What a Skincare Routine From the Early 1800s Looked Like |Real Historic Recipes|

- Almonds, oatmeal & cream sound like a good breakfast but this time we're putting it on our skin! I picked out some recipes (or receipts as they used to be called) from the 2 books The Toilette of Health, Beauty, and Fashion (1832) and The Mirror of the Graces, (1813). Let's see what they look like as they are recreated 200 years later. Like always, watch till the end to see images of the actual receipts as they appeared in the original book.

After watching this follow us to our 2nd channel Frontier Patriot where we'll talk about some strange acne cures from the early 1800s. These include veal juice, bore's fat and a whole lot of apples. ua-cam.com/video/Xt3h0WUB8lY/v-deo.html
please tell your cat that i love them
Do you think a "normal" housewife had the time or/and money/products to make all these beautyproducts? Or was this just for the ones with lots of money? Love the way that the oatmeal didn't go to waist and you had your personal feeding-"servant" 🤣
This is amazing!! Your cabin is adorable!! You guys live the life I swear!!! 🙏♥️💯💯💯
The bedroom is very clearly a stage set. Unless it's like Dr Who TARDIS, i.e. the building is bigger on the inside than the outside.
@elbergudo8567
Do you know what Americans say about mexican women and donkey shows.?
It's funny as hell.
Ron feeding you oatmeal in the washtub is the height of luxury. 😂
Yeah, I'm jealous!!! 😉
Needs a drizzle of honey and some dried fruit and 110%
That was the best part. I wish Justine and Ron would do more videos like these. I like watching her cook and listen to them chat while they eat but this was a whole other level. Please do more of these Justine.
Dearest Ronaldo! 😆
@@lina-yw5kh 🤣🤣🤣
I love that you and Ron couldn’t help but giggle at the oatmeal feeding scene.
Very similar to my current skincare actually. All homemade and using a lot of oats - it's the best ingredient!
I love oatmeal anything too. Making it like this the toner was very thick and milky it felt incredible on the skin almost like a hydrating gel.
I use a homemade oatmeal pack. Face feels so smooth. I didn't know about using the oat milk as a toner so I'm going to try that thanks.
We make hair and face masks every week-- simmer flax seeds & oats in milk or water, steep in dry herbs, strain it through a stocking or old sock, then whip in raw honey and oils. Use more and heavier oils/butters for curly/kinky hair and dry skin, smaller amounts of light oils for straight hair and oily skin.
@@stilltrying619 Yes, same here. And rice water. I see currect recipes for hair make fermented rice water. I might be too lazy for that.

This channel has a special place in my heart. I love vintage content.

I forgot the name, but there's one that they do 1920, 30s,40s 50s and 60s..I believe all these but probably more 1930s, 1940s...from what I've seen
I'm impressed. The receipts and ingredients haven't changed in 200 years - only the packaging. Add a little essential oil for fragrance and you have the natural 'modern' versions. Thanks, Justine. Fascinating video!
I adore Ron and Justine's videos .so refreshing and beautiful to watch
Recipes not receipts
Not in the early 1800s.

@@filthypeasant9524 To be fair, a lot of women look the same whether they do this stuff or not. Most of us just do these things because they relax us. The only part of my hair and skin care routine I’d actually look different without is moisturizer, because my skin gets dry and cracked without it. The things that makes women look different, but are actually quite bad for us are makeup, hair products, (gel, smoothing cream, hairspray) and hot tools (blow dryer, curling iron, straitener). A lot of women actually have damaged skin and hair from these products, and instead of not using them and letting their skin and hair heal, they continue to use them to cover up the damage. I’m sure some women are going to get upset and disagree with my comment, because it goes against modern cosmetics, but it’s a fact that modern skin and hair products are designed to make people look good in the moment, not long term.
Oatmeal for the skin still used today. When my son was little the only thing that gave him relief from his eczema was Aveeno oatmeal baths and lotions.Beautiful video as always💞
Yes it's what I use too I love Aveeno.
Aveeno body wash, shampoo and body lotion every day for me!
They have oatmeal body wash I have some in my bathroom right now
I use Aveeno baby oatmeal lotion post-shower. It's really nice.
Oatmeal has so many benefits
I have had a black kitty for 10 years. He was a stray, but now has a wonderful life. I love him.
This was a cool video. I love to learn about how people lived in the past especially their everyday life. Thank you for educating me!
Me too😊

