@bowslap I didn't mean Kerry when I made the statement about the trend continuing. I was referring to Dale continuing to be an absent father and husband to Kelly, Jr and their mom.
Happy Birthday Dale !! I noticed this car at Talladega in 1982 that was FLYING around the track during practice driving like it was for the win,his driving technique was on fire. Turned out it was Dale Earnhardt, been a fan ever since. Kerry, Dale Jr.& Kelly just learning more on about how determined Dale was to make it . Hearing what Dale had to do to make it explains why that car way back in 1982 was driving like that during practice. Awesome stories, sacrifices & success. Thank You
Gotta have nothing but respect for Jack Key. Raising a child who wasn't his blood. I'm raising a daughter who isn't my blood with my boys but I love her as my own. You look just like your dad Kerry.
Josh, been there myself and have to say, 'love is thicker than blood '. Thank you for doing the right thing in her life and not being one of those 'Dirt Bag' step-parents that do unthinkable things. Need to put them all in masonry block closets with a rebar door
It really is so many step dad's are underated. But I had a stepdad that was such a good man if you looked up the definition of a real man his picture will be rite there .sadly he's went to be with Jesus and I miss him but I no I'll see him again. Love you dad
@@aaronz9410 Well he should have seeing he let another man raise HIS child. I couldn't imagine being such a lowlife myself but hey he's a beloved race car driver huh..😒
I gained a whole new level of respect and appreciation for Kerry. His humility is unbelievable, and there is nothing in his life that he was embarrassed of or unwilling to share. He and his family should be proud of his success and accomplishments as a man. Thanks for bringing us along on the ride, it has been a fascinating story so far. BTY, I am watching this on April 29th, Dale Sr's birthday.😢
His mother died not quite 2 yrs ago he didn't go to hospital or hospice. Hell didn't show up at funeral for starters. BTW lived around the block from him his sister is my best friend and my uncle was Jack.
I have to commend you for being so professional and polite when Kerry and his aunts were talking. You just stayed quiet and let them talk without interrupting. A lot of 'professional' journalists could learn from you.
I agree 100%, @stapleton42 you caught gold filming that and not saying a word. They started having conversations like you were not there filming. How many people have been able to film the Earnhardt's sharing family stories like that.
The moment Kerry was standing in front of Dale's statue with his arms crossed and his legs and feet positioned in the same way damn near brought me to tears.. Kerry in my opinion is the embodiment of his father.. Both in looks and stature.. Thank you and Kerry for doing this interview and I'm waiting for part two to delve a little deeper into his career and life..
This family is as real as it gets. My father had 6 kids with 4 women. Learning and getting to know about my half brothers and sisters has been a journey. I totally relate.
As an adopted child myself, Kerry’s story is so powerful to me. Not knowing who or what could have been is a lot of weight to bare. A weight I carry every day.
Enjoyed this so much..always rooted for Kerry. In racing I don't think alot of folks understand just how hard racing and trying to make it big takes toll on the kids . Thank God he had great dad like mister key to have in his life. Always great he was able to finally connect with his dad Dale Sr. Kerry has made a great man . God bless him and his family.
You’re going places Mitchell. You’ve developed some really respectable connections to nascar and it’s a pleasure watching your channel grow. My boss sold and delivered Dale Sr a bulldozer back in the late 80’s and he said that Dale was an everyday person, that there was no famous/ego b.s. surrounding him. He gave him a tour of his property and even invited him into his home. My bosses son who is now 40 still has the toy race car hauler that Dale gave to him as a little boy when they delivered the dozer to him. Great content as always guys, keep up the good work!
This is one of my favorite stories in all of UA-cam the fact that dale respected his step dad to not interfere but also welcome him with open arms when he decided he wanted to meet him is amazing and I think shows a side of the intimidator and how nice he was off track
@@tuffguy428 why wouldn't he be serious? Dale knew he wasn't "father material" at the time. He knew that Kerry was well taken care of with his mom and Jack Key. I am sure Dale could have pushed the issue but didn't, allowed it to happen on its own time.
It's not ok to avoid your children just because you aren't ready to be a dad. You were man enough to have a child. Be a man and take care of it. He's a POS.
This was awesome! I worked at Dale Earnhardt Inc. For 4yrs. I started the month after Dale Sr passed. I worked in the Trophy Room and got to meet Kerry several times but I never knew any of this! I am so glad he shared this part of his life! It's awesome to finally put all the pieces together! Definitely do a video about his racing career. Sure would love to learn more about that too!❤
I may have met you. Went to a NAPA meeting at DEI in Jan. 2004 and we ate and had our meeting in there after we toured the facility. Awesome place and awesome experience. Got to see Jrs soon to be Daytona 500 winning car on the level plate being finished up.
