Cattle Panel Trellis Reimagined | Transporting Them In A SUV

- I wanted to give everyone a good video on how I build my cattle panel trellises using 2 8ft panels as opposed to the single 16ft panel. I also wanted to give you the visual of what they look like loaded in the back of my SUV. Are 2 8ft panels better to use? I introduce one of my thoughts as to why I think so.
Thanks for stopping by!

What I did was buy the 16 foot panels from Lowes. They are the Tarter brand, about $27 each. They can do truck delivery for $65. To justify the delivery cost, I made sure I ordered all the lumber and all oversized items that would not fit into a car. I waited a year until I slowly put my list together from 10 foot conduit tubes to heavy sand bags for starting my hardwood cuttings. I was in no rush and the cost of delivery was worth it.
just checked, they are almost $43 each now! YIKES.
Welcome to 2023 :(@@tmorrison5965
They are selling the 16 footers for $67 each at our local Bomgaars. Our HD doesn't carry them. Highway robbery!
$87 per 16' at my local hardware store. Last time I bought them they were around $40 ea. Ouch.
Uhaul rents trucks for just $20 a day.
For the 16' I put an aluminum extension ladder on my minivan luggage rack and then load them on top. Works great. The ladder supports them so they don't flop around.
Great idea !
Great idea- extends your loading space, and can tie it good and secure !
I bought six and the same time, and paid the store to deliver them!
so smart
I was thinking the same thing! I tried to pick some up today, but the folks at the store wouldn't load them on my van. Jerks... I'm going to take someone with me next time.
Bring a bolt cutter with you and you can cut 16 ft panels down before you load them. Also, if you often find yourself needing more hauling capacity, consider buying a light utility trailer. It's nearly as useful as a pickup, way cheaper and you can pull them with almost anything.
In 2019 I bought 16 ft. Cattle Panels from Lowes for $17....Now post-pandemic they're double the price, at $34 ea.
Damn those artificial pandemics!!! @@NineSixteenGenetix916
Great ideas. I'm an older woman, 72 but still in good shape, doing gardening by myself.
Love your ideas. Lots of potential for me. Thx
Elsewhere cattle are roaming the range because all the cattle panels are being used by gardeners.😊
The very reason I dont have cattle panel in my garden right this second is because I dont have a truck and you just solved that problem:) My poor hubby....lol
🤣🤣🤣 I know what you mean lol.
Glad you found this helpful! Hopefully you can get some up and start enjoying them
My SUV has light weight roof racks. I get 2 12’ 2x4’s and tie them & the Cattle panels to the roof racks leaving 2’ overhang on each end
The only reason I don't have cattle panel trellises in my yard is because they don't seem to be available where I live. Not a single hardware store carries them and I can't find any suppliers online.
@@NayrbRellimer Tractor supply?
Just found your channel on cattle panels. I’ve been trying to figure a way to get 16 ft on top of my suv, I know I can do 8ft. Thank you so very much for posting this, it helps us single older ladies/gents how to do this. Love how your garden landscape looks, so lovely to spend such a wonderful peaceful time there. Love seeing kids in the gardens too, teaches early
I have been using cattle panel trellises for 5 years. I love them. I even have a cattle panel greenhouse.
Awesome! We have a cattle panel greenhouse also, except I had my brother help me get the 16 foot panels for that project, easier to lay plastic on a smooth panel
How did you build your greenhouse? I feel like the $30 delivery fee from my favorite farm & garden store is reasonable if I buy lots at once (like 8 16 foot cattle panels at once-and this time, my next door neighbor and I are sharing that cost).
Debra Schwicht we based our green house on Texas Prepper and his plans. ua-cam.com/video/-DKlXs8iov0/v-deo.html he has great instructions on his channel.
I did mine off the Texas Prepper design. I made the ends a solid wall because I plan on added shelves to the inside and making the wall a chalkboard so I can keep notes from the garden. I made a playlist of going through and building mine by myself with the 16 ft panels. ua-cam.com/play/PL87XADqglyUxG6R3vix-s-GAZXlBoLn3w.html The Texas Prepper instructional video is better for building plans, this was just my take on it
@@debraschwicht9741 I encourage you to ask a neighbor or friend to use their trailer if you know someone who has one. I have a nice trailer 6x10 or 12 and I loan it to everyone ! I think other people use it more than I do 😊 I don’t mind at all !!!
