Great explanation. I only wish I had seen it before I changed out the clock spring. So after I changed the clock spring and found my horn still did not work, I found your video. 20 min of testing would have saved and 1 hr of work and a little cash. The horn relay was this issue. Swapped two relays to confirm. Thanks
Prior to any disassembly try turning the wheel full left or right and check the horn. If it works on the hard turn and not when centered it’s your clock spring.
Wow! That was easy... I checked the fuses inside of cab, but didn't have one for the horn. Looked it up on good old UA-cam, and you took me right to the second fuse box. Thank you my friend, best wishes Fidel. My Horn works now... 👍
Very informative video thanks for the thoroness. Got an idea from your video....crank the wheel all the way.push horn. Crank the wheel all the way in the other direction. Push horn. My horn works on one side. Doesnt work on the other side. Clock spring!!!
You ought to have far more subs than you do, you've got some great content. Looks like a little later on you had to replace the clockspring too. I'll be back...
Great helpful video. I put a new clock spool in and the airbag light is off. The 10A fuse is good. I'll check the horn relay tomorrow with my voltmeter while a friend is pushing the horn, following your video. The horn still doesn't work at this time. Is there a microswitch inside the airbag assembly that could have gone bad? I hit a deep hole up north and that's when it happened. I hope it's just the relay and not the whole air bag gone bad.
Thank you so much, these specific videos are so rare and even more rare when they're good! Having this exact issue and yup, clockspring, lucky i got a spare parts truck. now to watch your other video abd get it changed
Wow dude thanks. This helped me with my 2012 Tacoma and I'm a dumbass when it comes to being a mechanic. I actually learned a lot from this video on how to troubleshoot & diagnose things myself in the future. Sub'd
The green and red cable u where testing for ground, I'm getting power there and it didn't honk the horn. But the horns are honking when I hit panic on remote. I'll just change the clock spring
My results were the same as yours. Instead of buying a new clock spring. I wired in a aux horn button … driving a pin in where you did at 19:40. Just hot glued the pin, zip tied the wire… Put it all together and pushing on my steering blows the horn now…. I think that wire harness, turned so tight. Might pull wires out of the plug over time
@@GreggyGTV Green and white wire in the harness under the steering column.. he shows it in the video, access to that does not require removing the airbag, only the under plastic of the steering column, and area around key.. if i ever pull it apart again, ill respond on this
What would a melted ground on the horn cause? Mine was melted and I re taped it. It didn’t look like it effected the wire but maybe it ended up intact effecting it?
Following your troubleshooting steps I have verified my horn is functional by connecting direct to power and ground but jumping terminals 3&5 of the relay do not sound the horn. But the correct 1 & 3 terminals have power and the fuse is good. Could the ECU actually be affecting the horn if the relay terminal jumper test isn’t working??
The ECU does not control the horn at all. If you have power on 3 but jumping 3 and 5 does not sound the horn then you have a bad connection or broken wire from terminal 5 to the horn. Terminal 5 runs directly to the horn so if you put power to terminal 5 the horn should sound.
@@737mechanic Ahh okay that what I was thinking... break somewhere between horn and fuse/relay panel. Must be a crusty old wire break. I'll confirm with a continuity test and then get under that panel to run a new wire. Thank you so much!!
Nothing working on my steering wheel (( horn , the radio buttons, the cruise control, and the air bag light on )) so mostly the clock spring?? During the coronavirus i was hanging the face mask on the side of the steering wheel and someone borrowed my truck and the face mask got stuck in there and everything stopped working
I have a 2005 4Runner with you same interior I change the clock spring and still no horn and airbag light still on could it be the airbag itself? For both issues
No, the nither one would cause the other to not work. Sometimes there are different clock springs for the same vehicle depending on if you have cruise control and or steering wheel Rado controls so make sure the clock spring you have is the correct one.
@@codybrackett7173 If the relay clicks when you press the horn button then the clockspring is fine and the problem is downstream of the clocks print. You need to have someone scan the airbag for codes and see what it says.
Great video! Electronics are not my strong suit - I'm much better at turning wrenches. Question-- 1 and 3 on the relay have power and 2 also has power when I press the horn button, but I can't seem to jump the horns to work. To me, that seems like the relay is potentially still good, but I suppose I can swap out for another and remove all doubt. Where do I go from here? Seems like my issue is on the 5 pin side of the relay. The wires on the horns do seem to be plugged in, but I wouldn't expect them both to go out at the same time. Potentially a bad connector somewhere?
Jumper pins 3 and 5 together and see if the horns work. If they do not then jumper 12v to the horn connector itself and see if the horns work. It sounds like you have everything you need at the relay, the question now is are the horns bad or do you have a broken wire. As far as both horns going out at once. That probably wouldn't happen but one could have been out for a long time and you may have never noticed because the other one worked until it went out.
Well, after looking at the horn wires, for some reason I was expecting to see + and - wires going to each horn. There was something funny with the first connection and removing and reinserting the connector seems to have fixed the issue. The wires into the connector seem to be nice and tight. Maybe it just wasn't seated properly even though it felt snug. What a great exercise in troubleshooting and I'm glad it was something simple. Thanks again for the video! Now on to the next project before winter - new cv axles.
When I touch the negative that’s supposed to go on the horn to anywhere it goes off. but when I plug the horn ground into the airbag like how it’s intended to function it does nothing.
Why would the 10 amp fuse keep blowing? This occurs with the truck sitting off and not in use. I switch the fuse and the horn works. I'm not sure when it blows because everytime that I've noticed is after I've driven the truck, parked it, and returned later. Due to Covid, the truck was sitting unused for 3 days when this happens.
Are you saying it actually blows when it is sitting? There shouldn't be any way for it to blow unless the horn button is pressed. Either way what I would do is unplug the horn/horns behind the grill and see if it still blows if it doesn't then the horns are causing it.
