Some months ago I played Sonic Unleashed fpr the first time on the Series X and the day stages are just so much fun and a visual spectacle. Watching footage from 2007 I can understand why it was hated, but 16 years later the game is finally playable and enjoyable lol.
I agree to an extent. 3D Sonic has the most potential in my opinion but that potential still has yet to be fully tapped into. We’ve always been so close yet so far with 3D Sonic unfortunately. Sega really needs to stick to their working formula in Frontiers because if they trash it all over again for a random new formula they scrapped together last minute (like they did with ALL of their previous gameplay styles)…let’s just say I won’t be happy
This is my new favorite Sonic game and I’ve played a ton of them growing up. Sonic Superstars gets a 10/10 from me because it’s *exactly* what I’ve wanted since Mania came out; a fully original 2D Sonic game with unique mechanics throughout and a new art style.😄👍
Been playing the game so far and I'm almost finished with Sonic's campaign. This game is super fun, i like the new stages and the ost. The new mechanic with the chaos emeralds is cool to especially when fighting boss battles. Overall a solid game, really enjoying this!
As a 90's kid born in the 80's who's first game ever played was the original Sonic the Hedgehog on the Mega Drive/Genesis, it's wild to me to hear people say that they couldn't gel with the 2D's but loved the 3D games. Obviously its peoples various experiences and opinions. Its just very interesting to me as for me personally it was the other way around. Great content though 😊
This review made me smile so hard. Just the promise of how good the game is that I get from this video, it almost feels better than it probably will if the game actually delivers. Hell of a review man. Did a great job of conveying the feelings you had while playing the game. I felt like I already played it by the time I got to the end of your review. Fucking fantastic stuff. Keep it up bro
So from what I've seen across youtube, this game is surprisingly divisive, especially considering it's a 2D Sonic game. I see videos claiming everything from "it's the best 2D Sonic game since the Genesis era" to "it's trash" to "it's alright...it's fine". Here's the thing, whether it's 2D or 3D Sonic, the games have pretty much always existed in two school's of thought. The first being based around momentum based speed, emphasis on platforming and stage exploration. This was the focus of the Genesis era games and even continued into the transition into 3D with Sonic Adventure. Then Sonic Adventure 2 came out and the Advance games, where a noticeable shift occurred. This brings me to the second school of thought when it comes to level design in a Sonic game. The second being based around more linear stages that emphasize taking advantage of environmental inclusions such as dash panels, rail grinding and tricks to gain speed. Then came the "Boost" era which further leaned into this roller coaster of split second decision making to navigate stages. The thing is, you can't really have both. The classic style of gameplay will always be a bit slower so as to take advantage of more exploratory stage design, while that level of freedom and exploration will always be hindered by the pure emphasis on speed that you see from what came out post Sonic Adventure. While I enjoy both of these styles, I do think it's been long overdue to see that classic style of momentum and exploration return. For my money, I think Sonic Superstars does an excellent job of playing like an honest to goodness classic Genesis era Sonic game!
8/10 for me. I wish it was 25% faster. Love the puzzles and the platforming. My only criticism is it looses some of its fix during the end boss fights.
I love this game of what I played. I think its a valid complaint regarding the game being full price, but despite that the stages, replayability, and challenge is exactly what I'm looking for.
10:07 while I disagree that extra lives are outdated, the choice to take them out in this game was actually a very good idea, because some of these levels are long AF, and the majority of the boss battles drag!
@Matty you will find this true in all aspects of your life young man.... Once we remove our own ego and expectations we are free to really embrace what is new or different to us. I treasure you liking our fav blue fella, as for some of us we always preferred him to Mario even tho his games were never as good, or sold only 20% of our favorite plumber.
I've not enjoyed a Sonic game since I was a kid really so this is good to hear. I may try this when really cheap. Releasing at the same time as Mario and similar price is just asking for trouble lol. Especially when Mario is probably much bigger and way more levels (they usually are)
Glad to see so much of a return to what Sonic was in the mid to late 90's before Sega kind of went a little loopy with some Sonic games.Already have Sonic Colors,Forces,Frontiers,Mania and Origins Plus and yes even Team Sonic Racing for my Switch now I'll be getting Sonic Superstars too.
Thank you so much for your review! It's nice listening to a different perspective and one that comes from a "normal" person. I've got pretty tired of Sonic youtubers and twitter. Also also, I understand you, I played 2D Sonic and liked it when I was little, but I fell in love with 3D Sonic, after checking the classics and mania, I only loved CD and I felt that maybe Superstars would be a second 2D favorite... Maybe Again thank you for your input, it's a breath of fresh air, really, thank you.
