For the two films, perhaps, but for BSG, the precise reverse is true, by any reasonable measure. The original is simplistic 70s cheese compared to the reboot.
Classic War Of The Worlds: Sylvia: Help Me!!!! I'm being attacked by the Sony Trinotron Logo . Reboot War Of The Worlds: Seeing Tom Cruise deal with his teenage son makes me understand why some animals eat their young.
I haven't seen the new Battlestar Galactica, but I loved the original. As for War Of The Worlds, and The Day The Earth Stood Still, the new versions have better special effects of course, but I couldn't help feeling disappointed after watching them. Somehow, I still much prefer the originals.
The Day the Earth stood still 1950’s version: I memorised Klatu Barada Knikto when I was the film on TV as a kid. 40-odd years later, and I still can say those lines without hesitation. The 2008 version was TRIPE! All that money, effects and acting talent, and it was still TRIPE! 1978 Battlestar Galactica was a fave of mine as a 9-year old (who really fancied Starbuck). The 2003 Version was outstanding (and I really fancied almost every character in it this time). It had some of the best music too. It has a special place in my big old bi heart!
What about The Time Machine, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Thing, or Lost in Space, just to name a few sci-fi movies and TV series that have been remade?
Fair point. The original is 1951’s The Thing From Another World. You can think of the 1982 and 2011 movies as separate remakes of the original, or as a single, two-part remake, since the 2011 movie ends almost exactly where the 1982 movie begins. Or are there other remakes that I don’t know about?
@@richardblain4783 Well, if you want to stretch it a little bit, Quentin Tarentino's "The Hateful Eight" was a remake of Carpenter's "The Thing" as well; albeit in a western setting.
War of worlds, I like the 50's version better, though the newer one was closer to the book. I need to watch it again. Original day earth stood still., the newer one lost the real message implied, though closer to how we would react. Battle star toss up. each a product of the times. The newer one went darker, more realistic, though they changed it from alien life forms to human construction.
Spielberg's WotW was a fairly close retelling of the original Wells story; not just the tri-pods but the actual plot as well. He did the best that could be done but Pal's is far and away my favorite.
It is sad that none of the "War of the Worlds" movies, nor the BBC travesty, followed the original novel. The Pal version probably had the best start, but deviated thereafter. The Spielberg version had the best attempt at the storyline, apart from the ridiculous, drawn out beginning. The most faithful reproduction of the H G Wells story so far has been Jeff Wayne's Musical Version.
There actually was a version based on the novel, it was in 2005 directed by Timothy Hines. The movie was long at 3hrs and it was said they did the cg with Apple laptops. It's not bad, but it's not great. It was boring it needed a lot of editing to remove scenes where they basically did nothing like riding carriages from one town to the next. There is a director's cut that's supposed to be shorter by 30,45 mins but I haven't seen it.
Originals all the way, especially in regards to Ron Moore's which should be called "Boringstar Galactica" which degraded into a soap opera and a rip off of the ending to the BBC mini-series of Douglas Adams "Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy", both of which doomed the real natives of Earth by aliens.
To really get the message, you must view both original and modern, then the just of them really hits home, I find this to be true especially with Battlestar galactica
When you consider the technology that each director had at his disposal I have to say the 1953 WOTW was pretty amazing sci-fi. But Speilberg and Cruise did a good remake. On The Day the Earth Stood Still, no question the original wins hands down. Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, Sam Jaffe and Hugh Marlow, plus Billy Gray? Awesome. On BSG, no question the remake was light years better. I had forgotten that John Colicos played Gaius Baltar in the original. A Star Trek legend as Kor.
I believe that oldies movies - as originals, as the first in screen - are the best....but to future watchers ....may be both versions of each film will be candid and naive creations....think about 50 years from now......
originals kept you more interested in the human drama more feeling the new ones only focused on updating the fx but failed with the characters- Classics rule always
The biggest problem with remakes is that someone decides to remake a film because it was a classic. It is not often that a classic is improved. I am not so sure Battlestar Galactica was a classic though. Also , being a remake you sort of already know the film/ending.
I don't care for the reboot of War of the Worlds primarily because I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise. However, after reading the novel recently I discovered that the reboot was actually more faithful to the novel than the original was. The tripods, the red vine, feeding on human blood are all missing from the original are in the novel. The novel takes place exclusively in England which both movies changed.
