Electron Configurations - AP Chem Unit 1, Topic 5b

- In this video, Mr. Krug reviews the 'periodic table' method of writing electron configurations and shows how the Aufbau principle correlates with the orbital diagram notation for electron configurations. He also reviews Hund's Rule and the Pauli Exclusion Principle and discusses the shapes of atomic orbitals.
Electron configurations are like the home addresses of electrons. Levels (shells) are the cities or towns, sublevels (subshells) are the streets, and orbitals are two bedroom apartments on a street. Moreover, electrons are people who - if possible - prefer to live alone in a two bedroom apartment (Hund's rule). And electrons are like people who prefer to live closest to the inner city versus the outer part or suburbs of the city (Aufbau's principle). And the two bedrooms are split in such a way that they are 180 degree reflections of each other .
Sorry, couldn't help myself. I love analogies, they help me to remember the information.
That's a great analogy! I greatly appreciate it.
These videos will be the reason I pass ap chem
If you like what I post, tell a friend and spread the word. Thanks for watching!
thank you so much for your videos! they're super helpful
You're very welcome! Keep watching, lots more videos on the way...
Never understood AP Chemistry before watching your videos
So glad to hear that. Thanks for watching!
Hi! I have a couple questions regarding your videos (which are wonderful btw)
1. Your videos have different units and topics. Is there a textbook you are making these videos by? If not, do you recommend any textbooks for studying AP Chem?
2. Do your videos cover all of AP Chem?
3. Any tips and/or suggested material if I'm self-studying AP Chem?
Thank you so much! Have a great day!
Hi there, to answer your questions:
1. I use the official AP Chemistry Curriculum Guide for my Unit/Topic designations used by the College Board. I don't follow any specific textbook, although I do use a few for reference: the General Chemistry textbooks authored by Petrucci, Ebbing, as well Brown & Lemay are great. The OpenStax Gen Chem book is also excellent and free online!
2. Yes, these videos cover the entire AP Chem curriculum.
3. For self-studying, you can follow these videos, as well as a textbook of your choice. Work as many problems as you possibly can, esp as you get closer to the AP Chem exam date in May. I also recommend my Ultimate Review Packet for AP Chem, which will be going live next month. It has problems, study guides, full-length unit summary videos, and practice exam.
I wish you all the best in AP Chem!
@@JeremyKrug Thanks for the detailed response and the awesome videos! You're a great teacher and I've learned so much. i'll definitely be on the lookout for your ultimate review packet
watching 20 videos a day.. haha.. ap chem test in 6 days am i cooked
At 20 videos a day, which is about 4 1/2 hours per day, you'll get done just in time!
