    Hi I'm Lee Labrada, your lean body coach and welcome to this weeks ask Lee.
    This week's Ask Lee question is from Mike Peter, of Atlanta Georgia. Mike writes:
    QUESTION: " Lee, Both my teenage son and daughter are getting into bodybuilding. What are the best and safest supplements for teens?"
    ANSWER: Well Mike, as a father of three boys, I have been through the teenage years, and recognize your concerns about choosing safe supplements for your teenagers as they start weight training.
    My advice is to keep it as natural as possible, because safety comes first. Unfortunately there are many supplements on the market which are shady at best. Stick with the tried and true supplements which include a high quality protein supplement and a multivitamin.
    And remember that no supplement is going to take the place of good nutrition. Make sure that your youngster is eating a well-balanced diet that includes plenty of protein from lean meats such as chicken, fish, and lean cuts of beef, and plenty of complex carbohydrates, including sweet potatoes, oatmeal, potatoes, and rice and bean for example. For more information on a well-balanced athlete's diet, be sure to see my nutrition videos on the Labrada UA-cam channel, and my articles on Labrada.com
    Once your youngster is eating a well-balanced diet, you can add a protein supplement taken in the form of a shake 1 to 2 times per day, along with a multivitamin taken with breakfast. We've had really good results with using Labrada's lean pro eight protein powder, as it contains high quality whey protein and has the earned the highest rating for its taste. If a teenager is going to use a protein supplement, it better taste good otherwise they're not going to use it.
    Two protein shakes per day can add up to 80 g of protein to the diet. Because most teenagers don't eat enough whole food proteins in their normal daily routine, the protein shakes can be very valuable for helping them to recover from weight training exercise, and providing plenty of building blocks for their young muscles. The multivitamin will give them nutritional insurance that they're getting the vitamins and minerals they need for growth.
    Finally, once your teenage athlete has been weight training and consistently consuming their protein shakes, you can add some creatine monohydrate to their daily diet, and this will assist with recovery and strength.
    Creatine is naturally produced in the body every day. A Creatine monohydrate supplement is safe as long as there are no pre-existing kidney problems, and the athlete stays well hydrated. It's important to drink lots of water when you are weight training anyway. Creatine has a history of being safe and effective, and I have given it to my own teenage boys since they were 15 years old. 2 to 3 g per day is plenty, taken with a meal.
    So there you have it a safe and effective supplementation program for teenagers. I hope that you found this video helpful
    For more training tips, visit our website Labrada.com and subscribe to our UA-cam channel.

    I'm 16 years old, weigh 162 and I'm tryna gain weight and muscle for football season. I go to the gym 5 times a week. Is creatine monohydrate safe and if so, how many grams a day.

    • @Labrada
      @Labrada  7 років тому

      Hey Jonathan, creatine monohydrate from Labrada Nutrition is safe to take when you're a teenager, however we would recommend that you first understanding your total calorie intake for the day, along with the amount of protein, carbs, and fats your eating roughly per day. Our whole food nutrition is the foundation for performance, if we do not have balanced nutrition plan no supplement will help you as much as it could with a balanced diet. Hope this helps explain things, at your age you would ideally be consuming roughly 20 calories per ideal body pound per day as a growing young man. Wish you all the best with your fitness goals.

    -whey protein
    -casein protein
    -bcaa
    -glutamine
    -l-carnatine
    -creatine monohydrate
    -pre-workout
    and the list would go on
    Thanks for the vid Lee!

      Guhan Seyon thank you for the kind comment. The Labrada Nutrition team and I realize that supplements are supplemental to a great whole food nutrition plan. Supplements work when used properly in conjunction with whole foods. Supplements where not designed to fill the gaps we are missing from whole foods, which we often try and do. Thank you again for the comment, all the best Guhan.

    • @Labrada
      @Labrada  8 років тому

      +jason virtuspro Thanks for the question, we don't feel it's necessary to stop any of those supplements. At the same time some forums and online resources will point out taking a break from Creatine Monohydrate every 8-12 weeks may ensure the body keeps producing it's own PCr levels. So that is the only caveat, taking a break from Creatine only may be beneficial every 8-12 weeks of supplementation. Hope this answers your question, all the best.

