  • This video is about converting a Fulton MX-991/U flashlight to LED and also use Li-ion rechargeable batteries. I took an old military issue flashlight and put in a Nite-Ize 74 lumen LED bulb to replace the PR6 incandescent. I then power the flashlight using adapters that were intended to hold two AA batteries in a D cell form factor. Instead, I used Orbtronic Li-ion rechargeable batteries.

I would like to see a comparison between led and incandescent bulbs when it comes to how long the flashlight can be on before the batteries inside die.

Nice! I'm going to pull out my old angle-heads from my alice gear and give 'em some respect! Great how-to vid!

Consider: The MX was originally a 3 volt system with a ~1 Watt bulb. LEDs generate heat and the heat requires dissipation similar to incans. This model flashlight uses a metal refelector (ok) and a plastic bulb holder. (not good) If the LED wattage is excessive the plastic bulb holder may melt or the LED will overheat (then fail) when illuminated for an extended time. Additionally, if the flashlight is used frequently, overtime the plastic in the lens or flashlight head may degrade. Make careful modifications that ensure that your modifications(product redesign) results in a functional light over the years not just in a demonstration video. Nice work btw.

Very nice. Did you happen to notice if it got very hot?

Not very. The LED isn't terribly high lumen, though it is significantly brighter than the incandescent it replaced. Given that the housing is all plastic, heat could be a concern, but it poses no problem in this case.

Unfortunately, I’ve never seen such an adapter.
