Hi Alex, this series is unbelievably impressive, probably on of the best tutorials I've ever seen on youtube. I was thinking about switching from unity to i3 and this one really convinced me to switch and right now I'm playing with i3 in virtualbox to set everything up. Thanks for that!
This is really a great tutorial (including part 1 and 2) not only for customizing i3wm, in which excels, but also to understand the way that almost everything Linux-related works (bash scripting, customizing, config files, ecc) You could watch this tutorial even if you didn't care about i3wm customizing at all, just because it explains to you lots of other basic things that are fundamental for the way that Linux, but more generally, computer OSes work. Truly an amazing piece of content.
Just dropping by to say this is one of the best linux related tutorial videos. Straight forward, explained everything he does, great content overall. Actually thought I was on Udemy or something. Thank you for these videos
Your video series may be seven years old, but you cover everything I wanted to know, and you explain everything very well. This is the way all video tutorials should be structured in my opinion. I was actually able to follow along and begin to configure my system as I want it. Thank you!
I have used linux as my primary os for years in the past, and I work as/with IT instructors for multiple training facilities. I have to say... This is one of the best instructional video series I have ever seen. Thank you for posting this. This is what the linux community needs.
Truly, your command of the material is impressive. I run PC-BSD and had been "content" with fluxbox for several years till I found your video series. Perhaps it was my long standing love affair with TMUX, but with no more than a superficial comprehension of the concepts behind my first pass through your in depth tutorial, I was enticed to try out i3wm. Very glad I did. I've been able to apply most of your very good suggestions to PC-BSD and you provided enough insight into the brilliance of Michael's creation to adapt what was needed to my favorite, real UNIX platform. Thank you!
I love your teaching style, the way you explain things is very intuitive. This tutorial series is probably the best I have ever seen on youtube. I definitely will recommend your videos in the future
I'm not entirely new to ricing or custom WMs in general. I've been an awesome WM user for a year now on my Arch Linux laptop. Every time I decided to give i3 a try I'd hit some sort of roadblock that would really annoy me and I'd just give up. But thanks to your casts, which I've avidly watched, i3 is finally no stranger to me and I must admit I've fallen in love with it. I've been using KDE Plasma on the desktop I've watched your videos from for a few months now but oh boy those days are over! i3 FTW! Congratulations on one of the best ricing tutorials I've seen!
Clear speech, links and timestamps in description, good audio and video quality, informative content. Has science gone too far? Thanks man, you're doing a great job.
I'am not a daily Linux user, I don't know much about it and I loved i3wm. Your videos taught me a lot. Aspecially these series made me comprehend many things about linux ecosystem. Thank you!
Wow. That was one hell of a ride. I'm glad you didn't shorten it for the sake of being brief, I think it really was necessary and it made jumping into i3 a LOT less intimidating. The pacing was great as well, going through a lot of things very quickly so I could have an overview, then just rewatch any bits that gave me trouble. Keep up the good work man, you did a phenomenal job and I'm very grateful that there are content creators like you out there!
Watched all your Videos about the i3wm. You are truly a wonderful teacher. Exactly the right pace for a newbie like me. Great work! You helped me a lot! Thank you very much :)
Thank you for this amazing 3 part series! This is absolutely the best guide I have found online to date. I have used i3 before, and I was able to get it to look pretty nice, but this is so much better! Keep the videos coming!
The San Francisco font you were looking for is SFNS Display. Although, I would posit that over 6 years later, you probably know that by now. Your i3 tutorials by the way - the best there are, hands down.
Absolutely the best course on i3 I have ever seen. It made me switch to i3 and I’m loving it. One thing I don’t understand though is how you get your virtual machines running perfectly in i3. On my computer virtualbox makes my vm just a little tiny box. On the internet I read that i3 does not support virtualbox well. Until now I have not found a solution that works. BTW, you’re a natural born teacher. Thank you very much.
