- The new Mac Studio is here and it packs in the powerful M1 Max chip into a body size that is bigger than the Mac mini but much smaller than the Mac Pro. And at $2000 the base model might end up being the best configuration on the market for most users with good specs and enough power tackle almost any need.

Thanks so much for reviewing the base model, everyone else seems to be looking at the Ultra! 🙏👍
Thank you. Hope the video was helpful!
@@GregsGadgets very helpful
It's new so, ...it's a novelty atm
Well cuz the M1 Max is the same chip as the 14/16 inch - so it will have same performance.
Though this is the cheapest way to get the M1 Max at the moment
@@BlendlogicTech that does assume that everyone knows that. Since I have no interest in a laptop I have no prior knowledge of that chip. This review is closer to what I needed.
LOVED the ending! (Yes, I stayed to the very end... and glad I did)! Found your channel today, and am busy watching your videos. Great presentations and quality content! Thanks!
Thanks a bunch for the video. You convinced me to buy the base model. Aaaand … I’ve never been happier. My iMac 2015 kept freezing up every time I pushed it (it didn’t take much pushing) and I’m really enjoying the increased productivity already.
I had a screen, no way near the screen quality of the studio display, but works for me. Already had a couple of external disks and I was off and running in no time. And saved myself a bunch which will go towards faster external storage.
I noted it on your Base vs Mini video but thanks for these video, I got the base and it's simply amazing!
Thank you Greg I always enjoy your reviews and you help me immensely in making my final purchasing decisions, keep up the good work my friend
Thank you Gregg f/reviewing the base model and objective Studio Display perspectives! Two great reviews.
11:26 USB-A ports are a nice touch for music creators. We're stacked with peripherals that may be quite old (because music hardware doesn't change so quickly), so not having to dongle everything is super nice.
ditto for those who still use wired keyboards and mice - my daily driver is a Roccat Vulcan 100 Aimo
I'm disappointed that it doesn't have FireWire 800 ports, they are really useful for professionals even today.
It should have at least 3 more USB-C/Thunderbolt 4 ports in my opinion.
Ain't that the truth. I have 2 MIDI interfaces which are USB-A and a iLok. Plus a DAW controller.
Most printers and scanners are still using USB-A. Really, USBc is overkill for a printer
I love the slightly warmer tones of the lighting and background in this video, looks great :)
Glad you like it. First time shooting this new set lol.
This is what I'm planning to get. No upgrades, just pure base model. I have an external drive for all of my stuff, and the RAM is more than enough for me, so this is really all I need. I got an M1 iMac last summer, gonna sell it and go back to my old PC's ultrawide monitor that I loved. Not quite as crisp, but I love the wideness and it was tough to go back to a screen withs smaller dimensions
Great video, this is more than enough for most content creators! What it will also do is future proof your game! The standard M1’s pro, air and mini were equally great this just takes it to the next level.. Great work brother 👌🏾💯
Wowww Greg ❤️. I enjoyed the very beautiful background ❤️👌 more than the Mac studio 😀. And great informative video as always 👌🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks so much! Glad you liked it
Depends on your needs, mine are photoshop and internet/mail. I bought the M1 upgraded to 1 Terbite and double the base storage at about $1200. Best I ever had.
Good LORD, having your studio display sitting that close to the edge of the desk is giving me hives. I know it's just for framing for the video, but god do I want to just scootch it closer to the middle of the desk lol
Very happy for those usb-A ports. My interface, midi-connector, keyboard and mixing station are all usb-as.
Would actually want even more!
Thanks Greg great video you have made up my mind to get the base model!
Glad I could help
Great review, thank you!
i love how you compare with the macbook pro. thank you
Good, straightforward review.
I agree! My M1 Studio Max is coming in about a month.
I have a feeling the cooling system is probably worked up for the the maxed out ultra chip. Unfortunately where I live the base model is $3099, but I do definitely like all of the ports.
I hung around for the bonus content and wasn't disappointed😄
That's why ya gotta watch to the end.
That Big Mac bit really got me.
