    Though it looks nice, it is a safety hazard. You need to change the glass.
    According to the International Residential Code, all glass and panels must be tempered in these types of doors: swinging, sliding, operable, fixed, and bifold, regardless of panel size.
    The glass cut at Lowe’s is not tempered. To do the project properly and safely, order tempered glass in the appropriate customs sizes.

      This has really inspired me! I have a very dark hallway, so am thinking of cutting high level ‘lights’ in all me doors.

    Beautiful transformation however I must say two things.
    In my area in California, tempered glass is required in any door or window within 24 inches of a door. I know because my house wasn't to code when I purchased it.
    And secondly you have secured that glass so strongly with silicone moulding and glue that replacing a broken pane may be a real pain...
    I'm making these comments for people's safety not to get down on your work.
    As a homeowner you have the right to do anything in your own home.

      Just to let you know, I have two windows adjacent to a slider that were professionally installed years ago that aren't tempered glass....

    Hello Stefani, the easy way is not always the better one, in this case your work was really worth it! The doors look fantastic. And because they are dark brown and not black, they also have a much warmer appearance than black doors could. The door knobs are stunning. Great job. Greetings from cologne Andy

    You explain things really well. A lot of UA-camrs that show DIY how to videos take for granted that I already know things that I don’t know. Watching this I think I could do this right now! Love how it turned out

    I love this. I want to do this with an exterior door because my living room is so dark. I have a metal door and it is rusting here and there. I am looking to buy a solid wood exterior door and make it a french door. I am so glad you uploaded this video. I love the stain you used. It looks so beautiful in your home and is a lovely contrast. I can see beautiful pillows with a dark brown and white design that would tie the door in to the kitchen. Just beautiful.

    I think my doors are hollow. Am I SOL with trying this project?

    • @FragulRoc
      @FragulRoc Місяць тому

      @josephcelmer5756 Probably not. Mine are hollow as well. Thinking a wider width trim is needed to sandwich the glass or plexi. I also saw a block of wood is needed in the hollow bottom of the cutout to keep the insert from falling. If that makes sense.

    I'm pretty sure I've commented this before, but it's amazing how your poly doesn't dry instantaneously. I live in Arizona and have to apply poly outside (no workshop). The annual average humidity is less than 38% and it seems to dry before it even hits the surface. 😅

    you should not be gluing the glass. Wood movement can stress it and cause it to crack especially since it's so thin and brittle already. There are little padding balls that will hold it in place and allow it to move

      I have colonial home dated 1900 and we have 5 bedroom doors with solid glass panels. Its not thin glass, VERY thick and has a kind of blue hue to the glass. Not sure when it was made but all hardware is brass and door knobs glass too. I would have added a clear silicone strip/edge of glass. This would cushion glass against wood expansion and contraction.
