  • In this webinar, you will get a deeper understanding on what a hiatal hernia is, how we have had success treating it and the best solution for you.
    Webinar Summary:
Hiatal Hernia Syndrome can be effectively treated by addressing the root cause through a personalized program that includes normalizing and treating the gut, addressing structural effects, balancing and toning core muscles, and considering nerve involvement.
    00:00
People with Hiatal Hernia Syndrome often experience a range of symptoms that are misdiagnosed as stress or acid reflux, leading to ineffective treatment and compromised digestion in the long term.
    04:35
Hiatal hernia syndrome can be resolved by addressing the root cause, which includes normalizing and treating the gut, addressing structural effects, balancing and toning core muscles, and considering nerve involvement.
    07:51
Food sensitivities and poor diet are internal causes of hiatal hernia syndrome, and testing for imbalances in the gut can alleviate symptoms such as bloating, gas, acid reflux, constipation, and diarrhea.
    11:47
Hiatal hernia syndrome has various root causes and requires a tailor-made program to address symptoms such as shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and panic attacks, as conventional medicine's approach with antacids is not effective and has negative side effects.
    15:08
Hiatal Hernia Syndrome can cause intense gut symptoms, even in small or subclinical hernias, and there are myths that there is no cure or natural therapy, but this is not true.
    17:23
A personalized program is the cure for Hiatal Hernia Syndrome, addressing the root cause rather than relying on drugs, with an emphasis on the body's ability to heal itself.
    20:16
Committing to lifestyle changes and identifying the root cause with Root Cause can successfully treat Hiatal Hernia Syndrome, resulting in symptom resolution and improved sleep and energy levels with an 85% success rate.
    22:38
The root cause hiatal hernia syndrome program is tailored to each individual with an integrated approach from a team of doctors, and a free 30-minute consultation is offered to determine if it's a good fit for the patient.
Get lasting relief from your symptoms through treatment at Root Cause Medical Clinic - the #1 Clinic Treating Hiatal Hernia Syndrome Naturally

My brother and I cycle in nearby mountains. He was diagnosed decades ago with a very moderate hiatal hernia. But it only ever bothers him every few years. He just puts some water in his mouth and drops hard onto his heels while gulping down the water to resolve that. He used to sometimes experience a very short, sharp pain in his upper-left chest between the throat and the nipple. He would then experience palpitations for about 10 minutes. He would finally burp and all symptoms went away. He learned that if he quickly swallowed a fizzy drink before cycling, he would then burp and have no more chest pain or palpitations cycling up the hills. 2 years now and no more problems.

It’s great that your practice helps to correct the root causes of the problems. I recently started to limit all sugar from my diet including cutting out bread, baked goods, junk foods and fried foods. I eat Salmon, Cod grilled chicken, eggs and vegetables. I also fast for 16 hours a day. I have GERD, Hiatal Hernia and Fatty Liver Disease. The American Diet is to blame. Some Doctors only prescribe drugs, but do little if anything to help people solve the root cause. I was told many times that my panic attacks and palpitations were all in my head. I wish I found your practice much sooner.

It saddens me that are health care system is so messed up in the U.S. Doctors really don’t care. They are stuck in their ways and just want their work day to be over like everyone else. It’s a shame we pay so much in healthcare costs for poor quality help. I salute this doctor for thinking outside the box. 😁

Omigosh 1000xs worse in SA. All I have learnt has come from alternative drs on US on internet and Dr Gupta from York in UK. The struggle just makes one feel hopeless when all drs. here look at you and treat you as if its all in the head. I have even developed lymph cancer in psoas, which I swear has to do with longterm ppis and this is the 1st time in my journey of trying to find answers, which began 2011, that I have even heard psoas is connected to this problem. I always feel like info comes one puzzle piece at a time and sooooo slowly, with constant searching, that there are times I could howl with hopelessness and frustration, especially seeing I cant get any dr to listen to me or take me seriously.😢😢😢 Thabk you for this channel and info I hsve just found.

Private issurance is worthlesss since we are supposed to have ntnl health they dont cover much, so you end up paying twice, once thru your taxes and then repaying in private care. Drs. decided to profit from their turf as much as poss . So we get less and less svce and their costs keep riising.....

Been to primary care on a regular different specialist & hospital visits to only diagnosing anxiety & obesity. I don’t have allot of heartburn unless I eat something to agitate it I really don’t experience allot of pain with my hiatal hernia either but I do experience all the other symptoms & it’s just getting worse. I have Spinal Imbalances with Cervical Instabilities, which are affecting so much in my body I am a sufferer for decades! I'm 72 and much of this all started when i was 31 or so. I point out that per a Cervical MRI - my first taken - in 2012 denoted that I have a More Narrow Than Normal Spinal Canal. According to the Mayo Clinic - only 5% of the population have this abnormality. With the amount of OA in my spinal discs, DDD throughout, Lumbar / Thoracic Dextroscoliosis of 25 degrees (created by a Leg Length Discrepancy of a 1" shorter right leg as a result of a Femur fracture in 1966).

