I liked your idea and didn't want to wait for the how to. I used maple/walnut scraps and polyurethane to seal them up the inside and out. Thanks for the inspiration.
Well done Dave, this should be a hit for a lot of woodworkers especially with mother's day next week. I can easily see a lot of guys doing this with their kids! Thanks for sharing :-)
I need to make a planter for some succulents and remembered you had a video on it, so I figured it'd be a great place to start to get the ideas flowing. I forgot just how much your presentation style has evolved over the years. Great video, but it could use your tunes. :)
Nice work! love the choice of wood, nice contrast. On another note, a friend just gave me a Scroll Saw book, that has a bunch of patterns for making boxes, and I will be attempting to make a planter for me lady.
nice project dude - slow clap... i like how you can take something boring like a little planter, add a little twist to it (plywood edge) and make it look rad.
HI Dave Just shows what you can do with a few basic tools and a creative mind. Good tip on the epoxy up the sides. That makes for a nice smooth waterproof finish. This one is posted on the "to make" list. Drink on!!!
I'm currently constructing a built in wine storage unit for a former closet, I have 7 cutting boards waiting to be finished, two 2x3 foot planter boxes waiting for lining and a jointer that's in pieces being restored. So I guess I should have said I wanna quick finish the PROJECTS I'm working on. Lol. ;-)
Hi, I just found your channel. I think that this project is a great idea. I can't wait to try it this weekend. Especially that I just got a band saw, I have looking for projects to do. Thanks alot!!!!
I love this! I saw these when you were showing what you were taking to your craft show and they caught my eye! Definitely will be on my to do list! I know that these type plants take very little water when watering. Epoxy is a pretty good sealant but not perfect.. have you had some of these in action for some time? Just curious how they hold up. Again, excellent little project. Can't imagine anyone not wanting one!!
Really liked this project. Just a question/comment. It would be easier to drill the hole on the drill press if you drill the hole before you cut the bevels.
I know this is quite an old video, but I have a dumb question about wood in general as it pertains to this project. I am a newbie with a bias for hardwoods over soft. I have a good stock of well aged hardwoods from going to estate sales in rural areas. I glued up walnut and ash together for the octagonal version. I had a hard time sanding sides on my disc sander, even burning it. So I was very hesitant to try to take off the beveled bottoms via sanding. Is this because ash is super dense? Or am I the super dense one here not knowing how to disc sand? I know if I did this in pine and cedar, it would be easy as can be. Any wood recommendations for me?
These are great! I just started learning woodworking, I still don't recognize some of the tools. What kind of bit are you using to drill the holes? Thanks, cheers
Nice pots great idea. However you should ware gloves and a mask when using this sort of Epoxy it will burn your skin, and gives of toxic fumes until it is dry, so only use in a well ventilated area
what about the oxygen can the roots breathe because of the epoxy it makes no sense to spent a lot of time in building these pretty succupots and than the succus may die just a question no critical words may i say best regards from germany
most people have a drill so you dont need a drill press. You dont need the band saw if you have a hand saw maybe or just keep the corners at 90 degree angles and round them a bit with sand paper
G'day, I was wondering if you have a video on the clamp you used to hold the planters when drilling. I am making some small oil holders that I need to clamp somehow and I am having troubled sorting it out. What I mean it here - ua-cam.com/video/FxUNsYdjzx4/v-deo.html Any information greatly appreciated.
A friend gave me a small planter for Christmas with plants n soil already in it. It's about 7" long by 3 1/2 inches wide by 5 inches tall. No drainage made of a cement like material. He bought it at plant shop. I barely watered it every 2 weeks as I was told. I mean barely as in 1/4 cup. But the roots went bad and plants died... Still has soil and gravel in it. So Cactus will do well in it?
David, you and Steve Ramsey are totally vibing this week. Nice project!
Our MENstrual cycles have aligned! ;)
Ha!
You make it look so easy! Great tutorial!
I liked your idea and didn't want to wait for the how to. I used maple/walnut scraps and polyurethane to seal them up the inside and out. Thanks for the inspiration.
I'd love to see them!
Great project David, wonderful Mothers Day gift.
Those are cool. A fun weekend project, that looks very classy.
I'm impressed with your band-saw lines! Mine lines look like a 4 year old cut them out
Well done Dave, this should be a hit for a lot of woodworkers especially with mother's day next week. I can easily see a lot of guys doing this with their kids! Thanks for sharing :-)
Thanks!!
Best woodworking Show on UA-cam! Great Host, great builds, awesome videos. PERIOD.
I've recently started in woodworking and this is a perfect 1st little project
I really like how you mix up different wood types for your projects. It always makes your project look extra fantastic. Keep up the great work!
I hope I have time to make a few of these before Mother's Day! Thanks for the great video!
No to je úžasný nápad, vypadají moc dobře

