As you know, I’ve been guilty of the avoidance & hyper vigilance for over two years. Now older & wiser and beginning to crack it. It’s a loooooooong process but totally doable 👊🏼
Yes it’s a tricky one but it’s just another symptom. I think it is important to get your nervous system regulated, also change how you perceive the fatigue exhaustion. And then get in touch with emotions
Im definitely a TMS sufferer but on the right side of this diagram where the symptoms are spiking. It’s really tough to get past that. It’s actually excruciating to practice indifference. I have had some pain free days after pushing myself to re engage in life but then the symptoms come back with a vengeance! It’s a tough and rocky road!
I guess I’m still not understanding how you distinguish real health issues from TMS. Even if there is a real issue not catastrophying it would be important. I assume I still have to eat healthy, exercise... If I have a virus being patient and not worrying is helpful.
Yes just using moderation I would say. Fear avoidance has been studied really well with chronic pain and they see it like a phobia after awhile. We need to expose ourselves to the things we are afraid of to overcome the pattern in the brain. If symptoms are chronic and no structural reason then likely to be TMS
@@thepainpt I have chronic digestive issues, heartburn. So what to eat is a real question. Then I’m not going to be able to just let the heart burn happen. I’ll have to take something.
Hey Bruce Not everybody has this as their primary pattern but a lot of people do. If you are avoiding things out of fear of the symptoms you could have some of this pattern. Because the pattern lives in the brain that’s why we need to challenge it just like with a phobia exposure is the answer with the understanding that what’s going on is nothing more than a reaction from your brain
Well, I guess that we must confront the fear itselve, and, with doing that also a probable spike in pain. When this spike comes we must be able to tell ourselves that it comes from the lymbic brain, that doesn't want to let go of it's protective role... that we didn't really hurt ourselves. And we will have to to this over and over again untill it, at some point, will be convinced that we are safe, and can stop protecting us. That's what I take from it....
I keep confronting the fear/pain, but it allways knocks me down, mostly the next day(s). And OMG does it hurt. To a point where is just becomes unbearable, and I have to start all over again. Time after time after time, for years now. How to stick to it, or how to open up/widen the window of tolarance? Could you maybe do a video on this problem ones?
Yes when the pattern hits is when you need to go into action and start refuting it not believing it doing the opposite of what the pattern says to start to break it down. We can’t change the pattern until we’re in it that’s the most opportune time to make a dent in it. when we’re right in the middle of it. So keep breaking the pattern down when it comes don’t believe it don’t agree with it don’t act in alignment with it

We are all guilty because we’ve been told to “take it easy” by the clueless medical establishment and mainstream PT people, Chiropractors etc.
But what about things like exhaustion from Fibro? I can push thru the perception of pain but tiredness, exhaustion makes it impossible to move!

@@thepainpt do you offer any courses etc?
It takes time to fully transition to the right side. For awhile you might be doing both then gradually to the right fully.
Thank you
This so powerful! I really needed this reminder. Thank you Jim.

Yeah and the fear around the horrid perception of pain is hard to ignore.
Very helpful! Subscribed :)
Thanks! That was very helpful.
Superb Jim thanks!

I think it’s both. Always take care of the animal AND if you check out having no broken bones etc. proceed.
I needed this today.
Exactly what must the pain patient confront, Jim, after moving beyond fear 😧 ? Is this some kind of hurdle?

Thank you so much for this. I really needed this in order to enjoy soccer again, which is something I realized I won’t be able to do forever.

@@thepainpt Wait, in another video you say when spiking don’t do the work. Only do it when youre not flaring. This feels like a contradiction.
