- C Quat thought it'd be fun to grow thai basil but wasn't exactly sure of the most convenient way.
In this video, C Quat tested two methods:
1) the smarty pants way
2) the lazy way
Watch or skip to the end to find out which method is better!

I lost several basil due to rotted stems until i figured out that you have to cut above the node, not below it. The stem finally developed nodules and then roots, just planted in dirt!
But if you go with the smart way, you get to enjoy the leaves before you plant.
Nice!!! Thanks, i like the lazy way, for i beleive that planting is fun, a sort of relaxation after a hard days work. 😀😀😀
Wow, that was helpful! I'm subscribing!
I don't know how or what I'm missing, but I've done exactly the same and haven't seen any roots develop
JT probably your climate
What climate does it need?
My climate?
JT hot and humid
lol go to a pho restaurant xD
lost 2 bags full of Thai basil. The stems rotted on all. The basil seemed healthy to start but took a quick turn for the worst.
How did you trim the stem of the smarty-pants ones? it looked like you bent the stem and ripped it in half, yet you meticulously made clean, undamaged cuts to the lazy ones. Not really a fair comparison, is it? I'm surprised the smarty ones lived at all...
I tried both ways all failed ! The reason is it works only with older mature stems , young ones don’t root at all
for younger cuttings I’ll place them in water with a pothos cutting, the pothos creates a ton of rooting hormone very fast. also a drop of superthrive or another micronutrient will help
Onto that now, been striking my Kangkong and Sweet Basil in water, now it's time to get my Thai Basil going too!
Thanks for video
Marty (Australia)
must be different water where i am, they just wilt n dee
I tried millions times & always rotted , any suggestions?
I did mine the lazy way, using stems from the supermarket. I got great root growth. Then, I put three of them in a pot, and two died within a week -- I took them out and the beautiful robust roots had rotted. Argh! It's my first time, so I really don't know what I did wrong.
Did all the Ways myself but been about 14-16 days. I got roots from the store bought ones. However the roots kinda spurted out from the mid section of the stem. Not the tip. The tip actually became really hard instead of rooting or atleast soggy soft. Really strange. I got the root....so I am gonna put in soil now and see what happens.
My stems always rotten. Any tips
my thai basil root . but once i take it out of water and put it into solid it die , why? P.S. solid bought from flower shop which one come from japan use for herbs
This was a great and informative video, thanks!
I ordered Pho last night. Runs to the trash can to try to propagate the last bite of basil 😂
So cheap! In australia that much would cost 30 dollars!!!
thank you, can we put inside the house during winter in US?
What type of sunlight are we looking at?
Should I just leave it indoor? Or full sun?
gonna make some extra sheckels now, thanks!
I tried this but the cuttings ended up rotting.
MacboatASU cutting or equipment probably wasn’t clean or maybe cutting was too long. Try soaking cutting in clean water overnight and then shorten to about 3 inches. If still rots, cut off the rotting end with clean scissors. Hopefully doing this will get things rolling for you. Good luck ~
What potting mix is used?
Lazy works for me on a Sunday
Ok, Phase 2 had me cracking up 😂
Another lazy way... Go to the Store and they have one growing in a Pot for $2.49.... Time = $$$ ... $$$ = Time... Same thing, LOL
LOL, not really. In about a month you'll never have to go to the store again, if you pot it.
thanks! short n to the point!!
In what kind of soil should I plant those rooting Thai basil stems?
gr8 experiments, laziness excels smarties, marvellous finding, cheerio
Thanks for posting. Just what I needed. Cheers!
thanks love what you did
You are my hero
Thank you!
Help!
I saved mine from the restaurant because they were so delicious. They were so sad. I took off all of the leaves but the top 2 leaves. But mine already had flowers, so I took off the flowers too.
It's been 11 days, and no roots.
My 2 leaves look great.
But my problem is mine are on 7 inch tall stems that used to have flowers.
Will they still grow roots?
Should I cut them again? If I cut them again, should I keep the bottom part that has been in water? Or the top part that used to have the flowers?
Nicely done. Thank you for the extra work. I would have done this myself, so thank you.
My wife and myself are thai basil lover. Thank you for sharing . Do you have any extra thai basil cutting can spare ? Iwould like to try it.When is the best time to propagating basil from cutting ?
Thank you so so much !!!!!
