Ugh, so real! Thanks for bringing this topic to the table guys. My game room is one giant reminder of how my addictive personality can get off the hook. I had to draw the line last year. Especially how I got so hooked on the nostalgia. I realized I was collecting and had stopped playing, doing it for all the wrong reasons. Reggie, I have always given you props for collecting only what you like to play. My game collecting obsession started going south fast when I deviated from that basic principle. Spent a lot ($1000’s) on games I probably will never touch, money that could have been invested into my family. Ouch, still hurts but my wife got my butt in check now 😂. Still lovin the games but it’s cool now, a low boil indeed. Thanks guys, nice to know I’m not alone.

I went through that and stopped buying classic games a few years ago because I need to finish off my PS1/PS2/PS3/PS4 games I bought over the years and also the SEGA Saturn but I think sadly I'll have to let that one go because I don't think I'll ever get to it to play the games for that system

I’m the opposite, with how big my backlog is I can’t justify buying a game at full price knowing I’m not going to really be able to exclusively play that game as my primary entertainment, and buy the time I do get to putting serious time into it it’s price has gone down. The last game I bought day one was Persona 5, actually bought it twice ( orig & Royal ) and then it came out on game pass and I’ll probably pay for it when Microsoft says it’s about to leave. And I still haven’t got past the second dungeon on any of them

I can definitely relate to this video. I recently started trimming my gaming collection and sold a whole bunch of Gameboy systems and games because they were just sitting in a box tucked away in a closet. There's gaming and collecting, and then there's hoarding. When collecting starts to become addiction leading to hoarding, your games start to own you. Declutter/trim down, it will free your mind. Where's the line? Buying games you have no interest in playing, but as mentioned, to keep up with the joneses.

    • @AGoodVibe
      @AGoodVibe Рік тому +1

As with any hobby, you can get very heavily invested in it thinking more of the profit aspect of said hobby (from buying & reselling) and when a hobby reaches that point it's not really a hobby then. It becomes more of a side hustle.
Then there's the whole wanting or feeling like you _need_ to keep up from watching what content creators and influencers show.

The majority of the time, any time I purchased a collector's edition, I left iI sealed and also bought a regular copy to open and play. But recently I decided to slowly sell off my collector's editions in order to purchase some expensive grails. As much as I love those collector's edition boxes and the artwork, they didn't actually add any more games to my library. I have used the cash from some of those collector's editions to buy some rare games and I expanded my game library as a result. I am happy that I made that decision.

I target my collecting of games mainly to JRPGs. I dont really collect industry wide but there will be certain games that come out not in that specialty I will still get. KAG is on point with the AAA games. If you arent trying to play that thing immediately, let that price come down. Finding time to play a lot of what I buy is near impossible especially due to my collecting focus being long af games. What I will say is that I am passionate about games in that genre so when I get into one, I'm in deep. I will always aim for physical titles first but I do have to wonder if we will ever see a digital storefront? Great discussion guys, thank you!

Any live service games(MMO, Battle Royale etc) are not worth getting a physical copy. Same goes with physical discs that doesn't have the game inside them like any of the Call of Duty games that comes right after Advance Warfare where you need online authentication to activate the game and download the rest of the game data from their server or some of the Telltale games with incomplete chapters. Also beware of some of the Ubisoft titles like Assassin's Creed Valhalla, their physical copy of the DLC does not have any disc inside them, just a download code.

I had to slow down and reduce my collection by quite a bit in recent months. We don't have a ton of space for a game room or gaming area, so most of my stuff just stays in boxes, outside of my absolute favorites and games I am currently playing. I reduced my collection by about 15% just to make some more room. It will also allow me to focus on buying games that I REALLY want, rather than just buying because something is on sale or looks interesting. It is kind of sad to let some of them go, but at the same time it is a little liberating having some more space for the big hitters I want to grab in the future. As far as Collector's Editions go, I only get those when they are for my absolute favorite franchises so I only have a handful of them.

Yea for me I just don't target collectors editions for any game, last one might of been SWTOR years ago, at least it got a nice statue. For collecting I pretty much go for games I plan to play and collect slowly and wait for the cheapest price for a complete copy. A lot of the games that influencers showcase look cool but I think you got to know what genres that would actually hold your attention, because if it don't, why buy it. Try never to get FOMO just because something might be rare or valuable. I would rather have a small curated selection that I can more then likely grab any game and love, then a large complete collection with a ton of junk games that aren't worth shelf space.

I have always collected games because I want to play them and they were super cheap. When the prices are too much I don't buy unless I really want it. The deals that I have gotten were just too good to pass up. I have so many games that space is a problem. Prices on a lot of games are realy high now like everything. This has made it much easier for me to buy games because I simply am not getting the deals I used to get. I have definelty slowed down since 2020. I buy games I really want to play and the new ones coming out. I am pretty much done collecting the older stuff because its too much money.

-Collecting only and truly console exclusives
-If its multiplatform and available on PC(get it on PC digitally)
-Only get special/collectors edition if its a game/series that im passionate about
-Should have only 1 copy of a game/Take best version and sell other

Game collecting takes not only money but time. Searching for titles, hunting for deals, storing and organizing the acquisitions, etc. As an adult we often have far less free time to play videogames to begin with, and game collecting can end up zapping what little free time we do have available. And once we realize the madness we have been engaging in and try to correct our error by selling the collections, well... all of that takes time too!

But since I play so many different games at once my library has built a lot. Then I start playing more of one game than another and I can’t even remember where I left off or the story to the other. I’m trying to dwindle down what I’m playing and play through one game at a time. This being said it is fun having a library of games I haven’t played to pick from when I’m ready. I can’t remember the last time I bought a game and immediately played it. Then finding the time to play is a different story….

