I would advocate for my 2 favorites, Rice and Bread Pudding, till the end of days. It's ok to be wrong sometimes, David, but not now. Not with the glory that is pudding 😎
A lot of the appeal of the Neptunia series is about the cute girls (and sometimes cool fish) and the videogame industry references. It also really loves breaking the fourth wall. It's definitely not for everyone, but it's pretty accessible to anyone it does appeal to. Don't worry, you're not a vtuber! That's a real thing, short for Virtual UA-camr, folks on youtube and twitch who use animated avatars instead of showing their face.
@@PrettyGothBoi6085 I know. I can't stand it. I already have a hard time enduring those "2D cartoon avatars" people put of themselves in video essays. What makes vtubers weirder is kind of like they're trying to be anime characters as well. The whole thing just makes me cringe and takes away too much attention from the activity for me.
This series definitely has it's own group of niche fans, I'm one of them! The Neptunia series is not the greatest or groundbreaking when it comes to JRPGs but they are my guilty pleasure games, I love them and always have so much fun with them. Looking forward to this new installment!😊
I'm here for Rena from Higurashi and Reimu from Touhou more than anything 😂 I love this series and was planning to buy it eventually anyway, but I had to pounce on it immediately when I found out those two were making an appearance. Part of the problem I see with this series and similar titles from the same publishers is that a lot of players don't seem to get that this is a satire. Another great example was Omega Quintet. People thought that it was supposed to be taken seriously at face value and treated it like it was just braindead, pointless schlock. It's a jab at the idol phenomenon and those who mindlessly obsess over it, just as Neptunia lampoons the rampant consumerism and infighting within the, well, gaming industry (and each new title adds more angles, like the major shift from consoles to smartphones like we see here). These games are actually some pretty telling social commentary, wrapped up in a moe shell...some instances more thinly-wrapped than others, obviously. I know these things aren't for everyone but I hope people can at least see past the outer layers and appreciate the subtext.
One of my biggest complaints of this series is re-used assets. They’ve been using the same ones since the first game. This definitely looks like a game I’ll grab on sale.
I have never heard of this series, but the game sounds adorable, and I kind of really like all of the naming they use “R-phone”, “V-tubers”. That and the story sounds fun, I mean, PC’s have been taken over and now everyone plays only on their phones…..fantastic idea for a story.
@Vile Disturbance 🇷🇺 Thank you for the explanation. Sounds very much like a game series people have to enjoy for what it is and know what they're getting themselves into.
@Vile Disturbance 🇷🇺 Re:Birth series crystallizes what makes the whole series special (or not). Shares system. VN interludes. Whole game industry parody. Collecting resources to make extra content/different modes. Big fan myself. Hope more folks try it.
Yep, this looks par for the course for Hyperdimension Neptunia. It reminds me a little mix of the games from the PS Vita as well as the Four Goddesses online game from PS4, which was also an action RPG. Thank you for the review, David. I may just wait for a sale. There are so many good games coming out this year.
Great review. One of the most fair & balanced that I’ve seen so far. I’m playing it myself now. Neptunia games have always been kind of like gaming junk food for me. I usually like to play them in between a serious, epic rpg, to take a little break. These games won’t appeal to everyone, but I do appreciate Compile Heart’s creativeness with their combat systems. The humor is pretty good at times too.
I've always enjoyed the Neptunia games for their charm and satire, and I will say the team at IF has been really improving in a lot of ways (though I would rather they just make the games shorter than pad out the dungeons) and SvS looks solid. Also, I have to hand it to IF's marketing team- handing the game off to actual JRPG UA-camrs was absolutely the right move
Great review as always. I have all the Neptunia games and yes this is pretty much all of them with a few new mechs and story. They are pretty fun and breaks away from more complicated jrpg's out there. I personally think 4 Goddesses Online was the one that broke the traditional Neptunia formula.
David my man...this is 6th action RPG in the series. Also the CPU Candidates are representing handheld systems not consoles. That's why Vert (Xbox) doesn't have a little sister.