Wow this has opened my eyes to what has been a problem for me since 2018..
My initial symptoms where feeling bloated and chest pains which caused me to panic thinking it was a heart attack I was diagnosed with stress panic disorder and prescribed ssri’s which I refused to take..
I coped with the panic attacks and became anxious not knowing when I’d have another episode and have managed to cope since that point..
Ive always had acid reflux but usually treat this with over the counter antacid treatments and thought nothing of it untill recently i had what I thought was a sore throat from hell which wouldn’t go away..
Went to see gp and was referred to endoscopy to find I have a 2cm sliding hiatal hernia and barrats osophagus..
The syndrome to speak of is exactly what all my symptoms are since 2018 and the doctors never picked up on it at that point and said it was mental health issues.
Every symptom you said I have had for a long time now and i now realise the pressure in my chest the bloatedness and shortness of breath are because I have thos syndrome and have been mis diagnosed back in 2018..
I just need to work out how to get this sliding hernia to go down and to stay down becauese even at 56 years old I have fabulous core strength and regularly go to kickboxing and mainatain a healthy weight..
My diet is appalling to be honest and this is what’s caused gerd to begin with but ive leant more about this condition in one video than any doctor could have told me for years thanks for this info I feel I can try to resolve something now that I know exactly what it is I’m suffering with ❤❤

The root cause for me was childhood trauma. After spending my life savings on how to manage my hernia without surgery I finally figured out what caused mine.
Once I addressed my dysregulated nervous system caused by trauma and did some trauma release work and used a device called Iqoro and following Pam Fox's hiatal hernias, I am finally living a pain free life and can eat anything I want now. I have also stopped drinking alcohol and anything with caffeine because they relax the muscles around where the sphincter is. My years of drinking lots of both didn't help matters any.
My heart goes out to anyone who has a hiatal hernia that is causing them any pain, reflux, anxiety, insomnia, SVT, or more. It took me nearly 20 years to figure all this out and I am so happy to see people like Dr Vikki Petersen addressing this often over looked health issue that 99.999% of health professionals do not know how to treat.

I have now gained about 10 lbs. and it is not going away. I exercise and try to eat properly. I do have a VA doctor who sent me for an endoscopy and results were normal for pathology and for my CT scan. Report showed a Medium Hiatal Hernia. I also now have neck and shoulder pain. I started taking 250 mg of simethicone for relief of the bloating , gases and pressure. I anticipate another appointment with my VA doctor so that we can discuss this further. I'm not able to eat nearly as much as I used to and have cut back on fatty foods. Just hoping for better ideas on how to treat !

I was taking PPIs for almost the entire time. My GI just switched me to something safer last year because he finally listened to me when I said I was worried about long-term side effects. Every meal makes me feel bloated, and I can literally feel all of my organs pushing upward. I get short of breath a lot after eating as well. My quality of life is just awful, and my symptoms are just getting worse, and my doctors are no help at all. I wish there was a root cause clinic near me.

ANOTHER SYMPTOM . I had tingling in my calves and in the center of my feet. Once I was diagnosed with hiatal hernia and started to do my own research; I started doing belly breathing exercises and the tingling in my legs and feet stopped. What I've concluded from that was somehow nerves were being compressed and affected my body elsewhere.

This is completely true what you say.
The worst is still when we don't sleep well our toughts are affected and if we had bad habbits then the stronger paths in our brain are still most ofen chosen unconciously and bacause of this we eg eat each meal bigger (even is a bit bigger and healthy, it doesn't matter !, even you have great ABS muscles and entire body) than we should again. We do so many other things which we shouldn't because of that disrupted mechanism, a chain triggered by dysregulated body - mind connection. It's like a neverending loop. That's the biggest issue !

I haven't been diagnosed yet, but I can relate to 95% of this informational video. I went to the ER and they said I was full of stool and sent me home with magnesium citrate and a script for colace 100mg twice daily for 10 days. I do feel constipated (not able to fully empty my bowels and less frequent bowel movements), however, my main complaint is epigastric pain. Right under my breast bone. Some gerd but nothing crazy and some heart burn. I also get this weird wheezing feeling on occasion. I eat a whole foods diet with plenty of water and fiber. I had to eliminate fruits and honey because they caused me to have sharp pain along with the constant ache in my diaphragm. Also burping frequently. Leading up to the constant dull ache and occasional sharp pains in the epigastric area, I felt a weird sensation in my esophagus. Like something was stuck in there. I do intermittent fasting and often eat a large meal in the evenings. I can't do that currently as I get severely bloated and get heart burn. The dull ache weirdly subsides for a little while after eating only to return a couple hours later. I do get heart palpitations as well... I should mention I was on SSRI for 22 years and recently got off of them(15 months ago) but have been having a ton of psychological and physical symptoms. It's been a rollercoaster ride in hell, honestly... I have a few appointments with my PCP and a GI doctor as well as a naturopath doctor this week. I live in Bradenton . It looks like you're close by. If I get the diagnosis I'm thinking I'll get I'll probably reach out to you for help in the near future. Very Blessed to have found your video! Take care.

