You teach in away that make me understand everything that is happening and why, unlike the rest of the channels on UA-cam that make me feels like I'm following blindly with no idea what or why I am doing it haha Thank you so much.
Grazie Ermanno! Mi permetto di scriverti in italiano per ringraziarti dell'ottimo lavoro. Grazie a te sono riuscito ad installare Arch su un vecchio Macbook del 2010 e a cominciare ad usare Linux. Continua così!
u are the best :* i searching long time tutorial like that without downloading config from git like others or they starting in costomized i3 and they are thinking its help new people.. very good job
Switched back to Arch with KDE from Manjaro KDE because of your video's and enjoying it. I now reserved one of my ThinkPad's to start messing with i3 too, very cool video's, thanks a lot.
If anyone is having trouble with the backlighting on your keyboard or the screen brightness controls on your keyboard (particularly for laptops), I have found a way that works wonderfully, even without XOrg. I use the Light package from the Community repository (although it is available through other distros repos). It is a replacement for xbacklight, which is what most of the help you find recommends. Install the package, add yourself to the Video group (sudo usermod -aG video [user]), and restart your system. You may need to play around with the different devices (light -L) to determine which ones control the keyboard backlight and screen brightness (light -Ss "path" 20). Once that is done, add these keybindings to your .config/i3/config file; here is mine for example: # Keybinding for Brightness
Thank you for doing this video! Extremely helpful! I cannot get feh to work at all, so I'll just figure out how to get nitrogen to load every boot. Feh seems like it installed, and the --help shows everything, but the command in the config just won't show anything. I don't consider it all that important though so will keep going with everything else.
I know this is already 2 years old but it is by far one of the better tutorials on UA-cam. I also actually used the instructions for installing it on parallels to help me install it on VMware fusion. However, I can’t get the transparency to work with picom. Is there something I’m missing?
Hi Ermanno, at 19:25, you don't need to sudo to copy something from /etc/ into ~ just an unprivileged cp will do it, that way you don't need to chown the file, as it becomes yours :)
Ermanno, I really enjoy your tutorials, although I don't always get the same result as you. I was curious as to how you pasted the ascii information from the Font Awesome Cheat Sheet in vim. I previously used nano, but wanted to use vim for the syntax highlighting. I can't figure out how to paste the glyph into the i3 config file. Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated.
Hi William, I pasted the content by entering insert mode in vim and hitting shift+insert on the keyboard. If the glyphs don't appear correctly they usually will after you install the fonts and reboot the machine.
@@eflinux Ermanno, thanks for that - it works perfectly! I already had the font loaded, and when I pasted it in the config file, it showed up perfectly.
fine!! It really could more practical then xfce I use now. If you config a lot of. And that bring me to the next question. Where is the differnce between i3 & dwm?
i3 is just a wm it doesn't have a DE, this gets problematic when using tools like teamviewer or other remote control apps .Can you show or give an alternative for this situation. Thanks for the video
dude you should have more than 6.65K i mean ...your content is updated its from the scratch like you don't presume we have gnome or plasma and all .....Could you make one for vim like how to set it up for C++ or something like that
Hey! There’s been a couple of months since I started to use Arch. Can’t you remove a package with its dependencies via “pacman -Rs” ? Is there any reason to use yay? (3:08)
Hi Ermanno! I've tested i3+Polybar @ KVM on my production machine (Arch) and everything worked like a charm. When I've installed the same i3-Polybar configuration @ my production machine Spotify crashed and the desktop freezed. Reboot. Any tip? Thanks in advance :-) [the Arch linux installation under KVM @ my production machine is a "clone" of my production machine]
Ermanno can you get super key and a number like super key 1 for firefox as an example. How can you set up the key binding to use super and a number in i3 , if not can you do an intro to qtile perhaps.
I love your tutorials they are really good but I am just going to give up on installing arch linux because I het so many errors all the time and it crashes every 5 minutes. I dont know why. I will probably try installing it again in a few months

I see. In this case download the "arandr" package and configure your displays with that. Then save the configuration. It will be saved as a script in the .screenlayout directory. Make the script executable and add it to your config file.
I well recommend to use time stance in videos like this it would be much easy to get perfect point
Great part 2 video for i3, well done, always a joy to watch your full details videos, well done Ermanno.

Easy to follow and understand. Best video about i3 I've seen so far. Earned a subscriber, sir.
This config file reminds me of my Quake 2 days back in the day. This is very informative!
Glad it helped!

bindsym XF86MonoBrightnessUp exec light -As "sysfs/backlight/auto" 10
bindsym XF86MonoBrightnessDown exec light -Us "sysfs/backlight/auto" 10
bindsym XF86KbdBrightnessUp exec light -As "sysfs/led/smc::kbd_backlight" 10

After, add acpi_backlight=vender to the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= line of /etc/default/grub and then # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg. Reboot and it should work.
Perfect
Excelent as always
Thanks again!
Wow, you explain everything so clearly thank you very much.

Great content dude ^^, will you show us the customization of a polybar ?
Yes, it's on the list :) don't know yet when though.

(18:48) you didn't' t have to use sudo. The files in /etc can be read by any user

Good point. Ti be honest with you, in such a scenario I'd use Flatpaks.
good video, btw why did u choose to use feh instead of nitrogen
I used nitrogen in other videos. I like use both in different videos :)
I don't know why but when I tried transparent background it didn't work. All other thing worked perfectly. Please advise.
You have to make sure the compositor starts with the window manager. Look that the compositor is executed in the config file.
how to increase mouse size??
i want to make it bigger
Have a look at this thread: www.reddit.com/r/i3wm/comments/8ix88z/how_can_i_change_the_mouse_cursor_size/

i people have problem with taring using picom the experimental flag fixed it for me using integrated intel graphics.

I think it was clipit, but im not 100% sure, sorry...:)

Ermanno can you get super key and a number like super key 1 for firefox as an example. How can you set up the key binding to use super and a number in i3 , if not can you do an intro to qtile perhaps.
You can define it, but then you have to modify the default keybinding for that.

Definitely! You can experiment with keybindings, but I suggest to always have a backup ready :)
