I’m right there with you Reggie. I get so
Frustrated at times when I take a look at my massive backlog especially lately I think “I’m going to start on this game” and then I psych myself out and don’t end up playing anything at all. I need to get out of this slump. I have so many amazing games that many people would die for and yet I can get myself to play them at times.

Same issue here. Gaming is my main passion but I struggle to dive into any game often. One big reason is too many decisions to try and figure out what Im in the mood for. I find its better to just narrow it down to some main entries and just pick one and start with an hour, see if you want to put more time in. If not Ill switch to another main game or fuck around on the emulation PC and try random games.

The dark knight- that’s not a hoarding problem lmao. It’s simple anxiety induced by an overwhelming amount of choices. Fairly common.

    • @MMaRsu
      @MMaRsu 4 роки тому +8

Too many choices makes choosing much harder and instead you end up doing nothing. This is common across all sorts of instances. What I say is focus on a few games you know you'll enjoy, and just play them when you want. Make sure that you dont force yourself to play anything because thats not gonna help either.

Even though I'm a bit older at 57 you & I both share the magic of the original Playstation bringing us full bore into gaming brother, the best of times & still wonderful to return to! Even though I love & appreciate my PS4 Pro & the new gen gaming I find myself more & more being attracted to the 5th, 6th & 7th gen as there was far more experiences & finished games to enjoy without the BS & I could more easily finish them, today a lot of games represent 30, 60 or more hours to get through & burn out can indeed set in.

As Michael Jackson sang, "You are not alone~~" :) My new year's resolution is to play two new games a month. I'm not talking about finishing a game but playing 30-40 minutes... enough time to get an impression of the game. I have so many physical games that I never even popped into the console. I started the original Assassin's Creed a few days ago and I just finished the tutorial scenario :) Mastering the controls has been the biggest obstacle for me for many games.

I completely agree with you on making sure the games you buy have to be the same games you are willing to stick with, and invest time into. Life is way too short to waste on games you aren't even enjoying. You said it best a while back: If you don't like a game, don't force it. You might throw money out on a game, and then its not for you. Its like another thing you said: not every game you buy has to be finished

@Ioannis Stefanakis True, an unfortunate effect from agile project development. I understand that this is an extra requirement for the project teams - ie an increase in resources. but it would be nice if more AAA developers put out game demos featuring a level or small section just to try out the game to see if you like it first. I know many stores offer a refund policy, but sometimes that isn't enough to judge whether or not you'll enjoy the game playing, particularly among the allotted time given. Some games out there take some time to get into them. It's like their development team depends on the consumer to do research before hand to determine if it will be a buy or pass for them.

Great video, I got into game collecting around 2010 and man I'm not the gamer I use to be but I collect way more than I play. I've really gotten to the point where I collect almost for the sake of value and resale but can't resell my stuff cuz I get so attached. Digital games and Switch have recouped my gaming life.
Digital because now I can have more games (also very good sales) without all the clutter.
Switch because it is so practical.
I can game for short bursts and when life duties call I just put it on sleep mode and when I am free again I can instantly start playing again.
This feature has been a real game changer due to the fact that my lifestyle just is not compatible with seating for 2 hours in a row playing in a table console.
I will surely buy the PS5 but doubt it will be played as much as my NS.

    • @AdamReveland

It's really all about the financing. Games today take a lot more money to create than those of yesteryear. Investors are always iffy on something new or different , so it makes sense for them to show worry when financing new projects if they are uncertain on their return. Sometimes they're a hit, sometimes they're not and that's the truth of it. Obviously there isn't a one size fits all type scenario when it comes to game development, which makes them a gamble. This is just a product of the evolution of this process. Making a game today costs WAY MORE than what they did back then - a time in which making such risky gambles made sense fiscally. The market is so saturated that it's hard to create a breakthrough title, making it even more risky for companies to develop for.

I think the reason we feel burnt out with games sometimes is because we feel like we HAVE to finish a certain game, instead of playing what we want. A break is necessary, and for as much as I love RPG and these long games, theirs no time to play everything or just want to chill and play a sport game or fighting game.

I can relate to you Reggie. I started gaming when I was 10 years old, I am now in my 50's, so it's been a life long hobby. Lately for some reason I have been content with playing Far Cry 5, over and over; I have played newer games like the RE2 remake but I have been quick to go back to FC5. I am beating the game on legendary mode with little to no effort, not sure if that is a good thing or not. I think I am going through the burn out phase also. Thank for your videos Reggie, you are a very decent person and I appreciate you sharing your experiences with us.