Kerry was the service writer at Earnhardt Chevrolet in Newton, NC back in 1995, I was a customer, my wife and kids loved Kerry, hw always took time to pick with the kids, good guy, always thought he got a raw deal
Kerry is the man he is today because of Jack Key. Dale was there in his own way too. Everything happens for a reason. I ended up listening and watching to the whole video as I did my work. I'm so impressed with Kerry, his aunts and all those around him for that matter. My grandmother was a huge Nascar fan. I know she loved Dale Earnhardt and for some reason watching this story of hope, love and redemption also reminded me of my grandmother and it made me happy. What a great story and a wonderful family. You earned a new sub.
The Earnhardt family means a lot to us North Carolinians. I’m from Albemarle (40 mins east) and grew up in the 90s. My dad took us out to see the mill and the smokestacks before they demolished them. Only the Earnhardt’s can make a man drive almost an hour with his kids to see an abandoned building.
Ive been an Earnhardt family fan as soon as i realized what Nascar was...i too spent a part of my childhood in Kannapolis, lived on pleasant Ave. I was living there when Kennedy was assassinated....so being 67 ,that was a long time ago...this video is about the best one ive ever seen on the Earnhardts....i learned much more about them...May God bless Kerry and all the Earnhardt family...
I met Kerry probably 20 years ago, he was the nicest most genuine person I've ever met. The way he treated his fans was Richard petty level. Good driver, great person.
This is so, so awesome! We absolutely need a part 2! I love how Kerry had a whole planned route and story to tell, even if he forgot his notecards, haha. Thanks again for doing these, seriously, it's just so awesome to hear about and SEE all of this history, especially directly from the source. It fills the void in my heart that the old days of growing up watching racing left.
Bought my first dirt track car the day after Dale died. Hearing the sisters talk about how Dale's mom would talk with fans about Dale's impact made the feels come back to me how that effected my journey.
Always neat to see little Kannapolis getting showcased. My wife was from there and her grandmother lived right around the corner from the Earnhardt's so seeing all these places always takes me back.
The second part of this video where the three of them are just talking is pure magic and what is amazing is how they have known and been around each other for years but it was something like this that got them to share these stories.
My dad and I didn't have any relationship until I was in my early 20s. I knew who he was and only lived 2 blocks apart as a teenager. So thankful to have the relationship with him now. Thank you for this story.
Holy moly, a spitting image of Dale!! I can't imagine what it would've felt like to find out that your dad is that famous race car driver that you've seen on TV and heard his name many times over the radio.
I had an opinion of Kerry, this has totally changed it. What a fantastic guy and I feel so sorry for him and how he seemed to be the forgotten Earnhardt. Please do the story on his career, he certainly deserves to tell his side…
I really appreciate and relate to Jack Key! He knew Dale Earnhardt was a bad father and didn't want him to hurt or further disappoint Kerry. I hear Dale Jr talk about his Dad and it seems like the kids were not a priority for Dale. I think it is amazing that Jack sponsored Kerry and Dale Jr so they could race. Seems like a good hearted man!
Great point TN, I've have listened to every pod cast that JR ben on and your right SR just wasn't a good father for a wile it was only about racing, what's sad is he was being there for his kids towards the end,,
It’s not that he was a bad dad, he was a hard ass. He wasn’t that dad that would give you a medal if u did something little, you worked for it. I’m not saying Dale Sr was the greatest father in the world bc he wasn’t at all, but he was far from the worst. He was a hard ass and a stubborn dad but he treated his kids right. Kerry’s mother divorced Dale Sr and stoped visitations from him seeing Kerry.
@Ethan H he whent hunting, not spending time with his kids, whent fishing at his place in Florida not spending time with his kids, I could go on and on and on,,he sent his kids to boarding school, at that time not a good dad, he was although making it up at the end,, .I'm not saying this JR and his sister says this,, he wasn't a good father,,period
@@user-bl6ne3hc6n like I said Ik Sr wasn’t the greatest dad, he could have 100% did more with his kids, I agree with you on that. I’m just saying there are some dads out there that literally don’t do anything with their kids like I mean nothing. Sr spent time with Jr and Kerry on the race track. He spent time with his daughter Taylor on his farm and also along with Kelly. He was far from a perfect dad but he was not the worst
I’m 32 and grew up watching NASCAR throughout the 90s. Although I’m a Dale Sr. Fan, I appreciate the sport, drivers, and tracks from that era. Thank you guys for keeping that alive while continuing to entertain and educate fans. This is by far my favorite. Big thanks to Kerry! Would love to see another one and hear more of his stories!