🍔
Look at Alexibexis Video, thousand times better
I’m totally smitten with the box on this thing. It makes me giggle. I can only imagine my smile when mine shows up (in 3-4 weeks . . Or 5 . . . )
That ending. The box was more expensive than the mac
Lol.
Question: when in everyday low performance tasks, are the fans audible?
Great Video! Does Mac Studio still suffer of having slower USBC ports like mac Mini does? This is a big point for me to understanting if switching from my Mac Mini to this new Mac Studio. Thanks!
Got it with the 1TB drive. Can’t wait to hook it up to my Studio Display that arrived yesterday.
That's the only upgrade I would get as well. It's not a big investment to get a 2x size SSD. Smart decision.
LOL that unboxing at the end was GOLD hahaha, the best unboxing award goes to it lmao
Thank you lol!
Thanks for sharing. Blessings on your day.
Thank you!
How is the quality of speaker in Mac Studio by itself? I'm thinking of hooking a Mac Studio base model to an existing AOC 27" monitor, which does not have speakers.
hi! thanks so much for the video. People out there seem to be complaining about the M1MAX fan noise at Iddle ; what is your opinion on that ? thanks !
Great shot of the Big Mac!! ;)
Thanks. Enjoyed your review. For now I'll stick with my 2019 iMac.
Great video! We are not saving money compared to a mbp because with the mbp you also get an amazing screen, that would cost at least an extra $800 if bought separately.
- screen
- keyboard
- trackpad
- camera
- battery
It’s kinda backwards to say that we are saving money when Apple doesn’t let us buy a M1 Pro version. The M1 Max is a niche chip on the MacBook Pro. M1 Pro is the one most people get.
So far, I have only seen reviews from videographers. I am looking forward to the ones made by photographers using the basic configuration
Thanks
And audio engineers
It’ll be just fine for photographers. In fact so many photographers use computers not even a fourth as powerful as this. Even photoshop doesn’t take much anymore.
I know a photographer who does macro and does a ton of compositing in photoshop and layers and stitches many photos together and he uses an old laptop with an i5. If it works for video, it’s more than overkill for photos.
Great job! I want one.
Today I learned that the Mac Studio has the best-designed box I've ever seen.
Can we use Mac studio with other monitor via HDMI?
If à buyer needs to get the computer and screen - wouldn't it be a better buy to get the 16 inch mbp with m1 max?
... after using a curved Samsung display for past 3 years... I cannot even dream going ever back to flat ones even-though the resolution may be superior on these newer ones... I just love how the curved displays feel - so cozy .. I love it beyond words!
interesting, i must try it. $1600 for the mac monitor is too much.
For creative content 2TB really makes sense as does 64GB memory. So 8-12 week wait for a custom box. If you need a machine now it appears the base is your only option.
great great review!
Hey Greg! Congrats!
I’m going to get the second step Max with 64gb/4tb and the Studio Monitor. I have several external drive enclosures with 18tb drives and two Thunderbolt hubs, one TB4 and one TB3.
That’s what I went with. Except I only got 2 tb.
When you benchmarked the FCP render were you using Compressor? Thanks for reviewing the base model (the one I ordered).
G4 cube was my jam!!!
I bought this because of the pandemic I never leave my desk with my laptop (it stays put), I already have a monitor and I want to improve my posture which has deteriorated from hunching over a laptop for the last 10 years. Ready for a dedicated work machine that doesn’t hum like a jet engine.
Thanks, but what I really want to know is if the 32 GPU core version is a worthwhile upgrade.
no intro. Straight to it. I like you
I went with the base Mac Studio, with twin external 2TB 980Pro SSD's. I got a BenQ EW3280U monitor (refurb) for $399...couldn't be happier.
This review makes me lean more towards the entry 14" MacBook Pro :). More for your dollar with MINILED screen!!!
Great outro!
I mean if you already have your own speaker system and mic/cam setup then really you'd only be paying extra for the design, which some people might want but others would probably take the similar panel for less in that case lol. The camera could be nice but I already have a nice speaker system and mic, and the panel isn't high refresh rate or even mini LED so I can't think of a reason that I'd want it.