The “shower”/bath routine I didn’t know I needed
Love the background music!
My wife would take oatmeal baths if she had a rash on her legs or arms. She has skin allergies when it comes to certain fragrances and even grass. She had a terrible grass rash from walking our dogs back in 2018. She always used to take oatmeal baths using "colloidal oatmeal". Works like a charm. Even made her skin smoother and softer.
Thanks for sharing. I have eczema real bad (resting for the last two years straight. Will try the oatmeal bath ... I eat oatmeal nearly every day, but this oatmeal bath thing is new to me. Thanks again. Sue 🌺💜🦋
I had to take oatmeal baths when I had an awful case of the chicken pox as a kid. The smell still grosses me out a bit, because my sinuses were messed up then, so the smell was weird to me. I know it's great for the skin, and I use oatmeal lotion for babies as my main body lotion.
Oatmeal treats skin diseases and allergies
@@suemichalka7941 same I have eczema too and I think oatmeal 🥣 skincare could help my rashes than waste money on medicine
What do you fins helps to not clog drains with oatmeal?
Mesh mesh seems so comfortable like you've been her human from beginning of her life ❤️
Kitty looked so cozy on your lap by the fire! Oatmeal is great for soothing irritated skin, but I would imagine almond meal pomade being a good moisturizing scrub due to natural oils.
Cleopatra bathed in donkey milk and rose petals. My grandmother had me bath in milk, rose petals, and oat water. It not only softens the skin but helps with itchiness.

Watching this episode made me realize how really lovely your skin is! I am very interested in the oatmeal water and believe I will be trying that. 👏
I love your videos! They are almost like watching ASMR, so relaxing and stress relieving. Your kitty is so adorable and it's obvious you love each other which just adds to the sweetness of your videos. Thanks for giving me a few relaxing moments after a busy day.
omg yes black cat owner gang! I have one as well and she is the sweetest little kitty I have ever owned. Love your channels. They're so relaxing and inspiring.
Black cat gang unite!
Black cats actually GOOD LUCK..the fanatics made them negative
i love the cat too! when she had to stand up and she put him down he was like "mummy where u going? come back"
Makes me think about how I take hopping in the shower to rinse off after mowing in the summer for granted. That’s a lot of work! Thanks for sharing
Yes! Love this content! Please more! I make all my skin and hair products! It's helped heal my issues and save so much money. I have a mango tree and save the pits to make mango butter. I made your lard and lemon zest moisturizer before with a few tweaks and it's lovely! Thanks sharing all this!
Can you please share how to make mango butter
I’m currently in love with beef tallow based moisturizers! My skin has never looked better (“kheyleve naturals, just lolo”) it’s amazing!
One of my favorite videos! Beautifully done. 👏🏻 And y’all are precious together. ☺️
I'd love to know how you know so much about cooking & working with fire directly. I am an incredible gas stove cook. But you've got skills beyond that. I have no idea how you make perfect everything with simple fire! You're amazing 😊👍
You are so lucky to have found a perfect cat. I was double lucky to adopt two perfectly sweet cats. 😻
Even my at-home spa days aren’t fancy like that lol, and being spoon fed by husband? Talk about luxury. Oatmeal water for the skin?… hmmm… I must try. And I’ll need to get the hubby to spoon feed me too! 😂
Aveeno makes an oatmeal powder for babies with skin issues. I use it on myself and my son. It really is soothing for dry irritated skin.
@@48mavemiss2 Can second that, love that stuff.
wow this took a lot of reseach and work to prepare. We are so used to opening a bottle or jar! Thanks!!
Thank you June I love doing this and love comments like yours.
A relaxing bath while being fed. 1800s lap of luxury. Thanks, Justine! See you soon! xoxo
I put oatmeal in a nylon stocking and into the tub. My whole body was as soft as a baby's behind. 😂
I love this episode can you do one on hair care? And that time of the month? I’ve always wondered how could it be done if you were of little means and higher status
So sweet. Like going back in time.
Как мило, особенно когда мужчина кормит.Этот момент пересмотрели несколько раз. БЛАГОДАРЮ! 💖
I've never watched someone else bathe before but this was oddly relaxing! Lol. Actually the formulas used are very similar to what I use. My entire beauty/cosmetic routine is comprised of historical formulas I purchase from an Etsy shop. After a year, I can hardly believe the condition of my skin and hair. I don't even need makeup anymore! I'd definitely like to try the almond bath receipt though...I bet it smells heavenly.
I love the smell of almond oil!
Which Etsy shop you use?
@@rakeshshah1796 - I get my products from both LBCC Historical Apothecary and Second Chance Farm Sanctuary, both on Etsy.
I’ve never seen pictures of people in the past with acne.
Cause they edited photos 💅
They did but they also ate healthy and had natural ingredients for their skin
Having your husband feed you while in the bath is even more luxurious! Showing appreciation for all the delicious food you make! I'm definitely going to try these recipes for the skin and ha e a spa day!
Nice way to jump into the New Year! Just can't wait to see, what you have in store for the year to come!
The cat was adorable💜

Beautiful and relaxing video. Well done 😊
I just love your channel. Thank you for being so interesting, all the research and hard work that goes into these very enjoyable videos. By the way, I have a "receipt" book that was my great-grandmother's. :-)
Awesome!!! What a treasure!