Great tutorial series. Actually, the best information on i3wm in video format I could find. The work put in to these tutorials really shows, from great editing to subtle things like great description of videos. Thank you!
Definitely the best series of I3 videos anywhere! Clear and concise instructions. You may have convinced me to switch! I have been bouncing back and forth between XFCE and KDE Plasma mostly because of their awesome dual monitor support. Other WM's support having 2 monitors but they have no means of individual control which I insist on. I think XFCE has the best dual monitor support, even better than MS. I want to find out how I3 handles dual monitors as I am very interested in switching to it. Thanks for your hard work, you have done a great service to the community! PS, one thing I3 has going for it that I don't hear anyone mention, and that is that it is a new and innovative way to control a computer, NOT a copy of MS or MAC interfaces. I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone wants their Linux to look and behave like Windows. Peace out
+Rick Haskin Well, one of the nice things about i3 is that, you can configure windows to open on certain workspaces, and configure those workspaces to open on certain monitors. This fine-grained control will allow you to make multiple monitors behave how *you* want. As someone who transitioned from Windows, it's not _that_ surprising to me that people want a familiar desktop environment. As much as I like i3, I don't think it's necessarily for everyone...
+Code Cast I agree something like this would never be for everyone. I've been using Linux since '97 and I am still hesitant, but I am not afraid of it, I am just not sure that it fits my workflow. I would really like to see someone develop new and different window manager that would still be easy to use. Someday perhaps
These videos finally got me around to check off an item on my to-do list, namely replacing KDE with i3 as my window manager / desktop environment. Thanks!
I started using i3 a little after this set of three videos were posted. The first two were really helpful to me but I never made it to the third one, until today. That was an awesome explanation for i3, and much more and probably one of the best explanations on any tool I've seen on the web.
I just wanted to say thank you! I've been reading about i3wm for the last few months since I first saw these videos. I finally made the jump yesterday and have implemented a lot of what you have covered in this video series and my desktop looks awesome now :) Thanks again :)
Simply, an AMAZING series of videos! Both in quality of the presentation but also in the content. I just realised that the main issue with i3wm is not how to use it (it's really simple and natural to go on with it) but how to make it elegant and configure it so that it looks beautiful. Congratulations for presenting these interesting parts of the window manager!
+Christos Kontas Thanks for the kind words, Christos. Yes, I agree. There's actually a community distribution of Manjaro Linux that comes with i3wm and much more opinionated settings. In my experience, it can decrease the time to get up and running with i3wm significantly.
I can't express how great I think this series is. You're such a pro. This should be on the i3 website, and they should be paying you! (assuming i3 has actual revenue, which I kind of doubt)
+Ben Berman I don't think they should be paying me haha, I really appreciate the compliment, though. I did notice that i3 have a _"screencasts"_ section on their website. It would be awesome to be featured there!
Hey mate, just wanted say a big thank you for these 3 videos. Most of it is still relevant in 2018 and it helped me a lot getting started with i3, which I really like. They are clear and cover a lot in a relatively short amount of time. Thanks a lot!
I'd like to really thank you for the quality of your series on i3! I was looking to improve my Linuxbox workflow, I knew something about dwm but I was scared that such a change would have been too difficult, too drastic and also would have lead to an incredible ugly desktop. By watching your series, I completely changed my mind and I think I will make the switch to i3. I like its customisability and your very crisp clear explanations helped me a lot to understand how to get around and how to make the swith really painless. I think that such a combination of beauty and usefulness is very rare to find. So, again, compliments and thnk you for the effort!
I have now watched all the videos in the series. I went from knowing nothign about window managers and i3 in particular to switching from Gnome to i3 fulltime. Thanks to you, my desktop looks WAY better, I get better performance, and my productivity increases significantly. Thanks a lot! I'm having a look on Polybar which seems to provide a kickass status bar alternative :D PS: compton is pure joy
I am here to express the most *sincere* appreciation for the INCREDIBLE knowledge that you shared with us through your video series. Your guidance has enhanced my passion for #customization within the Linux environment. In closing I can't thank you enough for producing a screencast to explain the power and value of the i3wm Window Manager. Can't wait to dive into this area of expertise for Linux.