    I'm a 14 year old that works out quite a bit, now I'm a big boy though. I weigh in to about 350, don't be mistaken though I only have about 20% body fat. I'm about to enter highschool and I want to play varsity as a freshman which is a hard task so I'm trying to step up my lifting game to give me that extra edge what do I do? what all should I take?

    • @Labrada
      @Labrada  8 років тому

      +Dillon Carpenter At 14 and as big as you are, you don't need any supplements at this point, just good whole food nutrition. It sounds funny but your Mom was always right, make sure you are eating your veggies along with your protein and carbs because the veggies will help make sure your body utilize all the possible nutrients it can from your energy producing foods. To give yourself an edge, training is going to be the key, and at the Highschool level quickness is an asset. Try throwing in some HIIT training sessions along with your weight lifting to help with your reaction time and speed of recovery, hope this helps, all the best.

    • @Labrada

      Hey Buba, if you have had a chance to read other questions below you will
      find very similar questions already answered. That being said, at 14
      your focus should be on whole foods, if you already know how many grams
      of protein, carbs, and fats you are consuming per day, along with eating
      veggies at each and every meal, then yes looking into supplements like a
      whey protein can help with our overall muscular development. We do
      recommend that you start with whole food nutrition first, there's little
      benefit to adding in whey protein if we don't already know how many
      grams of protein we are consuming per day. Also we recommend that you try and aim for 18-20 calories per ideal body pound per day. If you want to weight 180 pounds that would be roughly 3,200 - 3,600 calories a day. Hope this helps, wish you all the best with your fitness goals.

    • @Labrada
      @Labrada  7 років тому

      Brady, thanks for the question, if you are not gaining any body mass
      with your current diet, you really need to increase the food until you
      do. Gaining about 1 lb a week is the most you will want to shoot for. Be
      sure to keep your meals balanced, and ideally having a fruit or veggie
      with every meal. Be sure to try and consume around 1 gram of protein and
      2 grams of complex carbs for every pound you want to weigh. Basically
      eating a whole potato size complex carb and an 8 oz extra lean piece of
      meat 4 times a day with veggies will go a long way. If you are still
      having trouble, throwing in 40 grams of whey protein could help for
      sure. Wish you all the best with your fitness goals.

    im 15 years old turning 16 in 2 months, my mom wants me to stop taking protien and creatine because she says im still a kid and she says that is not for anyone under 18, any help on hoe to convince. her and the doctor that its okay? cause i go to the doctor in 15 days and shes gunna tell the doctor that its bad for me, help?

    • @Labrada
      @Labrada  8 років тому

      +jklspicyweener We would allow your Mom to ask the Doctor. His opinion is very important. They key to growing is to consume around 1 gram of protein per body pound per day. So all you need to do is talk to your Mom about helping you make sure you are reaching your protein goals. For a if you weigh 150 pounds - 150 grams of protein a day will work great. A 8 oz chicken breast or turkey breast will have around 45-50 grams of protein as a simple reference. Hope this helps, your mom is only trying to do what is best for you.

    hey! im 16 years old and im doing regular fitness training but im under weight can i take mass gainer or protein supplements?

    • @Labrada
      @Labrada  7 років тому +4

      A mass gainer or protein powder could be beneficial. However everyone should start with whole food nutrition. We recommend anywhere from 3-5 meals a day coming from whole foods. With the goal of gaining body mass we suggest around 20 calories per ideal body pound per day. So if you do not know how many calories you eat in a day, we suggest starting there, once you have a rough idea on how much food you are eating you can then determine which protein powder will fit your needs best. First and foremost making sure you are consuming extra lean protein, complex carbs, veggies and fruits, along with healthy fats each meal should be your main goal starting out.

      Hey Eric, at 15 you do not need a single supplement. You just need to eat healthy food choices. Make sure every meal has a handful of dark colored veggies, and extra lean protein the size of your palm... Also try and stay away from all soda, and fried food. You will easily reach your goal if you can follow these few guidelines. Wish you all the best with your goals.

      At 17 consuming a weight gaining powder to help reach your calorie goals for the day can work well. Be sure to consume at least 2,000 calories from whole foods before adding in a weight gaining powder. • @Labrada
      @Labrada  8 років тому

      +maxpop39 creatine is a nutrient found naturally in your muscles, and by supplementing creatine, you will saturate your muscles with it. Because the aim is to saturate, the dose timing is fairly irrelevant, as long as your are consistent with it. We cannot comment on the safety or effectiveness of the product you purchased because we do not manufacture it, nor have we heard of it.

