This maintenance chore was easy for a novice like me. Cleaning the air filter worked perfectly. After cleaning, the mower is running smoothly again.
Glad you and I agree on oiling a foam-type air filter. My knowledge of this comes from dirt-bikes I've owned and serviced, and know that the oil is what traps the finer dust particles, not the foam.
The owner's manual for my Toro with a Kohler 6.75 ft/lb torque rating does NOT even mention oil. It just says "clean every 25 hrs & replace every 100.
Lawn mower homies, the same oil that goes in your lawn mower goes on the filter.
Thank you to those who specified what type of oil to use!
Thank you indeed. My mower was hunting; used this technique to clean the filter & housing, re-oil and refit the filter and it is now running like a dream!
I thought something was wrong with the air filter when I saw oil on it, i washed it and dried it but did not re add oil!!! I will do that in the morning! THANKS ONCE AGAIN!!
This one goes out to Jay Taylor, 9 comments from the top. Thank you, Jay for providing the weight oil that has worked for you--for seven years! I appreciate your adding that information to Mark Bauer's nice explanation. I am prompted to ask why be a helpful hater when you can be a helpful hero with less effort? Mark obviously left out an important detail, a flaw you nicely rectified.
A gentle plea for civil discourse on the Internet,

Your comment is yrs old but I'm gonna take a chance you might see this. I can't find Jay's comment. Unless I'm overlooking it it has been deleted or something. Do you remember what weight oil he mentioned?
Use white spirit for filter cleaning and catch it in a reservoir. Then you can also use coffee filter to filter the white spirit and reuse it stored in a small container for next filter cleaning. Works very well
thorough, detailed, short and sweet, thanks for the help
For the people who need to buy oil, I recommend 10w30 SAE, which works beautifully.
You're welcome...
what oil do you use to oil the filter?
Brilliant, easy to follow . . .but could you tell me what oil to use?
Thank you for taking the time to make this video.
Claire Watson What engine does your mower have?
Good video! Dirt bike spray filter oil is awesome too.
What type of oil do I use after I clean the filter .... I didn't hear it mentioned
Good video on how to clean lawn mower air filter......BUT you missed telling us what type of oil to use!
SAE 30.
Or WD40 spray.
The same oil you use for the motor
Debbie Miller I was going to say the same thing.
Why do you need to oil it after washing it?
Very helpful, very clear, and looks so easy to do. Good vid.
Don't forget to check and clean the airbox too if required.
Thanks for teaching this!
Thank you, very helpful video... easy to follow instructions
Thanks good advice I will give this a try
Short and sweet; thanks.
thank u so much Mark and eHow =)
Can I use cooking oil or shredder oil?
Thx for the tips which oil did you use please..!!?
Regular motor oil. He said it in the video.
What if there is oil on the sponge? How do I get the oil off please?
Some of these comments are almost 10 years old. The commenter could have been super young then and is now on high school. Time, time.
The part I am missing here is what kind of oil to use. Any help would be appreciated.
SAE 30 or just WD40. Whatever is used for the mower engine itself would be fine.
@@ChrisStJohn8989 , Not at all. WD40 evaporates. Also it's not a lubricant, as some believe.
Chris St. It’s called Foam Filter oil. It’s made to be tacky to catch the dirts.
@@senatorjosephmccarthy2720 Hey there, i have a can of K%N oil spray in my garage, could i use that? i know its supposed to be premium stuff, guess if its good for a car would be good for a mower but i figured i would ask, thank you for your time.
Looks like a Tecumseh engine. I want a Tecumseh engine! Bring them back!
thanks this really helps
My mower stalled a few times then it worked thx
Thanks pal, saved me some hassle from the girlfriend today ;+}
Sweet. Thanks!
why add oil to the filter before you re install it what does it do Thanks Ian
He said in the video, it helps as a barrier for dirt.
The gloves are to protect yourself from the chemicals , not to keep your hands clean
Do you have to put oil in there
Worked.. Thanks
Thank you...
Thank you!
Thank you Sir !

ever find out what kind of oil?
Descender It irks me when people make videos like this and then don't answer people's questions. Anyway, what I've read to use is either lawn mower oil or regular automotive oil. I've used both. When I use automobile oil, I use 30 weight. Have used these oils for about seven years and my machine still works fine. Hope this helps.

