Scott how do you match the A7III with the GH5? What would be the best profile settings for matching? Can you use the same settings of the a6500 with the A7iii?
Been thinking about this myself as I'm contemplating picking up a 6500 as a B-cam to my Gh5 and I shoot Log whenever possible. My thinking is that you could possibly use a vlog to rec709 lut for your GH5 footage (I like to use the numbers in this video as I find they give me a more subtle rec 709 conversion: ua-cam.com/video/bnRmNQXH2Qg/v-deo.html) and then potentially use the new colour match option in Lumetri inside Premiere to match the log footage of the Sony to your Vlog footage which now has the conversion lut applied. Effectively giving you an slog to rec 709 lut for your Sony that matches the colours from the panasonic. Theoretically you could then apply a grade on another adjustment layer above these conversion luts and they should match up fairly well. You could also do the opposite as well and apply a rec 709 conversion to the Sony footage first and use Lumetri to match the Panasonic colour to the Sony colours if you prefer the look of the Sony. While I haven't tried this yet it works in theory
@@tommydogable I'm not 100% sure. I tried it using the numbers that I mentioned and that didn't work because it doesn't use lemetri to create the rec 709 so you can't export it as a lut. However if you were to use something like the leeming lut then theoretically this process could still work. Honestly I haven't tried it though because I still have two panasonic cameras...sorry
Perfect! I just got my a7iii and have gh5 as well. cant figure out if i should sell my gh5? I love it for the quality as well as ibis on long light weight lenses. I love sony for shallow dof and af. What would you do?
Thanks Scott, this is super helpful. I really appreciate that your approach is to start with matching to your most used camera, in camera as best as possible BEFORE filming.
It's huge. If you try to match it in post, it's too late. If it baked in too many contrast, saturation or anything else extreme then it's too late to fix it.
sure, we are shooting a wedding on A7Rii and GH5 this weekend. Was trying to find a profile that would match for the occasion. So do you think A7Rii would be identical in terms of picture profile as A6500?
Thanks Scott! I really struggle with matching my GH5 Natural profile (-5, 0, -4, -2, -1) footage with my Mavic 2 Pro footage. Any tips or suggestions. As you also use Drone footage I guess sometimes you will have to match 3 camera profiles.
Hi Scott, Thanks for the video, I have a question out of curiosity, I want to get an X-T3 for photography but I want it to be used as a second camera for B-Roll with the BMP as a main camera, do you think you can Match colorgrade between them?
Never used that camera so I can't say for sure, but I think any camera can be matched. The key is similar to this video, getting it as close to possible IN CAMERA
Black level on the Sony + or -9, in the video I see you have it at 0. I have a A7iii and a Lumix G85 I am trying to match. I also have a $44 Datacolor chip chart from amazon I am playing around with.
I followed the description and set it to 9 and wound up with terrible looking footage coming out of the A6500. Blacks were completely crushed and it performed like a potato in low light... Change the black level settings on the A6500 to get more dynamic range out of the shadows or you'll struggle in post!
Thanks for the video! You've helped me so much! Although I have a question not video related. How were you able to setup the resolution of your LG monitor to work on your Mac? I have the same monitor but I've not been using because I'm not able to set up the proper resolution.
Are you running it through a dock? When I try running it through my dock, It does not work with the correct resolution. But if I run it directly from the computer to HDMI it works perfect
Oh :( yes... I have an older macbook model with thunderbolt. I do not have the built in HDMI port like newer models do. I have to use an adapter (Thunderbolt > HDMI).
I recently shot a corporate job in HDR on the GH5 and used a A7R Sii for B camera. The ninja inferno made it very easy to determine how I wanted everything to look, so I did something very similar to what you did, but the extra added contrast/brightness/color/everything range made it quite hard to do. I recommend for shooting HDR it must be shot on the same equipment, other than that this is on point! Maybe doing a small tutorial on how you match them in post would be nice, I think that's the most important with these two cameras. The differences in color ranges I believe they are big.
If the profiles are close, it's very easy to match in post because they are already nearly the same. It's all about the in camera for me. I have no problems in post if done in camera.
Scott McKenna Hi, yes, I agree. But my issue is if I am doing with one camera HDR (GH5 + Ninja Inferno -Log) and then I have to manage another codec (not log or it wont look the same, when I use the A7R Sii . I have to change from Slog to cinema or something else so that I can better match the HDR from the GH5. I tried it a few times and gave up. The added range makes the Sony look dull. Not much difference here in UA-cam since there is no HDR. But when we put the footage back into the ninja inferno or an HDR television, it seemed that I had completely missed the colors. Even though everything looked the same on the iMac 5K I use for editing. I haven’t got any more requests as of yet to do more HDR, but I might be shooting a short film this summer and I am planning on using GH5 and GH5s (if it comes out in time) for low light w/gimbal. I agreed to do the 4K HDR 60fps 10bit 4:2:2 because I though it was cool (Client in tech) I find it completely unnecessary unless you are shooting for TV or movies specifically, but it was so so expensive. Managing the file size was and has been horrible. Even though I made money, next time I am charging an extra premium for the format.
This is great advice. My first wedding was shot on my Gh5 and a t5i. We forgot to change the t5i settings.....Canon naturwl profile and Gh5 cine D are hard to match in post. 😂😂
Very helpful... thanks! I shoot with a GH4 and wondering if our second camera that we purchase should be a Sony, just for the autofocus and low light work on a gimbal that you mentioned. This makes me less nervous to try to match cameras.
Quick question, which colour profile did you choose on the Sony? Can I choose any and then use your settings?
I have two GH5's and on is yellow/green compared to the other. both in Natural color. Any clues for me?
Scott how do you match the A7III with the GH5? What would be the best profile settings for matching? Can you use the same settings of the a6500 with the A7iii?
On the a7iii, I have a custom profile. I'll share some more settings on it soon.
Scott McKenna yes, pls!
I'd want this too~,
well Im using same profile has 6500, it isnt that bad, but needs little work
Matching GH5 to A7 III? This would be a dream combo if you have any tips on how to do this
I’m about to buy both of these cameras. Have you found anyone that has given some good starting places?
Hey Scott, what about log. I shoot with the a6300 and just got a gh5s. Is the process adjusting log footage pretty much the same?