I just watched all 3 videos of this series and I had to take a moment to comment, and specially to thank you for the great work you did. Really appreciated.
This really helped me in learning how to use i3. I have gotten a bit frustrated with all the other window managers, and this was a breath of fresh air! Thanks!
Thank you so much Alex, my i3 desktop looks amazing now :) I finally found my final DE after insane amounts of distro hopping. This even beats the stability and minimalistic feel of MacOS for me.. :D I use arch btw
Thanks for these 3 i3 videos. Because of these, I installed i3 and really am enjoying a more productive desktop due to the lack of visual clutter. Great window manager and great tutorial.
"Excuse me, excuse me" You seem know how I'm paying attention to your demonstration. : ) My summer is going to be more interesting when I decide to use i3 instead of gnome DE. Thank you so much for your nice "rice" tutorial.
5 years later and I'm testing i3, using this series as a starting guide. Fantastic interface for home working during Corona2020, just need to figure out how to log off in Mint 19.3 Mate but not really essential. Excellent tutorials by the way.
10/10 Tutorial. I started with Awesome WM and gave up quickly as it was a daunting thing to get into. This has made things so clear to understand with i3. Thanks for the help and continue the good work. Subscribed.
I know this video is old but I would really like to say that I appreciate this video series very much! You helped me learn the ins and outs of i3 and now I'm working on customization. Originally I used an i3 themer script from github for awhile but now I have deleted it and am following the instructions on this video. I like that I can use your pre-configured settings, but do so in a way that teaches me how to customize it on my own.
Absolutely amazing tutorials, I am not even on my permanent computer, just had some time to kill and ended up going through the whole thing. Nice work!
Thanks for this series. I've been wanting to get into a tiling window manager for ages and liked the look of i3. I read through the documentation and started tinkering but noticed your videos linked on their site. Very well done, really clear and helped me get started. Also, considering I've been using Linux only at home for years now and Arch is my main distribution, for some reason I've never dived into vim or anything similar and have just been clunking around in standard editors such as nano. Changed that now having seen this and learning a lot more. I've subscribed and will definitely be watching more.
When I'm wandering around UA-cam and considering which desktop environment to use (because I got sick with unity in LTS16.04) I've come over to your i3 part one video.. Damn yes you sold me out..
##### ROFI THEME FIX ##### Besides the change of input format, it seems that for some reason, the calls to rofi inside the i3wm config file do not work properly, at least it didn't for me. I found a workaround though: just create a new script. Paste the following rofi command (I tried to mimic the Code Cast's theme as close as I could): #!/bin/sh bg_color=#2f343f text_color=#f3f4f5 htext_color=#9575cd rofi -show run -lines 3 -eh 2 -width 100 -padding 400 -opacity "85" -bw 0 -color-window "$bg_color, $bg_color, $bg_color" -color-normal "$bg_color, $text_color, $bg_color, $bg_color, $htext_color" -font "System San Francisco Display 16" Then just save the file wherever you want, give it a name and make it executable. Now just call the script that you just made from the i3wm config file. It should resemble something like this: bindsym $mod+d exec /path/where/you/saved/the/script/scriptName
Awesome tutorial series. Very well put together, you speak clearly and as a complete i3 noobie I now know how to configure it how I want. This gave me a giant boost of knowledge that will help me when trying to change other parts of i3 if I want to. Thank you!
Thank you very much for making this tutorial sharing information and your time to make the videos. We can see that you put effort on this, not only showing how it works but giving a complete explanation. Very good material. Greetings from Brazil.
I am working with Linux quite some time but just today I stumbled upon i3. At first it had my curiosity but after watching this series it has my attention. The pacing of those three videos is just perfect and therefore the least I can do is giving three thumbs up. Too bad I am more or less forced to run a distribution where installing new software usually isn't just an 'apt-get' away.