Unless you're a gamer, you really won't need high refresh rates and this is true for professionals.
do you know any good monitors for this that have speakers?
Hahaha 😄Loved the unboxing segment Greg!!
Thanks for the review and especially the benchmarks. What's the deal with the slower SSDs below 4Tb?? That really sucks and seems like a deliberate gotcha to make people buy the larger disks. I was going to go for the 1Tb SSD and get external storage, and now I'm thinking again...
It's nothing new, just a matter of fact for SSD's that the smaller capacity drives have lesser performance.
Maybe I missed this but how do you know that the 1TB and other SSDs aren’t the faster 7.4GB/s SSD?
Very interesting!
Im unsure what to do. It’s almost 8 months since the Mac Studio and studio display were released, it’s now I’m wanting to buy a new computer and monitor. Should I wait for the m2 version or just bite the bullet and buy now. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Does it make sense to upgrade to 32 core GPU instead of the default 24 for video editing in Davinci Resolve. Its a $200 upgrade
Really depends on your workflow, the type of footage you deal with, if you do a lot of color grading with 3d graphics, blur effects, or lots of layers it could be worth it to upgrade.
@@GregsGadgets Thanks. I mostly do green-screen removal via fusion delta keyer. I also do multi-cam videos but no color grading or other fancy effects. I guess base model will suffice :)
same case here...24 or 32 GPU...does it make a difference for editing video on FCP? +$200 or not?
I didn't expect the ending LoL!!!
I’m going to see what the next Mini looks like. I think the Pro chip may be the sweet spot for me.
I also hope they release a Mac Mini with M1 pro. For maybe 1200 bucks, that would still be great value. I just hope they put 16 gigs RAM in the base model rather than 8.
@@gourav2711Since these are SOCs (System On A Chip), I would assume that anything using a M1 Pro will have the same memory options as the M1 Pro in the MacBook Pros: 16 and 32 GB.
@@gourav2711 the M1 Pro starts @ 16GB :) with 32GB max. Cheers
@@gourav2711 As long as the storage starts at 512gb we are good.
well well well; I also waited for the M2 Pro and the M1 Max really sounds like a great deal now lol
I was thinking and hoping the M1 Max will be a bit more powerful on the Mac Studio compared to the MacBook Pro 16"
Not yet due to some software bugs but after they’re sorted out, the thermal advantage of the Mac studio will definitely show properly.
Love the Max version review. I bough the Max version with the 36 core gpu and 64gig of ram with 2tb ssd. Can’t wait to get it at end of month.
Did you get scammed!?
That is the exact same spec im thinking of...im buying the device for music production though, so i hope these specs will do!
I’d prefer to have my ultra set up with all 6 TB4 ports in the back. And, 4 usb-a (keyboard, digital studio monitors, dual 12TB drives). On the front, combo SD + *cfexpress* card slots. The audio jack on back should be a combo headphones and optical out.
Now I want a Mac Studio AND a Big Mac.
Can you make a video on YOUR SETUP , CAMERA , LIGHT ..
AS VIDEO QUALITY AND SOUND IS EXCELLENT..😀
THANKS
Relaxed hair Greg is sneaking back!!! Yes.
Great video. I’m thinking of going the studio route for my next computer. Can you still airdrop and AirPlay with this studio computer not using the studio display? I’m looking for an alternative display to use instead. Can you recommend any display options that are 4K to use with this computer?
Benq EW3280U...32-inch, 4K, 60Hz refresh, pretty good internal speakers (two tweeters and a woofer).
I saw a new M1 max Mac Studio on costco at $1499! Great price, don't need an upgrade yet unfortunately
First time I notice your Dragon Ball figurines.. Nice!!! Vegeta all the way hahahaha
Oh, and great video as usual mate ;)
Apple always put too little flash memory in their base model iPhones and Macs. I would recommend buying the base model of the Mac Studio but with 1 or 2 Tb instead of the default none upgradable 0.5 Tb of Flash memory. One additional advantage of buying a larger SSD that I discovered is that the larger Apple SSDs are faster.
