- In this video I go over the process of creating three different styles of Candy dice using food safe silicone! Two out of three still counts as a win right?
In this video I create molds from a food safe silicone (Smooth-Sil 940) to make molds for creating candy dice. I make some hard candy dice, though those do NOT turn out all that well, as I think I messed up the ratios. I also make chocolate dice and gummy dice that I think turned out MUCH better!
Have you ever dreamed about just EATING YOUR DICE as soon as you roll a critical fail? Well now you can! All my Dice Goblins have asked for edible click clacks for a long while, so I figured I owed it to you all to make what you want, even if some of the results are probably not what you expect.
I did a parody of Binging with Babish in the very beginning of the video, and that whole style is ALL him, I take no credit. He is awesome and if you haven't checked him out, you should absolutely do so. He makes amazing food videos from popular media. The funny thing is, there are meat recipes that combine meat and gelatin in a mold pan for something with a little presentation. As I was watching this, I was thinking, "Rybonator could make a big d20 mold for some sort of Jellied turkey recipe or at least the cranberry stuff that's required on the table."
Damn, now I'm hungry for the gobble gobble bird, and it's 4:00 in the morning. Where am I to get a turkey at this hour?

Imagine having a bunch of regular dice with full numbers and when a one is rolled, you eat the die as a punishment to it.

I made my comment before watching the video. It was my assumption that you would put candy inside of dice, not dice made of candy. I apologize deeply for my inappropriate transgressions....

baked beans would be a dream of mine, or just another episode of food in resin dice.
I wonder how the sauce would interact with the resin, it could either be really cool or completely disastrous. Still would be an interesting experiment
@Verity_Reigns I wondered that too, but just imagine if it worked, showing up to your playgroup with baked bean dice. Or even just telling them you tried. I was thinking if you separated the sauce on a paper towel or something, then dyed the resin as the sauce color

My tip for making candy dice: treat the molten sugar like a time bomb that will go off in one minute. It cools down very fast

I’ve always been afraid of leaving it on the burner, just gotta zoom and pour it fast and not focus as much on mixing the color and extract in
And if you are going to use a metal spoon, heating it prior to dipping might help. And I thing a bit of corn starch will help with the sticking problem. I seems to recall seeing that somewhere.
Now, for your next candy dice experiment we shall make skittles dice.
@@Rybonator It might have also been the water based food dye you used. You added a lot to get your pretty red but water in candy makes it really sticky (the lofty pursuits channel explains it really well)

It looks to me like you didn't get the sugar mixture for your candy hot enough. It was sticky like that because it hadn't quite reached hard crack stage. I've always learned that you should aim for 160 degrees Celsius/320 degrees Fahrenheit to make hard candy. A good way to test whether your candy has the texture you want it to have is to get some ice water and pour a little of the boiling sugar mixture into it. That way you can get an approximation of what it will be like when it's cooled down.

I was looking at dice sweets recipes a few weeks for ideas like this! I definitely want to make chocolate ones (and if I’m careful enough, I’m sure I can use different colors of chocolates for inking), but gummies never crossed my mind! I’ll need to look into these ideas before my campaign starts!
The chocolate is by far the easiest. I totally recommend it :)

You could probably paint the chocolate numbers with luster dust if you wanted to be extra fancy.

Yay! I had tried to make molds before and was really over complicating things trying to make full 2 or 3 part molds to get all the sides. I think I just need to simplify and do open faced since it’s just for candy anyways.
Good quality chocolate need tempering so candy coating like you used was the right way to go. If you want to try hard candy again pick up some isomalt. It’ll make it was easier.
Yeah after completing this set, I have a LOT of changes I would do in the future haha. Isomalt is ideal you're right :)
Just leave the one open sided and it is simple to score a one into the chocolate or gummy. Hard candy.. not so much.

That'd be cool! Make it all out of the same resin, so it's less likely to mess with the weight, and may produce a usable set of die.

I tried the chocolate technique. Once I poured the chocolate in the mold, then I ran an electric toothbrush around the outside of the mold and it did a great job getting the chocolate to settle into all the details.

I used to help my mom make hard candies as a kid during christmas and a couple things to improve on. Firstly use a double boiler. It ensures the mix doesn't burn. You can stop the sticking by covering it in powdered sugar. Another fun thing you can do is get citric acid and add it in to make it sour but best to start a small sample on a metal spoon to get it as sour as you want.

I've been waiting for you to do a Babish impression in a video! You totally nailed it. You should get Babish to do one of your episodes, and you do one of his. I think the only difference between you is you have hair on your arms and he has a tiny whisk.
Side note: I know this isn't a novel idea, but what do you think about doing a video on making dice pouches? You have all these other crafts, including dice boxes and several types of dice, now all we need is something to put our shiny click-clacks in. Then once you get past the vanilla pouch, you can make other videos learning embroidering and heat printing. I think that would be a fun mini-series!
I actually tried to make a dice pouch once for a video out of leather, but it got really messed up and I didn't want to show it. I plan to give it a shot again int he future :) Maybe even a couple of different materials/styles!
Also I'm down if Babish is down haha :) I don't think he knows that I exist, but if he does, then let's do this thing big guy!
I gotcha there. I'm an Eagle Scout, so I've worked with leather before. It can be a little tricky. However, let's just say after making about 100 leather pouches for an OA ceremony, you begin to get the hang of it, lol
Then again, if I tried again today, I'd probably make a mess of it, haha

Candy melts, like the compound chocolate you used, come in all kinds of colors. You can find them in the banking aisle at hobby stores like Michaels. You could also add fillings to those like nuts or rice crispies or even small candies like mini m&ms or nerds. Fun video!

The stickiness is from the moisture in the colorant& flavoring. I watch a candy channel a lot (it’s a soda shop is Tallahassee who’s name I cannot remember to save my life) & he’s constantly talking about how he has to stir the colorant to make the liquid in it evaporate or else the candies will be sticky.
It's Lofty Pursuits :) I watch them a lot too! I thought I mimicked their copy, but I guess I didn't get the candy hot enough :/

Next up, I need to do the Crafsman!
So, I use a letter wax sealing furnace and spoon for melting jolly ranchers and then I pour and stamp them, using that type of deep spoon with a small spout on it, I think would have worked really well for this, since the spoon is hot and the amount of liquid hard candy is controlled.
That's a fantastic idea! I would not make nearly the mess with that method haha :)