The originals are normally my go to but the Battle Star Galactica series reboot was outstanding. The reboot of "the Day the Earth Stood still" sucked..my opinion.
(BSG): >Is outstanding. I've missed a few episodes but it does make great watching Friday night/Saturday morning. (The Day The Earth Stood Still 2008): Ever seen an original movie then go to see the remake when it comes out (hear me out here): I already had seen the original and a friend and myself went to see the remake - Somehow my Jedi Powers were on top form, my friend's JPs weren't/aren't too good when it comes to bad movies - but that's not to say I was greatful for the invitation.
I like the original WoW though the 2005 version more matched the book in the design of the ships and general feel of the movie. Though I have seen another remake of it which did an even better job at matching the book, even still I like the original WoW movie.
Basically what Ric Campbell said below. War of the Worlds: Was a visually more attractive remake but it is a dated story anyway and was better suited to the 1950s setting. The day the Earth stood still: Original, no competition. Pretty effects were all the remake had going for it. Battlestar: Unlike others I quite enjoyed the campiness and fun of the original but the remake was definitely the superior story. Got a bit tangled in later seasons but overall a good example of how to get a remake right.
The big flaw in War of the worlds one that was a part of the original book, no alien invasion wouldn't take precautions to stop infections that might cross species. The remake was closer to the book in the visuals and in how people would react to an invasion like that. The day the earth stood still was a fantastic book, the original movie held to that story better than the remake. can't say anything about the BSG remake, I was only able to watch 15 minutes of one episode and never looked at it again. I liked the original, the terror of what networked computers could become back in the early days of networking computers together made it a timely story. From my limited understanding the remake tried to update the driving force behind the story to be current, I think they went the wrong way by doing so.
The question isn’t which do you prefer. The question should be why we have not learned? It’s the same storylines with more introspection. Yet, no understanding of concept by us. We are so full of ourselves, that we can live with the death of so many. At the same time deceive ourselves into thinking, over there it will be better. We will raise again.
1953 War of the worlds by far much better than the attempt in 2005! 1st Planet of the Apes - a Classic not better than the Mark Whalberg version Analogous to Coke and Pepsi - both Good but in thier own way.
When Hollywood runs out of story ideas they become vultures to the classics .Today it is worse .Not only are they rebooting classics , they are HORRIBLE and usually done with a preachy political message or redone with women in traditional male lead characters
War of the Worlds 1953 over the 2005 parody, I felt like laughing all through that dreadful remake. The Day the Earth Stood Still 1951 had a message that has stood the test of time, the 2008 version? Errm what did it have that was memorable? Nothing. As for Battlestar Galactica, the original TV series was an easy to follow and well made story, the remake though, dear me it was so convoluted and drifting from here to there to over there to well who knew? The final episode was a relief, which this viewer skipped to without really paying attention to the rest of the garbage. So maybe I'm an old fuddyduddy but I do know I would rather watch quality over crap any day of the week, especially with cutting out politics, drama and most especially the recent rise of the ego of certain movie 'stars' over the actual story, yes War of the worlds 2005, I'm looking at you. Thank you for putting together, it's been interesting.

The 1953 version of War of the worlds was way better that the 2005 movie. Special effects don't make a movie better. Like wise the 1951 version of Day the Earth Stood Still was better than the 2008 version.
The George Pal 1953 War of the Worlds far superior to the Tom Cruise version although Spielberg did try to return to some of the original story machines and the terraforming. Absolutely!
True, but I still think the Pal's Martian War Machines cannot be beat.

A very nice video which compares the right iconic scenes. Well done!

The classics are always better. Never once have I seen an exception to that rule.
Would you apply that verdict also to Flash Gordon and Buck Rodgers? Buster Crabbe was good, but at least for me not the ultimate incarnation.
OG The Day the Earth Stood still - first version.
Respect the classics man....
Classic battlstar galatica, war of the worlds &the day the Earth stood still all the way.
Sorry but the remake of BSG was significantly better than the original. Not just effects wise but acting, storyline and of course conclusion.
@@dylanprice2960 sad, pathetic and political. The hackery on the reboot just makes me feel like vomiting.