    • @Labrada
      @Labrada  8 років тому +1

      Hey B Jensen, we always like to start with whole food nutrition, so as long as you have your macro nutrient needs covered each and everyday, then adding in an amino supplement prior or post training can be very helpful with the bodies needs for a positive amino acid turn over rate. Meaning you will recover and fuel your muscles that much faster when training. Hope this helps, all the best.

    Hey Lee I need help. Football is coming to an end and I'm researching supplements to use. I'm nervous to use creatine because of people claiming it causes hair loss and is bad for you in the long run. I'm almost 16. Should I worried to take creatine?

    • @Labrada
      @Labrada  9 років тому

      +xCaspow Thanks for the question, I have never heard of creatine monohyrdate ever making anyone lose any hair. With that said, you are such a young a growing man, that we would recommend making sure you are consuming enough whole food calories each day before supplementation. So with that said, 20 calories per body pound per day should be your goal. With roughly 40% coming from protein, another 40% coming from carb, and 30% coming from fat.... Even though this is more difficult to figure out then taking a supplement these guidelines will help you far more then any supplement can at your age. With that said though, if you are able to make sure you are eating lots of extra lean protein, good carbs like potatoes and rice along with healthy fats, then adding in a supplement on top of all that can help for sure. Creatine can help as long as your nutrition is well rounded and executed almost everyday and is very safe to consume. Hope this helps, wish you all the best.

      @Labrada  8 років тому

      +Nick Frazer you will never "need" supplements as long as your whole food nutrition is on point. That being said, at your age, a whey supplement and glutamine supplement could definitely help you get in your required protein and aid with recovery!

    hi I'm 15 years I'm training for 2 years and I want to gain weights is mass gainer and creatine are safe for me

    • @Labrada
      @Labrada  8 років тому

      +Mazen Mostafa Thanks for the question. At the age of 15 all you need to gain size is a calorie surplus. You must eat more calories then you burn in a day. So, with that said we recommend trying to aim for 20 calories per ideal body pound per day. Now at 15 we don't expect you to know your macro nutrient break down. So adding in a weight gainer shake to your everyday meals is a good idea. If you do not gain any weight while consuming a weight gaining powder, this will mean you need to increase the size of your whole food meals until you start to see or feel a change in your physique. Hope this helps answer your question, all the best.

      +Veklorin Thanks for the question, research shows the continued consumption of 3-5 grams of creatine monohyrdrate each and every day proves the best results long term. Also having your creatine post workout with some form of carbohydrate is also a great way to ensure your body uses the supplement to the best of it's ability. @Labrada  8 років тому

      Hey Matt, thanks for the question, focusing on your whole foods first is really all you need at your age. Adding in Whey and creatine is a good choice. Here's what we recommend - 20 calories per ideal body pound per day. Of those calories we recommend a minimum of 1 gram of protein per ideal body pound, plus 2 grams of carbs per ideal body pound per day, the remaining calories can come from veggies and healthy fats. Wish you all the best with your fitness goals.

      +Gus Richards Hey Gus if you goal is to gain size, then we recommend you start with whole foods, when you can gain about 2 - 3lbs a month using whole foods, is a great time to implement supplements to really help make sure you optimize your lean muscle gains. A good solid protein powder should be the foundation of anyone's supplement program if the goal is to gain muscle. We recommend around 1 gram of protein per body pound per day. Pre-workouts are all very different, be careful when buying a pre-workout we advise using pre-workouts that a) tell you the amount of each ingredient - truth in labeling - and a product that you feel comfortable taking, you should know why each ingredient is in the pre-workout if you really want to know your stuff. Hope this helps, all the best.

      Hi Daniel, we can't speak to the ingredients in the protein powder because we don't know which one you purchased. However most supplement companies will never include ingredients that can hurt you. So as long as you purchased your protein powder from a reputable company you should not experience any negative affects. Hope this helps answer your question. Next time be sure to read all your supplement labels closely you should be able to say and know what each ingredient in the product is for. All the best!

