Behringer SL 75C - Detailed Review for Dialogue

- The Behringer SL 75C is budget friendly dynamic microphone. While the SL 75C is promoted as an instrument microphone, many content creators are looking for a good microphone for recording when background room noise is less than perfect. Is Behringer's SL 75C dynamic microphone a good choice for dialogue.
In this video I unbox and complete a detailed review of the Behringer SL 75C. I review the build quality, performance for spoken word, and compare the SL 75C to other dynamic and condenser microphones. I also review the difference a small amount of EQ can make for spoken word with Behringer's economical SL 75C.
Many like to compare the SL 75C to the Shure SM57, but only the SM57 sounds like an SM57. In my review for dialogue, I allow the SL 75C to stand on its own for dialogue recording and will help you decide whether Behringer has produced a capable dynamic microphone for dialogue with the SL 75C.

Do This First:
To get the most out of your recording or streaming space, I recommend sound treatment including acoustic absorption panels. This is the single biggest way to improve your audio before investing in other gear. You can make your own, or I highly recommend GIK Acoustics as they manufacture some of the best quality panels available at an excellent value.

I'm thinking the Behringer mic probably sounds most similar to other Behringer dynamic mics. It would make sense that there is a Behringer capsule design, much like how you have the same or similar capsule in the Shure SM58, SM78 and SM7B.
In my opinion, this probably is a good quality mic, and may even be better than a Shure in some applications. The SL75C sounds a little brigher than the Shure SM57 to my ears.
The SL75C has a brighter tone vs the SM57 to my ears as well. The SL75C gets significant criticism for looking like but not sounding like the SM57, but on sound alone the SL75C is suitable for many applications and the build quality is very good imo. I do find the XM8500 to be warmer vs the SL75C and I am going to get more Behringer dynamic mics in for review. It will be interesting to hear how much of a “family sound” they have. Thanks for sharing your take on these mics.
I'm noticing this on many of your videos, when sound fades and goes up itself, like after very slow compressor [ 3:45 ]. This is definitely made with processing, no matter hardware or software
Thanks for the comment. I don't apply compressors or other effects during recording but I do normalize the final video with Izotope RX 9 (8 in the case of this video) before uploading to UA-cam as if I don't, UA-cam will. I try to record with the average as close to -16dB as possible to minimize the effect of normalization which can sound like very slow compression/expansion, but it isn't perfect. I'm thinking about uploading raw samples with links to try to get around this.
When you say 4:00 you mean close to the top, right? I have a Focusrite 2i2 3rd gen, and I made a test today, and got surprised because I need tu up barely close to the top de input volume
Yes, maximum gain would be about 5:00 on the Scarlett. Dynamic mics generally require a lot of gain and I find settings on the Scarlett interfaces are generally between 3 and 4:30.
Great
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Sir , is this mic need 48v
Thanks for the question. The SL75C is a dynamic microphone and does not require 48v phantom power.
I’ve seen people trash this mic because it looks like a 57. Other then looks, it’s not really comparable.
Agreed - I think there is so much "it sounds like the SM...or it sounds like the RE..." that the actual tone of many mics goes unnoticed. I always say, if you want the character of a specific mic, save the $$$ on mics that are similar (or look similar) and wait to pick up the one you actually want. If you like the tone of the SL75C, get the SL75C, not because it looks like an SM57. Thanks for the comment and for watching!
