2 hours worth of work? I got about 20 minutes in and I cracked the joy stick off on my office chair trying to get the dump truck out. I lost all bucket control, had to travel out through the hallway in the chair, in reverse to get to the refrigerator to get a lunch, the boss wasn't too happy almost ran her over , told her I was digging a pond, she didn't buy it.., told her I needed a lunch for myself and Chris.. She said Chris who? I told her I was too busy to talk and to reach me on the radio if something important came up, I think she called me a crazy bastard. To top it all off...,when I came back, you were gone home, I ended up having to eat two lunches. That's what friends do👍👍👍 I'll be seeing you tomorrow!
I could just about hear him saying in the intro, "Today's little project, we are going to dig a series of small ponds using the haul truck." And grammarians such as I would have winced as we thought, "You mean 'with the haul truck,'" only to be astonished several minutes into the video, when (they) did -- in fact -- use the haul truck to dig a series of small ponds. I can almost hear the audience gasp!
My mind is showing me one awesome pond. With the lighter colored soil the water should be a nice shade of blue. Nice spot to learn how to paddle board or kayak.
Boy Chris i got to hand it to you you stay so calm in the middle of all that adversity and just work out a different way to do the job. I congratulate you
Chris. We put the pump in a 5 gallon pail with a rope and holes in the sides so the pump doesn't suck up the mud. Not that I trying to be a know it all.
This entire channel needs to be a show on tv. Every single video is so interesting whether you’re getting a new piece of equipment, you’re doing a huge project or you’re just chillin with Winston. I love this channel!
Drill several wells around the uphill side of the pond & use smaller pumps to pump water from each one 24/7. That will lower the water table & catch ground water before it comes into the area.
I wish I could show you the 200 acre man made pond we built down here in bama basically its a golf course with a big housing subdivision. We removed so much topsoil I didn't think we would ever get to the end.
Bad time of year for building a pond. I did about a two acre pond in the middle of October and it was bad then. Lots of purple dirt. Good luck with your pond.
Damn Chris u kept ur composure and was like ok we try this and try that. I would have been throwing a fit like a 2 yr old child. Love watching ur videos.
Funny how everyone want to reinvent the wheel. I'm pretty sure this pond isn't life or death that it gets put in. Sometimes waiting is the right option. And what Chris said about those tracked dumpers was right. They can only haul about 10 yds and are very expensive.
Front plowing mud, right rear sinking in the mud, it was flashing through my head, Radio for backup the ship is going down!!! lol, fun unknown dirt adventures with Chris and Crew.
Could slot a 12 sdr 35 pipe and tape the spicket end, dig down 5 feet past finish grade in one spot of the pond, put the pipe in and fill around it with 3/4 stone and use that as a well to drain out the ground water and keep it down below digging grade, overall would dry the project up faster and keep the water below desired digging level 🤷🏼♂️
A BIG thanks for always describing what the project is and what methods/equipment you will be using. As it is VERY evident, I know nothing about installing a pond (from scratch, no less), so I'm enjoying the heck outta this project....cuz, just becuz. Again, a big thanks, Chris! 👍😀
Pandemic lockdown viewing. As a 64yo Great GM might seem odd for me but I like to see projects to completion. Will be interested in seeing this finished. My thought was you might need to build a temporary road or platform to drive on. Nice work. Fun commentary. :)
Last resort would be to put in a temporary narrowgauge rail line, and haul soil out along that. Failing that, a longish section of conveyor belt would do the same thing. Hell of a trouble to go to, though.
It is really interesting to see how the problems develop and how you work through solving them. Could you cut a haul road through the topsoil layer (since the sandy gravel layer is well consolidated)? Or is the top soil so deep the whole way/ road would be too long to be economical? Lot of material to move twice, might be less to cut a road? Thanks for the channel, learn a lot by watching you. Amazing touch, and equally amazing how you move between technique and speed.
I was half expecting a haulage truck turning up with like 100 mats and making a makeshift road with the mats for the Volvo to haul of the top soil.....Also why not dump the top soil and clay along that fence line raise that up you mentioned making a burm to hide the housing estate...what a great video....Stay Safe LD18
love moving dirt! Many years in the mine setting and love moving it, but it lacked the unbelievable views and work environment shown in all of your videos. You have the best office ever! Your work environment and surroundings only strengthen my sorrow for that guy in a tie with a corner office!
No but when he pulled on the front and the ex started down i did lean back and pushed on the arms of the chair like i was tipping over😆, crazy i get all into this type of video but horror movies are boring.
Hey Chris I know people give you a lot of different ideas but figured I'd throw this one past you. Back in the 80`s my dad built some rubber tracks out of really heavy conveyor belt for our 10 wheelers kinda like the old German half tracks to keep them from sinking and getting stuck. He made some bolt on center things that went between the duals to keep them from falling off you'd have to mount them on the inside and outside since you have single tires. It gives you 3 to 5 times the square inches on the ground. They actually make bilt on cleats and such for conveyor belts now that you can just buy. Probably be cheaper than renting a tracked dump truck and you could use them on multiple jobs. Just thought I'd throw it out there. I'm sure there's some big queries in your area that'd have some used heavy 48 inch or so wide belting you could get pretty cheap.
