From my memory, the main collectable eggs are normal lizard eggs that the main villain stole and is mutating to create an army and invade the multiverse. The first boss is an example of the kind of monster that's created if the eggs are allowed to fully mutate and fall back under his clutches.
That's a neat mechanic... you're spot on that it should have been highlighted!
It would have made the game stand out so much more, and would have a bigger following if people didn't think it was a Spyro clone