I am a sixty seven year old woman with a walker. I used the 16 x 4 panel, laid it on the ground, put bamboo poles on all four ends..with about 18 inches hanging below the fence. You have to think about it. Realize you are going to flip one side over to make a half, so the legs have to go out on both short sides. I Tie wrapped the bamboo poles all over to the poles, lifted the one set of legs to match the others. Tied them together to I could stand them up. Caution!!!! When you get them in place you need at least two, but should have four people. When you untie the rope, the fence will spring open. I like his 8 x 4 because the arches are tall enough I have to get a ladder to pick cherry tomatoes!
I love how inventive you are, Diane! Where there's a will ....
Really good idea to use them for low tunnels in the winter!
I'm hoping they work as well as I think they will
@@Citystead did they?
I love that as well!!
Just bought two 16’ers, bought beefy bolt cutters at Harbor Freight & cut the panels in half, loaded them in my suv/truck. Saved about $45 minus the bolt cutters. Thanks for the video!
We've been using ranch panels we've been using those forever in our garden and around our ranch....and finally people are listening and using them. Of course that's making the price go up but it is what it is and hopefully you guys will farm and feed your families which is very important!
Thanks for showing how you haul the panels. Told my husband I want to make cattle panel trellis but we been waiting cuz we haven't figure out the best way to transport them without a truck. So glad to found your vid
This idea of flipping it to use as a wind tunnel. This is everything. Thanks so much. Also on how to pack the panel as Tractor Supply doesn't do delivery.
it's nice for keeping stuff longer and getting an early start on some areas
This is really helpful , to see how you get them home. It solves a huge problem for me! After watching this I think I can get two into the trunk of my Hyundai Sonata with the seats folded down. I’m glad you used my idea to unhook them and make low tunnels 😁😁😁😁 I am going to make my high arches slightly different and am going to make some videos soon on how this middle aged handicapped lady will do it on her own 👍
Right on! Should have gave you some credit, that would be interesting to see for sure
I like the versatility idea, particularly with regards to the low tunnel option. It'd be nice to mod with a modest framework + hinges. Cheap carabiners might be a viable option for connection points...and more durable than plastic in all seasons.
Thanks for the helpful vid!
That was nice to watch how to handle 8 ft panels!!! We have a bunch of them and want to do that. Idk if the 2 of us are strong like you though as were older now! You made it look easy. It was so nice to see examples of how to handle them! I also thought of just tipping them toward each other in a point and tie them up.
Enjoy your youth and vigor while you've got it! Your kids are so cute!
I like the extended garden idea too.
I haven't been able to do a big garden this year and now I'm happy because this is the best idea I have seen with these panels. I saw your other video but taking them apart and making them into little green houses or tunnels is just genius!
Our garden isn't that big but the vertical space these give you makes it easier to grow a lot more
I've watched gardening and homesteading videos on UA-cam regularly for 2 years and this is the first video I have seen of yours. I'll be checking out your other videos for sure. Western Illinois
I've been making videos for 2 years now that's kind of crazy, but our channel is still pretty small. Thanks for watching hopefully you find some other stuff you enjoy
Thank you! Thank you! I’ve been thinking about how I’m going to get 16ft cattle panels home! Lol
Plus the high tunnel idea is amazing. Not to mention attaching them with the barbed hooks!. I got a lot out of this video thank you. I’ll be doing it your way this year.
Very helpful! As a single senior I found cattle panels to be so useful to extend what I can produce in my backyard garden. I want to put up more trellises this year and did not know about 8 ft panels. I use rebar pieces to hold panels against my wooden garden beds. Again easy for me to use and I can move them if necessary.
I'll let you know if you haven't read some other comments but the prices are different nowadays for them, the 16' panels are a lot cheaper and if you take bolt cutters you can cut a 16' in hapf and save some money
Brilliant! I have a pick up truck but I’m thinking that these 8 foot panels are more versatile as you showed changing from a tunnel to a trellis. I’m 60-year-old female and the 8 foot panels would be a lot easier for me to handle. Thanks much!
One of the biggest pluses to me is just being able to handle them a little easier and safely
I am about your age too and husband doesnt help with anything so I fins the 8' panels easier for myself to bring home and install. I have just put up 2 straight across. Once I get more raised garden beds I will be doing this.
So helpful, especially showing it in the car. Now to just find some in stock.
Thanks, you have helped me to look at using this trellis method for my roses out of the pots into a bed. 🌻
Great ideas! Btw, I really like your Roots & Refuge shirt!
Thanks! It's one of my favorite shirts! Had to get one, Jess is so great and has been super kind and supportive of us here.
Clever! Easier for transporting was reason enough but I love the idea of being able to convert the arch into two little greenhouses. Very cool.
It's nice to try and get the most use out of them as you can.