Chris said the guy is in a hurry to get the pond dug the only option y’all would have would be to bring the 220 out there and you and John just keep leapfrogging The dirt over as you dig it until you get it out to the other side of the pond and just let it stay piled up there until it dries and then at least you would have the pond dug and finished and yeah I know it’s handling dirt two or three times but you would get the pond dug out and then when it dries come back and move the big pile of dirt and put it where you need to put it but anyway brother a great video you and John and yawls family stay safe and keep the videos coming
Wonder if you can drill a soil core to test the types of dirt before you start digging. That was some digging you had to do and get to move the dirt again. All in a days work and it is interesting to watch how you figure it out. Stay safe and thanks for sharing.
a thought. let the truck drive on the hard dirt. you already clearing cutting out the soft dirt and piling it up. just keep the truck on the nice hard packed. you might have to cut a little out at the end where he dumps it. make a little road. but I'm betting it would work.for driving across the pasture for sure. love it!!
Nice job getting all that dirt moved you were definitely busy and your going to need to get a D9 dozer for the rest of this job to pull the hual truck if the ground stays like it is. Great video Cris
Tell your truck driver to swing his cab back and forth all the way while in first gear, them trucks'll get out of almost anything when you do that.. I used to dig retention ponds in Charleston, SC and our trucks used to get stuck literally ALL the time from that wet, gumbo topsoil/clay mix. Usually swinging did the trick, otherwise I had to come out of the pond and track half a mile to get the trucks unstuck. fun times lol
i am currently on a site in a similar situation. i ramped the haul road down to the "better" material so the truck sits on that instead of the soup that is on top. seems to be working for me and now my machine is elevated above the truck.
Oh Yes , The Joys of the Rainy/ Winter Season...lolol... You know the routine from now til Spring Chris, Fighting the rain, Mud, and everything in between !! Man, a lot of water had already started running in, in just those few hours you was digging. I'm sure you will come up with some kinda system to get it dug, and finished...lolol...fingers crossed ....lolol .... Have a Great Evening Man !! On to the Next....
So maybe some one with some influence could suggest a half track haul truck it would help spread the load more and maybe eliminate the sinking problem. or a band that wraps around the tires and makes it so you swap back and forth.
Here we would just wait for the ground to freeze about three foot deep and then drive across it, but I guess does not happen where you are at all. Looks like a tough go of things for a while. Summer drought? Ya need some oversize snow fencing that you could roll out as a drive path made of logs. Is it better far away from the new pond area? Or do you need help the whole way to the other end of the haul route? Good luck, y'all will figure out something I am sure.
Is enough of it solid enough to use the skid steer to load the truck with away for the soft area? I know that is a lot of work not in the original plan but might get the job done. Does not take much of an operator to just haul and load the truck. Might be cheaper than a tracked haul truck.
I might be crazy but what about digging that wind row, let it dry some and flatten into a road for the haul truck then dig it toward the end. Might be able to throw your mud mats in the wet spots by the gate
Love the digging, there's something satisfying about a full bucket. BUT.....can you cut them down to about 10-15 minutes? 30- 60 minutes is too long. Even at 2 times play speed is too slow. I just want to know what you'll be doing, then a couple of clips to show progress, then show what you did, and done. what do you think?
chris could you cut a ditch over to the ditch on the other side of the fence to help some and use that ditch for a future over flow? use some straw bales in a v pattern staked in place to help with dirt erosion?
Hey Chris, I have 13 acres in NW Indiana and have some lower ground that drains off to a creek that I wanted to build a 1/4-1/2 acre pond. The water table is also up so I am thinking it should be no problem and fun to do myself. I see what you have to fix from guys who don't know what they are doing, so I figure worst case is once I get into it, if it doesn't go well, I can hire someone. Long story short, what is your opinion on digging a pond on fairy slow sloping ground? I would say from back to front where the pond would go is maybe a 3' drop over 1000 feet. Do you have another video like this one that can be helpful to plan this out?
2 hours worth of work? I got about 20 minutes in and I cracked the joy stick off on my office chair trying to get the dump truck out. One things for sure this is certainly going to be a good place for a pond. It won’t ever go dry!
Holy crap! I thought that haul truck was going to have to just become a permanent water feature or fish habitat. LOL! Nice work as always.
The topsoil looks better than pretty much anything I've seen in your videos - lovely dark loam.
Cow pastures can have some really nice soil.
This entire channel needs to be a show on tv. Every single video is so interesting whether you’re getting a new piece of equipment, you’re doing a huge project or you’re just chillin with Winston.

The feeling you get when the tracks are spinning but you aint going no where.
I’m glad to see it’s not just me that life’s screwing with

Good place for a pond

You can find a lot bigger tracked dump trucks in Russia doing work in peat bogs. But i think it will be hard to haul to US and also get service! Haha

Most of my state (Utah) doesn't see 10 inches of rain in a whole year, much less in a single storm. That would be a 100-year flood event. LOL
Track dump trucks are awesome for winter projects. Use mine often.
You need some thing with tracks in the middle under the load, to stop the wheels sinking. Then you can drive on the wheels on the road.
I’ve seen big highway projects where they have 3-4 elevators moving material. That’s what you needed there - no need to drive.
Nice job getting all that dirt moved you were definitely busy and your going to need to get a D9 dozer for the rest of this job to pull the hual truck if the ground stays like it is. Great video Cris