Heading straight to Apple's webstore, Imma order a Big Mac Studio...
you confused me so getting the base Mac studio with out buying the studio display is better than buying the base model Mac book pro right
How does it compare to an AMD Ryzen running a Linux distribution?
“That’s a Big Mac!!!” 😂😂😂😂😂
I have Yamaha NS-10Ms for Sound, and nice old Harman Kardon Amp', so I don't need speakers or Power. I also don't really need 5K or Siri. I have a nice old Dell right now, and a 4K trade-up is what I think I'm gonna do. And I really want 32" and I can't afford the 32" Apple... I was thinking about picking-up a LG 32UP83A-W for the Mac Studio. That will be a HUGE upgrade from my old 1080p... Whatdayathink?
How about the fan noise? Is it loud?
Since they squeezed the Max into a MacBook Pro with no thermal issues, I have to imagine that they could have squeezed it into a Mini enclosure as well. So, it's kind of interesting that they opted to put it in this chonky boy form factor instead. I imagine that the beefy cooling in there is overkill even with the aluminium instead of the copper.
Can we connect this macstudio to a cheap monitor???
If you try to put together a PC build for $2K, you can get an 11900K and RTX 3060 based system, which I believe lines up well with the base M1 MAX. There will be some things that the PC does better, in particular 3D, but other areas that the M1 MAX does better, so I think it's pretty even. That makes the base Studio, perhaps surprisingly, actually a great value. I think that falls apart once you go up to the Ultra, as you can build a 12900K with 3090 system for far less money and it would probably outperform even the 64-core Studio in enough areas that it wouldn't make much sense, unless you absolutely have to have a Mac no matter what (as opposed to me: platform agnostic).
Nope. Not even close.
Only problem is it would be a PC though… (Platform biased!)
Omg the ending 😂😂😂
Awesome ending, bro. 😂
I'm in the market but I think I'm going to build a PC this time for easy future upgrades. I do like the size of the Mac studio though.
A solid choice. I wish you luck finding the PC parts right now tho lol.
Looks like the SSD is upgradable
Yeah, this isn't the computer you get if you want to upgrade it over time. But, if you're a person looking for a pretty powerful small form factor Mac, it's an excellent choice.
@@richard6812 I hope OWC starts making and selling SSD upgrade kits for the Mac Studio! 😂
Very good, I agree that the best purchase is the base model, you get more for the money pay. I just order one along the Studio Display, after carefully looking at other ones with better specs according to some, but is the product as a whole that counts for me, a few out there with better specs but don't work as smooth as the Studio Display. All in all, I'm quite excited to get it by August 4, yay. I'm a Mac guy 100%, since I bought the McIntosh II SE in 1986, I know I'm old, ha ha. People tell me give Windows a chance, I did at one point, came to the conclusion that I hate anything with the Windows logo on it, personal opinion. As I said, this time with the base Mac Studio, is the best purchase.
Some say that a bigger storage will be better, to me it doesn't matter, I have always worked from a second hard drive, SSD now, never used a system drive for storage, external storage is best for me. Thank you for the video!
Surprisingly big box!
Is the bluetooth range and reliability better than what Mac mini has?
Yes a lot better. Haven't experienced any dropouts yet.
@@GregsGadgets Cool! Have you tried using the keyboard and trackpad from a fair distance (3 meters or more)?
it's certainly worth noting, that the READ Speed is more or less exactly the same regardless of ssd size
It's the write speed that gets a boost, with a larger ssd. and that's not really something that EVERYONE needs, and in the day to day of just opening programs etc, you will not benefit from faster write speeds. at all.
The SSD modules aren't soldered to the motherboard, they're removable! The race is on to figure out who makes the modules.
Every repair shop can desolder chips. So are they slotted or not is the question and the answer is not.
@@llothar68 The SSD is NOT soldered ....go to MAX TECH's Channel.
Luke Miani tried swapping the SSD drives between M1 Studios, doesn't work. Have to use the one shipped with the machine.