    Hi, just a quick question is it safe for teens to take Beta Alanine and Citrulline Malate? If so how much should you consume?

    • @Labrada
      @Labrada  9 років тому

      +Andrew Clark Great question, science shows supplements are safe for any age. However here at Labrada we recommend teens wait till there at least 16 to 18 and have your parents consent to use products such as these. It's not due to health reasons, it's simply for the fact that a growing teenager has all the natural help they need for energy and growth. At this age a great whole food nutrition plan full of protein, healthy carbs and lots of veggies is ideal. For info on the proper amounts and what these supplements can do for you, please take a look at this article article all about pre-workout supplements written by Hunter (my son) - www.bodybuilding.com/fun/hunter-labradas-guide-pre-workout-nutrition-supplementation.html Hope this helps, all the best.

      Hi Gerson, thanks for your question, whey protein along with creatine does not cause colitis as far as we know. What we can say is that thousands and thousands of people consume whey protein and creatine on a regular basis with perfect health. Thus we feel it's more then safe to consume whey protein and creatine in the proper recommended amounts. Hope this helps answer your question, all the best.

    • @Labrada

      +Zain Ul Abedeen Thank you for contacting us here at Labrada, what you are asking for is an entire nutrition and workout program. For that we recommend heading over to bodybuilding.com where they have many great free online trainers you can follow. With that said you will want to make sure you are consuming around 20 calories per body pound, per day. For example if your ideal weight was 150 you would aim for 3000 calories a day. Along with a good macro nutrient split of possibly 40% Carb 30% Protein and 30% healthy fats. A weight gainer shake is very safe for anyone to use. The choice to use a weight gainer shake is up to you. We recommend finding out your total calories goals for the day, along with how many grams of protein, carbs, and fats you ideally want to consume and go from there. Whole foods must come first when trying to gain mass, a weight gainer shake is meant to help you reach your calorie surplus after you have already ate all your whole food meals for the day. Hope you find this helpful, all the best.

    hi sir labrada is a muscle mass gainer or full body mass gainer because my age is 21 and weight is 55 should I use labrada muscle mass gainer plz help me sir...

    • @Labrada
      @Labrada  7 років тому +1

      Syed, to gain muscle mass we recommend consuming around 20 calories per ideal body pound per day so if you want to be 200lbs that would be close to 4,000 calories a day, to maintain a body weight we recommend anywhere from 15-17 calories per ideal body pound per day. So either weight gainer will help you reach your goals, you must also take into account of much whole food you are consuming, so if you're only having 3 smaller meals a day the higher calorie weight gainer will be your best choice. Hope this helps, wish you all the best with your fitness and nutrition goals.

      @Labrada  7 років тому +2

      Josh if you have had a chance to read other questions below you will find very similar questions already answered. That being said, at 15 your focus should be on whole foods, if you already know how many grams of protein, carbs, and fats you are consuming per day, along with eating veggies at each and every meal, then yes looking into supplements like a whey protein can help with our overall muscular development. We do recommend that you start with whole food nutrition first, there's little benefit to adding in whey protein if we don't already know how many grams of protein we are consuming per day. Hope this helps, wish you all the best with your fitness goals.

      @Labrada  9 років тому

      +Ruan du toit At the age of 11, we would recommend sticking to whole food nutrition and perhaps adding in a protein powder to help you reach a goal of 1 to 1.5 grams of protein per body pound per day, along with at least 2 grams of carbs, and healthy fats, especially at such a young age with many years of potential growth. Here is a great protein powder that can help you reach your goals, we recommend no more then 2 scoops a day. www.labrada.com/store/leanprowhey.html This bag would last you roughly a 3 - 5 weeks depending on the amount of use and number of scoops you take a day. I'm 15, I play basketball a lot, I try to eat as much as I can, unfortunately school's food is kind of expensive and I don't really eat all the time, so when I save up enough money to buy A LOT of food, I buy 5 or 6 tortillas with beans and cheese, 4 or 5 flour cakes with ground meat and rice inside, and sauce with cheese on top, and maybe 1 or 2 bottles of natural lemonade, bottomline is i want to take protein supplements, my dad told me I could and that I should take half of what my mom takes (my mom usually takes two cups), and I wanted to know if it is safe enough for me to do it, but I am not sure if it's safe to take protein supplements even if you don't eat regularly. Also a classmate of mine told me I could die, which is kind of tricky.
    P.S. I eat at home but that is until I arrive and that is at 6:30 p.m because as soon as school is over I go to basketball practice, and the supplements we have are, Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey Protein and Creatine, and Universal Protein.

