  • Well, learning to paint like a pro that is really bad at painting. Like, I guess they're not a "pro" in the complimentary way, but maybe still like a "pro" as in professional. I don't know why they would still have a job though if they're bad. Maybe they're self-employed? Or maybe they're blackmailing their employer into letting them keep their job. Either way, I'm painting like them. I'm painting badly.

I installed a transmission cooler inline between the compressor head and tank which lowered the inlet temp dramatically. Downstream I'm using a similar PVC water trap.

your progress learning how to paint is really awesome.
Those small dots you can see in some of your Coats (that orange peel stuff) is actually Silicone and grease from you and the air, you should use a tent or at least cover the floor and use a Painter suit.

    some tips for painting
    1. water down the floor: this will keep dust from drifting onto your parts and make the paint last longer and get better adhesion
    2. even through it is plastic, sand down your parts after the first primer is put down. even if the company says you don't have to you should still do it. this will give you a smoother finish and you guessed it, better adhesion and longer lasting paint.
    3. after your first layer of paint you should get some super fine sandpaper and give it a good rubdown. this will take out any more finer imperfections and give a nice rough surface for the future layers to adhere too and a smoother looking finish
    4. cover the parts when youre not painting. building a small tent or put a box over them. this will prevent dust or other trash from falling on the panels or parts.
the name of the game is super fine scratches at the beginning and smooth finish at the end. this will let the paint last longer and look better.
also i suggest wiping down the pieces with 91% rubbing alcohol. it evaporates quick enough you dont have to worry about it damaging fiberglass or plastic but it will still remove oils and other contaminates from the surface.

Don Hertzfeldt once said, "The only thing that matters is what actually winds up on the big screen, not how you got it there. You could make a cartoon in crayons about a red square that falls in unrequited love with a blue circle, and there wouldn’t be a dry eye in the house if you know how to tell a story." It's just a thought - not actually a tip having never tried it, but it might have been a good idea to try to set the new faux windows out in the sun on a hot day on their new spots held down with clamps to see if they heat form at all. That way, you reduce the stress on the doublesided tape in the final install.

Ron, this might help. When my brother was getting ready to spray he'd do a quick blast at the floor in the area he would be painting. He did this to tack down any dust that got missed when prepping the room to advert any possibility of kicking up airborne particles that might land on the work. (This may be what caused the anomalies on your work) This was not like painting the floor, he'd shoot it from standing height. At the same time he'd do a final glance at the spray pattern and volume from the gun. Then quickly set out the pieces to be painted. Same thing if your painting a whole car, just cover the car before you put some quick blasts at the floor.

    Thank you Mate.
Just a avid fan, like every one else. This is real. Making mistakes. Waiting for bloody parts!! And really the motivation to keep going on a project is very hard at times. The work on the car, is the relaxing part. Lovin it & learning too.
    Fan from Sydney Australia.

Ronald, great job on the trim. I know how frustrating painting can be. You've got a great balance between "perfection" and "good enough". Folks restoring cars to be a driver get too hung up on perfection. Those sail panels turned out very nice by the way.

the windows look great! You will pick it up as you go. No point just watching videos, the only way to get the experience is to paint. 👍👍

I would never fix that imperfection on that sail panel! It will always remind you of your journey on this car. Especially where it is. Only you will notice down the road. Most fieros sail panels are always broken because they get pushed on when you open the door with hand not on door handle. Yours will be way nicer than those! Can’t wait to see it done!

You did a great job and the best way to learn to paint is by doing it. It’s actually good to make the common mistakes, so if they crop up in the future, you know how to correct them. All that being said, practice makes perfect, so having a few junk panels of the same material you want to paint is also a good way to learn.

My dude, much respect. I am currently finishing my re-paint of my tiny Honda Ruckus. I've had problem after problem with adhesion, reactions, and junk getting stuck in them. I don't even want to imagine the frustration of doing all that on an entire car. You're in the home stretch, it looks like. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished product. Keep up the good work!

They look good. We all have to start somewhere. I recently refinished some wheels I picked up on the cheap for my Challenger, I made some boo-boos, but I used them as-is for now... However, when winter comes I will take them off and redo it

My dad did this when he was alive so, I know what you are going though. He told me it was a learning process for everything that you do. Everything is different and what might work in some situations might not work in others. Glad though you figured it out. and wish we lived next to each other so we could hang out sometimes. lol!! Thanks for the journey!!

Painting is an art/science for sure. Thanks for sharing your "adventures" in car restoration!! No, you haven't inspired me to get into restoring cars, at least not yet. Maybe in a few years?
Doing my best to keep my 2001 Chrysler Sebring Convertible Limited from ending up in a field under trees buried in mud/dirt. 19 years in, still no field parking spot, unless it's at a car show. Looking forward to seeing the next video!

You're not even done with this project yet, but I find myself hoping that you will do another car after this one. Thanks for sharing. Cheers, --Bo

One of the best educators for painting you could possibly get is working with model kits. Or at least that's what I did, on top of looking up professional painters on youtube to get a better understanding and to lock on to a pattern that I want to use for any given project.
I have a 1997 Chevy Tahoe where heat had caused the paint to crack and working with that paint job I learned three things. The OEM paint job does not match the color it appears to be very well, Dark Cherry Metallic. To solve this issue, I've discovered that they used a Dark Clear Coat before adding the additional clear coat protection. And finally number three, The primer. I've sifted through a number of primers and determined that the paint job is so far gone it would make one wonder if it is even worth doing this. Reality is, since it's a 97 Tahoe I'm likely going to keep to the Chris Fix method of painting, but with a slight twist. To keep unevenness out of the paint job, I'm likely going to mask off a lot of rubber/chrome and scuff everything to touch up, respray, and then dark clear and clear coat the whole mess.
