This individual is correct that you CAN connect your smartphone or tablet to an older stereo system, but what he doesn't mention is that it's not the ideal setup for the best sound. Why? The Line-in on stereo systems is designed for a certain signal strength and impedance, which would be the Line-out from a device. The output on your smartphone or tablet is not a line-out; it's designed for headphones or earbuds. Will it work and maybe sound pretty decent? Sure. But it's not ideal. If trying to get the best sound out of this setup is not that big of a deal for you, then it will work. But if it does matter, since smartphones and tablets don't have a line-out, the best thing to do would be to get yourself a blue tooth device that has a line-out. The line-out gets connected to the line-in on your stereo system, and you connect your smartphone or tablet to the blue tooth device. You will get better sound this way than directly connecting your device to the stereo.
@@karlos543 Complete crap??? First of all, took you three years to reply to my comment. I had to go back and look to see what I had said. Like I said, we're talking about the output of a smartphone or tablet, which is not the greatest, so no matter what you connect to those devices other than earbuds or headphones, it's not a good impedance match. And if someone is getting audio out of a smartphone or tablet, which like I said is not exactly audiophile quality, why are you going to be wasting decent equipment to connect to them. Sorry, not all of us are audiophiles like you, apparently. And by the way, opening a comment replying to someone with 'complete crap' won't really endear you to a decent discussion with anyone.

My iphone SE 2 has a lightning connector, if I connect it to the lightning-to-jack cable, and connect that to the RCA-to-jack cable, and connect it tonthe amplifier it gives a lot of noise when I touch it and it disrupts the musicplayer of the iphone, the music plays back very fast forward or backwards.
Cable Jack to RCA doesn't work with most of smartphones, because of Low impedance in the source meeting high impedance on the destination reduces the frequency response, tailored in the phone for matched (or closed to matched) impedance. Additionally, compared to line out, headphone jack has it's own noise coming from the headphone amplifier chip and the volume control. Even worse, mobile phone provides very low Vpp (peak to peak voltage), making measuring the pressure a challenge to the amplifier. Depending on the quality of the amplifier, it's own noise might become audible, especially if the volume needs to be set high. In the end, there might be three different quality reductions, in the worst case resulting as low bass not audible and noise added from both the source and the amp.
