What she usually do is write the whole song and the melody and send it the Artist that she wanna work with. She let's them edit their part or whatever. This song is really beautiful. Hits differently if you have a personal experience.
    Edit:
So i just watched aaron desner's interview, the producer, and im 90% right. So what happen was Taylor already wrote the whole song and she knows that it's a duet but didn't know who to pick. So aaron suggested that Justin would be a good choice then she sent the voice memo to him and he added parts in the bridge.

Not all duets are created equal, and for folk and indie in particular, it can take months, even years, to build this kind of seamless harmony. That they did this separately, in lockdown, is astounding!

To be fair, the only reason I assumed it was Bon Iver is because of the style of songwriting (chord prog, melody...even the sound of the recording). I think Taylor is a great songwriter, especially after hearing this tune! :)

Hi! Like everyone said, she wrote the song, sent it to Aaron and asked if he thought Justin would sing the male part. He added the All This Time.
I think you would like Folklore, although I don’t know what music you usually listen to. If you want to understand why people like Taylor, it is not because of her mainstream hits. Those are probably her least popular songs that she chooses to release. She is a lyricist that is often overlooked with her big pop hits. You have to look deeper. I’ll suggest some of her stronger lyrical songs that you may like to listen to that will give you a sense of what Taylor’s songwriting and storytelling And performing is like.
    1. All Too Well (live from the Grammy’s is the historic version and the song to which all other Taylor songs are compared)
    2. Cornelia St and Death by a thousand Cuts (live from Paris)
    3. out of the Woods live from the Grammy Museum
    4. My Tears Ricochet
    5. The Archer (Live from BBC live lounge)
    6. The moment I knew
    7. Clean live from Reputation Tour

Coming here from the future to clarify that William Bowery is, indeed, Joe Alwyn, Taylor's life partner of 6 years. He actually came up with the chorus on the piano during quarantine. Taylor heard his deep voice from the other room, and suggested they keep working on it together. They are both Bon Iver fans and agreed that Justin's voice fit Joe's part perfectly and thus reached out to him. Justin then wrote part of the bridge. If you haven't already, I would highly recommend reacting to the Long Pond Sessions special on Disney +. It is Taylor, Aaron and Jack talking about how each song came together on Folklore, followed by an acoustic peformance of each. Breathtaking and enlightening.

This song is so reminiscient of her song The Last Time with Gary Lightbody from Snow Patrol. The opening kind of reminds me of it (though that could just be because I've already made the connection). It also begins with the featured artist singing the first verse and chorus and then after the second they have this rushed feeling overlap/ trade off of lines. My reaction to hearing this first was eh, the same I had listening to The Last Time but I think maybe this is my favourite song on the album. Though that's not fair cause I've listened to this song like 100 times and the others only, like, twice.

The musical arrangement sounds very like a Justin Vernon track, but the vocals are written by Taylor Swift for sure. As you know, his vocals are generally very abstract, but what could be more fitting than a break up song for him to hit the main stream. It is a beautiful song, with a fairly unique concept of hearing both sides. Taylor has such a beautiful voice, I admit to not knowing much of her music, but I guess part of the reason for this unlikely collaboration, is for people like you and I to have the opportunity to appreciate her. I am from the UK, where Bon Iver are virtually unknown, so there goes my "Hey, I have an amazing band you should listen to" line!

Hey! Thanks for your comment. I echo your sentiment...even here Bon Iver is coming up, but obviously nowhere near the level of Taylor as far as popularity goes. I think it's a win win, because like you said, it's a chance for people like us to appreciate Taylor, and for Justin Vernon and Bon Iver to break into the mainstream. Cheers, man!

William Bowery is the fictitious name for a songwriter in cognito. Aaron Dessner said it was not Joe Alwyn but someone else. He said he hasn’t had the opportunity to meet him yet. HS is a songwriter and is used to writing under a different name. I think he chose William Bowery this time.

This song was inspired by a vision Taylor had of an older man walking through the bluffs on land he doesn't own, wondering how things went so horribly wrong. I met Miss Swift in person in 2008, at a point in my life where matters had taken a turn for the worst, and told her she'd one day be spoken of in the same breath as the Beatles, my childhood musical idols. Since 2008 my life has completely fallen apart and Exile fits my current situation perfectly.

I’m obsessed with this song! It’s so hauntingly beautiful! Can you react to “epiphany” off of folklore? Doesn’t seem like it’s everyone’s favorite so far but to me it’s about doctors and nurses in COVID 19 dreaming about finding a cure and wishing they could save their patients

Not sure if I'll have time to, but it's more likely I'll have time to at least react to one. If I do, it'll be "epiphany" You've intrigued me to check that one out. Don't worry, I don't like all of the Beatles' songs, or all of Aerosmith's songs, Bob Dylan, etc. Taylor has had 188 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, including 9 number ones and 40 top tens, and she is tied for the most Grammy Album of the Year wins. So which song exactly didn't you like? I have a feeling you're not aware of her oeuvre. If you're into music, you should probably educate yourself on her more. Young, pretty women can be musical geniuses too. If she looked like Bruce Springsteen and sang about women, more guys would pay attention to her songwriting.
As others have said, Taylor and her boyfriend Joe Alwyn (under the name William Bowery) wrote this song together during the pandemic and brought it to be produced by Aaron Dessner. He had the idea to have Justin do the man's part, and Justin got a songwriting credit.
