Thank you. My girlfriend is totally blind, and I decided that I would start whittling things for her as gifts. This is a perfect starter project.
Lovely idea
@@Federico.Lonardi Thank you. She's a gem!
That's so cute dude :)
I guess I'm just a wholesome guy. LOL!@@ThatOnnline
I tried whittling a while ago when my therapist suggested to find a hobby. I recently got intrested in it again, and I followed this tutorial. The first few came out terribly but the last ones came out Great! This helped me more than you know. So, thank you! Keep it up!
I'm so happy you found the video enjoyable and helpful in more ways than one!
Sometimes you just have to do a few carvings to get the motor functions down. I started stone carving and whittling myself from a suggestion from a self care coach. It is a great way to just relax and focus on just your own little world and have something physical to show off, regardless of how it turns out. I usually find the strange looking and imperfect carvings have the most character and end up being some of my favorites.
I just carved this as a gift for my mom, we love cats XD thank you. Wonderful video and energy!
Thank you!
I love cats too, my two lil buggers are always asking me for attention, or food, sometimes both.
9:00am I’m blessed with your teaching style. I’m right brain and “normal" doesn’t work for me. I’m heavy handed so small projects are good for me. Thanks for your encouragement
I love this tutorial! The cat came out super well. And my freind loves it!
Thanks, and I'm glad your friend likes it :)
I really wanted to whittle and this helped me a lot.
am gonna make one and give this to my friend, he loves cats
Very easy to follow tutorial. Great job! Keep up the good work !
Thanks!
You are the bob Ross of wood
You're welcome!
That was so relaxing to watch.

Amazing tutorial!
Thanks!
Good stuff man can’t wait for my bass wood to get in to try this
Thanks and have fun!!
Awsome vid very easy to follow keep it up! 👍
Thanks, glad you liked it!
Thanks Brian. I am follower of your blog, very very interesting
Howdy! Hopefully you are finding the information useful!
I love this
Thank you!
Super cute...I don't suppose I can encourage you to do a video on how to carve miniatures, like furniture for a doll house? It's worth asking..I always wish I could do little table legs and stuff because it would be much more satisfying to make them myself. Also decorative miniature mouldings. There is one guy on UA-cam who does miniatures but he is really good and I just want to learn the basics.
That is a thought, I would have to practice making some myself! I'm sure there is some little nuances that I will have to learn and understand to be able to make them properly without breaking.
Very good thank you
You're welcome!
I like it
thank you for helping me
Thank you :D
we have a cat named issac who has quite a long snout, which just adds to his cutness. also beside basswood, what other types of wood would work for whittling. i like to use what i can get from our property, the types i use the most are pine, maple, walnut, and locust. not to mention the wood that the river brings with it.
Personally I like to use softer woods like pine, basswood, and butternut for whittling. Harder woods are fine, they just take longer to whittle and wear out the tools faster.
@@CarvingisFun well my dad tends to get some hard pine wood, i tried to use a two by four to try and make a cockpit for a model plane i gutted.
and i found out the hard way carving hard pine is a pain in the neck. so i gave up and ordered some balsa wood blocks, considering the plane is made of balsa wood. other then that i make handles for broken tools, shovels, hammers etc using the trees that grow on our property.
anyway thanks for the answer, i love your work.
This a good first project. Is it normal to mess up a lot? I messed up so much.
Yes it is, learning to whittle takes some practice but you will improve over time.
Dont worry about perfection, sometimes its the imperfections that make a carving unique.
hello! great tutorial, I haven’t tried it yet because I need a few more supplies. What type of glove are you wearing? like is there anything specific it is made out of? I am looking into getting a protective glove
I reccomend a slice resistant glove. The ones from dexfit or andanda are good quality gloves and provide protection from accidental cuts
I like the left side pic.
Thanks! I was hoping it would be helpful.
Hello my name is Matteo De Vito and I am good at carving wood and I want to learn from you how to do what you can do
Hi Matteo! I put all of my tutorials, tips, and product recommendations here on youtube. Just check out my channel and you should find everything you need.
Do you have a tutorial on how to carve a frog?
Not yet, but it is on my list to do :)
@@CarvingisFun can't wait. I need to carve for an upcoming bday this june ❤️😊
Awesome! Do you know if you can whittle wood that you find fresh from the forest like Pine? How would you prepare the wood? Thanks!
Hi! Whittling with fresh wood, also known as green wood, is doable and sometimes much easier to do! the moisture in the wood sometimes makes it easier to cut into and can make for a more enjoyable experience. I commonly see people who whittle spoons say they just cut the branch from the tree, carve the spoon, and let it dry afterwards.
A couple things of note with my experienced in carving pine. The wood grain is a bit course and can change direction, making it a bit harder to whittle at times. Plus, depending on the pine itself, the density can change from ring to ring and you may run across some issues with layers of sap/resin in the wood gumming up the blade.
I personally don't enjoy whittling pine as much, mostly when wet as it can easily deform and start to split once it dries. I personally would let pine dry before whittling, but others I have done fresh, like oak, hickory, and magnolia, were quite enjoyable to whittle while green.
Carving is Fun thanks for your response! So you mean that, even though oak is a hardwood and usually would be very tough to whittle when dried, it doesn’t ,alter when it is fresh or green because it’s softer then? Also, how long would I need to leave pine to dry if I were to use it?
Typically, from my experiences, oak is a bit easier to whittle while green as the moisture still in the wood makes it a bit softer. Still, oak is a bit tougher to whittle than basswood or pine :) I have also had success soaking dried wood to make it softer as well.
You don't have to let the pine dry, but I have seen larger cuts start cracking as it dries while carving and that can be frustrating. It isn't the best option for wood carving but I have seen some people do amazing stuff with them.
Carving is Fun awesome, thanks. I’ll head out to the forest tomorrow and then my whittling kit will arrive by Tuesday, so I’ll let you know how it works out.