I went through serious burnout about 2-3 months ago. I hadn’t played any games for about a month or so and that’s the first time it’s ever happened in my life. I had no interest in playing anything so I didn’t force myself to play. I found that my love for gaming came back one day so strongly that I just had to fire up the Yakuza series and I beat all of them and now I’m playing Tales of Arise. It’s okay to take a break from games cause I find a lot of people rush to finish as many games as possible when in reality, we need to just sit down and relax, take our time getting into the story/characters and enjoy the ride!

Ive had a passion for gaming since i was a kid. When i was 21 or 22 there was two years were i was more into the party scene. Been fully back into and more passionate about video games since 2009. Got back into retro video games that same year and havent looked back since. How i deal with gaming or video making burn out i take a break for however long it takes for me to destress and re think how to do what i love without burning out too quick. Sometimes i think to myself i have a huge back log of games and it can be overwhelming at times. Collecting is so much fun and its an experience that cant be replaced to me.

What I do is that I try not to load myself with too many games on the backlog and on my current list, currently I'm with GTA V and Shadow Of The Tomb Raider ans today finished Resident Evil Revelations. Also I just got a super cheap Saturn with a couple of arcade ports. I have a lot to keep myself busy for the next weeks until payday (have to pay a couple of stuff like my car insurance) and college will also keep me busy. I have enough games for now. Everything with measure is my advice for avoiding burnout. Also I like game genre and console rotation to keep things fresh.
Life has been hard for me lately so games have been a great distraction to the real world alongside my girlfriend and my RC drift car

I agree about the slow burn games.. or just call them slow games. Basically most JRPGs or classic RPGs are massive time sinks I no longer have time for. I used to absolutely LOVE these kind of games that took 100 hours to complete, and would explore every corner of the world, really immerse myself, get the ultimate weapons, fight all the alternative bosses and do all the side quests and so on. I'm not a kid with disposable time anymore. A high quality experience lasting 10-12 hours is perfectly long enough for me. If I know a game is going to be a lot of grinding, padded out with meaningless copy/pasted quests / checkmarks, I won't bother to play it.

A lot of these new games are just too darn long and end up feeling like a chore just to beat. When it comes to rpgs I like the older jrpgs that only take 30-40 hours to beat. Now a days people say that's way to short.

I agree that the jump between PS3 to PS4 was minimum, but apparently it's going to be more major this time. I think one of the biggest generational jumps was from PS1 to PS2 in terms of graphics quality. Games like Metal Gear Solid 3, FFX, and Resident Evil 4 still hold up today, especially when they are in higher res. Of course, going from 2D to 3D was monumental.

I used to devote myself to one game at a time hardcore but as I've gotten older I tend to bounce around with games when I'm bored. Eventually I'll find one that sticks and I get really into it. It's tough when there are decades of consoles and handhelds and PC games on top of all the endless modern AAA games and indie games. It's still fun, but it's def a different experience than when you're young and your parents get you maybe a few games a year or you're just renting them over the weekend and getting a few hours in.

There is more gaming out there then we have free time for.

Smartphone screens in our faces all day long. Social media notifications. Game recommendations on our phones and computers every time we log on. So much to distract us from what we have. It's easy to become overstimulated with all of that. I'm from the 5th generation of gaming. Back then in the late 90's games were the only screen time I had other than an hour of television with dinner. I try to stick with one game and make it the only screen time I have. I have a section with games and movies I haven’t seen or played. It’s about 30- 35 or so all together and I see it everyday under my tv. It’s just enough to be digestible and for me to just choose one or two depending on how much time I have. But don’t feel bad. Having A lot of anything actually does that to everyone. A single person can only take in so much visually at a time and when we have a huge collection it’s overwhelming looking at it or through it all. So... limit yourself a bit, put some aside and see if that helps.