@@Citystead Great idea for us folks with smaller cars and no trucks or trailers. One could widen out the base to make it a bit shorter, yet cover more space! Great idea!
I was told I needed to rent a large truck to get these home. Your way is so much better! Many thanks.
2-8 foot panels makes a lot of sense versus a 16 footer because it will support a lot more fruit when they’re overlapped on the top! Thanks for sharing this I was just about to pick up some 16 foot panels today!
Great video. I wish I'd seen it before I bought the 16 foot panels. The 8 foot panels are so much more versatile. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Thanks! There's always room to build more 😄
Thank you so much ! I've watched so many veg. gardening videos this season and desperately wanted to make cattle panel arches and trellis but not one video has solved my fundamental problem ..... how to get the panels home in my car ! Thanks for your no nonsense , practical advice . I'm off to the hardware store in the morning .
Glad to hear this might have helped, it's been a few days, were you able to build some arch trellises?
@@Citystead Thank you for your interest . I have ordered some eight foot cattle panels which should be here next week so I shall start building over the week end .
This should work out really well as it will give me some time to clear out a couple of my veg beds and make ready for some interesting vining plants next season
So happy that I am subscribed to you
My husband has started calling my car my "TruckUV" because I've put so much stuff in the back. looks like there's one more thing I can fit!
Heck yeah my little rendezvous is like my truck, so much stuff get shoved in that thing
@@Citystead I used to have a LeSabre....I moved so many things in that car! 🤣
I'm headed to tractor supply now lol
I just toted 16 ft panel in my SUV about a mile from Tractor Supply to home... sometimes even if there's a will you really shouldn't make a way. I did not put a single scratch on my Dash😃 but I cracked the windshield and tore the fabric on the the frame around the window😖 on a more exciting note, I finally have a cattle panel arch in my backyard like I've wanted🤣
Brilliant idea. I love the idea that it fits in an SUV
I have never seen the 8 ft panels around here. Great idea and thank you sharing your idea, always good to see new ideas. Keep bringing the great videos.
Someone suggested you could also get a 16 foot panel and use bolt cutters to cut it in half
I’m glad to see this arch, because I already have 8 foot panels and don’t want to buy 16 foot panels unnecessarily
Might be easier to lay panels flat and attach the top together then use your ratchet straps to bend the panels to desired width and put in place to attach at the bottom. 👍 Thanks for the SUV tip. I'm going to try it 😊
Awesome idea for the dual purpose trellis! I may have to rethink my plans for my trellises, now.
Thank you! It gives the garden more possibilities
This is a very clever idea! Fellow SUV driver here I had the same questions about transport vs cost. I love the addition of a low tunnel opportunities for fall! Fantastic!
you can buy the 16ft panels and cut them in half to save some money
Thank you for showing how you transported them in an SUV!
I just came across your video googling "how to haul 16 ft cattle panels on an SUV" 🤣 This is such a genius idea. Thank you!
Great idea! I really like the low tunnel idea. I have an odyssey and brought home 2 16' panels on top on the rack. They hung off the back but I just took it slow and put a flag on it.
I wish I'd watched this before I rented a uhaul for my sixteen footer! 🤣 Love to see you including your kids, bro. Good dad stuff.
I like the idea of using it as a low tunnel then switching it to a regular arched trellis! GENIUS JOSH!! Growing vines and feeling finnneeee!!
man should of used that as the videos title Growing vines and feeling finnneeee!!
The Citystead 😂😂 yessss🙌🏻
This makes way more sense to me to do it this way. I was watching MIgardeners video where he put a 16 foot panel across the top of his sedan and drove it home with his hazard lights on and I was like there’s no way I’m doing that plus tractor supply is like 20 minutes away from my house.
Exactly my problem, exactly the same distance to TS, and watched MIGardeners vid too! The 8ft x2 is the perfect solution
Aw ... she's beautiful 😇 Hey .. everyone Moniee-Mon, is listening thanks for the info vedios keep doing what'cha do best God bless ya!.
Love your one person arch trellises. Most videos show 2-3 people forming them! 😂 I tend to overplant my garden and your video gave me lots of ideas!! Very thorough!! 🌞🍅🌱🥒🌶️🌿🌻
Spray the ends with some plastic dip to prevent cuts and scrapes on yourself as well as your vehicle as long as you don't go over oard will still be easily placed into the ground if needed.
I plan on erecting my first cattle panel for my upcoming spring garden.
I am going to sink wooden fence posts for support instead of using
T-posts.
The fence posts are easier to remove if necessary & I can also add hardware to the wooden posts for hanging tools/ hoses and growing potted plants.