Awww I love you two ❤ Your both very blessed to have eachother. This day looks so relaxing Justine . 😌 I bet your skin felt amazing after all this self pampering. Stay blessed 🙌🙏 guys
I am touching 40.. even this day I use soaked rice water as toner, chickpea powder+turmeric+milk as a weekly mask. extra virgin olive oil as under eye and lip moisturizer.
I havent bought any high end products ever, just regular sun block for outdoors. Thank you for this oatmeal tip.. will def try it out. ❤
What a fantastic video! I couldn't help but laugh when the picture panned out to reveal you squeezed into that barrel like a little sardine!🤣 Just Imagine having to do that whole routine every time you fancied a bath- I would be too exhausted to climb out of the barrel by the end of the bath!!! Really enjoyed watching. God Bless 🥰
It's nice to see the everyday things we take for granted brought back to life. What a cozy bath and especially having a man feed you oatmeal while taking it. Very cool video.
Thank you for showing us how hard it was on an easy day. Even though it looked like you worked hard to enjoy some relaxing, it looked beautiful. Loved the music too. Thank you.
I love the music it's so therapeutic and relaxing while taking baths or just play while cleaning or cooking .
This is wonderful!! I do love your cooking videos, of course, although I also love when your content diverges just a little to the other routines and activities people had to do back in the day. 🙂 Happy New Year!
Your skin care routine is working because your skin is GORGEOUS!! Thanks for the great videos - enjoying them all thoroughly!
Sugar scrubs are wonderful too, and I bet they were used back then. 2 parts sugar to one part oil. Oils that work very well are olive, grape seed, coconut and avocado. Rub a small amount onto damp skin, rinse and pat dry. 😊
How’s the bed working out? Do you have to tightened the ropes regularly? Just curious. The video you posted about it was fascinating. Loved learning where we got the phrase “sleep tight.” 🤓
Thanks for the educational skincare video! I have made a few balms and salves using bees wax and oils over time. These receipts are familiar but more complex that the modern equivalents. I will definitely try these! Thanks again.
Looks very relaxing and the song is so pretty 🎵 🎶 🎵 🎶

I use oatmeal water even now, it's also good for eczema. ❤️
Awesome. Something like this has never been videoed before, in the history of the World. No BS.
I REALLY loved this one!!! ❤ Thank you !
A lady in her bath! How scandalous! 😯 (Another great video!)
Aww that’s love ! You looked so relaxed! Stress free bath!🙂
Oatmeal is the best! I use my FAB oatmeal hydrating toner! And it’s the best!
My 8 year old son loves this music and anything “old fashioned”, so thank you for these wonderful videos! Love everything about it!❤❤❤
Very interesting to watch you make all these luxurious products for skin care!
I hope you will have a full size tub in your forever home🤞🏻🙏🏻
I bet it was hard not to giggle a lot more. Ha ha This was fun.
I am Amazed by these products that were produced at home and used for the skin and a bit of pampering! I want so much to try them when I find I can! Thank you and love your videos!
natural beauty treatments without chemical additives, now I understand why the women of that time had beautiful skin
Enjoyed this episode and music. Thank you! 💖