3:05 Patrick : LMAO
If you were going to spend money on upgrades, would it be GPU cores, unified memory or storage. And would the answer be different, lets say using it for gaming vs Final Cut Pro. Thanks. Yep, now I want a Big Mac maybe 2 with fries….lol
How mulch do the extra pickles cost?
Im happy to see apple coming out with a midrange machine without a monitor attached. This is the machine I’m considering, but am waiting to see how it really performs and to make sure there isn’t any hardware problems. I would have preferred if this was expandable and serviceable. Im pretty unhappy with apples anti consumer stance where it comes to their hardware and making these boxes basically e-waste.
M1 Pro would be true midrange though. Apple is kinda forcing people to buy the high end GPU with the M1 Max.
@@tomross4599 for my needs its a midrange i should have said. Ive been buying apple since 1992. Ive spent a LOT of cash for much less on machines over the years. Since my case needs are dual purpose, both music and design I need some cpu oomph and a bit of graphic oomph but the Ultra would be overkill since i can only design and use Affinity / Adobe design tools so fast. They’ll come out with whatever their Mac Pro line of machines (Not M1 pro) later this year and those will be some top line beasts. If I Was still running a motion design and animation studio(Ive owned, specced and built two over the years) id be holding out for those or pick up an M1 Ultra now. It also depends on how much after effects and 3D apps make use of the machine. For design workstations an upgraded M1 Max is fine but for Mograph some more muscle would be great. In earlier apple machines it was rarely worth getting the fastest machine because the diminishing returns on CPU speed and actual productivity’s wouldn’t justify the cost. A few seconds boost in render times doesn’t cut it. Im hoping software vendors continue to find ways to optimize software to work even better in Apple Silicon so the next Gen of machines will be groundbreaking. These are already pretty impressive.
Hey cool you’ve changed the scenery. Where’s your iMac?
Apple's high-end iPhones, iPads, and Mac laptops all support HDR, but the Studio Display tops out at 600 nits, and Apple doesn't offer an HDR mode in the software at all.
Hey Greg,
Nobody seems to have this answer.
Could you please find out for certain with what storage size we get the 7.4Gb/s speeds?
The 4TB and 8TB will give full speed.
@@lucaslonghurst That's the thing Lucas. Even Greg said it himself in the video that based on his MacBook experience, it's maybe only the 4Gb and the 8Gb, but I want to know for certain because I could consider bumping it up to 2Gb if I'm getting more speed.
I answered in the video. 4TB and 8TB get the full speed.
@@GregsGadgets That was clearly your educated GUESS, Greg.
I appreciate your response, anyway.
@@atwajesper9434 Greg is correct and I can confirm anything under the 4TB will be less than the full speed. 2TB will still be very fast though. Average is roughly 6000MB/s write and low 5000MB/s read.
This i the modern cube except the design isn’t great prefer the beautiful cube case..but it’s more powerful
Thanks for the review... however built-in monitor speakers no matter how great will still suck compared to external speakers especially when they have a subwoofer. Paying $300 more for something most won't ever use doesn't make sense.
If only they had a cheaper version with no speakers
totally agree. I feel recommending $1600 monitor for "nice" speaker is a shill move
Great video. I’ve said it a thousand times, but I really believe the explosion of videographers and photographers on UA-camrs, TikTok, instagram and Facebook changed Apple’s Mac trajectory. Content creators not only revived the Mac but cameras themselves. “Camera phones” and their digital albums put a lot of cameras in the celluloid graveyard. Apple was molding the iPad to be the artistic device.
Coooooo
True and Apple forgot music producers as a result.
@@taucetus3657 really? A lot of the popular music UA-camrs I watch use Macs
And what a shame. They've abandoned 3D artists.
I think you over estimate the decline of cameras, lower/mid level consumer grade cameras certainly took a hit, but anything high-end consumer and up never went anywhere. A phone will never truly replace a dedicated camera, it just can't replicate that level of hardware.
That unboxing…did you get fries with that?