Don't know if anyone mentioned it yet but if you turn the 16' panels on their edge and bow them in, (Bowed middle up against the back of your bed and the open ends towards the tailgate) they will fit inside a standard bed truck with the tailgate closed (Just). Just put a strap on them from corner to corner.
Oh my goodness, I have wanted to get some but I could not for the life of me figure out how I was going to get them home. These will easily fit now that you showed how to transport, carry and set them up. Thank you so much.
So excited to hear this might help you out!
You have changed my life! My garden life, that is!
Wow that is some praise! Hope this really helps you out, you can also buy the 16ft panel and cutting it in half with bolt cutters to save some money
Great info video! We use the 16 foot and fold them in half, strap them on top of my Jeep! We have an archway up our ramp for the passion fruit vines to grow on and give us shade against the house!
Oh man I love passion fruit! They have the prettiest flowers
I think I like the 8 foot version too. Cool that they are over your walkway. I'm a big fan of the U nails.
yeah they worked out great for me
Thank you for the idea of using the 8 ft panels. I was struggling with thought of having to transport the 16ft. I have a Durango and this could possibly work for me.
You could also buy a 16ft panel and use bolt cutters to cut it in half. They are a little cheaper, I just have limited time and getting two 8ft panels was just quicker amd easier
Thanks for your video, this helped me decide my approach on doing cattle panels. I am in Marietta, Georgia... I want to plant Melons this year, and I am off to Tractor Supply this weekend. I have a truck and trailer, so will probably use that.
So happy to hear I could help you out some!
Yes I see some benift about the 8' size,
Thanks for showing your ways
They can offer some flexibility for sure
I was racking my mind trying to figure out how I was going to get a panel home in a Toyota forerunner lol - breaking it up -great idea 👍
Wonderful! I was thinking of using my panels for a “greenhouse” effect over my beds.
We have a cattle panel greenhouse also and it works great, get warm enough for seed starting in the early spring and we over wintered some greens in it this past winter
I used 12 foot panels, and started them up on the t posts about 2 ft. It makes it taller which is great for pole beans. I put them in my truck bed and away we went.
Wow! I was just thinking about this because I'm purchasing mine this weekend. Your video popped up just in time. Thanks for sharing.
Love your approach, thx for sharing! Found out some cable ties are uv resistant.....never read the bag all these years! Usually black.
Josh those are wonderful ideas!! 😉 I watched the previous video where you mentioned the reason for the 8ft panels so you could transport them in your car. I'm glad you showed in this one how you did it. Wonderful ideas, thank you!! 👍🏼
Thanks, I really wanted to make a more informational video about it
Thank you! This helps me very much. I sent this to my husband. No more excuses!
Very happy to hear this
Very clever! I subscribed. :) I think Deer Stakes would be a great way to anchor your cattle panels. That's what I want to do to build my cattle panel greenhouse this year. So I don't have to buy wood, and make a frame at the bottom.
Yeah you should be able to
I love it when people think outside the box!
Thank you! I was loving the trellises but wanted to find ways to make them even more useful
Tried to order 16' panels from TS, they wanted $300 just for delivery! Crazy! Closest store is 22 mi away. I was able to order from our local feed store for pick up. My neighbor needed to pick-up a few big things from HD, so we splitting the cost of a 15' Uhaul ($55) and just rolled the panels in half. I picked up some 2x4s
, concrete blocks, t-posts & a bale of hay since we had the truck. Ended up being a win/win for both of us.
Your little helper is so cute!! ❤
i fit 3x 16ft panels in my 5' bed no problem. the folks at tractor supply helped me bend them into a U shape with the open end facing the tailgate, the bend towards the cab
This is actually pretty ingenious! Thx for the idea.
Sweet garden helpers! So great to see the fam outside gardening!
They are the best garden helpers!
These are really great ideas, thanks so much for sharing your experience with the 8 foot panels, I am getting excited about this!
their pretty useful and a lot easier to handle
I love the low tunnel idea! Thanks for sharing.
Great video!! We were going to use the 16 ft but when I went to see them in person and also having an 'urban' garden/space - time for Plan B. And the 8ft panels are going to have to work. Seeing how you work with them 'year round'' makes more sense especially for the 'urban gardener'. Maximizing space is a huge factor.
I saw another video where they took the 16' and put into a u shape and put it into pickup bed. Yours is a good idea if you don't have a pickup
P.S. the truss style concrete block reinforcing "panels" (6 inches wide, ten feet long) flex nicely and fit in the back of a regular sedan style car with the back seat down. i demo that on my garden channel.