What type of oil is what I wanna know
Can I use motor oil ?
Yes!
Any idea how to clean a filter that uses cardboard paper slits?
If only you name was Jack Bauer...you could totally make that intro epic.
What kind of oil?
Can a drenched with oil (and dirty)filter sponge cause a lawn mower not to start at all?mind you my lawn mower has also been stored in a storage shed which is gets a lot of moist weather particularly as we have had a lot of freezing cold weather.
Yup, think I’m having the same issue
What kind of oil
Thanks for the tip on using the baggy. Also I would like to know if the shroud on my 22 inch MTD push mower is necessary ? Mine is bent causing the blade to hit it.
11 years no answer
@@connormaguire94 13yrs no answer, you think he still has the mower?
very lightly oil the foam filters but not the paper ones.
And the ad is put on by youtube and you can skip it.
Foam filter oil its very sticky to catch and hold the dirt
Two questions, sir:
1. I was gifted a Toro mower with a 149cc OHV Kohler engine when a friend moved; it has one season on it. However, it does not seem that the governor is letting it rev to 3,600 RPM. It sounds more like 2,500 compared to my B&S-power mower. How can I adjust this?
2. According to the owners manual, gas is no good if it's over 30 days out of the pump, and 90 days if stabilizer has been added. Do you buy this if you use a well-sealed gas can?
would have been a nice tutorial if he didn't hide the oil label from us. Duh!! kinda of an important step in doing this.
What kind of oil??
SAE 30.
what is the point cleaning the oil out of the air filter just to put more oil on it? I think my lawn mower is smoking and leaking oil because there is too much oil in the air filter. I'm going to wash it with soap and water, rinse, let dry then install it without adding oil. Is this a bad idea?
thanks. I put about a tablespoon and a half of oil on the air filter and soaked it in. I didn't use a paper towel but I think I kept the oil to a minimum. Seems to be working fine now but I'm going to drain and change the oil because it hasn't been done for 3 years. Thanks for the tips.
air filters on this model Italian motor break down, excellent motor though.
I just put some gasoline in a small container and clean it in that then rinse it off and burn the rest of the gasoline. :-)
@joycemccloy its the same way you clean any carb
My lawn mower have don't a filter I didn't know I be used it
can a paper type lawnmower filter be cleaned?
No
You can blow the dirt out of a paper filter with an air compressor. If you don't have one, smack it on the ground to release the dirt. That worked for me. LOL Eventually, they will need to be replaced.
Any standard oil works folks, sae 30, 10w40 whatever. Just oil it for crying out loud.... LOL
what if i dont put oil on the air fillter?
It won't trap the dust without oil
otherwise it would travel right through the foam.... yeah... right....
Hacker, microscopic and almost, are stopped by the oil. Slightly bigger are stopped by the foam. Both cause wear and contaminate oil.
@xxxbmxerxxx1
Not all of us do. I've been doing lawnmower service for ten years and I have never worn a glove! I enjoy getting greasy :-)
what bout a paper filter
dry the sponge in the micro wave
that's one dirty filter. are you in a dust belt!
Then you put up a video.
buy a new filter, they are cheap
@xxxbmxerxxx1 hah
I'm supposed to watch a half minute commercial to view your 2 minute friggin' half assed instructions? Yea, right.
And yet you still took the time to say somethin.
@sor118 10w-40
why do amricans wear gloves
@Rick Hackler that comment was made 8 years ago. That person could have been 10 years old then and is now getting ready for college. Time is insane man.