@@Pan_Frytek nope. You know, I feel that most of the drama within the community comes from the fact that there's too much variety among us and we will disagree what's the best and what's the worst constantly. I really liked the verticality and exploration of Cd, it felt like a fast-paced metroid game, and it was great constantly changing the level due to time travel. Also, I really enjoyed the special stages (which I usually despise and think drag on the experience) and I appreciate how they put a f*cking stone before the goal in case I didn't manage to get enough rings for the special stage. It was a really nice experience 👌 Also, it isn't nostalgia as I completed the classics and Mania this year, and I never played CD when I was a kid. So yep, I do think Sonic 3 & Knuckles is amazing (mostly the bosses), but I fell in love with CD.
I agree, i think Sonic gets alot of unwarranted hate from journalists for some reason. Like one review complained about a mechanic thats always been a staple of soncis games like they just want to nitpick whilst praising Mario. I think its an excellent time to be a 2D playforming fan and both my favorite hedgehog and plumber have come out swinging this year.
Yeah its weird. Almost like the pineapple on pizza phenomena. Some people like to bash it because its fun to be together on the meme wagon, even though they havent actually tried it. But the fact remains, theyre both great 🌪🌀🔵🍍🍕
I thought I was the only one who had issues with the complete momentum killer in some of the classic 2D Sonic games. Superstars looks absolutely beautiful, can't wait to check it out! Great review Matty!
What i love about this game is the much more engagement you have on this and the gimmicks even tho they are a little bit too much but i enjoy them . This is probably my second best classic game right before s3&k
2D classic Sonic, as much as I hate to say it, kind of IS about memorization. The more you replay it the better you get and the faster you can go through these levels. If you play a Sonic game only one time, you're missing the point. These games have always pulled equally from arcade style design and from F1 racing. The 3D games are easier to get into because they use this same design inspiration, but because you can almost always see what's ahead of you, it's much easier to do well on your first time through. Though, 2D Sonic CAN be enjoyed on a first try based on your skill and your understanding of the stage layout language, because you can sometimes predict what's coming up, you can stay aware during passive traps that drop you onto a lower path or kill you if you don't jump or roll at the right time. I highly recommend you watch Pariah695's videos on Sonic, he's covered all the games up through Black Knight and he does these analytical deep dives into the mechanics and game design, it's really cool and they could help you enjoy all Sonic even more.
I think you were pretty spot on and fair with your review. One thing about 2D Sonic games is that their music is always top notch. It's really disappointing for me to see that Sonic Superstars really just sort of phoned it in in this aspect.
Really enjoy your videos, you’re so positive and good at getting people excited to play. You made me want to play this, but also Shadow generations. Can only really afford one. Which do you think I should get? I played (and loved) original generations if that matters at all.
I like Sonic superstars a lot, we have mania and origins for that more "hardcore" playstyle bc those games have lives, but playing this with family and friends is a really cool thing. It allowed me to play with my nephew and introduce him into 2d Sonic games without him being frustrated from how the original ones work
Yoh! I got the game and I played it, I finished it some days ago, and I LOVED it. It's a very fun game and it has a decent length and replayability! If I had to complain about something, the co-op is too unforgiving when you're a bit out of the camera, and I wish we were allowed to hit bosses more than once per turn. Oh yeah, and I will never understand why there's no online co-op, but oh well. But yeah, the levels are fun, it's nice that the powers are optional, it's great to have a second campaign, and the bosses are really fun! The final bosses are fun to fight against too (however, I do think that them having two phases is a bit too much, maybe put a checkpoint between phases because my god I wanted to cry hahahahahaha) CD is still my favorite one, but after it, I would put Sonic3&Knuckles and Superstars, they're VERY different games, but both gave me similar excitement while playing them!
I have wonder and superstars. I like this game more then Mario wonder. But I've always been a Sega kid. It's crazy to get our two child hoods biggest video game mascots new games in the same week. And both are great.
