  • A site survey of the haunted lakes. The three lakes which form Earlswood Lakes; Boating Lake, Engine Lake & Private Lake were constructed in the 1820's as a source of water for the Stratford upon Avon Canal. They took five years to dig and fill, at the cost of £297,000. Earlswood Lakes continue to feed the Stratford Canal, nearly 200 years after completion. Earlswood Lakes are also fed by tributaries of the River Blythe - which also act as outflow should the lakes become swollen.
Amongst the many labourers who built the lakes were French Prisoners of War, soldiers from Napoleon's armies who were taken prisoner during The Napoleonic Wars. Due to the hard labour and poor conditions some of these French prisoners died during the five year construction.
The number of French dead & their individual names are not known. But local legend says they were buried on the lake bed and denied a Christian burial. It is the Ghosts of these prisoners who haunt Earlswood Lakes - denied of their funeral, unable to move on.
The Ghosts have been seen, figures dressed in ragged dirty clothes from the early 19th Century, drifting aimlessly along the shoreline. Mournful spirits who do not seem to notice the living.
The optimum place to view these Ghosts is the northern and western shores of The Private Lake (around the ruined boathouse).
Also, the road which separates Engine Lake from Boating Lake, by the Dam - this site also has paranormal provenance.