This is frustrating… I’ve spent so much in doctors fees, getting tests done, and prescriptions of PPI’s, anxiety meds, etc. I finally got an upper endoscopy and found out I have this. And put together the pieces myself. Whenever I asked if this might be linked to my heart/lung/stomach complaints - and always was met with a shrug and no.

I'm in the uk I could cry, you've described all of the symptoms ive suffered for 18+years which is how long ive been on PPI's, started with heart issues, and been on low dose Asprin too for many years, I also have a large incisional hernia very low down my right abdomen after an emergency c section almost 18 years ago, they won't repair this because my weight is too high so until I drop 20kgI'm on my own, utterly miserable and finding weight loss very difficult, I'd like to come off the PPI's but I tried once and it got worse and caused hypersecretion, do you have a method to come off PPI's?

My pulse drops to the low 50's but my blood pressure gets very high. A nitroglycerine tablet seems to give me some relief. My cardiologist didnt find anything wrong with my heart. I was diagnosed with a moderate hiatal hernia . I had suspected that it might be some kind of esophageal spasm causing my chest pains but I couldn't find much information. Neither my cardiologist or gastrologist were interested in discussing the possibility a correlation. I consider my fundoplication surgery a success. I was having terrible acid reflux and regurgitation, only partially relieved by omeprazole. The only other symptom I had as this progressed was severe iron deficiency anemia (hemoglobin of 4). I had none of the other symptoms you described. Post surgery, I had to go back on omeprazole due to trouble swallowing. I don't know why this happening, because the endoscopy shows that things are healing, and no Barret's esophagus. The PPIs keep the dysphasia in check, but my bone density scans show osteoporosis. As you say, every case is different.

If I lay on my right side, I fall into a deep sleep REM. However, this is when I often wake up nervous and breathless and sometimes experience extreme tachycardia. I have talked to my cardiologist, GP, endocrinologist etc and of course there's no answer. They say the symptoms are unrelated.
Yet, when I sleep on my right side I feel I'm causing compression to my stomach, pancreas or liver. It is difficult for me not to turn on my right side during sleep because I have a difficult time falling asleep most nights.
I was eventually admitted to hospital due to diabetes and dizziness where I was told I had VVS and was prescribed anti-vertigo medication.

It seems to have no rhyme or reason sometimes it will happen for a few days in a row, then not again for a month or so. Sometimes I have the tummy thing with no heart palpitations. but I don’t think I ever have the palpitations without the tummy thing! Rubbing or pushing downward at the hiatus area seems to help so it’s definitely related!

@DrVikkiPetersen is it surgery you are meaning for your success? I'm from England and our NHS is that bad it's terrifying, they actually scare me with their negligence and malpractice.
I'm in a bad way with all these symptoms too and I would travel if I could be fixed.

I have acid coming up for about a month causing me to cough and wheeze. Its horrible. I can’t even get a good nights sleep. It mimics sinus congestion and I’ve even lost my sense of smell to this. Can this be corrected?

Hi Dr Petersen, Ive just discovered your channel, I have a Hiatal Hernia ( very large)I was diagnosed about 2 years ago, I've been suffering with it for 6+ yrs that I know of, I'm nearly 66yo I'm on a waiting list for surgery BUT would RATHER NOT! I'm in Australia how do I find a doctor like yourself? & why after surgery can you not VOMIT?? I really DON'T want surgery BUT I also don't want to live with the excruciating pain & hours of it & not to mention the vomiting for hours & being hospitalised because it's so bad. MY comment symptoms are Chest pains, serve left abdominal pain, vomiting & back pain.

You would need to find a Functional Medicine doctor who specializes in this. I'm so sorry you've been so miserable. Once the hiatal hernia is large, surgery might be your only alternative. You can't vomit afterwards because they literally wrap the neck of your stomach around your esophagus. I wouldn't advise surgery unless that was your only alternative. I wish you lives closer.

I had a big acid reflux problem. I was told I had a hiatal hernia. I stopped eating carbs and sugar and did intermittent fasting. Immediately my reflux stopped and my sleep apnea also disappeared along with many other health benefits!!!!! Do keto!

Diet is key. My chiropractor said eat more protein preferably beef and seafood and dark meat chicken. Also take betaine hydrochloride with meals to break down protein. Low carbs too. No sugar. It works.

Im into the naturopathic way to fix this and I know a lot about it but I don't know much about hernias I think I just need supplements the correct foods for acid and proper exercises and some activities that I do that could be aggravating it .my gi doctor said I can lift weights but that don't make sense to me when I workout sometimes it flares up . I am starting to take seed symbiotic s but sometimes I can't sallow their horse pills seed does work. Is it ok for me to open the capsules and dump them in water .man this hernia got me all f 'd up . 😢

I never had any hernia symptoms before until i did a gastroscopy i don’t know if it irritated something there but I feel the worst in my left sternum just above the stomach.. is it possible that the scope made it worse?
