$100,000 Name That Tune (October 1984) - Possible Golden Medley cheater?

- From the same set as the Annie/Michael episode, with Carol Bawer and Hap Trout vying for their chance to win big. Contains a fairly infamous Golden Medley playing where the champion exploits the system to his advantage. Your mileage may vary on whether or not it's cheating (clearly the show didn't see a problem with it), but it's pretty crafty nonetheless.

Passing became chaos in this round. When a player passes, it should have been straight to the next one, no guess until it plays again.
When this gentleman finally gets to the finals of the tournament of champions he met his match with a guy who was far faster on the buzzer and fully understood that there was no penalty in the two contestant Golden Medley for incorrect answers. Just mash that buzzer and guess, no penalty for getting it wrong
One of my best friends Carol Bawer.
Hap then of course got beaten in the Golden Medley SHowdown round with Michael Lagmay in the TofC with Lagmay winning 16 tunes to four.
Lagmay also really stretched some of the rules or at least used them to his advantage. The final did not offer a penalty for a wrong answer and Lagmay just mashed the button and guessed. I am not suggesting he "cheated" but Name that Tune had some flaws in the way it worked.
@@BadIdeaSociety You were not penalized for wrong answers in the Golden Medley showdown. Their was no passing either. It was simply a rapid fire see who got the most correct answers in the time alloted.
@@cshafer29169 I get it. In the regular Golden Medley you were. There should have been a penalty for wrong answers. Lagmay realized that he could just mash the buzzer to no penalty in the showdown round.
@@BadIdeaSociety Hap got what he deserved in that sense. What goes around, comes around.
Yeah, in tournaments, a wrong answer in the GMS should result in being locked out of the next tune or losing a point.
The last song of this episode was such a rude one!
I don't think he's cheating. I think it's fair to try to listen to it, then pass if you don't know or you're trying to think about it afterwards.
At first I didn't think that he cheated, but then again the clocked was stopped. He used the stopped clock to his advantage. Therefore, that's a bit like cheating. So in the end, the show really needed to change their rules about passing.
the show lacked technical rules on pass
I dont think he cheated when he said passed he was thinking the song over and over to get it right.
No cheating. if there is no rule you cannot be cheating
I wouldn't say he cheated per se, but he definitely did bend the rules really hard to his advantage.
I'm positive that someone else tried that trick later on, but Jim wouldn't allow it. Jim said that they had already passed so they would have to come back to it later.
Yeah I think they clamped down on that after.
Obvious Rule Patch as TV Tropes calls it
I hope that this episode should be on Tubi in much better quality with the prize plugs restored. This came from a Family Channel (now Freeform) airing from the 1990’s where the prize plugs have removed.
The issue is that Jim talks too much in between tunes which gives him a chance to think about it. Technically it’s not cheating because they haven’t played the next tune but still there should be a rule that you can’t guess till it’s played again
I totally agree!
I'm sorry there was no cheating whatsoever
Yeah... The problem here is that the show doesn't necessarily have the rules down pat on passing. For example, on Password Plus Alphabetics, you could not get the word except when that word was up -- you pass it, you have to come back to it, then give the answer, then you get credit.
On at least some versions of Pyramid, you could pass to the next subject, give the previous, and get credit for it.
I'd have to see the rules they were given, but it does not appear as if there's a problem here.
Poor horses
How is this cheating if he was GIVEN the chance to answer after passing?
The Tune Topics sound effects still weren't put together at this point.
I thought Hap Trout and Michael Lagmay were in in 1985. Which contestant was on first?
Michael and Hap were the finalists in the same $100K tournament finals. I think 10/1-10/19/1984 was the airdates of the first qualifying period and tourney. at least on KYW in Philly.
@@zachhoran Michael was on first on a Monday, their first regular game after the Superchamps Tournament that occupied the first two weeks of the show. Hap was on the same week as Michael, but on Friday. Rick (whom Hap beat in the samifinials) was on Wednesday the same week, and Shirley (whom Michael beat in the semifinals) was on the next Monday her first time on the show.
Sourced from a Family Channel rerun.... next show plug at the end voiced by Charlie O'Donnell!
I hope this episode will be shown on Tubi where it restores the original prize plugs and constellation prizes intact.
I bet someone could upload an tournament of champion episode of Hep vs. Rick on Name that tune with Jim Lange
Can't really call it cheating, he just took advantage of them not having a set rule about how passing works... There's really no way he should've been allowed to name the tune 20 seconds after he said "pass", imo once you pass, you should be forced to the next tune and then have to come back to the passed tune(s)
16:22 😂😂😂😂😂
Hap definitely bent the rules here. Jim should have carried on with the game and come back to the tune afterwards.
Did this ever happen before in the Golden Medley round?
I think he's taking advantage of passing. He should've just left alone.
Definitely not cheating if there's no rules against it. It's the show's fault for not closing the loophole.
Smug isn't he?
Yes, very. I like to root for smug people to lose.
Smug mode on
He was very smug. But he got it knocked out of him in the TOC finals.
love this show.
Definitely a cheater when you take 20 seconds to guess Sunny