Yes it is the same size as the dog :)
Which knife are you using in this vid?
That is a Beavercraft Roughing Knife, Model C16. It was part of Beavercrafts beginner chip carving and whittling kit, Model S15. For details, check out my complete review video here: ua-cam.com/video/Sxk-jtPs38o/v-deo.html

Howdy!
Of the woods listed, Black Willow (Salix nigra) will be your best bet.
You can determine how easy wood is to work with by finding its Janka Hardness. Basswood has a hardness of 1.8kN, Black Willow has a hardness of 1.6kN. The other woods listed are 3kN or more.
Hello ! thank you for your very helpful answer. I forgot to mention maple. But above all point out that the wood to be carved is no longer green. and is almost dry for a year or even two.
I believe the janka hardness test is primarily done with dried wood, but I remember reading in their testing papers that for each 1% moisture level it can change the janka hardness by 16kN
Also, Maple is about twice as hard or more than basswood depending on the species
How do you cut in it so cleanly
I use super sharp knives :)
What kind of wood do you use and where can i get it?
I am using basswood and have been buying it on ebay from someome called "quality lumber"
Search on ebay for 1" x 1" x 4" basswood carving blocks.

What wood do you use?
I'm using air dried basswood
yes, the smaller more detailed cuts would work best with the thinner knives but I was trying to use a regular knife for the whole project for the video.
the yellow block is honing compound and is meant to be put on a leather strop to hone the blade sharp. It is equivalent to a 3000 grit stone.
@@CarvingisFun
Can you still make it without a proper whittling knife?
I'm sure you could, just need to make sure it is sharp!
Okay thank you so much!! I love your videos by the way! Take care!
not sure if this is just me but doing this hurts my neck like hell because i always end up hunched over like gollum haha
I hear ya, sometimes I catch myself hunched over my work too.
What kind of knife r u using????
That is a beavercraft roughing knife

At what spots are the lines made? I can’t really tell. It would be nice if you wrote them down or made a plan.
Yep, this was one the the things I have started adding to my more recent videos as it is more helpful. I have plans on updating some of these with better info.
When I get the chance, Ill add the plans to my website
@@CarvingisFun thank you for communicating with the community so much good sir
Bonjour,
Yes, this was one of my first videos I made and it needs improvement. I plan on making an updated version in the future.
what knives do you use?
I currently use flexcut, beavercraft, OCC and Helvie tools.
@@CarvingisFun cool I have beavercraft knives but I read somewhere that they aren't as good as other knives so just wondering if I should upgrade the knives or something cause your cuts are so much smoother than mine
Beavercraft are the best of the "affordable" knives but no they arent as good as the more expensive options. If you want a solid step up from beavercraft, flexcut will be your next best easy to find option.
@@CarvingisFun awesome thanks alot
I find this really hard to follow.
I see a gloved hand holding this piece of wood and lots of moving around but for tgose of us just starting out it can be very hard to decipher whats going on where.
Yep, this was one of my first videos doing this. I'll make sure to keep your feedback in mind on future videos.
no measurements?? i don't do guessing
Yep, I realized after making the video that people like exact measurements. Since I rarely measure any of my carvings when outlining them I had to refine my process to be easier to follow.
Newer tutorials have measurements and templates :)
I like the project, but am pissed off by your minor description skills. @ minute 3 . 4 . 5 where is the front, the sides, every cut can be on either of the 4 sides. Pfffff.
Yep, but considering it was one of my first videos and was filmed at 2am it was still okish. I learned plenty from maken the video and felt that I have improved significantly since then. That being said Im always trying to improve at least one thing I didn't like about the last video.
This is a really hard tutorial to follow. I cant see what youre doing at all and you dont explain it well
Thanks for the feedback! Looking back at the video, I think some of the issues you experienced were caused by my bulky gloves and camera angles. Plus, I was doing it all from memory instead of writing it down, which can hinder one from teaching effectively.
I'll do my best to improve these types of videos in the future to create a better experience for those of you watching.
carvingisfun.com/whittle-a-cat/ has written how to as well
@@CarvingisFun Not to be contrarian to Laura, as we all see the world differently, while there were a few points I would have liked a better view, I do think the tutorial was still easy to follow. I started and stopped multiple times along the way to replicate what you did and didn't have much trouble. My whittling creative "decision" turned my cat in to a rather sly looking fox! But as you said, it's all about fun!
Just wanted to let you know I've only recently begun whittling/carving but I've learned a great deal through your videos. Including the need for only a strop on many knives out of the box (AFTER destroying the blade of my new knife when I took it to task on my whet stones like I would all my "from the factory sharp" knives and chisels!). C'est la vie. I appreciate you and thought the video of your wife's knife ranking was amusing and I did like the pretty ones too! I'd be interested to see some content around you walking the viewer through how you come up with subject ideas and how you determine proportions. I like carving/whittling, just not that creative! Thanks for the entertainment.
Now that would be a fun video, i have a whole box of "carvings" that were predecessors of what was on the videos :)
I have all the tools except the ingredient. Where can I find a block of wood in the city
Hardware stores, craft stores, woodworking stores, lumber yards, any place that sells wood is sure to have different varieties
Got it, Sir! Thank you very much @@CarvingisFun