Great use of the cattle panels, Josh. And showing how to use the resources you have in moving them to the citystead!
Rob
Thanks Rob
Using them as a low tunnel is a good idea. I am excited to see how they work out for you. Thanks for giving us ideas on different growing tricks. 😊
Glad to share and hopefully it will get people thinking and we can all get even more ideas
Great tips! Looking forward to getting my raised beds in so I can make these trellises.
You will love them once you start using them
This reminds me of explaining to the insurance company, how I busted a window in the minivan, while loading it. (lol). And b.t.w. You could buy the 16' panels, and cut them in half in the parking lot before loading. If the panels are smaller then 8x4, then they would fit in the dodge caravans without folding.
Nice alternative to the 16' panels. I would like to suggest using 2 sets vice grips or locking pliers as a third hand to connect the panels at the arch. Especially when you don't have someone to help hold them together for you. I've picked up a few tricks and tips over the years having to do a lot of work by myself....& your ratchet straps could be handy in that regard also. 😉👍🏼🛠
You know that's a good idea 😂, I love getting the suggestions to help make this process easier because pulling the panels together is hard for sure. Plus I can help pass these little tips on 🙏 much appreciated
Great video! Thanks for the detailed, yet simple instructions and ideas. Looking forward to doing this for my new grape vines. 🍇
Love the idea of versatility as hoop house and arch
Thanks for the video and your time.
Good idea. I cut the ends off so that I have spikes that are pressed down and to the inside of the frame. No staples needed & is stronger.
Oh I like that, it would be nice to be able to do it with tools or anything extra
I'm a 66 year old and transported 2) 16 ft. panels on my Ford Explorer using 4 short bungie cords to secure to the roof rack and ALSO 4 longer ones to the bumper and trailer hitch. Nary a wiggle or jiggle the whole way home. Trick is in the tension. (All 8 sold in a box for $6.99- small price to pay for safety.)
For sure possible, just trying to think of ways to make it easier and more accessible to everyone
Cattle panels are not only “especially good for the North.” I’m in SW Oklahoma where the sun and 100 degree temperatures are relentless in the summer, so these are good for supporting shade cloth. Since we also have destructive hail and wind storms, I prefer the strong cattle panels, which can be anchored securely, to help support the cloth or plastic to protect plants from total destruction. Smaller, wimpier wire structures blow over, get shape shifted, etc.
Like the idea of dusting them for different uses !
First off... LOVE your shirt =) Second.. Thank you for this video. You've solved quite a few issues for me. I wanted a trellis to go over the walkways between my raised beds but I also wanted to make a sort of hoop house run for my chickens that would be on one raised bed I wouldn't use (alternately each year) but couldn't figure out how to have both the trellis and the hoop run. With your idea of using 8ft panels that will give me the flexibility to have the trellis and also rotate which will be the hoop run. The added bonus of having greenhouses for colder weather for growing is great too! Thanks again!
Awesome! Yeah I really like that shirt, had to get it. So glad you found this helpful, I was really hoping to add a new thought process and new possibilities to something that people already loved. Why not make them as functional as possible.
i was starting to give up on the idea of using cattle panels for the trellises i want to build because of not having the transportation to get the 16 ft panels home. thanks for this video!!
I really hope this helps and you get your trellises
For the low tunnels...You would not need to staple both ends to either side of the center bed. Staple only the end that remains permanently in place. For Summer, you want to lift the other end of the panel to form a high tunnel. Staple a narrow board to that free end. Use that narrow board to anchor some variation of hook and eye hardware so that the free end of the panel can be readily attached and detached for its dual purpose. That way you could avoid laborious nailing and nail pulling or some very tedious tying and untying.
What a great idea! Thanks for sharing.
I don’t know how the UA-cam algorithm works but this was literally my problem: trying to figure how to transport those massive 16 foot panels in my crappy car. This is a genius idea
Great info thanks for sharing! Panels are something we have to invest in soon. Next year I'm going back to pole beans. My back can't handle the bush type.
I tried bush beans one year and that was enough for me!
Great video! Thanks for all the ideas. Also, I love your Roots & Refuge shirt😃.
You should hae a black swan bingo card and put it up behind you. Might be interesting. This year, anything can happen.
This is so clever! I'm going to try this during this growing season!
It's been working for me for a few years, hope it works for you as well
I appreciate your ideas! Thanks so much!
Great point about fitting the eight footers. Cool duel use as far as low tunnel or high.
thank you for posting this. Been trying to figure out how to get the panel home. I think the 8 foot is more manageable
