I feel like this is low key the greatest talk ever. In her last sentence, she explains how this is just a larger version of an intrinsically basic issue. Sharing information is important and fantastic and powerful, however there is a time and a place and a method. A government lying to its people is terrible, but so is gossiping and betraying trust among a set of friends. A thousand thumbs up wouldn't be enough to share how much I loved this talk.
Exactly, there should be a way to report a friend who's saying things not mandated as correct thinking. We have models for this - Communist East Germany, you could give your friends name to the Stazi, or the KGB in communist era Russia. Yes - you are so right - let's invite totalitarian rule into our bedrooms you complete idiot. It worked out so well for the North Koreans. No free thought! 10,000 boys were abducted by Boko Haram - go spread that news.
I was highlighting how I found insight in this talk about a way I could treat my coworkers and fellow humans nicer by understanding that my opinion is just as valid as theirs, without either of us being wrong and therefore by me giving more thought of what I say and don't say and the tone of my voice and my choice of words. But if you see this video as communist and freedom restricting I'm sorry to have triggered you. It is not how see it.
On an apparent not-so-important side-note, 10,000 boys were also kidnapped, converted or killed by slit-throats, shooting them while they were sleeping, or locked in rooms and burnt to death.
This is why I fact-check even things my friends post and let them know if they're unknowingly sharing fake news. Snopes and Politifact are your friends, people!
It's interesting to use the term "alt-right" like that, as alt right is quite the term to be throwing around, and you seem to not understand the meaning behind it. Who are these "alt-righters" that you speak of?
When you put the CNN logo on its side - it says 33. 33 as in the 33rd degrees of Freemasonry - which is exactly who CNN are, in the same way as the US Presidents are 322 'skull and bones' secret society men from Yale - Secret Societies run this World. Dwight D. Eisenhower said it in his Presidential Leaving address, and JFK said it in his 'secret society' speech - before they assassinated him.
Wow, I expected a water-is-wet kinda talk and response. It's bewildering how people have come to distrust media that has informed our parents and grandparents, simply because they report on issues that some of us happen to disagree with. I see what happened with this kidnapping, but americans equating it to their own news troubled really need to re-examine themselves. American and Nigerian governments? Quite a different discussion. The talk has a good lesson to it though. Cross-reference.
The comments here show me that the problem isn't CNN or FOX... it's us. Ready to point the finger and get angry at anyone or any entity, launching off on rants as soon as anyone disagrees with us. Certain that we're the ones who are right. What's needed is face-to-face dialogue. If you don't like the media then get off your damn computer and talk to your fellow citizens. The less we interact, the more extreme and divided we become. Guess who wins.
Why so many dislikes ? We're talking about girls taken away from their family, it doesn't matters if it's one or one hundred, how would you feel like if it was your sister or daughter ? Would you be like "yeaaaah but there's not so many cases, the kidnapping of my daughter is an exception so it's ok" I don't think so. Start looking further you bunch of trump supporters
Oh yes they were killed, burned alive and other horrible deaths in many instances. But those deaths aren't what we should be talking about ever, because what was done to these girls is far far worse than the deaths of boys.
magottyk well, they werent reported on. Oh the mainstream media KNEW but only said it were some "people" kidnapped again. No one batted an eye. But OH when they kidnapped GIRLS the western world got on fire, the whole world chanting "bring back our girls" together. Sweet isnt it. The girls were released eventually if i recall correctly. But every single one of the boys were killed. Just like the thoudands before them. that's the real fake news
of course, if you can use the same narrative for killing an animal for meat why not here. how it sounds "at least they suffered for a little time, might have been shot by a gun in one go".
How about Sarin and VX to ISIL. 19 Myis Universidad Ballica Kampusu the most heavily guarded college in Turkey.. In 1973 a US Marine was guarding Seabees burying Sarin and VX rocket systems in the dunes of Turkey. He doesn't think Assad is gassing his own people. The college has 12+ armored personnel carriers and air defense systems on the beach next to their airstrip, obvious photoshopped areas of the facility, underground entrances, garbage they can't or won't throw away, which also resembles US weapons crates. The old port north of the college and the recent tailings match the description given by the Sargent. Google maps shows these things fairly well.
bhahaha. TED has no control over who comments on their videos (I hope they don't censor) But they do have control over who gets to do a talk. To use your own words some talks are simply puke-worthy...
I tend to avoid any sorts of news all together as an attempt to only trust what I see in person. Do I have a responsibility to consider problems outside of my day to day? Doesn't it seem that over time, humanity discovers/moves towards interaction which is loving, compassionate? Does it make sense to push moral values upon individuals that have yet to discover the truth of them from scratch? What is truly the reason for the spread of the popular civil rights movement? Someone please weigh in here, I'm young and uncertain of my responsibilities toward my fellow humans.
I don’t like your negative reporting about Africa. It makes you be like poison to Africa. Change your ways of failures as far as journalism is concerned.
Remember way back when, when "progressives" and the left were against the CORPORATE MEDIA like CNN? Instead of now defending them just because they don't like Trump? So glad I broke away from that brainwashed partisan crap.
Why are people disliking this video? She's advocating to think about the news you share and the effects it has if it's false. What's wrong with this message?
I've wasted 5 minutes listening to a story guilting me into agreeing with her points, rather than her using arguments. I wasted a further 5 minutes writing a comment pointing out the hypocrisy in her speech. I wasted more time complaining about the manipulative speakers on TED, and the obvious agenda their organisers have. I spent less than a second clicking Unsubscribe. Time well spent.
I admire Trump's power of influencing the weak minded. If this video would not have mentioned the statement "fake news", it would have not gotten this many dislikes. Educate yourself. A single man cannot cannot be right when the whole wold calls against his alternative bullshit facts. Please use your logic.
99% of this entire comment section should be reported! Did any even watch this video? Does any single person out there has one intelligent comment on the story this woman has told? Her message? I’m so upset you can all be kidnapped by Boko Haram for all I care.
*Currently more than 1/3 dislikes*, Can anyone explain to me why is it so bad to fight against abduction?