Before I even watch this, but the title was great so comment 1st:
I had burnout for almost a decade. Was a PC gamer for whole life, couldn't find a game that intriged me for more than couple of hours - after that I played it becouse:
    a) "It will get good soon for sure.."
    b) "I paid 20$ for it, have to play it now or it was wasted money"
Couldn't find a decent game that was worth the money I paid, even from my fav genres like turn based games and JRPG. I was getting depresed about it (games were always my only hobby.. :( ) and then.. Fuck it, I need PS4. Bought it after 2 days without thinking much and oh boy it was a good decision. First, the way I play it, not sitting in front of a desk but on my couch with 55' TV. 2nd, I buy games now that I never would consider like platforming games, more action based (like YS 8 latly, I had so much fun with this, I always hated action based JRPGs, was crying FFVII Remake will be this kind of game..), some exlusives like Spiderman (was fun till like 60-70% of the game, then a bit boring and repetetive) or Horizon (still my best game on PS4).
And now to watch your video.. :)

I always try to convince PC only gamers that it's not about graphics, performance, etc. It's the way console gaming feeeels man. Yes you can hook up your PC to a TV but that's not enough to make it feel like a console to me.

I deal with it by changing the genres I play. For example, I started Xenoblade Chronicles X on the Wii U a couple of days ago, and I'm hooked. I had been playing a lot of Mario and DKC lately doing 100% playthroughs and got really bored. That's what works for me, though I don't really play a lot.

I think that's a good idea to get a _gaming chair_ set up in your room.
    Yea.
That's probably a very good idea to cleanup when you lose something and it was in that 1 room that was too messy for you to not notice.
I think it's crazy that the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube is considered _retro_ .
I remember when they came out and how amazing the graphics looked back then.
    6:09
You're thinking of the studio Visceral Games.
They were called EA Redwood Shores from 1998 ~ 2009; their last game under the old name being The Godfather II.
Dead Space was actually released as EA Redwood Shores.
From 2009 til 2015 they made games as Visceral Games.
    They made things like:
    - Dead Space: Extraction
    - Dante's Inferno
    - Dead Space 2
    - Dead Space 3
    - Battlefield 3: End Game
    - Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel
    - Battlefield Hardline
And then they were making "Project Ragtag" (the Star Wars game) that got canceled.
    Burnout is a big issue.
Sometimes we buy more than we have time to enjoy.
This is especially true as you get older.
I look forward to a new collection video.

I have the opposite problem. I want to play videogames so much but I barely have time. Since the end of November I haven't touched my pc or any of my consoles other than the switch where I've been playing pokemon shield for minutes at a time. Mostly because it's exam season. Come February I'll come back. I don't think I've ever got burnout mostly because life won't let me.

I think I've had burnout for a month now. Just not keen to play anything. Just feel overwhelmed. Even though I know I don't wanna give up. It's just this tired feeling against gaming. I think I've worked it out by playing a little bit here n there. I've got this big lot of games I haven't even played yet too.

I literally consciously quit Kingdom Hearts 3, just the dialog and story was driving me crazy (hated it). I decided to go to my backlog and i booted up Super Mario Galaxy through my WiiU. A 13 year old game that I’ve never beaten and I’ve nearly beaten it and I’m loving it. Truly wondering why i never played this years earlier.
I work a full time intensive job in a gas plant, and am married with all the responsibilities. When i get time to play, I’d rather not bother slogging through something t hat I’m really not liking.

I agree with you regarding the big box stuff. I love art books so I'll always try and pick up an edition that includes one but the last big box I got was Xenoblade 2 that was huge. But even that pales in size when it comes to the unnecessary size of the Fire Emblem Echos box I got sitting on my shelf... i had no idea it was that big when i ordered it, still not sure what I'm gonna do with it yet.

My backlog is too crazy anymore. Working 3rd shift doesnt help. I'm also just burnt out with the lack of creativity in the gaming industry anymore. All the games are too similar. Mostly open world for the sake of open world. The Indie scene is just pixel recreations of games we played as kids. If I hear "metroidvania" k instantly zone out.
I'm currently taking a break to kind of refresh, then I'll return to play a game I love even if I already beat it. I'm through with forcing myself to play some of the stuff I've picked up just because I feel I should. And I totally agree. A game has to hook me fast, if it doesn't i move on because time is precious. Ironically the last game i beat was death stranding haha

I tell people this all the time but sometimes games and enjoyment are all about timing. I can't tell you how many great games I started at wrong times and just thought I didn't like them when in fact, I just wasn't in the mood to play that particular style of game or that particular genre at that time.
If you are playing a game and feel like it's a game you should be liking and just aren't, the best thing to do is to set that game to the side and move onto something else. Never try to force yourself to play a game. That has never worked for me.