Oh my God now I'm crying like a baby I've lived his life to a tee. Only mine minus the greatness attached to it. Again thank you Dale is still my hero and always will be
This video has so much cool Earnhardt family background stuff in it that no-one else has talked about before, totally worth watching every second of it!
Stumbled across this. Man this was an amazing video. Dale died on my 21st birthday never will forget that day. Thanks for this video. Once I started it I never put my phone down.
Just loved it 🥸 one theme that carries through the old nascar guys is the importance of FAMILY, something we can all learn from, even when things on the surface may not start out so "perfect". Really appreciate Kerry and his family sharing with us. And, the resemblance between Kerry and his Dad's statue is uncanny. Can't wait for Part 2 😎
I first met Kerry at his beer launch last year. Such a great down to earth person who could you could talk about anything with. As I said goodbye as I was leaving he said “See you buddy” and have me a grin that only an Earnhardt could have. Planning on seeing him again at the end of May at Old Armor again
At 1:00:42 when Kerry mentioned there are alot of us out there that didnt know our real dads. I can relate as I learned of being adopted at as a baby and grew up learning about my biological father at age 17. Its confusing at times and seems scary but its kinda cool at the same time but you always know your roots
@@Stapleton42 Even better. These kinds of biographical pieces are truly amazing to watch, they're almost like what I imagine uncut versions of those 30 For 30 shows are like.
"From the day he was born he was large and in charge" the Earnharts are a great family , Kerry is a very gracious man, I enjoy how he comes across gracious, hard working, grateful very proud of his hometown and family, Stapleton you have excelled, it must be a an honour to do such an interview with Kerry and his 2 fabulous Aunts who I could listen to all day amazing ladies. This has been a great video , thank you Kerry for sharing your past, here is to a happy healthy future #3 ❤
I don't know how to explain things really. But this is one of the best documentaries of the Earnhardt family and it's done with one camera. It's genuine it's real and very informative. The things your doing to preserve the history of Nascar is priceless. Love all these videos of days gone by.
Thank you so much , I’m 65 yr old , and grew up all NASCAR ,,, Was Totally 💯 fascinated , I laughed and cried … Man Kerry looks Just like his daddy ! Much respect!! ❤️
Thank you Mitchell & Logan for bringing out this terrific story, nothing graceful or of high standards but of clarity and honesty to Kerry and his story. We’ll ALWAYS have Dale in our hearts but now we have Kerry’s story. Thank you, again
Best video you've done to date, you let Kerry tell his whole story his way and you could tell the excitement and attention to detail he had. Great job!
My brother and his old Navy buddies bought a Chevy and went racing back in the 70's and raced against Dale Sr back before he was sponsored. They said he was the hardest working, toughest driver they ever raced against. I followed Dale's career and the boys right on thru to Dale Jr's retirement after his concussions. I would love to hear more about Kerry's racing experiences! He spun such a great story on this blog and I am sure he's got a trunk full more to tell.
Dale Earnhardt was larger than life no matter what people said. Been a Dale Earnhardt fan and a Dale Jr fan forever. Thank you for showing this. Very much appreciated
This episode was awesome. It's hard to describe in words the emotions that I experienced while watching this one. I had to watch it several times to be honest. Many times wiping tears hearing Kerry's story. I too was adopted at a young age, and while I have never tried to find my birth parents, I am now considering doing so. This was more than about racing, and I really enjoyed it. I hope you guys do more with Kerry and also share some of his past racing stories as well. As usual, keep up the great work. Above all, thank you. 🏎🏁👍
I can't thank you guys enough for the history you have dug up and documented. I now know so much more of the history of the Earnhardt's, Wallace's, Martin, Racing teams of the 80's and 90's with all the "Innovation". I swear you will end up on the download, Jr. has an affinity for Nascar history. I have loved the trips to Robert G's garage, especially after the Tony Jr, interview on the download, I could picture Robert on that back porch BBQing Steaks! You have brought the history of the stories actual substance by visiting the locations and reaching out to some of the greatest in history to walk you through those locations. Nascar and it's fans need to know how you guys are preserving these experiences with these great VLog's. No one is doing it like you are! We lived in Hendersonville, NC late 60's that's were my step dad was from & he learned how to drive fast hauling shine, this was before the Korean War.... Really enjoyed listening to Kerry tell his story... God Bless him! Thanks for sharing Mitchell, it was great.