Obviously talking about CNN, Washington Post, NYT etc...they in fact do a LOT of harm.
Kathy Campbell Wallace What about Fox and Breitbart?
On an apparent not-so-important side-note, 10,000 boys were also kidnapped, converted or killed by slit-throats, shooting them while they were sleeping, or locked in rooms and burnt to death.

Funny to hear this coming from a CNN journalist.
Not what I was expecting.

trump much? I'm pretty sure most of us got the term 'fake news' from when he started calling out fox news.
wow after reading these comments, I'm surprised by how many alt righters watch Ted Talks
TheMightyWill I'm surprised they even try to watch something educational! Though I doubt they can understand half of what they're hearing.
It's interesting to use the term "alt-right" like that, as alt right is quite the term to be throwing around, and you seem to not understand the meaning behind it. Who are these "alt-righters" that you speak of?
I don't understand the reason for so much negativity. Can someone help me out? Lol
CNN
FOX is 10x worse
At lease they report all the news! have real debates instead of 1 trump supporter vs 4 opposition.

+youcantignoremygirth Too true. Luckily only normies are watching TV for news at this point.
Destro7000 Normies?
Fatter you are, harder you are to kidnap. Stay safe. Eat cake.

200 schoolgirls kidnapped, but what happened to the schoolboys?
magottyk
Killed probably.
Boko Haram has a history of being 'merciful' towards women, while having no qualms about killing men.
Oh yes they were killed, burned alive and other horrible deaths in many instances.
But those deaths aren't what we should be talking about ever, because what was done to these girls is far far worse than the deaths of boys.

I think these speakers need to check their sources! Pure propaganda these talks...
What would Saint George Floyd think?
common in muslim countries. hopefully youtube wont delete my comment.

The same research also shows that a large swath of TED subscribers downvote on title alone.

because they spout "CNN is fake news" nonstop
Can someone explains to me why there is so much hate on this video? I honestly don't understand 🤔
That's ironic, beginning a talk about fake news admittedly with a fake name....
Why are people disliking this video? She's advocating to think about the news you share and the effects it has if it's false. What's wrong with this message?
but the real question is will it blend
Watch The Red Pill documentary, by Cassie Jaye.. What about the boys Boko Haram took?