I think wut helped u is that they capped the speed of superstars for the sake of the co-op. most classics R uncapped so u can fly if u're good. as a longtime fan this is not replacin my fav among the classics(CD), & I doubt it will for others like me but it's "good" wit no caveats overall. It's basically the New super mario bros. of sonic games & that kinda limits it in some respects but that's fine as they'll improve & don't fall into the trap of "same game wit minor difference every few yrs" syndrome like those mario games did. I jus wish the ost had more bangers. This is near "perfect" to be someone's 1st classic sonic game. Since it really isn't much else other than "A Classic Sonic Game" & that's fine here. point is I liked it
Frontiers is my favorite sonic game. I love the open world and music in those open world areas. I do not like that the stages are very short though and that the game will force you into side scrolling making it very difficult to go somewhere until you break out of the side scrolling mode. I hope there will be a sequel. Also flying around as super sonic would have been so fun in open world.
this game was almost exactly what i wanted! though i wish you could play as your created robots from the battle mode in the main game, as well as another character that was in the game but not playable 😢 all around, it was a fantastic time for sure!
I was cautiously optimistic about this game, I didn’t wanna get my hopes up too high only to be disappointed, but this actually looks super dope. Will be picking this up soon. Many thanks for the review homie.
Don’t. A lot of these reviews are way too forgiving. This game is a mediocre mess with dog shit level designs and bosses. You will regret the purchase.
With Sonic the majority of reviews are never forgiving, Gamingbolt straight up lied with its criticism. The game is really fun!! I hope you can reconsider picking it up! However, as this is not a Nintendo franchise you can also wait for the price to drop a little! (I want to support the games/franchises that I like, but I just don't think that $60 is a fair price for any 2D game, maybe 45 or 50)
I fully agree with this. Mario games are incredibly fun for a short while, but they aren’t infinitely replayable like Sonic games are; thus giving Sonic games infinite value to me no matter how long or short their main campaign is.
@@dusk173 yup while wonder you know what your getting with mario so the overall formula hasn't changed but superstars is wacky wondering and nuts and is really enjoyable especially as both a solo and party game
Nick why are you laughing cause we didn't say mario is the better . So what mario isn't a god send that can't be toped especially since even sonic hater says classic games were the good ones . And we didn't even say wonder is bad im pretty sure its amazing but now it needs to be ready for superstars
This isn't a bad Sonic game at all and I really like the Artstyle too. My only nitpick though are the boss fights, they're rather forgetful. I haven't made it to the Super Sonic boss yet though and I'm just basing this on what I've played so far.
I recommend going back to the older 2D games if you finally got into it. Holding neutral (letting go of the D-pad) is an important skill in Sonic so you still move forward but you have a better reaction time for keeping the flow. I'm loving that they finally got the physics right mostly, but i'm having issues with attention to details, automated gimmicks that don't use momentum, some dodgy music.
This is the best review iv watched, I seen a few seem to trash the game and I don't get it, I have played a little bit of it and iv enjoyed it, the visuals, the soundtrack, gameplay is easy to pick up, it feels like the old games. I thought sonic frontiers was gonna be awesome but I hated, yes hated that game, so this one is a breath of fresh air, I say definitely get it if your a sonic fan!
Sonic 2 and 3 and knuckles were my favs. I like frontier and superstars have been awesome. Sonic adventures 1+2 and heroes and generation were blast. Prob been best 1 year span for Sonic maybe ever combine with Mario it's classic platformers golden age.
Just a warning that the game gets really hard when reaching the end, even more for a 8 year old After you finish the game you also unlock a new campaign and that one is almost BS levels of difficulty, so I would advise to warn your little cousin before or they're going to be very frustrated lol
I love Sonic to death. I'm the biggest Sonic fan I know. But I'm awful at the 2d ones. He's just so fast and slippery. I can't react to anything in time. Does this one slow him down just a little bit more than the classic games or is there an option to pull back the camera to see further ahead? I'd like to be able to finish a single 2D Sonic just once in my life.
This is definitely NOT the 2d sonic game for you if you wanna finish one lol it gets sooooo soooo sooo bad at the end. I think I’m pretty okay at 2d sonic, and I found it absolutely insufferable. Sonic 2 is a great start! I trust you can do it!!! The final stage with the two bosses is probably the toughest since you have 0 rings but if you learn their moves and how to dodge them they get extremely easy.