Mitchell, I am rarely at a loss for words but I can't even begin to express how grateful I am to you and Logan (and of course Kerry and family) for this look at his life and the stories about growing up. The format of doing these kinds of videos is what I enjoy the most. Thank you for all the hard work you put in for our enjoyment. Be safe in your travels and always know when you are going out and working on the best years of racing with real heroes of the sport, there some of us older guys that really love the stories you share. Emotional, heartfelt and with a few tears of happiness THANK YOU!!!
So nice of Kerry to spend all of that time with and tell stories while showing you around. I love how he is involved with the community and the bonus footage with Kay and Kathy. Another video about his racing career and such would be great. Thank you.
I am proud to say I am a long-time friend of Kerry's and had the privilege of working with him at DEI and winning races with him. We had some great times racing and testing. His family is first-rate and salt of the earth . Miss seeing him! God's bless you and your family.
I without a doubt enjoyed this story of Kerry and his dad. To this day I often think about Dale Sr. when I occasionally watch a race. Man, I miss him. He was the best of the best. My family and I got to meet him one time up at Dover Downs. What a great man he was. He was so thankful for his fans. No one will ever replace him. Thank you for this interview with Kerry. One day I hope to get down to Kannapolis and see his statue.
Awesome video. I’m 45 and grew up a Dale Sr fan since the Wrangler days. I’ve always been amazed at how much Kerry looks like his dad - the part next to the statue really showed the resemblance. Keep up the good work!
Great video! Kerry so much resembles his Dad. Especially as he stood by statue with his arms crossed visiting with his Aunts. I kept looking at him and then at statue comparing his demeanor and side view, wow. Great day for everyone involved it looked like. 👍

I was fortunate enough to build Kerry’s cars at RCR. He drove some of our R&D stuff. Kerry of all the drivers I dealt with was the most humble and nicest guy I built cars for. We wrecked in the Winston open on Saturday night. Sunday morning I went in to get the car cut up to fix it. I got to the shop and Kerry was already there and had the nose cut off. I said “why are you here” (never did a driver come work in these days on his own stuff). He said I wrecked it I’ll help fix it. Every time he came in the shop he would come speak to me. Kerry is one of the best guys I’ve been around. Love to see him again. Super guy

Hearing what Dale had to do to make it explains why that car way back in 1982
was driving like that during practice.
Awesome stories, sacrifices & success. Thank You
lol
These people are the last of a generation that we may never see again, it's awesome to hear them talk, Kerry ,and his aunts.
Real deal southern bells showing proper southern hospitality. Don’t see that too much these days.
Yea, they're cool
U got that right....
Kerry is so chill, all the time. What a cool guy to interview, seems like you barely had to pry anything out of him.
I really didn’t have to do anything but hold the camera. He had already sorted out everything he wanted to say and do 😂
Gotta have nothing but respect for Jack Key.
Glad to hear Kerry talk about his step dad in such a positive way.
It really is so many step dad's are underated. But I had a stepdad that was such a good man if you looked up the definition of a real man his picture will be rite there .sadly he's went to be with Jesus and I miss him but I no I'll see him again. Love you dad
Watch his episode of the Dale Jr download. He talks a lot about Mr. Key and how awesome of a person he was on there.
Whether you like it or not -- that is Kerry's Dad. He adopted him -- he doesn't see him as a "step-father". It's okay that he has two Dad's.
@@leegoble5379 Even Dale Jr talks highly of him. Dale Sr himself had a lot of respect for Jack Key.
@@aaronz9410
Well he should have seeing he let another man raise HIS child. I couldn't imagine being such a lowlife myself but hey he's a beloved race car driver huh..😒
"Genetics are fascinating" Nailed it. After all these years, I can see and hear Dale in everything about Kerry.
Looks just like him.
You betcha
So happy he got to meet and talk to his dad before he passed and so happy he had a dad to help raise him . Both of them made him the man he is now .
Kerry's Grandmother was something special. She got in her head that all her grandchildren should be known and loved and pulled it off .
How sweet of Dale to send Kerry a present that first Christmas after they talked on the phone! So happy they finally found each other…
So nice to see Kerry this way,,he is the spitting image of his Dad in looks, speech pattern and voice...
Big time
I shed a tear, when the family posed in front of the statue. Kerry is a decent guy. Lets hear about his racing story.
Thanks Kurt we appreciate you
He is as real as they come
You don't know him humility is a joke
@@sammysdadmichael Enlighten me !
Thanks man. I agree. It’s my video but that doesn’t mean I have to dominate the conversation. Most people don’t understand that. That ruins the flow.