6:28 correction you actually can guard and dodge attacks it's tied to the right trigger button but the game never tells you/indicates that its a feature ^-^
I'm excited for this one. I have a feeling that it'll be better than the last few Nep games, at least. But of course Amazon still hasn't shipped my pre-order even though it comes out tomorrow 🙄
When it comes to neptunia, if you like turn based, I would personally consider VIIR the best game in the series so far. The most recent of the Mainline games (and as sad this fandom is about the fact it released like 5 years ago and is a "remake" (mostly gameplay rework) of a game from 2016. aka. no mainline game in 7 years.
The little that know of Neptunia is that this game will get a remake in a few years lol. I did search about the series last year, and seems like the original release has the best story and VII (the original one) overall is the best game, well at least among thoses who play theses games
I'm not really into this series and I only loosely see the appeal of these games (cute girls, classic JRPG style gameplay, video game references), but I appreciate you putting the information out there.
The "copy and paste" thing in today's RPGs drives me nuts - even in some bigger-budget, higher quality games, you see a lot of "Rinse and Repeat" formulas go through the whole game (you know - this dungeon looks exactly like the one a few areas ago - it's not unique or new in any way, this town is a carbon copy, or the gameplay follows the same formula over and over - do this activity/then this activity/then this third thing and then REPEAT and then REPEAT AGAIN). It's like paint-by-numbers game design. I understand reusing some assets (palette swaps are classic JRPG, right?) - but is it that hard to change things up as you go through a game?
Been into this series since the beginning and I've always had a thing for the characters, especially Nepgear and Neptune. I'll give this a go along with the Dead Space Remake and Hi-Fi Rush. Just wanna say while your criticism of the dungeons being very samey is valid the Neptunia games have always been like this. That being said Megadimension Neptunia VII introduced a lot of areas never seen before, plus the music in later parts really stood out to me too.
The conversations in this sound a bit like the skits in a Tales game. I’m currently playing Tales of Xillia and have mixed feelings because while I love character interaction, having that interaction be partially relegated to a side event is a bit jarring.
It's interesting that you say that. Some people are outspoken about feeling that they're forced to go through boxes upon boxes of character interaction in certain games. I think besides the optional nature of such interactions is the importance that the character interactions are actually substantial. Some people complained that the Tales style skits between the main characters in Bravely Default 2 didn't really go anywhere and were annoying because of that (characters just mentioning a thing and agreeing with each other).
I actually really loved the Death End Request games by Idea, and Fairy Fenser Advent Dark Force was decent as well. But one thing all these have in common is, while nearly all of the JAPANESE track is voiced, a significant portion of the English Dub is not. Given my slow reading speed, I don't have the time to play JRPGS which aren't at least MOSTLY voiced. If you used the English track, did you find much of it straight text?
Thanks for giving such an informative review! I'd been sitting on some Steam credit from the holidays for a while now, and I just went shopping for Neptunia X Senran Kagura since that was on sale, when I found out about this game while doing so. This review gave me enough information that I bought it alongside Neptunia X SK, and now I'll be eating good during the start of this year.
Neptunia is notoriaous for re using assets and given the company is not that big it makes sense. However, some of the duengons felt pointlessly large. Overall 'd say this was an experiment and an attempt to breath new life into the series.
Yup and really similar to this game too, but it looks like this one took a little inspiration from either the Tales of or Star Ocean series with the combo system and by having the battles transition into a battle map that looks the same instead of happening in the real map.
You were more positive about this game than Backlog was, but there was a lot of negatives here. I've known about the Neptunia series for a while too. The games always interested me but I never bought any cause the reception is usually slightly above average or mediocre. If only the developers would give this series little more substance than style, then it wouldn't be so repellant to most.

I like visual novels and sometimes I just wanna mindlessly walk around, pick up loot and beat on some baddies in a simple RPG but I HATE the art style. Can't stand the overly cutesy, borderline loli bait look. Just turns me off. Good review either way David 👍
Another reviewer had an indifferent experience with the game. And then your review came up so swung by because I respect your opinions. I laughed at the Visual Novel and Pudding critique. Those are the things I like about the series lol (As well as gameplay/story etc etc) The only thing that concerns me about this game is the whole Action RPG thing. The semi real time turn based gameplay is what I'm used to. Always appreciate your approach and it's awesome more folks are trying out the series.