I can never get over how adorable you both are. xD I bet that spa day was a fantastic thing after cooking over an open fire all the time!
Wow that looked so relaxing and then Ron feeds you too, when you guys were trying not to laugh that was the best.
I got chicken pox for the first time in my mid-twenties. This was way b4 the vaccine was approved in the US. Anyway, it was steel-cut oatmeal baths that soothed my skin. Oatmeal is magic!🥰🥰🥰🥰
Rice water is great for the hair. Especially if you're allergic to everything. Lol
How do you use the rice water on your hair? As a rinse in place of shampoo or as a conditioner after some other cleanser?
Avon now has Rice Water skin care for very reasonable prices..they have a 3- piece set of trial sizes of a toner..an emulsion and a face cream..all for only $7.50..its not available until April 27th this year..so many people ordered it..💕
@@MJF1958 use rice water like shampoo. I add a bit of acv because of my skin condition.
Please make more videos like this!!!
My great grandmother used lard on her face in the winter when it was very cold and dry. Just a dab smoothed in
We love you guys. That bedroom is lovely. Your car is absolutely precious.
Aww, you and Ron sharing oatmeal while he sits by the washtub is so sweet and romantic! You guys are the best...
That black kitty cat jumped up in her lap and I was all like "IT'S SO PRECIOUS!!!" I just wanted to reach through and kiss it on the face a billion and one times. Looks JUST LIKE my sweet black cat, Magic. I THOUGHT she had a cat, because in another one of these videos I could've sworn I heard purring, lol.
And these videos are AMAZING! Literally, I don't find myself getting fed up with watching them. They're amazing!!!
so cute when he fed her
That pomade is the old time cold cream. The cold water was key to it (off the outdated hot and cold theory of disease, most skin troubles were “hot” conditions that needed cold ingredients to treat. The pumpkin and melon seeds are also part of the idea.)
If only i had a cabin of my own. I would sleep well, cook, read, write, and all would be well in the world..... Well, at least i have oatmeal, so i guess i' ll try that. I really love all your videos.
Joy if you peruse it you will have a cabin someday (and more oatmeal to enjoy in it).
@@EarlyAmerican Who knows, some dreams do come true. I already have the cat required though, and the oatmeal was a success, so that's a start! Be well!
It's my understandingthat "baths" back in those days typically consisted of a damp wash cloth and maybe some soap. A tub full of water was a rare occasion, and a beauty bath even more so. Such luxury!
Yeah fr i dont think most of people in the back could afford this lifestyle.people think its real smh ..
@@golding3264it is real even if it’s not for the poorer people back then..
Exactement!
The anticipation of a hot bath while the water boils over the fire, just lovely! A priviledge we take for granted nowadays!
Thank you for these wonderful videos, I feel like I’ve gone back in time to a better day. And you look like you were thoroughly enjoying this :-)
Well I wasn't expecting a racy stocking removal scene 😂 I hope Mr. Dorn knows what a lucky man he is! You kids are so sweet.
Thank you so much for sharing! This was great!
these videos u post about pampering and skincare are my fav! women worked soo hard back then and its nice to see they knew how to think of themselves too! Ron feeding u oatmeal put a smile on my face. awesome man! he knows how to treat his lady!!
Very soothing & relaxing. Hope you had a great time, too, Justine ^_^
I would of love to live in this era she has such good recipes and body care that's not harsh like they have now
Ah, how peaceful. And Mish Mish is there, too. 😸
Thanks so much for all your time and love in making these videos. I've tried a few of them and they are definitely a variety of cuisine
My only issue is that there were no preservatives used in the skincare at that time and so creams were often quick to go bad and become breeding grounds for bacteria.
My only question yes how does Ron fit into that tub????? I know I couldn't fit into it laugh out loud... But in all honesty you guys are absolutely the best video on UA-cam. Every time I turn in to see this I'm just It's blown away by your sense of humor and your caring about your characters keep up the good work God-bless both you . Ron and Justine. I think this is probably a house they film in rather than live in every day considering there doesn’t seem to be any sort of clutter or everyday items around the house
Very interesting. Great job on the video.
Justine, I'm glad to see you pampering yourself after all your hard work!
I love the cat as an additional feature to your videos.
This video is too sweet, I can't even deal with both of you! Gosh, thank you for making it! I've tried a homemade oatmeal face scrub and we also used egg whites as a skin tightener when I was little....way better and more natural than the chemical products we buy today! And your little black kitty is so sweet too, just like mine! Bless you both! 🥰
Hello
Interesting video ----never knew what was used in their skin care back then. Did you have to make one or more of the products over or was it one & done? Lots of work to make beauty items so glad I didn't live back then. Y'all amaze me learning plus doing all the frontier things but I enjoy watching them all.Bless your hearts!!❤
i love this channel, nothing makes me happier then seeing you and ron smile
It all makes sense. Thank you so much for these videos!
Thank you for all your living history videos, I especially appreciate how you convey the detail and nuance nonverbally, I learn much better that way. Quick question: What's the procedure for emptying the barrel of water once the bath is over? If you take it out bucket by bucket does it matter the drips on the floor?
Kitty cat🖤🖤🖤
My mom used to take raw oatmeal and cold water and put it on my sunburns as a kid. For minor 1st degree thermal burns only; because I was very prone to burning and wouldn’t be in the direct sun for more than 45 minutes per day so it never got to the 2nd degree burn point. Stuff works really well that is for sure.
So many hardwork for just a bath.. applaus for my ancestor 👏🏼
I'd love to see what sort of recipes were around for hair care back then if you know of any!