@@phillemon7664 most people nowadays I can't even consider a sonic fan if all they do is bash on a game without acknowledging the good parts about it, its unfair criticism that shouldn't count as it
Skipped school picked this up off pre order (fuck GameStop they didn’t have my bonuses ready) played it on a shmedium high and thought it was amazing and beautiful and fun faded music can’t wait to get blasted play this
its cool game but junkie at the same time, also for us who grew up with these classics, its cool to see how challenging it is but yet need more polishing
Wonder why Sega has never given Sonic a Flash style slowdown ability to keep momentum going and let the player tweak movements as you move along the stage
Not long I'd say, sonic games go on sale very frequently, frontiers is the best selling 3D sonic game since adventure 2 and heroes and even it was already being discounted on steam and other platforms 1 month after release
I’m happy with a lot of things about the game like inclusion of co-op, playable Amy, good physics, etc. I am also enjoying my play through for the most part. However, the game does feel a little generic to me. Whether it’s a lack of detail compared to the pixel art in the previous games (especially some parts on switch), quite a bit of songs being pretty boring, maybe something about the checkpoint special stages too idk. It’s hard to put my finger on exactly what I don’t like, but it doesn’t bring me nearly the same joy as mania.
@@richardfranklin6003 I’ve noticed lol, maybe in the future when it’s cheaper, but definitely don’t want to be spending another $60 to play it on a better looking platform. Mostly wanted it for switch because of the portability and ease of access to couch co-op
i'm nitpicking, sure but I want Sonic to be fast and it doesn't seem like we're getting that here, anyway, love the channel Matty, good vibes all round :)
Not as good as classic sonic in generations because u could go to the shop and assign power-ups u wanted and what not, that made it really fun gameplay wise.
The main reason you get hit and sent back is because you're falling for the traps of the level design. It purposefully tricks you into passivity and mindlessly holding right, and punishes you for that. You're not supposed to react to it. But you can predict it.
This game gets a bad rap. I prefer to finish levels in 2D in 60-90 seconds. Not run around exploring with powers that slow me down. But once I got over that there’s fun to be had. The graphics engine is broken, but the game still looks very pleasing to me.
@@RayzaNCIf I’m being completely honest I like both equally for different reasons. Probably because Sonic Generations was my first Sonic game so I never really became biased to one version of Sonic or another. CD is still my favorite one, but after it, I would put Sonic3&Knuckles and Superstars, they're VERY different games, but both gave me similar excitement while playing them!
4:25 - Hey, that's the Burst Wisp!
Since it really isn't much else other than "A Classic Sonic Game" & that's fine here. point is I liked it
Sonic CD you can maintain momentum the entire time barely stopping and finish levels quick. In a very fun way.
What a treat for 2D platformer fans. Both a Sonic and Mario game in the same week.
Interesting video! I really agree with these points and i feel like this is overlooked honestly
this game was almost exactly what i wanted! though i wish you could play as your created robots from the battle mode in the main game, as well as another character that was in the game but not playable 😢 all around, it was a fantastic time for sure!
Play this couch co op and it goes up to a 9/10, so much fun!
Multiplayer Special Stages are great fun! 🎉
no it isn't.
You get resetted the moment you even slightly leave the screen. Super forms are gatekept by only being useable by one person
@@NaOkiiThese most definitely aren’t a problem for casual players, but yeah the camera is horrible unfortunately
You will regret the purchase.
yeah I watched a few more reviews after this one and decided to hold off. What a bummer. I was actually really excited to try this game out.
With Sonic the majority of reviews are never forgiving, Gamingbolt straight up lied with its criticism.
The game is really fun!! I hope you can reconsider picking it up!
However, as this is not a Nintendo franchise you can also wait for the price to drop a little! (I want to support the games/franchises that I like, but I just don't think that $60 is a fair price for any 2D game, maybe 45 or 50)
I most underrated Sonic game of all time next to Heroes, everyone’s sleeping on this game
Great review Matty! I'm stoked for this one. Holding off for sale just because of monies and time but definitely a must play for me!
bullet can be used multiple times midair not just once. its spammable
Tbfh I played a bit of both of wonder and superstars. And and I will admit Superstars is way more fun
🤣
This game has made me feel like a child again. The original sonic the hedgehog is the first real game that got me into gaming and especially sega. ❤
I look forward to playing this gamw however i dont agree with the pricing so ill wait for a sale.
I'm just relieved to hear it's a good game.
Pretty much same here
This is the best review iv watched, I seen a few seem to trash the game and I don't get it, I have played a little bit of it and iv enjoyed it, the visuals, the soundtrack, gameplay is easy to pick up, it feels like the old games. I thought sonic frontiers was gonna be awesome but I hated, yes hated that game, so this one is a breath of fresh air, I say definitely get it if your a sonic fan!
BRO! If the music was on point this game would be like a 9/10.
I love it but the multiplayer feels off. The camera only follows whoever is in the lead so who ever is just a little off the screen has to respawn.