Very nice!
Hey Dave, Good idea using the Jorgensen clamp to hold the work piece, I’ll remember that one.
Thanks Jon. On the drill press is the only time I ever use that clamp. Comes in handy.
Great, quick project David! Think I'll be adding a few of these to the to-do list. Thanks!
Great planter David, I liked them when you were getting ready for your show and going over the stuff you were going to bring...Good Stuff :-)
nice project dude - slow clap... i like how you can take something boring like a little planter, add a little twist to it (plywood edge) and make it look rad.
I really like these, so it looks like I'll be making a few. I see a wood turning project here as well.
HI Dave

Drink on!!!
These turned out beautifully. Can't wait to make a set. (:
Already added to the list of things to make! :-) nice one.
These are beautiful mate!!!
Now I wanna quick finish the project I'm working on so I can make a few of these. So many projects so little time.
It's ok to work on multiple projects at once. ;)

Great video, David. I may have a project to work on this evening.
Thanks Dyami! If you make some I'd love to see them.
I'm photographing them now.
Looks like a good way to make cool wooden coffee mugs too!
Fantastic work David
great idea. another well constructed video! I've been eyeballin your planters since your pre handmadeshow post.
Hi, I just found your channel. I think that this project is a great idea. I can't wait to try it this weekend. Especially that I just got a band saw, I have looking for projects to do. Thanks alot!!!!
Great little project David, Cheers Harry
I LOVE word work and love suculentas...
on my To Do List, Awesome Video David
Thanks!
You have come a long way.
David,
Nice quick project. I like the plywood accent like that of the Chicago BS box. Who would have thought????
Keep 'um comin'.
JimE
Thanks!
Great job as always!

I have some beer mugs coated with epoxy that have lasted over a year. I'm pretty sure they'll hold up fine for many years. Thanks Chris!
Very nice. Real cool project. Thanks for sharing.
Well done.
they look great, looking forward to more projects, thanks for sharing.
thanks!
Great designs as always, thank you for sharing!
This is so interesting I will try this someday😍
Been looking forward to this. Fun little project. I hope to make these when I have some serious tools like used in the video.
You don't need serious tools. You could get by with a $30 jig saw and some sandpaper. :)
ha! maybe a new blade will put a bandage on that relationship. :)
Very nice. I'm already thinking of some alternate designs.
If you make any I'd love to see them!
Glad I found this channel good job !!!!
Thanks man!
Great looking but they need a drain hole to let the water out or the roots will rot
Excellent
How did you come up with this idea? It's great!
Hello! you have nice toys to play with to make this awesome planters! Mine will b=never look like this lol.Love the video! :)
Great idea.
Really liked this project. Just a question/comment. It would be easier to drill the hole on the drill press if you drill the hole before you cut the bevels.
You have the same soundtrack as Jon Peters! Awww Snap!
Beautiful!
Nice. Like that.
Love this project! So will that be end grain, then, that we're looking at?
Hi David. Please advise as to what you did regarding drainage of the potting soil? Fantastic idea.
+Kevin Nefdt No drainage. Cactus require very little water so there's no need to saturate the soil.
really graet idea, the planter looks pretty nice; but difficult to built without an substancial equipment like you have it
Thanks! Most woodworking projects are difficult without tools!
Nice project i was just wondering would it be fine to use normal wood glue instead of epoxy because it also drys quite hard?
David...love your channel and projects....but....you said you have a plan for this planter, but I can't seem to find it. How come?
Really nice... I must make a couple of these. hah
way to cool... u go man