should i do awb or how does white balance work?
Hi, do you have settings for A7III matching with GH5 ? Thank you for you vidéos !
I'll work on a video soon.
Hey Scott, have u had the time to match the gh5 to a73 yet?
Any updates?
Im here for the same! not the same for de a6500 + gh5?
@@scottmckenna PLEASE!!

Did you match these two cameras with the settings for filming? I did and they look very different. Greetings from Germany.
I’m in literally the same position. Did you figure this out??
@@gustavfrankecinematography do you guys? im in the same!

Thank You! I am a proud GH5 owner but I am looking into getting a Sony for low light and shallow DOF.
Hi, and for the A7III ? Happy new year man !!
do you think this setting will work on Sony A7Rii as well? also which PP settings are in the description?
Yes, it's all about matching by eye.
sure, we are shooting a wedding on A7Rii and GH5 this weekend. Was trying to find a profile that would match for the occasion. So do you think A7Rii would be identical in terms of picture profile as A6500?
Identical, NO. Closer? Yes.

As long as I shoot in Cinelike or Log on the drones, I have no problem matching.
Alright, I'll give it another go. Thanks again :)
Hi Scott, do you fancy sharing the custom profile you setup to match to the GH5 nature? Thanks man
Search my channel for my GH5 settings. That has the settings that I use.
Hey Scott! Love your videos and the fact that you shared the settings in the description! Sets u apart man, keep it up
Thanks my friend
Do you sharp your footage in post? I ask because you have -7 on detail for the a6500
No.
Thank you

Great job on the video, make more vids Dude. It gives anyone shooting with different cameras a great starting point.
I've been searching for this topic so thank you for creating this video. Good work!
Glad it's what you were looking for.
Nice to see you back. Great video thank you

Doing great man, thanks for saying hello.
I can see you with the A7RIII. Perfect hybrid for your photo/video needs.
Not positive right now. Overheating issues are a major problem with high megapixel.
excellent advice thank you.

sometime the LCD color isn't reliable either

I don't like Sony but that Rig is good looking with the extra grip. 🙂
It does look good with the Rig, I agree. It;s easier to use and hold too since it's not so small
Scott McKenna for a moment I thought it was a Panasonic gx85. Do you use battery grips?