      @Labrada  9 років тому

      +jonh trollenzki Whey protein powder is the same as eating chicken, beef, fish, and every other source of good protein out there. There is NO health risks what so ever consuming whey protein powder. You can even take 2 scoops like you Mom does if you want... More often then not, a scoop is 20-25 grams of protein. For most men, 50 grams of protein at a time is perfect, you don't need anymore then 2 scoops at one time. So feel free to keep having 1 or 2 scoops of your whey protein. Hope this helps, all the best.

I would love if you can respond to my question. So in one month i will turn to 17 and i'm going to gym for almost 8 months and i would like to start using supplements. I want to increase my muscle mass and i was looking to take impact whey protein, maybe creatine and i don't know if BCAA are good to be taken at this age. What do you guys think? Thank you a lot and i hope all the best for your youtube channel and website.

    • @Labrada
      @Labrada  8 років тому +1

      Hey "HI MOM" first thing first will always been whole food nutrition, if you roughly know the amount of carbs proteins and fats you consume per day, then adding in supplements can assist with your fitness goals. A good whey protein post exercise is what we recommend, around 25-50 grams of protein per shake. In addition, we recommend you shoot for 1 gram of protein per ideal body pound, per day.... So if you want to be 190 lbs then we would like to see you consuming 190 grams of protein from extra lean proteins like chicken and turkey breast meats, along with 1 protein shake a day. Creatine and BCAA can be added in down the road, we recommend adding in 1 supplement at a time. Hope this helps answer your question, all the best.

    • @Labrada
      @Labrada  7 років тому

      Hey Sumit, soreness is a great indicator of how hard you are working, stretching before and after a workout is a great way to help with soreness, also stretching morning and night before bed. The more we can move the muscle (stretching) the more blood flow we bring to the damaged tissues (your muscles) and the faster they will recover. Also making sure you are consuming around 0.6-0.9 grams of protein per ideal body pound per day will also help with your recovery. Wish you all the best with your fitness goals.

    • @Labrada
      @Labrada  8 років тому

      +Justin Monday We are not sure what Beach Body Recovery is, so unfortunately we are going to have to say we don't know... At the age of 14 we don't feel many teenagers need supplements, we feel focusing more on whole foods like potatoes, rice, beans, along with veggies, and extra lean proteins will be your best bet. These are the building blocks teenagers need to grow. It's hard to gain weight as a teenager, you are growing at a rapid rate, so high amounts of healthy foods will be by far the best way to go. Hope this helps.

      Hey Gordon, thanks for the question. The great thing about supplements is the fact they are meant for everyone. Which supplements you choose to use greatly depends on your personal goals. With that said, a good whey protein powder (Such as Lean Pro 8) and a supplement such as ElastiJoint are two that anyone over 40 could benefit from. Here at Labrada we like to recommend around 1 gram of protein per body pound, per day, no matter your age. @Labrada  8 років тому

      +Vaibhav Gupta Thanks for the question, post workout we recommend a 2:1 carb to protein ration. Lets say 1 scoop of protein is 25 grams of protein, we would recommended roughly 50 grams of carbs from either a carb supplement such as Labrada's Power Carb, or a whole food carb such as instant oatmeal. If you are consuming a shake any other time during the day the carbs and protein needed would be determined by your needs for the entire day. Try sticking to a coffee or a pre-workout that has a maximum of 300 mg of caffeine per serving. Also important to note caffeine has a half life of 6 hours, so if you are taking pre-workout at 6 pm. You may find it difficult to fall asleep or get a restful night sleep, so be aware of what stimulants you are taking. Hope this helps answer the question.

      Hi Midhun, this is not Lee just an employee of Labrada. At 13 sticking to whole foods may be best. Whey protein is the primary protein powder in the world at the moment, so it will be hard to find a cheaper alternative to whey. Try your best to consume some protein at each meal. Portion size could be about the size of your palm at each meal for easy measuring. Wish you all the best with your fitness goals.
