★★★½
BEST TRACKS: "I Don't Fear Hell," "Scrappers," "Wednesday"
Ending off the record and, assumedly, the band itself, on a song called "I Don't Fear Hell" may be one of the coolest things ever done by a soon-to-be-retired band (and it certainly helps that the song itself rules too). To All Trains is a Shellac album, and it is not ashamed of refusing to reinvent what it means for them to put out a record. In turn, this isn't a "grand finale album," so-to-speak. It is, however, a great band doing what they do best one last time. It feels hard to complain about that.
Solid review! I also love the tongue-in-cheek vocal performances that Albini brought to Shellac's records, like when he interrupts himself in the "We'll be Pirates!" mantra on Scrappers
Oh yeah absolutely! He had that sort of self-awareness that I think made him a really interesting figure in his music in general. I think it's sorta interesting because it manages to add some humor to his stuff while at the same time partially adding to it feeling even more deranged, which balances itself out in a way, I would say. Thank you for watching!
Love Shellac. Albini's untimely death really sucks. Great review.
Thank you! Was hoping this would be a solid review for the end of such an amazing career. Much appreciated!