Thank you very much ,watched all three vids, it has been the best and detailed explanation of a window manager i have ever seen, hope to see more of these tutorials . Good Luck
i m watching this video 4 years later and it is still the most accurate on UA-cam thanks 👍👍👍👍
5 years and still is awesome!?🤩🤩
same
indeed
Surely because I'm watching it after six years and I still agree with you..

When I'm wandering around UA-cam and considering which desktop environment to use (because I got sick with unity in LTS16.04) I've come over to your i3 part one video.. Damn yes you sold me out..
the best tutorial I've ever seen for anything
Congrats for this useful, clear and complete tutorial. Your skills in i3 and in teaching are just great!
Have you considered making more UA-cam videos, especially related to programming languages? I would even pay to learn from you, you're just that good.
+De_stroyed CS:GO I will *absoloutely* be producing some more programming-related videos in the near future. Thanks for the compliment 😂.
Code Cast Thank you so much!
##### ROFI THEME FIX #####
Besides the change of input format, it seems that for some reason, the calls to rofi inside the i3wm config file do not work properly, at least it didn't for me. I found a workaround though: just create a new script. Paste the following rofi command (I tried to mimic the Code Cast's theme as close as I could):
#!/bin/sh
bg_color=#2f343f
text_color=#f3f4f5
htext_color=#9575cd
rofi -show run -lines 3 -eh 2 -width 100 -padding 400 -opacity "85" -bw 0 -color-window "$bg_color, $bg_color, $bg_color" -color-normal "$bg_color, $text_color, $bg_color, $bg_color, $htext_color" -font "System San Francisco Display 16"
Then just save the file wherever you want, give it a name and make it executable. Now just call the script that you just made from the i3wm config file. It should resemble something like this:
bindsym $mod+d exec /path/where/you/saved/the/script/scriptName
Thank you kind sir!
Thanks a million
opacity doesnt work, someone know why?
Same here, the opacity doesn't work for me either
I almost wasted an hour looking for a way around. Thanks for posting this.
just watched all 3 vids of this series. Thank you so much for this awesome work!!! =)
+Julian Rolfes Intense! Thanks so much for watching.
Awesome tutorial series. Very well put together, you speak clearly and as a complete i3 noobie I now know how to configure it how I want. This gave me a giant boost of knowledge that will help me when trying to change other parts of i3 if I want to. Thank you!
I appreciate how you explained why some things didn't work and how to fix them - thanks for teaching us how to fish :)
Great set of instructions for i3. I used these videos to jump start my i3 window manager learning.
Thanks!
6 years later, great work!!
Dude, this really made my day. REALLY looking forward to ricing tomorrow. It's... kind of late right now.
Thank you very much for making this tutorial sharing information and your time to make the videos. We can see that you put effort on this, not only showing how it works but giving a complete explanation. Very good material.
Greetings from Brazil.
You explain things very, very well. Thank you for this series of videos.
+Joel Trottier-Hébert Thanks, Joel :)
Wow, this series is just amazing! Every tutorial should be like this :D
Thanks for the awesome jump start with i3. This made my Saturday morning.
Good Luck
Watched all three videos.
Definitely worth the time. Thanks a heap!
+asdfg wert 😀😀
Thank you for the 3 videos! I just started to use i3wm (in fact, there is just a week ago). And your video helped me a lot. Thank you!
Thank you, this series help me a lot!!
I migrated from Windows 10 to Arch Linux with i3-wm.
Rodrigo Stuchi yeah that's really good idea. Arch is the best.
Thanks for making this series, really nice introduction to i3 and the surrounding ecosystem with great pointers to rofi, i3blocks, etc. Thank you! :)
+Markus Lachinger You're welcome, Markus. I appreciate you taking the time to comment.

+Dean Groves Thanks 😀
