I sold fragrances in a department store in the 70’s. We were encouraged to promote layering fragrance to extend the lasting power of the fragrance. We would first apply the fragranced lotion to skin, preferably directly after bathing while the skin was still damp, then the spray or splash fragrance followed by the body powder. It really did keep the fragrance from fading. Most fragrances today do not offer the full line of products, unfortunately.

I agree, it is nice to be able to layer fragrance and it is a shame that more companies dont offer dusting powder anymore. Dusting powder, especially a fragranced powder is such a pleasure to wear. Now you can by chafing cream and deodorants, but with the competing fragrances and the chemicals they are worth it.

I can still get matching powder and lotion for my Youth Dew, and keep the full line at all times. I have a half full box of Cinnabar powder that I bought before they quit making it. I'm very sparing with it. Sometimes I take the lid off just to smell it. The only other big name dusting powder I have right now is the one to go with my Red Door perfume. I absolutely hate that the matching powder and lotion are available for so few perfumes.

Yes! I worked as a makeup artist in the 70's and we were told to stress the importance of layering the fragrance products.
My mother (born in 1916) would layer her fragrances and taught me how to apply the products. My favorite layering fragrance was Opium. My mother loved Dior perfumes/powders. My grandmother (born in 1880) used Blue Grass exclusively.

    • @lindabrown0

@@marthawelch4289 I wore Blue Grass for years. I came across a Blue Grass bath soap in its own soap dish at a church fund raising and thought of buying it for nostalgia. If it was still there when I was leaving, I'd buy it............By the time i went to check it out, it was gone (lol). Chanel 22 was my favourite perfume along with all the products including the dusting powder.

My grandma always had a container of dusting powder on her dresser. It seemed such an elegant, feminine thing to do. Because of that, I keep a gorgeous 1940s box of powder on display in my bathroom. Even if I don't use it, it feels like I keep a tradition going!

My mother used Youth Dew EVERYTHING; eau de parfum, body lotion, bath oil, and body powder. I didn’t find it overpowering, since she was using it from before I was born up until the day she passed away - that classic scent was just always around. I found it comforting. To this day, it reminds me of her. ❤️

I work as a healthcare assistant and we assist in personal care. Some of the elderly ladies have stuff in their wash bags which always make me think of your videos. It’s like it’s actually from that era, not just updated versions of vintage products 🤣 We always give them a choice of using their own things or hospital things and sometimes I’ve encouraged the latter as some of these things look really past their sell by date.

I enjoy using Woods of Windsor, Yardley of London, Youth Dew, Shalimar, Beautiful and Red Door dusting powder. I collect powder boxes and transfer the powder from the metal tins to a powder box with a powder puff to apply the product. One powder that I miss most of all is Lair du temps. What a beautiful collection you required! Lucky you. When I was a kid in the fifties, my grandmother used a powder that was very popular. It came in a metal container with a metal top, that was “flat”-not a good description. But it was only floral scents, such as lilac, lavender, lily of the valley, etc. But my favorite was heliotrope. Have you ever seen it? I wish I could remember the brand, but it’s been too long. I never smell heliotrope without thinking of that wonderful lady.....

This may sound odd, but I'm a Gentleman that enjoys the more elegant and even dare I say, finer small indulgences of life. Body/Dusting Powder is one of them. My Mother was a Cosmetologist and one of the things she taught me was looking good and smelling good were two sides of the same coin. So when I get ready for my day, my bath soap, shave soap, body powder and EDT should all match. When I go to the Barber he/she knows to finish the cut with a neck shave, and powder for the finish. I like Lavender, Sandalwood, Rose and Amaretto scents. However with my Yardley's Gentlemen's Classic Powder I use either the Yardley's matching EDT or Paul Sabastian Fine Cologne. I know this line of thinking works well, because I'm 63 yrs old and I still get complements from young Ladies in their 20s, 30s and 40s. One should always Look, Smell and be a Gentleman. Have a wonderful day.

While talc is not good for especially inhaled, a single ingredient or two is not that bad if precautions are taken such as not inhaling the talc unlike most products today where the entire product is dangerous to use. Most synthetic chemicals nowadays are toxic even in small quantities. That is why people nowadays have to watch their "chemical loads" which is a term used to monitor how much your body us absorbing from all sources.

Most popular cosmetic face powders still contain talc, which talcum powder is made from. Two that do are Cody Airspun and Cover Girl Loose Powder, as well as Clinique. A number of brands, such as Avon, offer some talc-free formulas.. The cancer issue is linked to if the talc came in contact with asbestos.

@@NancyL0220 Yes you are correct, TONS of makeup (eyeshadows, bronzers etc.) still contain Talc because there is no clear, proven link to cancer from talc therefore it hasn't been banned. We have to think, literally BILLIONS of people and babies were just dowsed in it for over 200 hundred years. If there was a clear link, we would have seen it, like we have with asbestos.

I’m just wondering if they could make Tin containers back in the 1940s since they were using metal towards the war effort during World War II. I’m just not sure though. Love this video, Laura.💄

I used Loves Baby Soft as a teenager.I grew up with all the older women in my life using powder then lightly spraying perfume on.My Mum used Cachet,Tabu,Wind Song.My favorite was Chantilly that my god mother used.It smelled way better than the perfume in my opinion. And the puff was so soft and velvety. She would let me use a little on my arms.I felt like beautiful princess.
Also growing up my Dad used Old Spice. He had what was called after shave talc.He used it quite a bit

I’m really thinking about trying dusting powder. I have fairy dust by lush and plan to put it in a container with a puff to use to feel classy and sophisticated. I really don’t want one with talc so this will be a nice introduction for me. 😊 thanks for the video I enjoyed watching and learning.

Cinnabar was first issued by Estee Lauder as a "soft Youth Dew" in 1978, (and was compared to YSL's Opium). That was my signature fragrance in the 1980s, and I still have the original scent in a dusting power. This came packaged in a beautiful deep red box with a very nice puff, and a Chinese symbol decoration. Cinnabar was reformulated and relaunched in 2015, and sadly (IMHO) is definitely lighter now. If looking for a less heavy version of the classic, you could try that.
