tyson turned down $50 million to fight Foreman.
Payback for how Cooney brutalized Norton.
George didn't miss a single punch at the end!
Top dog on the Mt Rushmore of uppercuts.
Cooney was doing well, but he was washed up at this point.
Wow nice uper cut... SERIOUSLY WHELCHAIR
and this looks to be George later in his career ?
Kenny Norton is avenged! 👊
George demolished Him! I watched this live when I was a kid.
Alis 3 year exile and his comeback was something but george was out for almost 10 years and came back.
Foreman hit Cooney as he was going down, which is ironic because George always credited Ali for not hitting him as he was falling in their match.
George knew he couldn't go easy on Cooney. His punching power was no joke.
So, he switched to 70s mode and tried to finish the fight as soon as he could. No denial.
Foreman held back a lot of punches after his comeback. Watch his other fights, especially against journeymen. He held back a punch as Qawi was going down but Qawi faked it, stayed up and punched him in the face lol.
George Foreman got revenge for Ken Norton.
The ref went in the wrong direction looking for Cooney's head. But then he saw George follow up with the right.
Cooney got OBLITERATED by Big George!!
That last uppercut and chopping right...
😎🥊💪🏾💥😖😴
George was a real heavy puncher
Big George ❤
Two Geezers @ Caesars!!😉
Cooney the tomato can :)
Good night Irene 💤💤
Big George Foreman !!!
The freight train power of Big George!
Anyone not believing in George's power, take a look. This is a George past his prime, so just imagine what he was like in 1974.
gerry cooney THE GREAT WHITE HOPE who kept getting battered.
So much for the great white hope. Once he lost to Holmes, he was done. At one point he was pretty good.