what was the last spray? why you sprayed it for? and w/o epoxy what could be used for waterproofing the wood?
Great idea! How do I make the hole without that equipment? Thanks
Well you could use a forester bit or even a spade bit on a hand drill, as long as you hold it level and be careful
cool !
These are great!
I just started learning woodworking, I still don't recognize some of the tools.
What kind of bit are you using to drill the holes?
Thanks, cheers
Forstner bit.
Well done sir. Is there a special kind of epoxy to use or will any two part epoxy do?
Aaaaand I should have just read the description.
jeremy gunkel I'm pretty sure any epoxy will do.
Nice pots great idea. However you should ware gloves and a mask when using this sort of Epoxy it will burn your skin, and gives of toxic fumes until it is dry, so only use in a well ventilated area
Can you tell me how long it took you to make this
Hello greetings from Mexico.
what type of saw blade you used.. Thank you
You sound like you're actually drunk. At least a bit anyway. Love the channel. You've got my sub.
Joe Doesntcareaboutthis I never ever drink while using power tools. Ever.
what type of 2 part epoxy did you use on the inside?
Hi.can teak and oak be used for this project
what about the oxygen can the roots breathe because of the epoxy it makes no sense to spent a lot of time in building these pretty succupots and than the succus may die just a question no critical words may i say best regards from germany
Really Cool! Thanks for sharing this! Will any epoxy work, or is there a particular sort we should be looking for?
The exact epoxy I use is in the description but I'm pretty sure any epoxy will do.
Thanks, I missed that.
What is the name of the epoxy you are using?
I dont have any of these tools. What are some cheaper alternatives for cutting wood and pressing the hole on them?
Jigsaw and a drill with hole drilling bits, maybe. (Like a forstner bit, it doesn't need to be a drill press).
most people have a drill so you dont need a drill press. You dont need the band saw if you have a hand saw maybe or just keep the corners at 90 degree angles and round them a bit with sand paper
Lol I have zero power tools
What type of blade is that David?
That intro though
lol I like his way of talking
Really cool. Does anyone know of anything that can be used instead of epoxy? I would like to try something that is considered "green."
+Jen D good question! I think shellac will work. It’s all natural and very green.
Thanks! I will look into that! Thanks for taking the time to do this video!
Does anyone know how to still make the inside watertight without paying so much for the epoxy?
The only problem is the wife kills plants faster than I can buy them. LOL Nice project,
Roland
Sounds like my wife. LOL. She can walk by one in the store and they start wilting. HAHA!
Ha Ha Ha They ought to open up a weed killing business
My wife laughed at that one Roland. Trouble is the grass would die and the weeds would live.
LOL
Hey i just notice you didn't put a hole in it for draining.
That’s because it’s a succulent. They only get a couple drops of water
I think about a dozen more clamps on each would have been better. hehe
How do I make succulent cactus?
Confusing! Watching the drunken woodworker, whilst listening to John Peters (woodworker) music.;)
Those HF clamps, ive got so many, better than the bessey ones i own
because when the roots sitting in water the roots may rot
G'day, I was wondering if you have a video on the clamp you used to hold the planters when drilling. I am making some small oil holders that I need to clamp somehow and I am having troubled sorting it out. What I mean it here - ua-cam.com/video/FxUNsYdjzx4/v-deo.html

water drain for the planter ???
Cactus don't need much water so not any drainage required... You don't need to saturate the soil

awesome channel although i have wondered i know u dont drink and use tools but r u a little drunk when u do the talking bits?
You mighta used more than just epoxy soil and lacquer
Already added to the list of things to make! :-) nice one.
