I am 74yrs and remember getting my Mother Earth News in the mail, reading about Ruth Stout's story and reading Rodale magazines from cover to cover! Those were the days! Also Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew! Did a lot of small garden plots in my neighborhood garden!

I'm 73 and have the exact same memories. Mother Earth News - though it is / was a magazine - back in those days in came in the mail in a newspaper format, not today's slick magazine print. I used to love reading through the "Want Ads" in the back. I was a member of the Rodale Book Club, and still have Ruth Stout's book. I practiced the Bio-dynamic French Intensive gardening method - with double dug raised beds.

Well I’m a youngster at 68 but yeah, me too! I got disabled in the military and my young family needed to eat anyway. Those magazines and books were essential for our survival. The Foxfire books got several reads too!
I still have a box full of mother earth news in my shed when I built my root cellar and garden, I dug them out to get Ideas. great magazine.
By far - your best videos are the ones highlighting Darrel and his gardens. I am a young adult of the 70s and remember pouring over Mother Earth mags too. They are still out there but not quite the same as the 70s versions. A wonderful friend to have indeed. A lot to be learned from him. Truly enjoy him.

Love the treepee. I have very old metal clothes posts in my yard that I no longer use. Rather than paying someone to remove them, I was thinking of repurposing them as teepees, for beans and possibly gourds. Darrell needs to do a book on all the ways to use bamboo😊

Mother Earth magazine started in my home town. I remember going into their office with my mom when I was young.

I can totally identify with Darrell. In the 70s I loved my Mother Earth magazine and my Countryside magazine (the old original one).
Mother Earth News is still one of my favorite magazines!
I made a few arched cattle panels "rooms". I plant inside if hoop. I also covered the arch with 30% shade. Plants love it, as do I. Also, cloth protects from hail which wiped me out 2 years ago.

I love his creativity. Is that a pond he built? And he's feeding it from his own spring water? Love it!!! I have to say I saw your friend and his bird house gourds on your channel a while back. It inspired me to build cattle panel arches and I have gourds growing on them now along with a kiwi trellis and a grape trellis. I had bamboo in chgo and I used the stalks for stakes for my plants. But I'm in TN now and I don't have bamboo here - to old to control it now. I love seeing what others do with thier imagination and some elbow grease.
I string up indeterminate tomatoes inside my cattle panel arch trellis. Cucumbers, squash, or pumpkins could also be planted inside and strung up so you don't waste space.

Yep... Mother Earth News, My dad used to get it... I had to wait for my dad to finish reading it before I could. And Good Ole Mel!!! The king of raised bed gardens... I have the Original 1981 copy of the Square Foot Garden book from my dad. Me and dad watched his show on PBS for years. I'm still using the 4 trellised - 4x4 beds my dad built when they moved to the house I am in now!

You could plant lettuce and other shade veggies under the trellis and the tree pee.
He does that, but usually it's potatoes.

I use the arched trellis. I plant snow peas on the outside of the trellis in a box made from pallet wood. Under the inside of the trellis I made boxes and plant cucumbers in them as the peas start to die back in early summer. No wasted space.

For yrs I've used cattle panels for horse corrals. Saw yrs ago a home stead in SE 🇺🇸 used them for green house frame and arch growing area as well. Endless possibilities. 😊

Lamb's quarters tastes exactly like spinach to me. If you don't have it, I recommend it as a weed. It's also easy to pull out and not terribly invasive. It's probably in my top 10 weeds.
I had a huge one come up from seeds I got from Darrell. I let it go to seed and spread them all around my side garden. He said it would be the first thing to come up. I haven't seen a single shoot.

We have gardened here since78 .I have much in common with Darrel .44years here and gardened in upstate NY,Florida and northern NM for about 10 years and gardened growing up from 6-17 in our family organic garden in the 50s and 60s. about a mile from our place now .My grandparents subscribed to Prevention and Organic Gardening way back then.. that's a total of 64 years. of gardens in 4 states/regions ..my new cattle panels are erected with my asperagus beds beneath the center and tieded to metal tposts on my grape and thornless blackberry trellises up about 3ft . I put a large flower tubs under each trellis to plant in to keep wild rabbits from eating the peas, beans, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes planted to climb them .Everything is mulched except grass paths I mow with a grass catcher to feed my horses almost care free,..

I added a long thin bed in the middle of my arched trellis to grow lettuce a bit longer into the heat as the veining plants will give it a bit of shade.
Great info on trellises Kaye. I never thought of the disadvantages of the growing space they take up but is something to consider. Love the rock terrace setup on the hills which might be something you could use at your homestead too. Thanks for sharing.
Well Darrell has been there I think 28 years and he’s been building those rock terrace walls all this time and I can’t even imagine what it would cost me to hire somebody to do something like that, although I had hoped last year I had hoped that my tomato terraces could that rock walls could be the front bank for those, but that didn’t happen
@@Latebloomershow Actually I have been here 21 years, but the new growing beds out front, most of the rock walls, and the pond have all happened since I retired in 2014. If you all knew my plans for rock walls around here, you'd think I was crazy. I'm just getting started!
@@darrellluck7230 my husband was a mason and loved rocks.. there are no rocks in southern DE so they are precious here His firch masontry job was a whole stone house by the beach he worked all winter but underbid the job as he did not know how long it would take..We made no income that winter but someone got a beautiful home..

Weigela shrubs are my favorite and I have a few varieties. I wonder if Darrell could give you a hand in building a few of those trellis for you? I heard him say they were the easiest and quickest to make. You certainly have enough space for them. Thank you for another great video.
Well you know he has to pack up his mother to come over here and she hast to be comfortable while he would do that so he did come for the bamboo TP trellis but we got a bad wind right after that and it blew down and I never even made the video so it’s hard to get him over here. I may have some more help this week I’m not sure.

I have a huge pile of them. Could never bring myself to throw them away. They had a huge influence on my life.
Before my father died he was able to get discs with all of the old Mother Earth News issues in digital format. Until my computer died, I was able to access them.
I dont have Darryls talent so i ordered an A-frame trellis. When it arrives I will plant spaghetti squash and zucchini. Thanks for the inspiration Kaye 😍

Fun to listen to him. Love Rodale. Miss Bob. Grew up on a farm in Washington state. Mother loved organic. Dad not so much. Graduated HS 67. Have some bamboo to plant. Wish I had more water besides lots of rain. That is what I use to water garden.

This Spring, I'm going to install some horse panel on a portion of my south-facing patio awning roofline, using hinges. I plan on planting Beit Alpha (Israelis) cucumbers, then as the vines set fruit, fold the wall up, forming a canopy, shading the patio from midday sunshine.
I would use the pool house roof, except I already have mature peach and apple trees flanking my pool.
Before someone thinks this through and realizes it won't work, I should tell everyone, I grow in wicking tubs and these tubs will be sitting on a shelf 7 feet in the air, so the plants' vines will first fall, then as they reach bottom, I plan on folding the wall up into a canopy or roof, with the fruits dangling.

I have had bamboo trellises for 4 years now and this year the bees are making nests in them.... oiii. What do you do when that happens? They can be quite territorial especially in the afternoon. They try to buzz me out of the garden. Please help!
Mini gardeners are saying that their seed is not germinating. Only about a third to half of their seeds are viable

@@Latebloomershow No they’re not saying why. They’re just saying in general their seeds were not all coming up. They were some statements made on Appalachia Homestead UA-cam channel. I don’t recall what companies they’re getting the seeds from but in reading briefly through their statements it was seeds in general
