The pain never eases - was working in HK 97 & 98 at Sha Tin this day and backed 4 winners out of eight, Derby shown live as last race and lumped my spuds on Silver Patriarch - ouch. Side note Entrepreneur was 4/1 on HKJC tote odds
Brilliant Benny the dip. Just about got the trip. The bunch behind could not live with an electric turn of foot 4 furlongs from home. The best horse won, and that's all that matters.
right before the line Silver Patriarch is in front and just after it but not crucially right on the line it is still the most sickening way to lose , the old bob of the head trick
@@stevereynolds8596 he was in front right before the line check it in slow mo by stopping it rapidly he was DEFINITELY 110% in front right before the finishing line
@@WESSERPARAQUAT What I can tell you is I had £50 on Benny the dip and damn near shit my pants at the end. S P was the better horse but needed further and the race was run with his finishing speed taken into account. All the same I don't think B T D had the energy left to rally and the camera angles have you fooled. What a horse though and he fully deserved the St Ledger.
@@stevereynolds8596 yea, i had alot on him in the Ledger he was a good tough battler a high class plodder is what i'd call him and angle or not he was definitely in front right before the line but not on it , the bob of the head
Silver Patriarch was not the best horse. If it had been over further, then yes, but Benny the dip was faster and had a better turn of foot. Silver Patriarch could not compete, so the best horse won.😊
@@Alp560 I've just rewatched the 1996 Derby and Dushyantor isn't travelling at all and did well to finish second. I assume you meant Dushyantor as it's rather difficult to blame Eddery for Shantou as that horse was ridden by Dettori.
@@Alp560 Silver Patriarch needed further and the race was run at top speed to counter his finishing. Neither horse nor jockey can be blamed for the astounding 2nd place. The St Ledger was always his.
I had £50 on Benny the dip and damn near shit myself the last few yards. Everyone knew about Silver Patriarch's finishing speed and the race was run accordingly. I agree S P was the better horse but I still chose right, mainly because of the distance. S P went on to win the St Ledger that year.
@@stevereynolds8596 any other course and Silver Patriarch would have hacked up. He was like bambi on ice all through the race. Great tactical performance on Benny the Dip, who railed like a greyhound and got first run. Well done on your bet.
The best don't always won, but I'm not sure this applies here. Silver Patriarch was so far behind because he had no tactical speed and was too slow to lay up with the pace.
@@simonhindley65 I did mention that the reason I opposed S P and backed B t D was the distance. The St Ledger is a quarter mile further and he was never gonna lose that.
Outrageous price the fav
yes I remember at the time thinking that the favourite odds were totally unwarranted

Shame silver patriarch didn't run better early in the race.... Fantastic horse
Pat Eddery threw away two Derbys... Shantou and Silver Patriarch..🙈🙈🙈🙆♂️
Don't forget el gran señor as well threw that away