Thank you and Kerry for doing this interview and I'm waiting for part two to delve a little deeper into his career and life..
its awesome how much he looks like his dad. what a phenomenal video... always wanted more of Kerry's story.
Kerry looks like Dale Sr, and Dale Jr looks like Ralph. The one thing they all share (and I am similar in this manner too) is their crooked grin.
@@aaronz9410 are you an earnhardt? =o
Eie . !
This family is as real as it gets. My father had 6 kids with 4 women. Learning and getting to know about my half brothers and sisters has been a journey. I totally relate.
It is incredible how much Kerry and Dale Jr sound alike. There is zero doubt they are brothers. Thank you guys for these videos.
It's really seeing Kerry cross his arms just like Dale when he is standing next to the statue. Father like son.
As an adopted child myself, Kerry’s story is so powerful to me. Not knowing who or what could have been is a lot of weight to bare. A weight I carry every day.
This is one of the big reason Kerry wanted his story to be out there. Glad you found this video man
@@Stapleton42 me too. It’s very inspiring. Hopefully one day I won’t have to wonder.
Take all the dna company tests. You will find somebody.
Kerry knows who his savy came from
What you have been able to accomplish since moving to NC is nothing short of amazing. This is such an important channel in telling NASCAR history! 3
Thank you sir. I always wanted to do this stuff but never had the means to. Moved here as soon as we could afford it
Enjoyed this so much..always rooted for Kerry. In racing I don't think alot of folks understand just how hard racing and trying to make it big takes toll on the kids . Thank God he had great dad like mister key to have in his life. Always great he was able to finally connect with his dad Dale Sr. Kerry has made a great man . God bless him and his family.
I gotta add some appreciation for Kerry. It's evident that he put a lot of effort into this video also. If you read this, thanks.
Thanks man 💪🏻
This is one of my favorite stories in all of UA-cam the fact that dale respected his step dad to not interfere but also welcome him with open arms when he decided he wanted to meet him is amazing and I think shows a side of the intimidator and how nice he was off track
Are you serious?
Hearing Kerry share his stories. The time with his aunt's as well. Touches the heart.
Welcome to the channel 💪🏻
I could listen to Kerry tell stories all day. He seems so genuine and down to earth. Definitely want to hear his racing stories
Thanks man I feel the same way
Bought my first dirt track car the day after Dale died.
It's like talking with a childhood friend.I never knew Kerry until now. He's Definitely My Favorite Earnhardt.
I think I could sit and talk to Kerry for days on end ....so easy going and kind and genuine. Jack was obviously one good man.
Great point TN, I've have listened to every pod cast that JR ben on and your right SR just wasn't a good father for a wile it was only about racing, what's sad is he was being there for his kids towards the end,,
@123 well I think we know,, through his marriages,,
It’s not that he was a bad dad, he was a hard ass.
Man this video wins the Internet today. I love the raw nature of your content and this episode absolutely does not disappoint!!!!
Thank you Brandon!
Again thank you Dale is still my hero and always will be
The statue looks just like Kerry, EVERYTHING. Goosebumps!
Kerry and his family seem like such good people, and we are all thankful that you were able to get together with them to share this story.
Glad you found it man! You’d love our other videos too
Just loved it 🥸 one theme that carries through the old nascar guys is the importance of FAMILY, something we can all learn from, even when things on the surface may not start out so "perfect". Really appreciate Kerry and his family sharing with us. And, the resemblance between Kerry and his Dad's statue is uncanny. Can't wait for Part 2 😎
thank you uncle rob. good point
Thank you all for taking the time to tell this story. Glad you were raised by people who loved you.
I can't wait. One of my favorite episodes of the Download is the one with Kerry, and I can't wait to hear about how he started out.
This video is almost two hours and it only covers up to his racing career starting. Lots of new stories in this one

I don't know how to explain things really. But this is one of the best documentaries of the Earnhardt family and it's done with one camera. It's genuine it's real and very informative. The things your doing to preserve the history of Nascar is priceless. Love all these videos of days gone by.
Thanks Adam. Technically two for a couple shots but I rarely used the second camera
Thank you Tim. You are exactly the kind of person Kerry was hoping this story would reach. I am glad you found this video.
The more I watch this the more I see Dale Earnhardt in Kerry...the more I hear him. Oh what a Blessing this has been. Kerry you are his Legacy❤️🙏
I can't thank you guys enough for the history you have dug up and documented. Super guy
That’s awesome. Did you work with Joey Britt at RCR?
@@Stapleton42 Yes. him and I built the first COT for rcr in 05 or 06. He helped on special projects and did all our carbon fiber then. Super good guy.
