However, my knowledge can be wrong since I haven't tested yet. Edit: Windows 11 require 312MB to just create RAM Disk (used to use the (part of) hard drive as temporary storage. However, just 512mb can run Windows 10 with start menu and taskbar works. 1GB is the minimum you could go for just simple tasks.

I hated how 98 wanted a reboot for everything, that was the thing that got me to upgrade to XP initially back in the day :) Sounds silly now, but when you had a CompaQ PC with 366mhz Celeron and 64 megs of ran with Quantum fireball HDD each reboot was a coffee brake :D
@@SKCro. Even if you "bypass" the limits, 1 GB of RAM won't be enough. Idk about Win itself but you won't be able to launch any app with that amount of RAM.
This is interesting also apparently the installer limits windows 11 currently not the OS so using shift+f11 and dism should work, hoping that mess is solved by release otherwise they'll be leaving it again to third-party users to plug the holes.
The question is, will windows 11 update and modify your boot files, leaving you no way to get back to windows 98? Windows 10 does that to linux pretty commonly.
Windows 10/11 only does that if you follow the Linux advice on how to use grub, if you use the Microsoft boot menu you never hit that problem, strangely using the Microsoft menu is supported by Microsoft & doesn't get stomped, plenty of tutorials how to do it if you google them. Just ignore the nay-sayers on the Linux forums. To answer your question, no the 98 entry won't get stomped on by updates either.

Holy shit the Lenovo G570! Damn, I had that computer from 2012-2019, my whole childhood basically. My whole life was on there, and everything just came rushing towards me when I saw that boot screen.
Windows XP, Vista and 7 has a classic theme which is look like Windows 95, 98 and ME. On Windows 8, classic theme was removed and Aero was replaced with Metro.
First try Windows 95 to 10, then 3.1, then 1.0/2.0. Make sure you have at least Pentium 4 or newer, 1GB or RAM or higher, and a 256GB storage or higher. (I guess?)

The win11 installer appears to have detected the 98 install and offered the ability to upgrade it! It even refers to it as "A supported version of windows". I wonder if that feature actually works, it's likely gone untested since the xp/vista/7 era.
This Upgrade Button does not function regardless of function. It has been in windows since vista but only worked on XP when running the vista installer on XP (or in the case of 7, vista) and was grayed out when in WinPE. However, Windows 8 got its shiny new installer when running from within an existing install, but the WinPE one was never changed (well beyond some colour and branding changes). This upgrade option remained and was quietly ungrayed out by microsoft adding to confusion.

One of my favorite little tricks with modern Windows bootloader is that you can go into "advanced startp options" and reboot into the older OS from there in order to avoid that second reboot :)
Or use EasyBCD which let's you use the non GUI bootloader automatically