I've dialed back my collecting alot in the past couple years. I got alot of games still sealed as well. I just started thinking 1 day, I'm never gonna be able to get to half these games. I'm married with kids so I don't have alot of time to game, my kids aren't interested in console gaming, only their cell phone games 🙄 so I think I'm not too far off from just moving on. Kinda sad but I think I'm aging out 🤣. I'll probably still watch your channel tho Reg!

I'm at the point where I have way too much to fit into a single room and it's basically taking over my entire living space. I've stopped buying a lot of collectors editions, especially because they're so expensive and the boxes they come in are so huge, but I'm still picking up a lot of the limited edition consoles. There are very few new releases that I'll buy on day one and I have a ridiculous amount of sealed physical copies going all the way back to PS2 and Gamecube era that I always meant to play but never got around to. As prices continue to go up, I'll probably start to slowly sell off parts of my collection, since I'm mostly prioritizing PC and handhelds now.

I stopped collecting like 5 years ago. I only buy what I want to play. I mostly just use my flashcarts and odes to play games. I use LaunchBox on the pc as well. I don't need to buy anything retro anymore.

Whilst I’ve not bought many retro games in the last couple of years, I started to slip into the boutique retailer fomo trap. In the end I got tired of paying up front and having so many pre-orders that I wouldn’t see for many months, at times there were just too many games coming up for pre-order I thought I really wanted. Now I’m prepared to miss out, I kind of miss the days when I just bought a handful of major releases per year and they was that. I’ve noticed that many LRG titles end up on eBay or some online retailers, so even if there is a slight mark-up I’ll get the ones I want when they are in stock and ready to ship, if not then I’ll live without it.
I tend to avoid most collectors editions, I love owning a physical copy of a game but with any of the CEs I have I remove the game from the fragile cardboard collectors box, look at the extras once and then never look at it again, the game case goes with the rest of my games and the CE box goes into a storage box out of the way. The RE 4 CE looks great but the regular edition is the one I’ll go for next month!

I drew the line 3 years ago, what's the point of collecting if I'm not going to Enjoy them when Im dead or if they get stolen or burned in a fire, just taking up space in my house, switched to DIGITAL and have all my games saved in a SSD which will outlast any physical disc, cartridge as they have longer life spans, going digital was the best decision I ever made and I can carry them all at once instead of picking and choosing what to play one at the time.

  • @Dbzlatino27

Facts just buy what you are gonna play, whether i have or not the money to get a buch of games the important is just go for what you actually gonna play and enjoy, i do not have an huge game room and netiher plan to but i slowly getting the ones that interest me and actually play them and in between them those who i fall in love with are the ones in which sometimes i put a little more of money just to get something like an collector edition just because i want to have something more of it due to how much it means the game to me.
Never got into gaming for an investment ( neither plan to do it) it was and still is because of passion, also i almost never let me influate by anyone when i get into some game instead is just by curiosity or wanting to play some kind specific of genere that depending of the season i discover some one and if i got hook and im really digging it i investigate about it and try to play all of them.

Another thing to remember wrt collecting videogames as an "investment" is that it's risky. Even if a game is rare and pricey, it has very slow liquidity if you want to get all that it's worth. I ran into a financial pinch recently and even though I have many rare games that I could sell, there's not many people who are willing to buy it right away--EXCEPT for resellers who always want to buy it for well under market value, so they can make a profit. Theres way better long-term investments out there.

Rare games w niche audiences can take a long time to sell, in my experience. Unless you sell for cheap to speed up the process.

there's a very strong sheep mentality in game collecting especially when comes to youtubers and their subscribers. know your limits when collecting pretty much anything. i never understood the need to buy special edition of a game and keep it sealed then buy the same game again. like it dumb and waste of money just say you have one sealed.

I had a few big box collector's editions.
I had the Octopath Traveler Wayfarer edition. It was cool and came with the storybook. While I love the game, I had no space for it and decided to sell it (less than what I paid) and just got the standard edition of the game.
I also got launch editions of games but there never seemed to be standard editions of them. Their cool but some of them take up space. I like the kind of launch editions that fit in the shelf with other games. 13 Sentinels is an example. It came with an art book but the design of the box was unintrusive. Just an outer sleeve with the book and the game

It’s rough and I know it’s an addiction. I don’t buy physicals anymore because I already game to the point where I said it was taking up too much space, going digital made it worse because games are more readily available and cheap. Fomo and justifying your purchases like I have this ps5 or sick gaming pc so I need to get content for it are bad motivators. But I think I’m getting to an age now where I know my run will be coming to an end and I don’t need to be apart of what happening now. I’ve got more games than I could ever finish over the rest of my life, which is a waste

The only game I’ve bought recently at close to full price was NBA 2K23 because I wanted to play it there and then. I pretty much buy it every second year.
As for special editions, I’d prefer to buy a special edition as a complete edition once it’s all patched up so I’ve actually got the full finished game on the disc. To be honest I’d love this to happen with regular editions too.
I tend to buy my games second hand. I have close to 70 Xbox One/Series X games and have paid over $20 for maybe 5 to 10 of them. And don’t get me started on 360 games. Physical games are often much cheaper than digital due to the second hand market which obviously doesn’t exist in the digital world. Off topic, but I also think that this is partially why the Xbox Series S is a false economy.
Anyway, I’m starting to go off topic so I’ll just say thanks for the video and end it there.

Another two reasons to wait on buying triple A games: in general they age poorly and they will get a remaster sooner or later. But I would never recommend buying games just because you think the price will spike. Even with limited print runs. If you're not excited to play it right now, you better don't buy it. It will save you a lot of money, space and time in the long run.