Sonic 2 and 3 and knuckles were my favs. I like frontier and superstars have been awesome. Sonic adventures 1+2 and heroes and generation were blast. Prob been best 1 year span for Sonic maybe ever combine with Mario it's classic platformers golden age.
Wow ! Ok I’ll check this out
how does this compare to sonic generations? sonic generations is my favorite new school sonic, that has 2d classic sonic and 3d tall skinny sonic.
Just got this game for my 8 year old cousins birthday. I’m excited for him to get to play it
Just a warning that the game gets really hard when reaching the end, even more for a 8 year old
After you finish the game you also unlock a new campaign and that one is almost BS levels of difficulty, so I would advise to warn your little cousin before or they're going to be very frustrated lol
Git gud
This is definitely NOT the 2d sonic game for you if you wanna finish one lol it gets sooooo soooo sooo bad at the end. I think I’m pretty okay at 2d sonic, and I found it absolutely insufferable.
Sonic 2 is a great start! I trust you can do it!!! The final stage with the two bosses is probably the toughest since you have 0 rings but if you learn their moves and how to dodge them they get extremely easy.
@@BIG_MUNKY why can't you be more constructive? Like the comment above you for instance? Haha
@@OnePolishMoFohe’s a Sonic fan. Fans of particular series and franchise usually hate them with a passion. It’s a rule lol.
@@phillemon7664 most people nowadays I can't even consider a sonic fan if all they do is bash on a game without acknowledging the good parts about it, its unfair criticism that shouldn't count as it
I’m definitely going to play this on switch after Mario Wonder
Holy shit this might be the review to convince me lol
great video man
Skipped school picked this up off pre order (fuck GameStop they didn’t have my bonuses ready) played it on a shmedium high and thought it was amazing and beautiful and fun faded music can’t wait to get blasted play this
Definitely checking it out
You should go through the rush games sometime!
its cool game but junkie at the same time, also for us who grew up with these classics, its cool to see how challenging it is
but yet need more polishing
Wonder why Sega has never given Sonic a Flash style slowdown ability to keep momentum going and let the player tweak movements as you move along the stage
Really good review
How long will I have to wait for this to be on sale? 60 seems way too steep for something like this. Should be like 30 max lmao.
prob a few months since it seems to be doing well
Not long I'd say, sonic games go on sale very frequently, frontiers is the best selling 3D sonic game since adventure 2 and heroes and even it was already being discounted on steam and other platforms 1 month after release
@@Colecionador7162Why does IGN have Frontiers at 7/10 only, instead of 8/10, or a 9 at most?
@@bassplayer807 it's simply their rating for it, no real reason really, people can have different opinions on a game, including critics
@@Colecionador7162 What did you think of the game, I have a PS5 but have yet to buy Frontiers? I might buy Superstars too
Do Rayman Matty! And try Sonic NDS games, they’re really good
Throwing a bit of shade at her former management
Haven't played it yet, but it looks awesome!
Switch version is ugly try the main consoles
@@richardfranklin6003 I’ve noticed lol, maybe in the future when it’s cheaper, but definitely don’t want to be spending another $60 to play it on a better looking platform. Mostly wanted it for switch because of the portability and ease of access to couch co-op
It's currently $19.99 for a physical copy at Best Buy.
Im loving this game!!!
i'm nitpicking, sure but I want Sonic to be fast and it doesn't seem like we're getting that here, anyway, love the channel Matty, good vibes all round :)

As of now I'm enjoying it nearly as much as Mario Wonder.
Is there a demo or something?
@@daniellejackson6543Mario Wonder got leaked, you can just get the ROM online
Yup, another game to buy. I'm gonna be so broke.
More modern characters need to playable in the next games not just sonic and shadow.
This is one of those reviews that makes no sense to put on this channel. This should be a MrMatty video.
I still would love to see your thoughts on sonic rush
Dat CRT tho..
Matty. His name is DR. Robotnic.
A man if you want another thumbnail artist I’m your guy
How many lives do you get ? And is the game length pretty good ? Like does it feel like it ends to quickly.
remember when yall were hyping "frontiers"??.......yea me neither 😂😂😂
100x more enjoyable than Superstars.
@@RayzaNCIf I’m being completely honest I like both equally for different reasons. Probably because Sonic Generations was my first Sonic game so I never really became biased to one version of Sonic or another.
I just like Sonic in general and I wish the fanbase wouldn’t war over things that don’t even matter.
